"Dont Bother" on by mcfoster
Pros: Prints Pictures good if that's all you want to do with it
Cons: Won't print documents in landscape that has less than a 1 inch margin
Summary: HP has known since November of 2007 that the printer will not print documents in landscape that have less than a 1 inch margin, but won't acknowledge that they have heard this complaint before when you try to get support, and hasn't bothered fixing it.

"simple ,fast and efficient. HP quality is evident on this one." on by maniactechman
Pros: easy to use, quick prinitng, nice design, great price.quick set up to PC.
Cons: ink is always costly but that is true for all inkjets.with the software,i don't like HP's update alerts so i disabled it.
Summary: perfect for basic printing chores. i couldn't be happier with this printer so far. i was able to purchase this at office depot for 46 dollars.i absolutely think it is well worth that. in my opinion this is a quality ink jet printer that prints fast, clearly and looks good.as mentioned as a con, i am not a fan of all the other hp software that is included with the printer/download.basically i disabled everything except the basic printer functions. most notably are the update alerts which are annoying and can crash/interfere with other programs running on my pc. i just check for updates manually. other than that i say buy it with no regrets.

"HP Customer Support is the worst in history" on by rthillusa
Pros: Probably a good printer if it would print color
Cons: HP Customer support is world class BAD _ worst experience I've ever had. I still have a headache 24 hours later.
Summary: This probably is a good printer, but it only prints B&W for me (Vista Home). I bought this printer based on CNET reviews. I told the HP rep where I bought this printer of my previous horrendous experiences with HP support. No problem, he said, just insist on being transfered to level 2 support. Ha! I might have well have asked for an audience with the Pope.
They should rename Customer Support to Clueless Customer Aggravation. What language is it they speak in that country? What scripts are the CSR working from? It was an insanely bad experience.
I will never buy an HP product again if there is any viable alternative. Too bad HP - you used to be such a good company.Updated
Once you get the right drivers loaded, this is not a bad printer, especially for the price. Crisp text, good color rendition, reasonably fast. I am re-rating this printer as an 8. If you are running Vista, skip the CD in the box and go straight to the HP driver update site and save yourself hours of aggravation.
Do not waste your time calling HP customer support in New Delhi. They are worse than useless. I still rate HP customer support as argurably the worst in the industry -
"Aaarrrggghhh!!!" on by nellienobody
Pros: Cheap, fair print quality
Cons: But not good -- problems with install, preferences, margins
Summary: If you are having problems with this printer, don't return it and buy another, *call* HP and scream and yell. Squeeky wheel and all, ya know.
After seeing that Consumer Reports recommended this printer, I bought it between jobs to replace one that was grinding itself to death so I could avoid dropping the big bucks at Kinko's printing out resumes and writing samples. I, too, had problems with it.
It took three attempts to install the drivers. Even when that finally succeeded, no HP folder appeared on my Programs menu, hence no Photosmart or other software. My Printing Preferences mysteriously kept resetting themselves. I also had the margin problems reported here by other users. According to "Printable Region and minimum printing margins" on:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00878142&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=2510771&rule=42253&lang=en
the minimum margins for everything but envelopes, index cards, plain large media, and hagaki (Japanese post cards) are 0.125 all around. You can test this in Word by clicking File > Page Setup, setting the margins to zero, and clicking OK. A message appears advising that one or more margins are set outside the printable area of the page. When you click Fix, for letter size paper in portrait orientation, the bottom margin resets to 0.59. For the same size paper in landscape orientation, the right margin resets to 1.02. For legal size paper in either orientation, the margins reset correctly.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers to no avail. I looked at the installed files and in the Windows Registry to track down anything that might fix this problem. Nada.
It took a month of HP e-mail support run-arounds, a morning of waiting for a call that never happened, and threatening to pitch the bloody thing out the door, never buy an HP product again, and spread my wrath across the Web before it came to the attention of a "senior case manager" actually located in the U.S. of A.
This guy admitted that he'd heard about the margins issue before and that the "engineers" are working on it. Because of the problems this issue caused me, rather than making me wait for a patch, the senior case manager replaced the D4260 with a 6980. This one does set the margins correctly, but I have no idea what other problems it might have as there were no ink cartridges in the non-retail, plain box in which it was sent and I had to call the senior case manager again to request them. He agreed to send them for no cost to me, probably just to get my whiny self off his case.
Supposedly the 6980 printer is a $50 or $60 upgrade. It's wireless-capable and has a gazillion other features I'll never use. I would never have bought it if I'd seen it in a store. I'll be majorly P-O'd if it doesn't do the simple things that I really need it to do. -
"I typically don't spend the time to rate anything but.." on by Cait2500
Pros: It can be fast. It is pretty basic which is all I want (I don't want the scanner, fax etc, all in one deal). Just need to get my notes printed and go!
Cons: Utilizing the fast print setting screws up your documents a lot!
Summary: I don't even know if this product is still for sale, but I needed to vent. This will make me think twice about hp products in the future. There are two things that drive me CRAZY about this printer! When the settings are set to fast draft (which I print all of my school notes in to save ink) the lines don't always line up! The bottom half of lines of text do not line up with the top half! Sometimes this makes certain sentences unreadable, especially if the text is smaller. And this is not a print cartridge alignment issue. It is more like it is printing so fast that the cartridge can't keep its alignment or something. Additionally, the printer sometimes picks up two pieces of paper, but staggered, so that half the document prints on one page, and the other half prints on the other! This is a huge pain when you are printing double sided, and almost your whole document is done then it messes the whole thing up! I have finally had enough and am going to get a new printer today. I can't even deal with it anymore.
