You have to hand it to Microsoft. For all the company's faults, it certainly turned out a good product in Picture It. This easy-to-use photo editor packs a variety of editing tools, such as brightness, tint, and red-eye adjustment, and tops it all off with a sterling help system that includes animation and a manual. Our only major complaint: Microsoft sticks in occasional and irritating self-promotional ads. Intrusion aside, however, Picture It is our top choice for both novices and more ambitious experimenters.

Quick start
After a smooth if somewhat lengthy installation, the program starts with a snazzy welcome screen. To begin a project, select from a variety of templates, such as calendars, business cards, stickers, brochures, albums, or envelopes. Or just open and edit a digital image by accessing files from your hard drive or acquiring new images from scanners, a camera, or your MSN Photos online photo album. If you're not sure how to get started, visit the help menu and launch one of several well-designed animated sequences that illustrate how to use various features. In fact, all the program's context-sensitive help features are superb and usually available when you need them.

Once you have chosen the image you plan to work on, Picture It brings you to the main work space. Thumbnails on the right side of the screen let you access different layers of your project. Below the main window, you'll find thumbnails of the images you've worked on recently, along with a slide bar to let you adjust the image size of your current project. On the left sits the tool panel, which offers either a clickable list of options (for tweaking, say, size, color, or depth) or step-by-step instructions on how to use each instrument. Unfortunately, Picture It sometimes uses that same side panel to exhibit a number of promotional special offers, which simply clutter the work space and are, frankly, quite annoying.

Oodles of tools
Picture It boasts a remarkable number of editing tools. Like Photo Express and PhotoImpression, Picture It makes it easy to adjust brightness, tint, and size and to correct red-eye--all you do is choose the appropriate tool and click the image. If you wish, you can add several artistic special effects, which Microsoft calls Illusions. These effects can re-create your photo as a charcoal or pencil sketch. Other special effects let you distort the image by pulling it out of shape, paint over or fill in areas with a variety of colors and brush strokes, or add a 3D look. Picture It also lets you add virtual picture frames, mattes, and backgrounds, or you can choose from a large number of categorized clip art and templates that include animals, clothing, and cartoons. When you're finished, organize your images in Picture It's gallery--categorize them, name them, and add keywords.

Unlike Photo Express and PhotoImpression, Picture It includes tools to remove scratches and dust and restore the focus and contrast of old photographs. We worked on a damaged black-and-white photo and were able to sharpen it significantly. However, oddly enough, the cloning tool, which lets you make exact copies of any portion of your image, did a better job fixing scratches than did Picture It's dedicated Remove Scratch tool.

Share it in on the Web
Once you've completed your project, Picture It lets you export it in several different formats. You can save an image in a traditional format, such as JPEG or BMP. Or, like the other two packages we reviewed, Picture It offers a free online service, MSN Photos, that lets you save up to 30MB worth of images into your own Web album. You can also order Fuji prints of your photos starting at 49 cents per 4x6-inch print from the site, a service that is not available from either Ulead or ArcSoft.

Click the Tech Support button in the "About Microsoft Picture It" menu selection to access copious help options, including numerous FAQs, Q&As, and e-mail support. For live help, Microsoft offers free phone service on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (PT), longer hours than those offered by its competitors. For corporate users who need after-hours help, Microsoft Professional Support is available 24/7 for $245 per incident.

Bigger and better
Microsoft has done itself proud in its latest version of Picture It. If you ignore its annoying ads, you'll find Picture It a comprehensive and useful product for tweaking, organizing, and publishing your photography collections.

If you have an old, damaged photo, it's easy to use one of Picture It's editing tools to sharpen and repair valuable memories.

Using it for years. Very user friendly.

Pros: Ease of use. Photo editing features are excellent.

Cons: I find it difficult to print single photos directly from this program. I usually have to do the editing here and save it to print from HP Photosmart program.

Pros: edit pictures, make all of our labels, Christmas cards, business cards, etc.

