Pros This printer has absolutely stellar print quality right out of the box. When it's printing you can scarcely hear it, and when it isn't printing, it just looks so darn good!
Cons Major problem - when you print glossy photos from the bottom paper tray the rollers remove the gloss from the paper, causing roller marks to stripe your entire image. Some scratching evident.
Summary If this printer were a bit more gentle with the paper it would be a 10 no question, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to handle glossy photo paper well enough, with the roller problem above being my major gripe. It seemed like a wonderful thing to simply be able to keep this great looking thing on my desk all closed up with paper loaded, all you have to do to print a photo out is drop the paper support down and hit print. Sadly any glossy print has to be done through the top feeder otherwise you get those nasty roller marks. Even feeding through the top though there is some very light scratching on the page surface that marrs an otherwise stunning print. It's pretty astonishing to me Canon didn't resolve these issues before launch, but I guess the problems were too difficult to solve, so the result is a very sophisticated print head design with a clumsy paper feed system. 7/10. *sigh*Updated
The "tire mark" roller issue has been corrected by running the bottom plate cleaning feature. It seems odd that one should have to run this straight from the factory, but thank god the feature exists! Now glossy prints come out clean and just as sexy as the printer. Thank you Canon, for this gem of a printer. 10/10!
Pros Beautiful photos and fast, crisp text. Inexpensive ink. Useful paper options. Easy to use.
Cons Best with Canon paper. Prints might fade.
Summary I have owned many printers from lasers to dedicated photo printers, and this one is the best printer I have used, outshining ones that cost much more. Using Canon Photo Paper Pro, borderless pictures look they came straight from a photo lab. Black text flies out of the printer and looks like it came from a laser printer.
The little extras that come with this printer are also very useful. Keeping regular paper in the bottom tray and using the top feeder for photo paper eliminates the hassle of paper switching. By using the duplex mode I am using a lot less paper than I used to, and the ink cost per page is less than my old laser and inkjet printers. The included software makes the printer very easy to use.
So far I have seen none of the problems I have had with other inkjets, like paper feed problems. I am concerned about fading because I have had that problem with other printers using similar inks, but I haven't had the printer long enough to know how much of an issue this will be.
Pros Fast, amazing color, extremely user friendly, incredibly easy setup, sleek low profile design is excellent.
Cons Absolutely none that I have found after a month of use.
Summary Having been a diehard HP fan for many years, the switch was difficult but made much easier by the flawless performance of this Canon printer. The color is amazing, the speed is incredible, probably the only one that actually meets manufacturers claims. I priced ink and found it very reasonable at a number of sources. The ease of installation was amazing, it was very straightforward. I actually am considering purchasing another one as a backup since we do high quantity printing. I love HP but I am a convert now. Cnet reviews were what I based my choice on so I would strongly advise checking this site before purchasing anything techie.Updated
I noticed a sheet of labels going in crooked but it was too late to do anything about it. The printer pulled it in and out by itself 2 or 3 times and actually straightened the paper before it printed. I was amazed!
Pros Highest Resolution(9600 x 2400), auto preinthead alighnment, does not print when front tray closed, folds up to save space, dual paper inputs, duplexing, individual ink, very efficient ink usage
Cons output tray flips down easily and slams hard, just need to be carefull when opening it.
Summary First of I love this printer. I finally gave up on my Epsons with non glossy durabrite and perpetual clogging (owned C80 and C84).
I read the reviews for the iP500 and had very high expectations, but was a little skeptical because I once tried a 960 a few years back and it was horrible. I decided to give Canon another chance and I'm glad I did. The very first photo I printed out on the free Photo Paper Pro sample looked better than the prints I get from a developer! I've since printed out over 130 4x6 prints and only now my Yellow is running low. the rest of the inks are a little less than 50%! Now that's economy especially since the individual ink tanks are around $9 to $12. I used Office Depot brand high gloss Premium photo paper and the results are great! Just a bit less glossy than Canon paper, but well worth it at less than half the price. From what I calculate with 130 4x6's at 8.5 cents per photo paper (I got a deal with 200 4x6 sheets for $16.99) + ~$20 for ink usage(about 50%) that's aroung 30 cents per photo. Of course it will vary greatly due to the photos.
I have not tried printing text out since I have a laser printer for that. If you're looking for a photo printer this is it! I tried the 9600 resolution versus the 4800 resolution and it made a difference in color more than the dots. At the higher resolution the color was a little closer to the actual. Although, i'm very very picky about that stuff so most people won't notice. Prints as good on generic paper as Canon. Just stay away from the really really cheap paper...no printer will print good on them!
At the high resolution (9600) it will take longer to print. You just can't rush quality! If you don't want to wait and won't notice the difference print it at 4800, you'll still be amazed!
Another thing is that this printer automatially alighns it's print heads. Unlike Epsons where you have to waste several sheets of paper each time straining to see which print looks better and entering the right number!
Final note, be careful when opening the front output try as it falls open hard.
Get this printer and you won't be disappointed.
Pros small, quite, fast, great design, great price
Cons none so far
Summary i just got this printer from ebay yesterday for $111 (about $60 less than advertise at costco) and boy! am i a happy camper! i pluged it in, install ink and set it up in no time.
i love the fact that there are two places to put paper OR photo paper so there's no manual feed or switching back and forth between papers.
i put the photo paper in, and printed out 5 4x6 photos in less than a minute using the included printing software! i was so impressed when i saw the photos i swear i'm no longer going to the labs! and yes 5 4x6 photos in under 1 minute. i checked "vivid colors" and i think "high quality?" using photo paper pro and they look so fantastic i'm estatic!
this is one great photo printer (i have an olympus c7000 camera and am returning it for a canon powershot g6). i'm seeing the inks selling for a very reasonable price (after the lexmark ink prices, anything is reasonable). you have try this printer out to fully see what it can do in terms of photo printing.
i have no doubt it'll be as perfect for text printing too! it's the next best thing to a laser printer, definitely!
