Several years ago, the author of a book about an illustration app--not CorelDraw--created his book's graphics with CorelDraw. Why such blasphemy? Primarily because the application he was writing about was harder to use and had fewer features. To this day, we agree: CorelDraw is an easy-to-master, exceptionally powerful program with a luxuriant toolset and a lucid interface. Version 11.0 adds several new illustration tools and better import/export filters. Although CorelDraw won't set any speed records when handling complex files, its many outstanding features make it the best illustration app in its class.

Smooth-as-butter interface
CorelDraw's completely configurable interface helps solidify its supremacy over the competition. The program makes it easy to create your own toolbars, menus, and macros as you work, then save that customized work space for specific tasks. For example, if you build lots of flowcharts, you can design an interface that puts all the most important flowchart tools right at your fingertips.

We also love CorelDraw's cross-platform support and vast range of import/export filters. The filters let you port files to and from other design programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Visio. To wit, when we exported a multilayer CorelDraw file to a Photoshop file, the layer arrangement remained intact. And since CorelDraw 11.0 is optimized for Windows XP and carbonized for Apple OS X, the program can take advantage of pertinent operating system features, such as XP themes and security settings.

A new bag of tricks
Graphics pros get some good news, too: CorelDraw 11.0 finally supports symbols, so you can save artwork (a symbol) to a central library, then drag and drop it into any document as many times as you want. In the past, if you wanted to reuse objects such as arrows or call-out boxes, you had to save each image to a new file, then copy and paste this file into your illustration--a time- and resource-consuming process. Symbols are faster, easier, and don't significantly bloat file size.

Version 11.0 also introduces a few new tools, including pressure-sensitive smudge and roughen brushes that respectively blur and texturize object outlines. These brushes, unfortunately, aren't as responsive as similar tools in Adobe Illustrator, but we give a big thumbs-up to a major enhancement that lets you convert paragraph text to curves, then apply artistic effects, such as drop shadows, without losing paragraph formatting.

Fortunately, even with all these fancy new features, CorelDraw remains easy to use for novices and pros alike, thanks to its self-explanatory tools and intuitive, customizable interface. Anyone who can print a Word doc can figure out CorelDraw in an hour or two. However, we recommend this program primarily for midrange and professional designers.

Bad scripts
Our biggest gripe with CorelDraw? Its appalling Visual Basic scripting (macro) program. Traditionally, macro recorders let you automate a process (say, batch-converting files) by remembering each keystroke, mouse click, and cursor movement you make. Thereafter, you can re-create the process with only a few commands. In our tests, most of the processes we tried to record didn't register with CorelDraw.

Another flaw: the program we tested ran rather slowly on our 1.2GHZ Windows XP Pro system with 512MB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. Let's hope Corel releases a fix soon.

Good as the gold code
As for Corel's tech support, it's the same-old same-old: acceptable but nothing fancy. CorelDraw's free phone support (via toll line, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday) lasts 30 days, after which you'll need to sign up for a fee-based plan. Fortunately, Corel's online FAQs and knowledge base are extensive, and in our tests, the e-mail support desk returned answers within 24 hours.

CorelDraw remains one of the best illustration bargains around, especially considering the apps it often ships with: the excellent Corel PhotoPaint image editor and the RAVE Web graphics program. Look for our review of the whole suite soon. This app's sluggish performance disappoints, so you might want to wait for a performance update before you buy it. Nevertheless, CorelDraw still wins our vote for the best illustration tool we've seen.

Better than an Etch-a-sketch

Pros: Cheap Software

Cons: You don't get what you pay for.

Review: This is just a horrible, terrible program - typesetting is rudimentary at best, the control palettes eat up a ton of screen space, and images are embedded within the files for all eternity - preventing you from backtracking to the originals, and bloating the final file. The only reason to consider it really good is if your previous graphic design program was an etch-a-sketch.

11 is really bad news

Pros: CorelDraw has grown as an intelligent design tool, and now finally version 11 converts text boxes to curves painlessly. That's the only important reason I upgraded to 11.

Cons: Has lots of flaws. It doesn't work well with my wacom tablet, it crashes, it scrambles exported GIF images when publishing to WEB, it is VERY slow and unresponsive when compared with 10. Corel made a bad turn with 11, and I'm afraid that's very bad news f

Vraiment Puissant !!!

Pros:

Cons:

Simply The Best!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Easy to use and master. Tried vitually every graphics program in the market and still come back to Corel. Yes, it sometimes is a wee bit slow. But you gain so much more by having all the functions right there. Get the graphics suite. It comes with all the bells and whistles.

