You just gotta love software that plays David to Adobe Photoshop's Goliath, and Jasc Software's Paint Shop Pro does just that. In fact, for about $500 less, you get a program that's almost as good as Photoshop. For example, Paint Shop Pro's vector drawing tools are so tightly integrated into the program--making them much easier to learn and use--that they beat Photoshop's hands down. This program is feature-packed and robust enough for professional-caliber image editing yet easy enough for artists of all skill levels.

This program is feature-packed and robust enough for professional-caliber image editing yet easy enough for artists of all skill levels.

Automatic Picture Repair
Image editing is a formidable challenge for most amateur designers, primarily because you need to learn tons of tools and processes to use image-editing software. Fortunately, Paint Shop Pro holds your hand most of the way. Although it doesn't come with wizards, Paint Shop's help is beautifully organized and teaches you the ropes without much jargon. Besides, Paint Shop's interface is so straightforward, you probably won't need help with most common tasks. Version 7.0 has even added menu commands that automatically remove red-eye and fix blemishes caused by dust and scratches. (For an image-editing tutorial, read "Perfect Pictures in a Flash.")

Two-in-One Graphics Package
And if you need more advanced tools, Paint Shop Pro has them, too. It supports both bitmap (raster) images and vector objects--the best of the illustration and photo-editing worlds. Many image editors now include vector tools, which create objects with crisp edges (such as text outlines). But unlike the rest of the packages, Paint Shop Pro integrates its vector tools seamlessly and elegantly so that it's easy to switch back and forth between vector and bitmap tools.

Effortless Effects
Paint Shop Pro's new Effects preview browser makes it easy to add special effects to your images, too. Fiddle with Paint Shop's 80 or so filters, such as Spiky Halo or Buttonize, to look at the effects without making a commitment. And Paint Shop ships with almost every imaginable color-correction tool, including a sophisticated channel mixer, which enhances the red, green, or blue channels in an image by adding percentages of the other two channels.

Limited Web Graphics
To help Web artists create animated GIFs, Paint Shop Pro includes Animation Shop 3.0, a midrange Web graphics creator. Paint Shop Pro itself, however, supports a variety of tools that optimize compressed graphics files for the Web, including JPEG, GIF, and PNG. And, of course, Paint Shop includes all the buzzword Web features, including slicing (cutting an image into easily transmittable pieces), rollovers, and image maps. Unfortunately, these features are hard to locate. You have to use the File/Export Image Mapper or Image Slicer to get to these functions, and the rollover function is buried inside the Image Mapper dialog box.

Printing Problems
Alas, Paint Shop Pro fails in one critical area: print proofing. It doesn't include a standard CMYK preview. And although representatives from Jasc assured us that they exist, we were unable to find any way to use standardized integrated color management (ICM) profiles. These files, which ship with most input and output devices, help maintain consistent color among devices--for example, the scanner, monitor, and printer--and are crucial for professional print output. Without these profiles, you'll have to resort to trial and error to assure uniform colors from one device to another. One further complaint: Paint Shop Pro still isn't available for Mac. Since many graphics professionals use Macs, this is a major drawback.

The ICM glitch aside, however, Paint Shop Pro is a good choice for both novice and intermediate image editors. Graphics professionals will probably want to stick with Photoshop, but for pros on a budget who need a fast, friendly, powerful image editor, Paint Shop Pro is the way to go.

Quickly explore special effects and image adjustment filters inside the Effects Browser.

Excellent image editor and graphic design tool

Pros: Lots of effects, tools easy to learn, comes with animation program, picture tubes, web optimization

Cons: No built-in way to convert .mov files into animations, not Mac compatible

Review: I prefer this program over Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop has some cool effects that this program doesn't have, but Paint Shop Pro 7 has its own fair share of effects. I found this program a lot more logical and easy to learn without a manual than Photoshop. I only use Photoshop for the effects because I don't know and can't figure out how to use most of the features. Paint Shop Pro is very easy to figure out on your own, though, after you do a little experimenting. Paint Shop Pro comes with picture tubes, which are like little pictures that you can paint all over your work. They include butterflies, bugs, leaves, etc. There are also tons of brushes you can download off of the internet to paint different textures and designs into your work. If you're preparing images for the web, this program also has an image slicer, image optimizer, image mapper, and other tools to help you out. If you want to make animations for the web, Paint Shop Pro comes with Animation Shop and the ability to transfer images back and forth between programs. If you're editing family photos, PSP comes with a set of tools that include, red-eye reduction, contrast and saturation enhancement, JPEG artifact removal, and others. There are also lots more advanced features involving color and different things. I've had this program for several years and I still haven't learned it all, but I keep discovering new cool things all the time. I highly recommend this program. The only problems I have with it are that it isn't compatible with Macs and you can't convert .mov files from a digital camera into animated gifs with it.