Cons: I have not had any complaints with this product.

Review: This is one of the easiest software products I have come across. I have searched for like products for my Mac because I have not found anything like it.

great product

Pros: easy to use

Cons: It is not available for Vista or my 64 bit OS

Review: I have used this product since 2001 and expected to be able to continue using it when I purchased my new PC. When will a new Microsoft Picture It Platinum be available for our new PC's?

When is this programme going to work with VISTA????

Pros: I have loved this programme for YEARS!!!

Cons: Imagine my unhappy surprise when I bought a new computer to find it would not work with VISTA

Review: You sure dropped the ball here Microsoft.
You create an operating system for people who buy new computers at hefty prices only to find that even YOUR!!!! Programmes do not work on it. I am very unhappy about not being able to have my Picture It Publishing on my new computer. I am very disappointed in Microsoft! Bill Gates leaves and the new people can't seem to think at all! Don't get Vista people!!!!

I think this is a wonderful product for the person who is not an experience photo person.

Pros: I have been having such fun with adding photos and art to calendars for the family.

Cons: I probably don't know how to use but seems that if I don't like a picture from gallery, when i cut it and try to go back to same category, Ihave to start all over.

Much worse than my earlier version

Pros: This product has many good features

Cons: Many of the good features are more cumbersome than my earlier version. When I want to crop a picture, I have to select ?whole picture?, otherwise I only crop the image (the older version only cropped the whole picture, which is what I always want to do).

Frequent crashes

Pros: Nice features. Nice integration of basic picture editing and publishing.

Cons: Bugs, bugs, bugs. Frequently couldn't get saved files to load without crashing the computer. It is truly gut-wrenching to create exactly what you want, print it, save it, and then find that you can't open it.

Pros: Ease of use, great templates, excellent mail merge concept.

The best that I've used

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've used Adobe, Print Sop Deluxe, Photo suite and this is the bvest and easiest to use that I've experiened. These reviewers that have system crashes must have some serious problems with thier systems. They should install a good utility and use them oftn . I've install PIP on bothof my PC's.A two year old AMD Athlon and a New P-4 and had absolutely no glitches of anykind. I belive that problem systems are not running utilities as they should.

It freezes up too much!

Pros:

Cons:

User Rating: 6/10

Easy to learn

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Although it's an excellent "starter" kit for photo editing, once you become proficient, it limits creativity.

User Rating: 3/10

Spend more $ on a better product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It has serious stability issues, limited capabilities and a user interface that is not what users are used to seeing in a windows product from Microsoft. A disappointment and not worth the money.

User Rating: 3/10

rather poor support from M/S on OEM programs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Unable register after reinstalling program. Had to remove to correct a problem in OE with spell checker. M/S does not accept the PID number in the program and will not supply any help. DEll unable to help either.

"It will never work"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just got off the telephone with Microsoft tech support. My problem was that I saw only green squares whenever I opened up a card to customize it, no graphics. Mike in tech support said the program had a "bug" or "glitch" and would never work correctly. There was no fix for my problem. I bought this based on it being an Editor's choice on CNET. Pick again. When did it become okay to release programs with bugs and glitches that you never intend to fix? I'm returning it for a full refund and I guess not buying Microsoft.

User Rating: 6/10

crashes too often

Pros:

Cons:

Review: it is obviously a user friendly program, if you have a syst that it can function in. I have pretty robust Dell, with very little fluff installed and continually crash in PIP. It's the only program that I do crash in. I've tried reinstalling but nothing seems to work. Sad. Would advise moving on to a more realiable program.

What,s up?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When 60% of users give a highly rated product a thumbs down, what's up? Like most MS products a highly intrusive install. Returned with a struggle but it is gone!