Forget the little revisions - Save yourself the headache and stick with 10

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am probably the last remaining die hard Corel user on earth. ;-P But seriously, I've sworn by DRAW since version 3 (ah the good old days when programmin MEANT something...). Version 5/6 saw signficant improvements, but shaky stability. Version 8 is in my mind the best there is (to this day, Corel Scan is better than any other scanning utility I've seen), but unfortunately doesn't offer the new stuff that's hip nowadays. Version 9 made up for that, but chopped out a bunch of really nice things in the process. Version 10 is the one I use now, and after trying v. 11, I am certainly in no hurry to upgrade. The main reason I purchased 10 was for RAVE (Corel's version of Flash). Version 1 was pathetic, but showed amazing potential and was very stable (Keep in mind that DRAW 10 was released after the CEO got canned, and some really good changes were taking place, including Corel's determination to get back to basics - solid, beautiful software. They did that with 10). In version 11, once again, RAVE was what I had my eye on, but there was also some nice web features in Photo-Paint, as well as DRAW. The install is OK, but not as customizable as all previous versions. DRAW is pretty nice, but problems are clear with Photo Paint. The magnetic mask is seriously busted, and the VB Scripting they used to replace CorelScript (why they use M$ in place of what they know works is beyond me) is beyond repair. The kicker is RAVE, which is seriously improved, BUT is so glitchy that it simply cannot be used. I have extensively looked into the problems with it, and there are actually entire newsgroups dedicated to all the flaws with RAVE. It really chokes me up to say this, but until Corel gets their act together and goes back to the quality seen in version 8, I refuse to purchase another version of Corel DRAW Graphics Suite.

Corel v11 rocks And kicks photoshop 7 out of the ring

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I tryed both photoshop v7 and corel 11 tryouts and i been useing corel since v3 and i must say with everyone saying you should get photoshop i stayed with corelDraw and found that it just gets better and better plus who wants to use a program that you have to go out and buy all kinds of upgrades to get it to have all that corel already has i say buy it and have fun creating what you want without wondering if you need to go get another program to draw with and edit photos or export to PDF,Flash or get a effect you want

Better than Photoshop?!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don't think so...I realize that Corel Draw and Photshop are also used for different things, but there is no way it is more powerful or better than Photoshop in nearly any way. Photoshop is not that hard to learn either, and is far more useful to learn it. Sorry, Corel is just not a substitute, just a lesser alternative.

Waity for the Service Pack before buying

Pros:

Cons:

Review: 11 is as unstable as 10 was before service packs 1 and 2 came along. Great creative tool, but without stability you can´t let your imagination go wild with it.

User Rating: 8/10

A product for light graphics

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was somewhat disappointed of the lack of speed in the latest version. Illustrator 10 is more cabable in handling very complex works (say over 40000 objects). Futher, the speed of the trial version (11) is a fraction of CorelDraw 9s in several operations.

It's been the best since version 8

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Corel has been the best since version 8 came out. Version 7 had some "real" problems, but version 8 rocked. We weren't too impressed with version 9, however, when version 10 came out we again saluted the leaders in inovative graphic design. Corel 11 promises improvements on version 10, some of which will take the old user like me more time to get used to than the newbie. After only a few days of working with Corel 11, I can say that they've made another great product for the designer. Whatever your skill, or profession, CorelDraw is a tool well worth having.

It does everthing in fewer steps than Adobe Illustrator!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use a lot of brands of graphics software, but unlike most graphic designers, Corel remains my main staple. With Adobe Illustrator, I get frustrated at how often I have to switch tools, or switch between keyboard and mouse. With CorelDRAW, I can do most things in just a few clicks, and all the tools and effects I need are easy to access. It's a very intuitive piece of software. My one complaint--the "memory leak" issue never seems to get solved, version after version.

Draw rocks Illustrator's World

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I own a graphics company and we have both PC's and Mac's and all Adobe programs and all Corel programs. Our graphics guys have grown up on Adobe, so I buy them whatever they want, however I point out all the things they struggle with in Adobe and how effortless they are to do in Corel. Recently a customer brought in an .eps file that the graphics guys couldn't open in Illustrator and were turning the guy away. I asked to see the disk, put it in a WinXP machine with Draw11, bingo! Node editing in Illustrator is the equivalent of Corel version5. Illustrator's palette based "dumb" interface also clutters 1/3 to 1/4th your screen while Draw's smart interface changes to what you're working with. Illustrator is also very limited in large scale printouts. I think the limit is 10feet. Anything beyond that you have to 1/4scale draw it and print at 400% ... goofy. Just get Draw11 design it in half the time and design it real scale.