Avoid trial version!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Note that 30-day trial version is a waste of HD space...you can't print or save anything. Worse is that when you uninstall it acts like an angry child and renames all your graphics files (Corel, etc) to PSP.Image and you can't open them again! Who knows what else lurks in the heart of this software?

Terrific product -- can't wait for PSP 8

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use Paint Shop Pro 7 in a professional image processing/web publishing environment, and its ease of use is unbelievable. With no real prior experience with image editing tools, I picked up PSP quickly and am now producing great results. Te new release, PSP 8, adds Python scripting along with a bunch of new features that I can't wait to get my hands on. For the record, this in NOT a "planted" endorsement ... I'm just someone who loves this product!

Overloads computer

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The darned thing will not open unless you reboot your computer. Kills the resources available and I had, repeat, had plenty until trying to run PSP 7.0. Just uninstalled the thing after it refused to load at all.

Customer Service does not care

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I beta tested this software and since you register yourself as a beta tester you get an e-mail offering you to get PaintShop Pro 7 for discount by certain date. With that in mind, they also offered the upgrade 8.0 free as long as you purchased 7.0 by certain date. I just got an e-mail from JASC telling me even though I purchased 7.0 2 weeks ago, I have to shell out another $50.00 because of the offer I got as a beta tester. The software is good but Customer Services does not care...all they want is your money. I expressed my opinion and asked if they reconsidered or I would return it. All they responded was an RMA number and address to return it. That was all. Pathetic if you ask me.

A good deal

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Having used both PSP and Photoshop, I have to say that PSP produces graphics that are just as good, (and occasionally better) looking than Photoshop. And god knows you can't beat the price. Not terribly intuitive (but neither is Photoshop) so I advise getting a book or outside manual to help with the fine points of the software (the manuals that come with the software don't shed too much light on the subject, although they get you started.) Had no trouble loading onto WinXP, and had one little preset shape glitch, but was solved by a two second visit to Jasc's website for troubleshooting. I strongly recommend this for someone that wants a paint program without spending a fortune.

Great product, well worth cost!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's great to use a product that lives up to and surpasses expectations! Incredibly effective red eye removal features work especially well, even for pet photos. Nice tutorials make it all clear.

good price for a near perfect program

Pros:

Cons:

Review: im not a power user, but even i can make things look good with psp7. great price as well. the built in filters make tweaking pictures easy and fun. the interface could use some work, and its not the eaisest program to use past just drawing, resizing, and applying filters, but still my graphics program of choice. highly recommended.

great software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm new to digital photography and graphics and after using several LE versions of other brands of software I purchased PSP v.7 several months ago and found that it is and excellent program for amatuers with all the automatic editing features and allows you to learn the more advanced features with a little patience and persistance. I haven't mastered it yet, but I will. Great and fun software to learn.

I bet Jerry has Microsoft XP !!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Everyone who has XP knows XP will not let hardly ANY apps run, except for XP office. XP has either not let my favorite programs load, or lets a program load then trys to take over many features. It took me several days to install Irfan View and everytime I use it I get an XP pop-up telling me to use MS Photo Editor. The freeware Irfan View is much better then most graphic viewers out there. Please don't let Jerry scare you, if you are not running XP, Paint Shop Pro is a good program, read the instalation info and follow them. No Worries

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Thank you all for your feed back, it helped me to decide on this software. i'm new with this software (1week) and have a lot to learn, but so far i love it. and have no problems. i used the disc down loaded approx. 3 mins. in my dell pent. 4. my camera is olympus c-4040, and it's a great combo. Again thank you all.

Ease-to-use GUI, support, and stability are all huge deficiencies!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I use this to draw skyscraper diagrams for www.skyscraperpage.com; there's a lot of neat features but it takes a while to get used to the interface and to get used to the feel of the program. It hasn't crashed on me yet, but it has caused some minor problems with other programs (it changed my language from English to German). Still, it's OK for what you get.