Very Unstable!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this program to do a website but was very disappointed with the cheezy templates that it had. The program repeatedly freezes up my computer, commits "errors", crashes, and I usually wait up to a minute after I click the mouse for the click to "carry through". I am calling the company tonight although I see it is a Toll call, or you can call toll free but pay a "Fee". yeah, right. Thanks Microsoft.

GREAT PRODUCT!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am not a fan of microsoft but this product was worth it for me to buy. I sell a lot of stuff on ebay and this software helped me out bigtime with getting my pictures just right.

Crashes EVERY time

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I LOVE the features and it is super easy to use...but its not worth it because it is so buggy. It crashed all the time. I am looking for a replacement.

User Rating: 8/10

It definetly works for me

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product is definetly very good for someone who want to get the job done without having to have degree in Computer Science. I use this product in my business and it hasn't let me down yet (for the most part). I have a few crashes here and there, but I would'nt trade it for anything in the world. My only complaint is that I would like the cloning feature to be updated a bit, otherwise on the money!

User Rating: 10/10

it works well

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used this program exclusively for all of our web photos of the custom jewelry we make. it provides everything necesary and more. It was easy to learn, easy to remember and fun to work with and inexpensive. what else could a guy ask for?

Can't Even Install it on Win98

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have bought this product, and had to return it because the second cd was damaged. After getting a replacement.. I attempted to reinstall again and it completely disabled my Operating System. I had to reinstall windows (and I run my business from home - so I wasn't real happy about that to say the least). I have tried installing 8+ times, with and without antivirus software active. (Why it suggests you disable you antivirus software makes me wonder [spyware?]) Also - after numerous attempts at installation, after every time it freezes up I run Win Doctor and find out it has removed 140+ microsoft shared files. I am planning on calling Microsoft directly Tuesday and expect a free working copy with all I have had to go through! Not Happy! Robert P.S - If someone else has had similiar problems, and has found a way to finally overcome the installation problems please email me and let me know.

User Rating: 6/10

Unstable and slow

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I really wish this worked better because it has a lot of good features and is easy to use. But it does crash and is VERY slow when it does work. I have Photoshop and Paintshop Pro on my computer and both work flawlessly, so it is not my computer. In fact it is the only program of any type that does not work properly on my computer. I cannot understand why there seems to be such variation among users in regard to the program's stability. Can't find any useful tech support or online help that would lead to resolution of the problems. My summary - close but no cigar.

User Rating: 7/10

Takes forever to use the save as feature

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I run this on Windows XP Pro with over 500 megs of Ran and a Pent 4 system. When I use the save as feature..or even try to get a picture of file from my harddrive it takes FOREVER for them to load...this sucks and no other photo editing application I use has such problems.

User Rating: 8/10

The best of all I've tried!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I first got into computer publishing when I started using Print Shop. For a few years I thought that this was the best- Until Microsoft Publisher. You dould create nice looking things on Print shop but nothing really neat and tidy. Publisher lasted about 8 months. I soon got tired of it's restricting features and began to look at Print House. This was a Corel product. As good as it was, I had a ton of trouble getting clip art and my computer kept shutting it down. For a long while I had used a really nice picture software that was called "Picture It!" when I noticed "Picture It!" Publishing Platinum I decided to get it, especially since it was so well priced as compared to the other products of the kind. It has definately impressed me. For such a trying program it is remarkably stable (altough it has been known to falter) and the options are never ending! The text options are wonderful and the 3D-Effect is outstanding. To sum it all up I very strongly recomend this product.

User Rating: 8/10

Pretty simple to use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I run it on Windows ME, occasionally I get a low memory error, but I am working with fairly large graphics and more often then not I am multitasking. I found it very easy to get used to. I do have to agree about the advertisement portion, but overall I have been very happy with the results.

User Rating: 6/10

Unstable pre-beta junk.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It promises alot, and could be great. But I have never seen any program crash so much, not even shareware. Tried every fix MS suggested, no go. I give up!

