Very disappointing

Pros: Prints text well

Cons: Below average photo printing. Has locked up many times.

Review: I was expecting a big improvement over my eight year old Epson. The photo prints are not up to expected standard. I found this out when I had prints made at Target and could make a comparison. Very annoying lockups, which requires cycling the power on and off. The last time I had to remove the cartridges to get the unit to reset.

a real turkey

Pros: sometimes works

Cons: mostly doesn't

Review: Boy, how many times do I have to re-load the driver? This is a VERY slow printer when it prints wireless. But it doesn't print that often, taking a little vacation if you leave it alone for a while. You can get something that prints well from your USB port for a lot less--don't get this thing that will keep you occupied with hp's website, looking to re-install a driver.

Good hardware; bad setup software

Pros: USB setup a no-brainer; good print quality

Cons: Wireless hopelessly complex; incompetent setup wizard

Review: Not opinion - these are facts: 1) Wireless networking setup (Vista) didn't work (after hours of re-installing by an experienced technician; 2) Setup manual and networking manual contain contradictory instructions, outdated & useless information, and just plain wrong statements (check the icon picture for the "Print Report" button). C'mon HP, you can do better than this!

HP tech support agent's Opinion

Pros: not many issues

Cons: ink issues, hard to install wireless

Review: I support this printer for HP tech support(i work for an outsourced call center of course). This printer usually has a lot of good feed back from customers. But there are often issues with the ink. the spring that pushes the ink cartridges up in place are sometimes faulty giving you false out of ink lights. Of course this is covered under the warranty. and the newer 6988 is less likely to have this issue as the 6940 is more likely to have it.

The print heads are built in so if there are issues with that you have to replace the entire printer(which is covered by warranty as well).

its very easy to install unless you are trying to make it wireless and dont know much about computers or simply dont understand wireless settings. And setting it up Adhoc(wireless directly to computer not through a router) is a pain in the butt. I suggest if you want a wireless printer(any wireless printer) you are setting it up through your wireless router.

for a cheaper printer this one is pretty good. just consider an extended warranty on it. Of course some of the spring issues i described causing the ink error lights are a known issue that on some of the older models are still covered even out of warranty. but your printer has to fall in a specific set of serial numbers and has to be having that issue to be replaced.

Nice printer for the money

Pros: Remote Management, Print quality

Cons: Ink Cartridge Cost. Then again, they're all expensive....

Review: Very easy to configure this unit as a wireless printer. Nice web page for monitoring and diagnosing. Works well with my Mac and Windows clients.

It lasted 70 days, then died!

Pros: Not many, just another HP printer.

Cons: Began to malfunction 30 days after purchase.

Review: I paid $99 for this printer brand new! Now I know why. It began it die for no apparent reason. I had to turn off-on or restart the computer. Finally it just died for no reason 70 days after purchase. Very expensive print cartridges (surprise!) Print functions and quality are good, but no better than my 895Cse which lasted 4 years. The printer software caused problems with my Scanjet3970 and I have to access a 'fix folder' to use the scanner. The same company can't make their products work together! If I get another printer it won't be an HP.

Great Value Printer

Pros: Wireless, fast, verygood print quality, very nice photos

Cons: Wirless is slower than USB

Review: A great value hi speed, very good print quality printer for home use or as an auxiliary printer in a small office. Built-in wireless makes setup easy. Out of box to print in minutes

Excellent Printer

Pros: Excellent print quality and speed.

Cons: Lack of memory card support.

Review: Best printer I have owned to date. Excellent print speed and quality. Works great on the network but was tricky to install because the installer kept looping.

Have it connected by ethernet because the product does not have Draft-N wireless support.

Ink cartridges are pricey but worth their weight in gold. HP 96 (Black) cartridge is good for approx. 800 pages which is well worth the money.

Replaced Epson c64 desktop printer.

Set-up is a disaster

Pros: Sure it's a great printer

Cons: ... if you can get it to work

Review: I've now spent over 4 hours in two separate sessions on the phone with HP trying to get this printer to work. Everything connects just fine-- the computer and the printer communicate, etc. Problem is that when it comes printing time, the printer spits out a blank page. Four hours on the phone with HP and the best that they can come up with is that there must be software inferference, that the fault is not theirs so I can't return the printer, and they don't have customer service.
I'm sure the printer is great if you can get it to work, but after my lackluster experience with HP, I'm not about to try again.

This is my third 6980. HP is faithful to replace them as a particular mechanism keeps breaking.

Pros: Prints well. Easy to setup and operate. Software included is very useful.

Cons: The printer has a design flaw in the mechanism that retains the black ink cartridge. The plastic tab that retains a spring device that positions the ink cartridge is fragile and breaks off easily.

Review: Be extremely gentle when replacing/inserting ink cartridges. Except for this annoying design flaw, the printer(s) have been very dependable.