Very easy, except for installation

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Jasc Paint Shop Pro is intuitive and simple to get the hang of for beginners, and the intruction manual is written in plain language to help guide users' growth. My favorite feature is the JPEG compression facility, which seems marginally better than ULead and Adobe. The real-time compression data is not unusual, but the file sizes seem a tad smaller and the image quality can hold its own against the bigger programs. The only gripe I have is with installation, but the source of the problem is not the full version of the software--it's the trial version! I used the trial version for thirty days then bought a CD. The CD will NOT overwrite the trial version, so I uninstalled the trial version. Unfortunately, the UnInstall app didn't uninstall EVERYTHING--it left several dozen registry entries, which only a fool would try to take out manually. I emailed Jasc, and they gave me a patch which fixed my registry, allowed me to install the full version, and now all is fine. Though it turned out well in the end, I hope they spend a bit of time working on a better product for the next version release--this sort of thing will turn off many prospective buyers. 8 out of 10 is my rating--the 2 points off for installation problems.

Paint Shop Pro is the way to go.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don't know what I'd do without Paint Shop Pro. This product delivers nearly all the features of pricy Photoshop, at under a hundred dollars. The vector tools are *outstanding,* and the raster tools are just as good. Jasc Software has made many improvements to the product since Paint Shop Pro 5 (including better fill effects, better picture tubes, and better shapes), and I heartily give it my full recommendation.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Paint Shop Pro is "awesome" the only thing that is negative, is the name...sound like a simple beginners paint program to those who don't know about it.

Wins over photoshop 7

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have both photoshop 7 and paint shop pro 7 and even with all those features that adobe delivers i still stand by good ol' PSP7. The interface is simple and easy and the whole thing runs very fast. Don't overpay 400 bucks to place a rollover on your webpage!

Pretty Good Program...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had this program for 7 months now, and i still love using it. i've created banners, web images, logos, etc, etc with it and i have had no problems with the output. the program is also very stable (however i run a 1Ghz PC) and have had no problems whatsoever with system crashing. one of the greatest positives of this program is its ease of use. i have both photoshop 6.0 and psp 7.0 anniversary edition and i gotta say PSP 7.0 is so much easier to use. i spent about a few hours just messing around with the program until i started figuring things out myself such as creating new styles (which are really cool) and being able to clone images onto others. photoshop was quite difficult that i had to get a hardcore manual to learn it. the bad thing is this program doesn't have the number of features photoshop has. it depends on the user if you wish to do a lot with your stuff or not. another thing is that there are not a lot of 3rd party filters for this program. the only ones i know of are alien skin, virtual painter, and flaming pear. photoshop has a plethora of filters dedicated to it, with about more than a third of them being really good. all in all, this is the best economic value for someone who is either a novice or even an expert at image editing...

User Rating: 2/10

Incredibly slow

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program seems incredibly slow for no reason. Both Photoshop and Illustrator do standard object handling ten times faster than this. You will be extremely frustrated with this program. I must say, I have only worked with the vector part, so I don't know how the raster part works. But if you want to work with vector graphics, stay far away from this product!

User Rating: 10/10

Better than Photoshop

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Everbody tends to think of Adobe's Photoshop as the ultimate image editing software, and for many years this was true. However, after comparing Photoshop 7 to Paint Shop Pro 7, I have to recommend Jasc's brilliant alternative over the industry standard for several reasons. First of all, the price is right. There is no reason why anyone should pay what Adobe charges for Photoshop, it's not worth that much. For 500 dollars less you can learn to create professional graphics quickly and easily with Paint Shop Pro. Paint Shop is easier on the computer (bargain system owners take note) and is compatible with infinitely more file types. Also, the vector graphics of Paint Shop make Adobe's software look bad. Albiet, there is not as much support for true color print processes (CMYK) as in Photoshop, however this one weakness is minor for most users, and does not justify a 500 dollar increase in proce for a program that is harder to learn and requires expensive pluggins to create even simple effects. Adobe, watch out, you should be taking lessons from Jasc on efficiency and value.

Best Value Period

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used Paint Shop Pro since its modest beginings as shareware. This is the easiest to use and powerful package for the dollar on the market. It will do everything anyone needs and more -- I especailly love the browse and batch conversion capabilities. If you do web graphics this is bottom-line a must. It reads about every file format on the planet and will allow you to convert with ease. It doesn't get any better than this!

