"Excellent Bluetooth Receiver!" on by omegafiler
Pros: Tons of features, great audio quality, rear mini-jack, impressive color LCD that is easy to read in ANY lighting condition, BT works great with included mic, and rather cheap considering the features
Cons: Won't work with typical GM/Pioneer wiring harness (must be hard wired), new "multi-function" button takes getting used to, some rare and minor BT connectivity issues (expected and easily fixed)
Summary: While certainly not a cheap unit, this device is worth every cent. It basically has all the high-end features you expect in a Premier deck, but it also has Bluetooth! So I won't bother talking much about the awesome sound quality, great color LCD that is very easy to read in ANY lighting condition, or the many extra audio features.
Since Bluetooth is of course the feature that sold me on the unit, let's talk more about that. (If you want more info on non-Bluetooth stuff, check out the P7800MP).
I have it paired with my Sprint PPC-6700 PDA phone (latest firmware), and it works great. First thing to note that is your BT phone may not support all the features available. For example, the signal meter, battery level, and phone book transfer don't seem to be supported with my model. Also keep in mind that the manual does indicate that almost all of the "extra" Bluetooth features may or may not work on your particular phone. This is typically the result of your phone not supporting all the bluetooth "protocols" it uses.
The PDA paired up just fine, and once "registered," the P9800BT will remember your phone. It also has an "Auto Connect" feature, that when enabled, will always look for your phone and happily connect to it when it's in range (typically within about 10-20ft).
So here is what happens when you get a call:
1. The phone rings through your stereo (you can pick a few built-in ringers) and the music is muted for you.
2. Caller ID is displayed on the bright/clear LCD (phone number only - unless you programmed or transferred a phone book)
3. You press the handy "Multi-Function" button to answer your call (there is an "auto-answer" feature available) and you are Live with your caller.
4. When the call is over, you may hang up yourself, or wait for the caller to hang-up.
5. Then the music starts playing where it left off.
My friends still can't get over how cool that is.
But what if you want to make a phone call? You've got a few more options!
1. Dial the number on the remote.
2. Use the built-in phonebook (if you transferred or created one yourself) to pick the number to dial.
3. Use call history to dial a previous number
4. Or the way I prefer - use voice recognition! I simply press the Telephone button and then hold down the "Band" button. Then using the voice recognition already programmed in my PPC-6700, say the caller's name, and it dials for you.
So if you've used a hands-free ear-piece with your BT phone, it's rather similar.
This unit is installed in a 2000 Z71 Tahoe with exhaust and big all-terrain tires. So this isn't exactly a "quiet" environment. Which is why I've been very pleased with the call quality. No static, no echo, and both myself and caller can hear each other just fine. If there is an echo, it is because I have the volume turned WAY up (and only the caller hears the echo.) The mic is mounted on the sun visor, but can be mounted anywhere that works in your vehicle (dash, steering column, etc).
Overall, *most* of the initial setup is straight forward - just keep the manual handy for the BT stuff.
I've tried many other "portable" hands-free units; none worked nearly as well as this one. So if you've got BT and want hands-free, I highly recommend this unit! -
"This is an excellent receiver for those who want Bluetooth in their car and want a quality stereo" on by nrhanson
Pros: links with my bluetooth phone, great sound, excellent sound customization, connects and plays my MP3s through IPOD
Cons: Getting use to the multi use button, phone is not entirely supported through the BT features
Summary: This is a great deck for performance enthusiasts who also want bluetooth in their car. For the previous 3 years I had the Alpine 9857, which was the top of the line Alpine deck 3 years ago. I was looking to replace for two reasons. I wanted bluetooth in my car and I wanted IPOD compatibility. This was for both convenience and safety.
I got everything I wanted in this deck. It has the BT features I wanted (although itwas a pain to get my phonebook in the system) and my IPOD connect directly to the system with Pioneer's IPOD connector.
I love good car audio as this is my primary place to listening to music, and this is also a great head unit for that. It has time delay which is a great feature in order to get all of the music to your ears at the same time. As well as a 12 band eq for even more customization.
I highly recommend this unit. Originally I wanted an Alpine as my last two headunits from them have been great. However, their new top of the line head unit they have doesn't have the customization that this unit has or the many features. -
"Phenomenal stereo in multiple ways" on by afijaymz
Pros: Bluetooth phone pairing, ipod control (with adapter), customization, etc...
Cons: not 100% compatible with all phones (nothing is, right?)
Summary: First off, if you can get a deal like I did, it's WELL worth the purchase.
Have this stereo, pioneer sirius tuner and an ipod adapter istalled in my durango. I've paired my Blackberry Pearl (8100) to the stereo.
The major thing that people talk about is the phone pairing, so that's what I'll talk about the most.
Pairing is simple and easy (pretty standard, as far as pairing goes). Synchronizing the address book so the unit has your phone book takes a LONG time for me. But I'm not sure if that's just my phone or if it's something that's universal with all units.
Call volume, like everything on the stereo, can be adjusted to a different level than the other sources. Sound-wise, my friends say that they can tell I'm on a speaker-type phone, but it's not annoying at all. I can drive with the windows down and they hardly can tell the difference.
I have had a problem with compatibility with my Pearl in that I when I use the Voice Recognition feature on my phone, I can't hear the prompts that well on through my stereo. Also, the ringers that are on the stereo aren't loud at all (I can barely hear them). But since the stereo mutes music or the radio for an incoming call, no big deal.
Ipod control is awesome. It's so good, I personally think that the only thing that could make it better would be a bigger face for more text lines to scroll through music. That, and the touch-wheel from a real iPod. But SERIOUSLY... It's great. Full menu controls.
Sirius is good, although I miss the old radios that had presets on the stereo unit itself. Your presets are controlled by your remote (which, i forgot to mention, is a way you can dial your phone, if you don't want to use your phone). Curiously, not all digits work. Presets only go from 1-6. No big deal, for me.
The only other thing that I could come close to complain about, is that I miss Pioneer's old style of head unit that had two dials to control. Instead of one jog dial and one volume control, they put it together. For example, in the old styles, you could turn the dial over and over to go through stations manually. If you want to do that now, you have to press the multifunction button to the right over and over. Either that, or use your remote.
Overall, I LOVE this head-unit. The best built-in iPod that I know of. -
"Awsome stereo" on by x_caliber94
Pros: high/low pass filters 16 band eq to many to list
Cons: sometimes hard to see in sun
Summary: I love this radio. You can adjust every aspect of your music to the rest of your system or however you like. it has seperate low and high pass filters for both front and back speakers. It has a 16 band equilizer. It has a lot of othe rvery cool features for audio too.
I like the bluetooth in this radio. It is a very cool feature. I like to be able to answer the phone while im driving without taking my hands of the wheel. It shows who is calling on the face of the radio. Very cool.