Cons: Small ink catriges

Geat printer for a good price

Pros: Wireless, mac and pc ability

Cons: Paper tray a little plasticy feeling

Review: This printer is surely one of my favorites I have ever had. Even though the paper tray is a little plasticy, the printer more then makes up for that in the quality of its prints and the other features (such as wireless) it has.

Perfect and easy.

Pros: Print Quality, Good looks, Connectivity, Quiet, Good Pricing, Embeded web server options

Cons: Lack of memory card slots, No bundled usb cable, Useless HP software bundle.

Review: I have a windows xp home edition pc, linksys 802.11b router setup with ssid broadcasting disabled, 16-bit wep, and mac adress filtering. Setup was easy to follow in the setup guide.
1. Connect the power cord.
2. Connect to router with bundled ethernet.
3. install cd
4. check router configuration
5. remove ethernet cable when prompted.
I have not tested ad-hoc connectivity.
I found the printer to be equality quiet in "normal mode" and "quiet mode".
I really like the load of options and statistics available in the embeded web server menu. A great netword printer for home or office use.
Currently really cheap at Stalpes.ca with 100$ mail in rebate from hp until 31/01/2007

Disappointed with connectivity

Pros: Nice color and packaging

Cons: Wireless connection never worked

Review: Basically, I never got past the wireless connection setup after 4-5 hours of tech support. I returned the unit. I have a home network with 3 computers and a Linksys wireless router. I currently use an HP computer on one of the computers. This computer acts as a printserver. Based on the price and the reviews on this site I bought this unit direct from HP.

After 3-4 hours with the chat tech support, they realized that the disc supplied did not have the correct drivers. All my computers have XP or XP pro. They supplied drivers for ME and 98! The tech support person said they would send me a disc for free (WOW!) I suggested downloading the drivers and they said they would use generic. I gave up after their suggestions disconnected my laptop from the wireless router. After 4 support techs, I gave up on them. The initial tech sent me a web link which was exactly like the manual.

It may be that this connection would have worked flawlessly had they sent a good software disc, since the "easy secure setup" buttons on my router and printer seems to work fine. It was the software install that gave me problems, along with the arrogant tech support personnel. I am no longer an HP fan.

Good printer, but has a glitch

Pros: Speedy, good print

Cons: Picks up multiple sheets

Review: This printer is very fast, and has good text print on even the fastest setting (fast draft). But the faster it prints, the more it picks up multiple sheets. It will print part of a page on one sheet, then the rest of the page on the next sheet it picks up. Slow it down to "Fast Normal" print, and it will pick up an extra sheet now-and-then. Slow it even more to "Normal" and it will print properly.

Fanning the sheets before printing doesn't seem to help with this glitch.

Otherwise, this is a nice little machine.

Great value-priced printer, packed with high-end features

Pros: Built-in wireless and wired networking, speed, double-capacity cartrage, bluetooth option, Killer looks!

Cons: Buggy software for Macs, wireless didn't work too well for me

Review: I too puchased this for college. As a student, I was in need of a low-priced printer that produced good print quality. The 6980 meets both these standards, and then some. Its speed is outstanding, and its print quality is equal to that of other HP printers that cost hundreds more. Furthermore, its design is suberb. The pictures don't really do it justice. Not only does it have a really nice glossy finish, but it is built solidly. Compared to most of the other HP printers (namely all the lower-end all in 1s, and the office-jet line) the 6980 feels like it was put together solidly, with good-quality materials.

Because I am taking both a laptop and desktop with me, I was in need of a printer with networking support. Currently, my 6980 is plugged into my router, where it then is broadcasted to my wired and wireless computers. So far, this setup has worked great, and set-up was pain-free.

Despite all these good points, I do have two problems which prevent a score of 10. First, my original intent was to use this printer's wireless connection to set up an ad-hoc connection (a direct network connection) between my laptop and printer (a process clearly explained in the manual). However, I was unable to do this as my notebook would refuse to recognise the network that the printer was supposed to create. hmm.

also, for those mac users using an Apple with an intel processer, you may encounter some software bugs. I found that the printer setup utility runs very slow, and crashes every time I open it. I am assuming that because my MacBook must run the conversion software because this program is not written for intel macs. However, I expect that this will be patched in the future.

Even though I ran into a few problems, I'm sure I made the right choice.

Nice speedy little printer with lots of capability at an awesome price.

Pros: wireless, wired, quiet, faster than some laserjets.

Cons: none that I can see

Review: I purchased this printer a couple of weeks ago for college. It does a super job at printing, but I'm mainly excited about it's wireless capability and speed for the price! For me, this was well within my price range at Office Max and it prints faster than some laser jet printers. . .not to mention it's masive interface compatibility; LAN, wireless, USB, and pictbridge printing. You can even spend just a little extra to get the duplexer. Plus, it has a nice sleek modern look.