User Rating: 9/10

Impressive Upgrade

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm a former Photoshop/Corel PhotoPaint person, but I felt like I was banging my head up against the wall when it came to vectoring and text editing in Photoshop, and masking in PhotoPaint. Jasc is hitting on all cylinders as it delivers powerful simplicity in the new 7.0 version and I may not go back to Adobe and Corel... unless they catch up to what Jasc is doing with graphics.

User Rating: 8/10

Beats Photoshop in ease-of-use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used PSP since v3, and it's gotten better with every release. It wasn't a real match for Photoshop until v5 or so, but now it compares nicely - there isn't a whole lot you can do in Photoshop you can't do in PSP for several hundreds less and in less time. PSP has never caused system stability issues - I have upgraded it, uninstalled it, installed from the CD, patched the install, etc. and never had a problem. Unless you're a professional artist, designer, or photographer, do yourself a favor and buy Paint Shop Pro instead. You might compare positive vs. negative feed back percentages for the two products, too. I think it speaks well of PSP.

User Rating: 9/10

Easy to use, easy to learn, easy as Paint Shop Pro

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I baught this a few months ago. It is absolutely the best web graphics software anywhere on this planet. Jasc has done a good job on putting all the features of PhotoShop into one easier to use computer program.

Who need Photoshop?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been using Paint Shop Pro since version 3 or so. It's a wonderful program. Jasc really listens to customer feedback and the result is a better version each time. I have used Adobe Photoshop at home and at work and I truly believe that Paint Shop Pro is much easier to use. For about $100, Paint Shop Pro 7 is the best image editing program for the price.

Amazingly low price for such a powerful tool

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used PSP since around version 4. The first thing that struck me was its ease of use and intuitive interface - from a trial version and with no manual I was quickly able to achieve what I wanted to achieve. I also had a look at a trial version of Photoshop, also with no manual, and I couldn't say that I had the same experience at all, the interface was not so much of a problem but, I found it far from intuitive. Version 7 is even better than ever and there are plenty of tutorials around to help you quickly realise what a powerful graphics tool PSP is. I would suggest to anyone considering buying Photoshop to look at PSP first. They may find that PSP does what they want to do, and for a lot less money. I seriously cannot think of anything I would criticise PSP for. Of course, Photoshop is a more powerful package but, with its price tag I couldn't justify spending that kind of money.

The Best Image Editor! And easy on your wallet

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had this program for about a month and I am already designing graphics for professional companies. It is much easier and cheaper than Photoshop. I have used both porgrams and I think that PSP is better. It's cheaper and easier to use so why would you not want to save $500 for almost the same thing.

Great program for beginners

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First purchased PSP a couple of years ago & loved the ease of use over Photoshop & the bargain price (about $500 less). Great program to start with for beginning graphics. Of course it can't take the place of PSD, but it can certainly get the job done. I now use both programs simultaneously & am very pleased. For those who find it difficult, as with any program, there are a tremendous amount of tutorials on the net to help learn the program.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Im a programer who is always looking for a a good image editor to make logos with for my software. This software is worth more than $99. Too bad they let it go so cheap they could of easily pulled $300 out of my pocket for this one. Thanks for the amazing software.

User Rating: 7/10

Cheap Photoshop with many features, but flawed interface.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Software is where I wonder the most about truely getting what I pay for. This is exemplified by Photoshop vs. Paintshop. Paintshop is about a sixth the price of Photoshop and, yet, offers a very similar feature set. Nonetheless, it is far from being photoshop's equal in a number of ways: 1. Performance: generally speaking, PaintShop tends to be a good deal slower in previewing modifications. This is only somewhat compensated for by Photoshop's very slow performance in making actual changes once approved by the user. 2. Quality of results: I have observed that some of Paintshop Pro's tools don't work as well their Photoshop counterparts- most notably, repeated application of transform tools resulted in significant degeneration of image quality where the same activities using photoshop cause almost none. I attribute this to paintshop using one algorithm for generating previews and final results whereas photoshop seems to use two whenever it can- a fast one for previews, then a good (but rather slow one) to do the actual final modification. 3. Tools Interface- The interface has significant shortcomings in the execution of sliders and other coarse-adjustment inputs. Also, useful information one sees included in Photoshop is not provided- E.G.- histogram information integrated within the Levels adjustment dialog. 4. Image Interface- Both Paintshop and Photoshop have significant user interface shortcomings when sellecting portions of images, however, whereas Photoshop's shortcomings is a design decision due to trading one form of flexibility (direct resizing of selection regions) for another (ability to select irregular areas), the PaintShop Pro user interface also misbehaves in ways that demonstrate a relatively low level of software refinement- for example, where rectangular selection regions will have stubs of selected or unselected pixels projecting out from or into the selected region. Also, having come from photoshop, I found Paintshop Pro's handling of layers and alpha channels disappointing. Conclusions: Paintshop pro is a good package for consumers who want advanced image manipulation capabilities and who are willing to sweat a litte for them from time to time. However, the additional money spent on Photoshop would soon be recouped by professionals or, even, by serious hobbyists. PaintShop pro is in an uncomfortable position of being not as good as the big boys like Photoshop, but not as friendly as the lesser "Click-and-solve" packages like Photoshop Elements. However, it might be a fine choice for someone who wants to move from the relatively simple and highly automated products sold to consumers up to a much more flexible- if flawed- package that offers excellent bang for the buck in terms of raw capability.

