Yamaha developed the YHT-740 A/V Home Theater package to turn your home into a theater. In addition to enhancing the sound of a video source, like your TV, DVD, or VCR, the YHT-740 also superbly reproduces audio sources, such as a CD player or a cassette deck.User opinions

Close... But not quite Perfect
Pros: Excellent Speaker Quality, Feature Rich Receiver, 6.1 Capabilities, Multiple Surround Sound decoders
Cons: Difficult to set-up interface.
Audio Quality: While some insane audiophiles would tell you this system lacks in audio quality, I'm here to tell you other wise. Every system regardless of the price or technology is going to have it's flaws, the secret is simply setting the system to your own specifications. Through the adjustment of the built in menus and through the purchase of a seperate equalizer, any audio purest will tell you this system is top notch. The most common misconception is that it's the receivers or speakers fault that a system is garbling audio, adding unnecessary noise. The truth of the matter is that it's all in your settings people. Bottom line here.. the sound is phenomenal.
Physical Set-Up: Set up of the unit was as painless as can be expected with technology of this caliber. The process can be time consuming, but I found it easier then setting up a wireless network at home.
Receiver: Overall a very appealing design and interface for both purests and casual users. The orange display is easy to read in all lighting conditions, and doesn't distract from the picture on the television as do many blue hue models. The receiver is rich with just about every decdable audio format you could ask for, and the included extra settings are nice as well.
Audio Settings Set-Up: This category is the low point for the system as a whole unfortunatly. Menus can be confusing, and can take a lot of getting used to. There not impossible to use, but there not as intuitive as they should have been.
DVD Player: The dvd player sports the 5 disk progressive scan changer that thankfully plays every format I've thus far attempted to play on it. (Cd, DVD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-rw, DVD+rw) It's an excellent unit, however does suffer from some minor problems... 1, to support the tray the unit is very big, height and width wise are acceptable, but the depth of the unit is sstaggering and could pose problems for others. Also, there is no simple disk exchange feature which allows for dvd swapping on the fly. Finally, if you plan on using the dvd player to play audio cd's, there tends to be some down time between songs, and disks which can lead to annoyance.
Speakers: Excellent sound quality, excellent design, and all around solid quality.
Remotes: 2 remotes are included, however using the receiver remote for both units is the only way to go.

Never will buy Yahama HTIB again ..
Pros: Subwoofer good, receiver powerful and has features.
Cons: This is the third Yahama Home Theater In A Box (HTIB) system I have had since June of 2001. The only reason why is the returns I had to make at Best Buy. Each time, the DVD player has failed and I have had to replace the entire system because each model

Best HTIB set-up for the money
Pros: I've had this set for nearly 9 months and this was a great investment! Picked it up on sale for $595, this set is on sale frequently at Best Buy. Display on receiver is easy to read and comprehensive. DVD has an on-screen set-up so it's easy to use. Sou
Cons: Very large components. Expect to lose an end table or buy a new entertainment center.

Two Yahama Systems - Two Replacements
Pros: I have purchased two Yahama, top of the line, home theater in a box systems in two years. Good initial sound and features
Cons: Both systems had to be returned due to DVD failures on both. And since these are boxed systems, the entire system has to be replaced, which is a total pain in the butt! I purchased the 4 year svc plan from Best Buy which covered me, but I have replaced
