    "Text printing is horrible"

    by Bob5736 on July 11, 2006

Pros: Easy set up and good photo prints

Cons: Only prints text documents in grey scale...no black!

Summary: I just got off the phone with Epson's tech support and was advised this printer will not print text documents with a solid black color! It will only print in greyscale and there's no way to compensate for this problem. When I asked why a $750 printer couldn't print a simple text letter in black the response was "it a professional photo printer". Anyone have a suggestion ? The seller won't take it back since the box was "opened".

This printer has a specific use (photos) and should be used for that. It was not meant for printing text. I have been researching photo printers and have read nothing but great things about this as a photo printer. I have an old photo printer and the pictures fade in weeks. I have a laser printer for bw and color hand outs. If that is what you need you should consider getting a laser printer.

to complain that this photo printer won't print text is akin to complaining that a brand new porsche 911 won't transport 5 people...it was never designed to do the job YOU wanted it to do.

how or why did you even rate this printer given that you obviously did no research and then chose to blame the printer?

it's o.k to admit we make mistakes. i make plenty, but try to minimise the ones that cost money.

    Bob,
You are a ******** moron. It is a professional photo printer. It is designed to print photos, not text. You should have bought a $90 printer and saved yourself the hastle. Your comments should be deleted.

and then complaining about it's poor text output is akin to the brilliance of buying a $60,000 Porsche for the purpose of delivering newspapers and then complaining that Porsche's are bad newspaper delivery vehicles because they're too small.

    Hi Bob,
As you probably are aware, you can purchase a cheap "all-in-one" printer for your text printing needs, etc. These will do a great job unless you are wanting to use 13" wide paper for text (or thicker media).

Bob, did you have any luck with the R2400 and document printing?

    Bob

If one really thinks about it, your comment really is not valid. In fact tech support are, well, spot on.

If you are using this printer for what it was built for you would no doubt have rather expensive consumables loaded so as to produce the best long lasting photos possible.

Why throw money out the window printing text.

I know this is going to sound stupid but I reckon your best solution is to buy another printer.

In fact I would say that this should have been part of your plan in the first place.

And I recommend this to everyone who has the requirements for producing top quality gallery style prints AND who also have a lot of text to print as well.

Crazy you say? Ha this is going to save you money. This text printer will pay for itself in a short period of time.

The best printer for text is one that only prints text, has much much cheaper consumables, the consumables last much much longer and it churns out pages much much faster.

And that would be a laser printer.

You can easily pick up budget lasers that will output super high quality text. And believe me, the consumables are lot lot cheaper than using lab quality photo consumables.

    So don't despair mate.

Arguably you have one of the best photo printers available.

Now do yourself a favor, pick up that laser, get your text done cheaply and quickly and in a short period of time your new laser will pay for itself.

    cheers
    Jim

I bought tbe model lower than what you have the R1800 and it prints black and other colored text beautifully.... The R2400 like the r1800 is especially made to print out pictures and not made to print text... that is why your getting crappy results on the text... but again.. the r1800 is a better printer to print text... but the r2400 is better to print detailed b&W photos.. wanna trade?