Transition from Photoshop was a snap

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been a Photoshop user since v3.0. I decided to give paintshop pro 6.0 a try and haven't looked back. If you have any experience with Photoshop, Paintshop will be a snap! In this case less is more! I LOVE it!

Great Editor

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just reading some of the ridicules reviews given by some people. Reminds me of camera reviews I've read where people complain of cheap, faulty cameras that broke after they dropped them. PSP Locks up your hard drive? How absurd, the moon must be green cheese in your world, at least for the last 15 years of your computing experience. Can't find Color correction features? click the menu that says "Colors", very complex, DOH! Difficult to use? I admit it's not Adobe Photo Deluxe, that?s why I bought it, I wanted a serious editor, not a toy. The program is somewhat complex at first because it provides tools necessary to produce quality results. Simple editors don't produce quality results. If all you want to do is adjust contrast, unsharp mask, and brightness stick with the free software that came with your printer of download some freeware somewhere. If you really want to edit and create images PSP is great.

Simply Wonderful

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using this program daily for 1 year. I'm continually amazed at the power of this inexpensive program. I do graphics for games and for the web and have found it to be an absolute miracle worker. Admittedly, it will take awhile to learn the program, but that is true of any good art program. I've installed it on 25 different computers (I tend to buy and sell computer a lot...but I never have it installed on more than one computer at a time:)) I've never had it destroy a computer or cause a problem. A winner!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have bought PSP7 a year ago or so, and I have always used it and I am satisfied with it. I heard of Photoshop 6, and it's fantastic reviews et al...and I downloaded the trial. It's packed of features but it's so difficult to use I couldn't bother to learn it, when PSP7 gave me whatever I wanted and more and with a friendly interface. FOR YOU GRAPHICS USERS OUT THERE, DON'T BOTHER USING PHOTOSHOP REALLY, GET PAINT SHOP PRO!!! I think to use Photoshop 6 well you have to do an image editing course. Otherwise, PSP7 ruleeeez.

A Great Photo Editor

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently upgraded from PSP5 to PSP7 and at first I found 7 to be harder to use. After a little time I found that the only reason it was harder to use was because they packed so many new features into it. Now after using it for a few weeks I couldn?t imagine using anything else. The program has also been more stable that PSP5. For the price, you just can?t beat it.

WARNING!! on Paint Shop Pro 7

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My first experience with Paint Shop Pro was several years ago as a shareware download. I thought the overall package was exceptional. Recently, I found Paint Shop Pro 7 for Windows at Costco for around $60, and bought it. Please don't make the same mistake. This product screwed up my very stable, problem free computer!! It took approx 6 hours for me to straighten out the problems (I have 15 yrs of PC experience). I installed it successfully, but my first access to the installation window blew up my Office toolbar, and LOCKED my hard drive. I eventually fixed the problems without a rebuild of the entire system, but it was close. I have nothing against this company, and do not wish to slander anyone. All I want to do is inform. I offer you the strongest warning NOT to use this product.

Review: I love PaintShop Pro and AnimationShop. Both programs are so easy to use. I love the options and enhancing features of PSP and tell everyone I know who works with images about the program and that they should get it.

User Rating: 6/10

cheap, powerful but NOT intuitive

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After spending a lot of time on tutorials and reading several PSP books I'm finally realizing the power and depth of this program. If you have the patience to learn it's a pretty great program. The color and gradient interfaces are particularly bad, effects filters are not easily accessible. Preview, vector, drawing tools, web tools are all great.

Makes Photoshop look like a dinosaur.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Using Paint Shop Pro to do my graphic files for eBay was a snap. It's Product Tour get me started real quick. And it's $100 price tag makes it a real bargain. A great all around graphic program.