User Rating: 5/10

More Crashes than a blind man in a demolition derby

Pros:

Cons:

Review: "PIP caused an invalid page fault in module PIPCORE6.DLL at 017f:6318a849." Program is very descriptive in what you can do, the features are explained to beautifully in the user interface. Now, if only you could use those features reliably w/o crashing the program. I would expect Microsoft to produce a program that worked on its own operating systems more reliably.

User Rating: 4/10

Stick w/Picture It 2000

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Picture It 2000 was a good, straightforward photo editing program. The redone interface on 2002 is cumbersome and time consuming, and the program is unstable -- if you stick w/Microsoft, stay with the old program.

User Rating: 4/10

Crashes System Frequently

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I would agree with the other reviewers that this is a very unstable product. I have tried it on a Win98 and a WinXP computer and it crashes on both, even though I have lots of RAM. It is not good for fixing red eye on digital photos; it makes the eyes black and sometimes the auto feature blackens half the face. It is good if you want to create things from the templates - that is, if you can keep your system from crashing. I can open 70+ large pictures (500 MG+ each) in HP PhotoPrint and 20 in Photoshop Elements and my computer never crashes.

User Rating: 3/10

Another bloated, sluggish MS product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am totally disappointed with the product--while I see (and hear) that it has rich features, I have yet to get to them because I refuse to sit for 3-5 minutes to see its reaction to my "click". My PC is a Athlon 1GHz 768MB RAM -- so I don't think I short changed the "product" on resources. Just another example of a bloated MS product that lessens our "productivity."

User Rating: 5/10

Keep away if you value sanity

Pros:

Cons:

Review: ALthough loaded with features, this one of the most unstable programs I have used! My wife makes calendars, but PIP ALWAYS crashes when opening new calendars now (my pc is an XP1900+, 768MB RAM..system is up to par I think!). The only way to get it to work is to open something else, like a Business Card template, then go back and open the Calendar template. REDICULOUS. Plus, don't you dare expect any tech support or patches..so far as MS is concerned, its a fault with your PC. I've reinstalled WinXP, reinstalled PIP, all updated drivers and still the same errors. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT.

User Rating: 6/10

Not if you are doing digital images!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I found this product to have VERY limited digital photo editing capabilities. It will only handle very basic editing of pictures. It does, however, have many neat features for various other projects such as cards, banners, envelopes, etc... The version of Adobe Photodeluxe that came with my Epson printer puts this program to shame when it comes to digital editing. If it's digital images you want to work with.....STAY AWAY from this one!!

Great Photo Program

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the best photo program I have used. I have a lot of programs more expensive than this one that are not as good. Thanks, good job.

User Rating: 6/10

Seems good to me

Pros:

Cons:

Review: As a novice I needed something easy and this is yet the finished product is excellent.

User Rating: 2/10

counter intuitive interface

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Simple things should be simple - they're not. Making 2 5x7 prints on a single sheet (for instance) requires selecting pictures, opening a new project and then hand dimensioning the photos. MS has abandoned their interface specs with this one and it's easy to get lost. Finally, I had problems with large numbers of photos in the flat (no folders) gallery.

User Rating: 6/10

Freezes up very frequently.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This product is not worth it, as it has been impossible for me to finish any project more complex than simple cropping. I bought it to use the multimedia email features, but with all the constant freeze-ups, requiring restarting my computer, it can take hours for what should take only one. I have Windows 98, an 80 GB hard drive and tons of RAM. I don't know what the problem is, but I am now sorry I bought it.

User Rating: 10/10

Awesome once you pass the learning curve!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I first got this I was very disappointed and frustrated by it...it seemed so cumbersome to use, and I could never get it to do what I wanted. But I stuck with it, read a help file or 2 and before you know it it was like second nature to use. Now I can't speak highly enough about it!! The choices are so emence that sometimes it can be almost overwhelming (but better too many choices than not enough) The photo editing features are easy to use and work wonderfully. The cloning is the only feature that frustrates me as your base point moves as you correct. (The previous software I had you had the CHOICE of the base point moving or staying stationary...this was a wonderful option that I miss.) I use the software primarily to scrapbook photos of my daughter (first child...go figure). Anyway, it is absolutely FABULOUS on both the photo editing side and the scrapbook side!! Their prefab album pages are just so-so, but with limitless options why use prefab....most of the time I make custom pages. Give yourself some time to get to know the ins and outs of the product, and I promise you will LOVE IT!!!

