"Adobe's 2d fist is knocking on Autodesk's big 3d door"

    by helix808 on April 30, 2007

Pros: The tool you will want for seamless 2d 3d integration. For the digital matte painter, for the interactive web designer to the designer who needs that quick and dirty composite like yesterday.

Cons: Not the best tool out there for rotoscoping.

Summary: There has been a need for Photoshop to be more friendly to 3d packages. Now that you can go back to the 2d world with a 3d model will you use it. Before CS3 you had less flexibility between the 3d world and the 2d.Yes you could import a psd from a 3d package but then you would have to mask out the the 3d element into a 2d environment. what a pain. Now you don't and now you can adjust the 3d element for the best alignment in a 2d comp, or work with independent 3d elements to composite in independent layers.

If your final output is to the 2d this extra 3d element in Photoshop cs3 can give more polish to a composite than having to go back and forth between your favorite 3d package. The longer you can stay in one sofware app the more productive you are. Photoshop cs3 is not a swiss army knife creation tool as we think it is, but having more options in Photoshop will make you more productive with your workflow.

This edition will help out alot of designers who want that prototype in a real world setting before its made. Architects who want to win the competition and sell the dream house to their clients.

I think this edition of Photoshop will make digital sets and previz a snap. Marketing vapor products and services has just gotten alot easier with Photoshop cs3. I just think the only problem is the rotoscoping ability in Photoshop cs3. It is still crude and will have along ways to go to compete with Autodesk's powerhouse products in the roto area. Panting on video has been a missed oportunity in Photoshop. using an clumsy imageready timeline to roto is horiblie. the people who roto will know what I mean in older versions of Photoshop/Imageready. You can do do roto in Photoshop but why? It's cool that you can have video cloning tools in Photoshop but it seems more like a parlor trick than a real pro rotoscoping tool.It needs more refinement. Just don't call it Autodesk Combustion quality just yet.

However Adobe has been a great alternative to the small studio or indie filmamker. Photoshop cs3 extended never will be comprimise if you do buy it for your small production house or for the laptop filmaker on a tight deadline.