User Rating: 10/10

Does the job.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can get my work done a lot faster in PSP. I have found that I can do things in PSP that I cannot do in PS5.5.

User Rating: 8/10

Worth The Price of Admission!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i've been using this program since v2 and it's only gotten better each time. my biggest complaint now is that when i use the scroll wheel to zoom on .jpg images, sometimes it stops functioning. other than that, powerful bit map editor with vector features that i use almost daily.

User Rating: 7/10

Excellent choice for everyone

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Personally, I prefer PSP over Adobe's Photoshop because of its ease of use and almost similar features. In fact, I have been able to do better quality drawings in less time using PSP over Photoshop. Many of my friends who use Photoshop are now also starting to see that PSP is much better, and especially for those with older computers (and notebooks), PSP is a much better choice because it is small and does not require a lot of system resources to run, allowing for longer uses with a notebook running off batteries.

great program, if you know what to do w/ it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I dont really know much about paint programs, but i found this more difficult to use than Photoshop. If u have patience, then this is for you.

This rocks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Photoshop is too complicated, too pricy, and way overrated. Paintshop is a much better choice.

User Rating: 9/10

Prefer it to Photoshop!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a high end user of graphic software and I will admit that this is not for everyone. But the options, flexibility, and power of this tool make it a must for anyone who really wants to work with graphics. Thanks Jasc.

Don't waste money on Adobe products!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The first image editor I used was Photoshop 4, but when 5 came out, i though i'd try something new before upgrading, and i instantly fell in love with PSP. It has every feature of photoshop i've ever used (and i've used up to ver.6 of PS), plust the interface is so much better. Its so much easier to get around PSP than photoshop. Plus, 99% of photoshop tutorials ive read can be ported to PSP, and all of the filters are compatable. Not to mention the $500 price difference. Conclusion: PSP r0x0rz your b0xerz!

User Rating: 6/10

A great choice . . .

Pros:

Cons:

Review: . . . but it ain't Photoshop. Its biggest weakness if using filters or other manipulations on very large files (20 to 80 megs). It just chokes and dies. However, great for medium to small files. Much slower than PS 6 in many aspects. I have them both. For examples see www.dustylens.com

It's the best buy for the money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the product-price combination to beat. I have tried them all and always come back to Paint Shop. It is worth at least half the price of overpriced Adobe PS

Phenominal Cosmic Graphics (Itty Bitty Price - Relatively)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After trying several different programs for creating web graphics, and I realized that Paint Shop Pro offers the best bang for the buck. It does just about anything Photoshop can do, sometimes better. I'm particularly fond of PSP7's photo enhancing tools, which allow users to adjust light, correct color, reduce noise, and so on. These features are an absolute must for anyone who scans in their photos. My only pet peeve with PSP7 is the color swatch interface. It includes a feature to switch the paint style from a solid color to either a gradient or a pattern. The control to switch between those options is awkward at best, and oftentimes, it just gets in the way of productivity. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next version. All in all, though, it's an excellent program. It's very stable, it reads many different image formats (including Photoshop's .PSD format), and it even comes with animation software that's easy to use. Oh, and did I mention you can use most Photoshop plugins with PSP? There's no question about it. For great graphic output at a reasonable price, PSP7 is the way to go.

User Rating: 10/10

Great bang for the buck.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I find it very easy to use. With 3-5 clicks all photos are altered and ready to save/print. Much easier/quicker than Photoshop. Remember to do the search for update from within the program. It is up to version 7.04. These updates are free.

Price/feature ratio is superb!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used PSP for many years and while it may lack a few of Photoshop's more exotic features, for the price it does virtually everything you might expect of a top level graphics editing program.

User Rating: 9/10

Simplicity and Quality at its best

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is simply the easiest and more versatile graphics program I have ever tried. If you are trying to create professional graphics this is the software.

