Known problems, poor support !

Pros: Sharp colors !

Cons: Like a lot of people, I purchased this printer based on reputation; "Hey ! HP, that is a great brandname ! " Was I disappointed ! For the price, the duplexer should have been a de facto item. But not ! Pay an extra 150$ for it ! Ink cartridges are very

Decent Cad Printer - So So on Photos

Pros: Good solid CAD printer, seems to work with every CAD application we throw at it. Prints fine from an external jetdirect card with very little configuration. Ink cartriges are large even if they are a little expensive. The black cartrige holds a whopping 6

Cons: Comes with black starter (29 ml) cartrige. Photo quality is only so so, but printer technology and imaging are fairly old. Drivers seems tempermental in some cases - recommend downloading latest drivers.

Startling Bad Paper Feeding

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this printer 6 months ago and realized the company that made my now 8-year-old HP LaserJet 4p is not the same company that made the HP1700 printer. I ordered the 1700d, which means it had the optional duplexer. When I opened the 1700d box, the duplexer was missing. It took 7 phone calls and 4 weeks to HP Shopping.com to get the part. Evething worked great until I tried to use the front manual feed with the duplexer on. For some reason, after the first sheet has been fed, the remaining sheets on the manual feed tray get "kicked out" about 1/4" and thus the printer would grab the next sheet from the lower tray. So out goes the duplexer until I need it then I put it on then take it off. Next I bought the second tray option and it jamed or feed EVERY sheet slanted. I tried a second one and it did the same. I examined the feeder mechnism on the 2nd tray unit and realized it was totally inadequate for what it was supose to do, so back it went for a refund. Within the past month, the front manual feed has started grabing more than one sheet everytime, so I only load one sheet in the manual slot. NOW, in June 2003, every sheet that goes into the front manual tray gets pulled in slanted, so no more manual feed. Paper has to go in and out of the of the one tray. I guess it is only a matter of time before the entire paper feed mechanism goes out totally. It prints very well, but if you can't get the paper in, what's the use. HP support is of no use ("well, it should work just fine sir")and is very expensive. I am only staying with HP becasue a friend can get me free cartridges from time to time. If not for that, then Epson here I come. If this printer worked as advertised it would be a gem. Unfortunately, it is a lemon.