User Rating: 3/10

What a hunk of junk!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this so called "program" because of the raves it received here. What a bunch of $&%@ this thing is. I have a high end gaming system (1.2 P4, 512 ram, 64meg video card etc.) so I know it was not my system, but every time I use this program it freezes. This is a fresh install of Win 98se. Nothing else freezes except PictureIT. I almost never buy the cheapest program but I thought to myself "Well everyone seems to like it, I'll give it a go.", boy was I wrong. Anyone want to buy a used copy of PictureIT?

Incomplete Software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This will not work on a system without the user having admin rights. In our home, we have 7x24 internet connections and kids and parents and guest and NO ONE has admin rights. This is a pretty bad showing from Microsoft. The product is okay, my wife likes it for her digital photo work and there are tons (although propriotary format) of art and clips. LAME.

User Rating: 8/10

Finally, something that works!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Look, this product does have some interface issues and is basically an ad for MS services, but so does Adobe's stuff. I've tried every "cheap" imaging product and own PhotoShop 6.0. Of the cheapies, this is the best. It works and works well and is significantly easier (and therefore faster) than PS 6. I use this with PhotoExplorer Pro to manage my image library and my web photo album.

User Rating: 4/10

Won't run even on the best system!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Had problems installing on my K-6 500 AMD system (3 years old with lots of memory and space) so I waited until I got my new state of the art system with 1.6 ghz AMD XP processor and all the toys. It still crashes the system. Nevr had this problem with Photoshop or any others I have installed. It is almost impossible to get it all off your system and the files you made with it are in Microsoft's format which nobody elses program will work with. Buy something else (Adobe Elements)! You will be much happier! This website rates Microsoft's products higher because they are a big advertiser in their magazines. I bought the program for $20. If it ever worked or I could get tech support in less than 45 minutes I would have gotten my money's worth.

User Rating: 5/10

Incomplete program!!!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I attempt to use some of the humor cards, I get green squares in my project instead of the proper clip art. Have read of others having the same problem (in the picture it newsgroup on MS).

User Rating: 4/10

Not for the Novice . . . Unless you like PAIN

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This could be a great program, but the novice end user should beware; you will spend hours trying to figure out how to fix your own mistakes, go back to a previous screen, or even how to delete something. Comparison; My novice wife was able to use and produce lots of goodies from the MGI program in minutes, while after 3 hours of messing around with the MS product, nothing was printed. She spent all of her time trying to fix things and even when I attempted to help the end result was, just kill it and start over.

User Rating: 2/10

I wouldn't load this - See Comments

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program also loads other programs such as a calendar and creates TSR's. This program takes over your extensions (e.g. jpg). It grabs everything in a manner that is more difficult to fix than a non-MS application. The program causes Outlook Express's spell checker to lock-up and trashes Outlook's relationship to word and excel. Miscrosoft has a series of fixes for this problem on their site (for the previous version.....MS Obviously aware of the problems.... but not willling to fix them ?) In essence, there is no real "Uninstall" for this program, you must download a series of exe files from microsoft and do some registry work to recover. The progam seems geared more to creating cute frames, rather than editing images. Very crude work here. e.g. you save jpegs as "Small" or "Medium" ... Vs a % as found on even MS-Paint.

Can't agree with the Editor's choice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have iPhotoEpress and Firehand Embers and wouldn't give either up for this MS program. Intrusive is a common MS problem. What they don't steal from others, they add in their so so stuff.