User Rating: 8/10

Excellent and Affordable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is one of the best purchases I've made in the past year. For home users looking for an affordable alternative to Adobe Photoshop, look no further. PSP7 has all the major comparable editing features that you would use in PhotoShop 99% of the time, plus you get vector graphics tools in the same package. You would have to buy Adobe Illustrator separately to get these. Add the fact that you also get Animation Workshop which allows you to do animated GIFs, and a suite of other integrated web tools, such as image mapping and slicing, and you have a web designer's best friend all in one box. As for the other comments I've read, I have never, ever had this product crash, and I've been using it for nearly 12 months now. Chalk those up to personal system problems. This was a highly stable product even before the patch came out. As for the ease of use issues, I say, as with most software products, RTM - "Read the Manual"! There is an excellent little book included with the retail version called the "Getting Started Guide" which will introduce you to all the major tools. It provides tutorials to get you up to speed quickly and with little effort (I especially recommend Chapters 3 & 9). Those already familiar with graphic editors like PhotoShop already know that these types of programs are only but so intuitive. You usually have to read to learn the advanced features, regardless of the product. What you get out of them is usually what you put into them. PSP7 is no different, no easier, but certainly no harder either. Bottom line is this is an outstanding product, especially considering the price. Yes, it's less expensive than PhotoShop but there were no compromises made in this product. Buy it with confidence.

User Rating: 9/10

PSP well worth it.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I started my graphics work on PhotoShop, but that all changed when I rcvd a copy of PSP 3.03 with a Packard Bell pc. Since then, I've been able to do everything I've needed in PSP, without the cost, and with more compatibility. There are only a few minor issues, such as cmyk matching in v7, which was present in v6. I highly recommend this program for both the beginner and experienced user alike. One word of caution though, it's easy to go from Photoshop to PSP, but going back is kinda hard.

User Rating: 8/10

Great program!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The negative comments about this program are rediculous! Half of them are morons complaining about the download time/trial expiration and the other half sound like teenagers who spent 5 minutes on PSP and gave up to go back to MS Paint! PSP includes most of PhotoShop's features, and can even do several things faster.

User Rating: 9/10

Better value per dollar

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Paintshop Pro has more than 95 percent of the Photoshop features that I use, but costs less than one fifth of Photoshop's price. Also, Adobe continues with its tradition of splitting related features into separate products (profit). It costs a small fortune to purchase all of the different Adobe products needed for general graphics work. PaintShop Pro combines some of those features into a single product. Lastly, PaintShop Pro allows a wider variety of file formats for output files than Photoshop does. Adobe needs to wake up. Jasc has the right idea. Even though I still use PhotoShop for some tasks, I don't plan to buy the next version. I do plan to buy the next versions of Paint Shop Pro.

User Rating: 7/10

Powerful, feature ladened paint program.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Paint Shop Pro has a lot of great features for creating or enhancing picture files. But if it had a downside, it that because there are so many features to be had, they are difficult to choose when all you need is something simple. The tool bars are a little tricky to navigate around and memorize. When choosing colors to work with, you have the option of using whatever is available specific to your graphics type. But there is no option to directly choose black or white, two of the most basic colors! You have to scan around the color grid manually. Some of the most basic tools are not that easily to be had (or accessible) when you need it quickly, like choosing a brush type/size, or doing shapes like circles and squares. The most basic paint tools should be there when you need it the most. Despite the complexities, the tools are very good, like modifying color schemes (i.e., you can make subjects look like they are bathed in sunlight or flourescent light). It also does a fairly decent job of sharpening/softening pictures. Other things like adding "starbursts," removing red-eye, adding lighting schemes to make it look like light is coming from a particular angle are nice. The special effects you can apply is what makes this product a stand out. For those who need a simpler alternative, Neopaint is very good, too. It doesn't have as many features, but is very easy to use for those who just need a basic painting program.

PSP Is A Rival Of Photoshop

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have Photoshop 6.01 and I just bought PSP 7.02 and I very much prefer PSP since it is not so confusing like Photoshop, not to mention the pricetag is much less than what the fiends at Adobe are charging. Besides, what kind of a name is that - Adobe?

I haven't had to install PhotoShop yet!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: PSP has met my needs for years. v7.04 is the best yet. No, I'm not a "professional" designer or graphic artist, but I do create websites and numerous marketing materials. I haven't found anything that I can't do with PSP.

PSP = Love

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I'm more than proficient with Photoshop, having quite some time and experience spent with it. It's an industry standard for good reason, yet I don't feel the need to go into that matter, as it's been overly done in other reviews. Multiple image editing software programs are really a necessity when you do a lot of work in the field. I could go on and on, writing quite an eloquent review, however, I'm going to keep it short. -PSP offers nearly every feature of PS. -Many of the features and commands are simpler and faster. -Memory load and performance seem genuinely better. -Simple and customizable interface. There are many more, yet I'll simply say: I truly prefer Paintshop Pro to Photoshop.

