    "Fast inkjet printer, lousy networking"

by zabadoh on May 11, 2009

Pros: Fast printing, 4 different ink cartridges, light weight, low power consumption, nice slick black case.

Cons: Flimsy paper feeder extension and output tray when extended. Two different printers had problems printing through a wired router saying that they had paper jam problems when there obviously weren't any jams.

Summary: When testing this right after installation via direct USB connection, the print quality looked nice and I was impressed by the speed.

Then the horrors began when I tried to print over the network. I tried two different printers of this model and had to return them both. Both had problems printing over a network using ethernet cable. Each time I tried to print, the WF40 spit out a blank sheet, then claimed it had a paper jam when there was obviously no jam at all otherwise that blank sheet would have accordioned, right?. I could ping each printer, so they obviously had good network connections and had acquired addresses from DHCP (192.168.2.xxx). I gave up on these machines after wasting 2 weeks trying to get them to work.

I didn't go through setting them up WiFi/802.11b/g/n.

As I said before, printing directly via USB worked fine, but why wouldn't I then just get the WF30 without networking? Conversely, a different brand networked inkjet printer worked the first time *scratches head*

It turns out the paper jam thing is due to the Workforce models not supporting 3 holed punch paper. http://reviews.cnet.com/multifunction-devices/epson-workforce-600/4864-3181_7-33241136-14.html?tag=userReviews;summaryList

Sorry Epson, you have to say more than just "not supported" to 3 hole punched paper. Something more like a Giant Warning Label is called for.