Absolutely excellent!! Best drawing app out there!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a professional graphics artist and I have been using CorelDraw since version 3...it has proved to always beat it's competition hands down!! It always had WAY more features than the competition too....features which were later copied by the competition (take the "envelope" effect for example, which has been in CorelDraw for as long as I can remember but was only introduced in Illustrator a couple of years ago!!!.) Having worked in a design agency for a few good years (I am now at a newspaper) we had almost every graphics app out there so we could deal with whatever was thrown at us....I am proud to say that every time we had to create an illustration that was very complex, CorelDraw was the only app that could easily create what we had in mind....thus I rarely used Freehand or Ilustrator because they could not give me the "true creative freedom" that CorelDraw could. The CorelDraw 11 graphics suite continues to maintain it's high standard of excellence!! I recommend this highly to all mid to professional graphics people out there:))

Very usable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have had versions 4,7 & 8 now 11. haven't used it to much yet but like the interface and features so far.

I LIKE IT

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Few crashes but not as bad as 10. Squizz, terazzo, julia missing in PhotoPaint. Overall fast & fun

User Rating: 9/10

Far improved over previous versions

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Stability is dramatically improved, functionality hasn't been dramatically improved, but the stability more than makes up for it.

Draw 11 is a 10!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: CorelDRAW is simply the best illustration and layout package out there. I've got them all and Draw offers all the features I need without having to buy add-on packages. As a professional designer I can get the job done and make changes quickly to turn jobs around much faster than with any other app out there.

User Rating: 1/10

beats adobe at any price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: my old photoshop teacher told me once . . "yes, corel is better but the schools had started out mac based so everyone learned photoshop". well, out with the old school. not sure why they say corel is slower in the cnet review - that's one of the things i prefer, is that not only is the workflow faster in corel's product(s), they don't get hung up as much during re-gen times. maybe someone else would like to comment on this. with all the bonus features in the corel box, i.e. font mgr, bar code creator, clip art in a spiral-bound manual, 5 cCDs!!!. it's worth it to have even if you have never tried it. the learning curve is fast. think of it as adobe, only more intuitive and fun to work with with at least all the same features you're used to using and more. definitely more of a value. the printing engine interface is way better than adobe's too. it's like the difference between a compnay who is hungry and going the extra mile vs. one who has gotten fat and lazy while people automatically buy upgrades, no matter what and for whatever reason. i was sent a photoshop file that someone made in photoshop 7 that would not open in photoshop 6 but opened in corel photo-paint! (presumeably because of what adobe did with their file compatibility, of which i hear was designed to make adobe customers locked into other expensive adobe products. hey not to knock adobe, but these are opinions that you can find from other online reviews.

so easy to use.. then why is it NOT #1?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Perhaps it's the long history of Corel BLOAT ware.. perhaps it's the tendacy of Corel suites to install thousands and thousands of files.. perhaps it's the product's unwillingness to cleanly uninstall.. perhaps it's PHOTOpaint's lack of full support for the photoshop plugin api.. perhaps it's the interface clutter.. it seems this review has been less than objective. Are you sure Corel didn't finance it's publication? whoa.. lackluster review for all the "new" features. hmmmmm... now let's hear a fair, realistic comparison of Corel's product with those of Adobe and Macromedia. New bells and whistes.. you want them? go to a thrift store and buy a bag for a buck or two. want utility, and stability? use Adobe software.

User Rating: 10/10

Extremely Powerful

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Over those 15 years of innovation, Coreldraw still the best over it?s competitors.

User Rating: 10/10

The best for Both Mac and PC

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used 11 on both a PC and a Mac (which I've also got Photoshop, Illustsrator and Freehand), and Corel is BY FAR the easiest to use and fastest to complete a job. If people would give this program a try, they would be blown away (even die-hard Adobe users would have to admit this is the one to beat).

User Rating: 10/10

Competition can't do drop shadows

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The drop shadow feature alone blows the competition away! I don't have to go to Photoshop to creat and manipulate diffused drop shadows. Corel's superior in almost all aspects of goodies. For those Corelphiles being persecuted by service bureaus (and misunderstood colleagues) submit your artworks in PDF format exclusively. On the downside, Corel must improve RAVE (heavy files)and Photopaint (matte option) just a wee bit.

User Rating: 10/10

This is absolutely the best

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the best coral draw version ever. I have used 9, 10 and now i bought 11. It's extremely eas to use yet has excellent features.

User Rating: 1/10

The best Draw ever

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Is is faster as the version 10. Not easy to find any bug. Interesting new features but no overkill. Bad: They removed most of the nice addons from former version like Squizz, Corel Texture...

User Rating: 10/10

Très bon logiciel professionnel!

Pros:

Cons:

User Rating: 9/10

CorelDRAW 11 ROCKS!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Some of the most cumbersome (and most often used) features are now streamlined, making both the learning and production curve on this product significantly lower than in version 10. Other features that users love, like Power Clip and Mesh Warp have been enhanced with additional features that allow one an amazing level of creativity for any project.