User Rating: 5/10

A good program for the price, but it's no Photoshop.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The difference between Photoshop and PSP is like riding a bike or driving a car to the store. Both will get you there but one will get you there faster and in turn, be harder to use. The other will be much slower, but is much easier to use. COnsidering the fact that PSP uses many of Photoshops filters, unexperienced users who rely on filters will be quite happy. To the experienced user, you'd better look elsewhere.

User Rating: 8/10

Shareware That's Actually WORTH The Price!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using Paint Shop Pro since ver. 4 and with each new version it simply gets better. PSP has and does just about everything that so-called "Industry Standard" utility offers plus has a few tricks of its own. PSP is simple enough for beginners to learn the basics yet is flexible enough and has plenty of tools to keep experienced users busy for quite a while. A couple of things could've been done a little better, like the Image Mapping/Splicing feature. But even these negatives are pretty trivial. It may not be the program of choice for most graphic arts professionals. But until it is, think of Paint Shop Pro as Photoshop with a $500 discount.

Easy to use with really good results!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Since version 3, this has been my Photo Editor of choice (since 1995). It comes with lots of features and easy to use tools. Resizing and poliching images for Web use is really easy!

Fantastic value

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Go look at the silly, childish negative comments like, "it sucks cause it takes to long to download" or "it sucks because it's not free" and other idiotic, moronic remarks. Factor that into the overwhelmingly positive remarks in you'll realize what a great program it is. Fantastic value for its capability and features!

User Rating: 9/10

Everything they say it is.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Had recieved a copy of Arcsoft Photostudio and Adobe Photoshop Elements with new Canon scanner. Downloaded Paint Shop Pro & from their web site. Tryed all 3 to see which would best suit my needs. No contest. Spent the money and ordered Paint Shop Pro 7. They even included a free copy of " Complete Idiots Guide for Paint Shop Pro 7" for nothing, and free shipping. Before I ordered I sent a email to the tech support to see how fast and complete they would respond. They got back to me with detailed answer in hours. Gotta love it.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As a long-time Photoshop user, I hate to admit it, but PSP is better. The .psp format is far more versatile. Why? Layers, for one.

Retouching photos is great!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Oh man, when I first installed PSP 7, I was not impressed. It sill looked like the same old PSP 6. But I was greatly mistaken! The menus were reorganized, and the photo retouching tools are great! I was able to fix color-imbalanced photos in no time. And still unlimited undo! :)

User Rating: 9/10

Better than photoshop!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Simple and powerfull tool for all kinds of photo editing jobs. Don't be shy to buy this software because it's a shareware. I'm a profesionnal photographer and I was looking for a tool easy to use but at the same time full of resources. I FOUND IT!

User Rating: 8/10

Extremely good but takes time

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Very good thought it takes a while to get used to the interface and how to use all the tools.

User Rating: 10/10

Indispensable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Has everything I need to restore and correct damaged or poorly taken photos (masks, levels, curves, layers, edge preserving smooth, clarify, unsharp mask, gaussian blur, H/S/L, manual color correction, great selection and clone tools...), create quality graphics (vector shapes, tubes, brushes, a large assortment of patterns, textures and effects...) plus it's easy to use, very stable (I regularly scan/import 10mb+ images with no freezes or crashes), and extremely affordable. Can't imagine working without it.

User Rating: 6/10

The poorest documentation on earth.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Although PaintShop has been around for a long time, one thing has stayed stagnant throughout it's development from a free shareware utility to a sophisticated graphics application - the documentation and help file(s) are abysmal. There are lttle or no help segments dealing in detail with the powerful tools available, examples of these tools are non-existant and the tutorials were designed for a two year old. For all the colorful examples on the box and pretty images on the CD, it's still a shareware application trying to keep up with the Adobe giants of the software world. 99% of possible PaintShop users are not experts, they are beginners lloking for a cost effective solution to a new digital imaging problem - what do do with all those files coming off the new digital camera they just bought. Although PaintShop could help them, unless the documentation improves, it will always be a second fiddle to the Adobe Photoshop LE packages shipped with most cameras. Fix it, or be second forever.

User Rating: 7/10

You get much more than what you've paid for...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: We can critique, anything under the sun. When you get something like PaintShop for $90, it is a steal, and a great value. It doesn't have the best interface; but then if it had, then it would cost a few $$ more right? Features are great, and so is sophistication in version 7. My 2 thumbs up for a great value!
