Like fine wines, some printers get better with age. When the HP Photosmart 7550 came out this summer, we gave it solid, but not stellar, marks. Although its output was good, we initially expected more from a photo inkjet at this price. However, the Photosmart 7550 has stood the test of time well, and its print quality with all forms of output--photos, text, and graphics--rivals even the newest generation of photo inkjets at similar prices. Though it still can't quite match the esteemed Canon S900 for overall excellence, particularly on print speeds, the Photosmart 7550 is nevertheless a great choice for grade-A photos and B+ text and graphics...as long as you're not in a hurry.

Technocuddly look.
The HP Photosmart 7550 comes preassembled, so it's out of the box and onto your desk in a matter of seconds. The same goes for unpacking the power cord, power module, ink cartridges, software CD, and some brief printed documentation. The printer's single-page setup guide helps you through this lightweight process in less than five minutes. You simply need to connect the power module, load paper into the 100-sheet paper-input tray, install the print cartridges, connect a USB cable between the printer and PC, and install the appropriate drivers. In other words, you'll be printing in no time.

Outwardly, the 7550 manages to look both cute and space-age. It's built like a brick house, but at 15.2 by 6.5 by 20.2 inches, this compact printer won't hog your desk space. The paper tray is nonretractable, but even that doesn't add many extra inches to this printer's waistline. Rather, this heavy-duty, two-way tray can handle an impressive amount of paper without falling off.

Handy USB port lacks only a cable.

Sturdy, self-enclosed paper tray.

The CD contains drivers for Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP, as well as Mac OS 9.x, X, and 10.1. In addition, you get photo and imaging software for Windows. Although the 7550 fully supports the USB 2.0 interface, HP's package includes no USB cable; it's sold as a $17.99 accessory. That's a frustrating omission, particularly because this printer is USB only. We know that this is becoming a common industry practice, but it's a pain to bring home a new printer and find that you can't connect it to your PC. In fact, it stinks.

Photo ink creates high-resolution images.
This printer takes an interesting approach to ink cartridges. While traditional ink printers use a CMYK cartridge scheme, the 7550 comes with three distinct cartridges: Black, Regular Color, and Photo Color. Notice that there are three print slots in which you insert the black and color cartridges. The photo cartridge, which has nozzles designed for much finer firing, kicks in when you want to print high-resolution images.

You'll need to engage the photo color cartridge only when you're printing a color photo, usually via the Print dialog box. Depending on your printing habits, you may be able to replace some of your ink less often. For example, if you primarily print photos, you'll most likely replace the photo color cartridge more frequently than the others. Fewer cartridge changes equal less cash outflow, although the 7550 negates any savings by using more ink than most other printers--more on this greedy inking in the Performance section.

Supports all major media cards.

LCD for printing sans PC.

In addition to printing images from your PC, the 7550 prints directly from camera media, such as CompactFlash Type I and II, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, Sony Memory Stick, and MultiMedia cards. Plus, the 7550 includes an integrated 1-inch (diagonal) LCD, that lets you preview, zoom, and crop images for printing without accessing software on your PC.

In CNET Labs' official speed tests, the 7550 churned out inkjet text at 3.83 pages per minute (ppm), faster than the Canon S900's 3.64ppm but notably slower than the output of regular inkjets, such as the Canon S530D's 5.9ppm. Printing one 8x10-inch photo took 5.3 minutes--less time than the 6.5 minutes its older cousin HP Photosmart 1215 needed but far slower than the Canon S900's 1.7 minutes per page.

For a photo inkjet, however, middle-of-the-road speeds are far less important than its output quality, and the 7550's output practically cancelled out its mediocre print speeds in comparison to those of fellow photo printers. The 7550 generated photographic prints nearly on a par with those of the Canon S900. Although the 7550's picture was a little dark, it looked sharp and detailed. The colors, particularly skin tones, appeared accurate, smooth, and well blended.

The inks will cost you.
Clearly, photo quality is the most important test of a photo printer's skill. But expensive inkjets of any variety should be able to produce acceptable text and graphics. The 7550's text output appeared sharp on both plain and coated papers, though fine detail tended to disappear at smaller font sizes. Plain-paper graphics looked great on the surface, but closer inspection revealed a few pixelation problems. For example, we could see the pixels used to render a metallic image. To compare, the Canon S900 (one of our highest-performing inkjets overall), was much better at connecting the dots; its graphical objects appeared so well formed and smooth that we had to use a jeweler's loupe to see the dots. Fortunately, the 7550's pixel problem isn't noticeable enough to cause alarm. In fact, compared to the text and graphics output of photo printers we've reviewed recently, such as the Epson Stylus Photo 925, the HP's printouts looks positively stellar.

On the downside, the $399.99 7550 may end up costing you a bit more than similar printers, thanks to its prodigious ink consumption. The $30 color cartridge ate up about 54 cents per page in ink in our tests. By comparison, the Canon S900 uses only 38 cents per page, and other printers use even less. Black ink costs for the 7550 fared a bit better; the $18 black cartridge costs about 4.6 cents per page, comparable to the competition's costs.

You won't have to shell out for tech support. HP offers free Web support, complete with FAQs, troubleshooting guidance, setup and installation assistance, software and driver updates, and online manuals. You also get a standard one-year limited warranty. For an extra $69.99, you can extend the coverage with a three-year, next-day-exchange plan. The warranty includes free telephone support, though it's a toll call in the United States.

As in the past, we had a positive experience with our test call to HP's tech-support line. After listening to a short automated phone menu, we waited mere minutes before being transferred to a live person. The friendly service rep doled out some excellent advice and didn't get frustrated with our ignorance.

HP Rocks the Plain Paper

Pros: Plain Paper Champion by a longshot. HP inkjets print bold contrast and bright color on just about anything.

Cons: HP ink smears easily and fades over time, and is not waterfast. Close examination shows details are lost in artwork or photography. HP's are definitely excellent "first glance" printers.

Review: I've had this thing forever and I still love it. I have an Epson R800 for printing photos and art prints, and the HP is for printing on uncoated paper stocks. If you can afford two printers this is the way to go. Even older refurb HP inkjets produce amazing results on the first print. The difference is in the details. The boldness of HP printers does diminish the finer points. This is not an art printer or a professional photographer's tool. The HP colors always pop and the black is JET black even if you print on a paper grocery bag.. Epson prints by comparison look washed out on plain paper, but they can tear up some coated stock. Epson for photography, artwork and color proofing, HP for everything else.

Got it free....but would have paid for it!!!

Pros: Great printer. Yes....got it free. Had an Epson for about a year. Constant problems with it. Was looking for a new one to purchase...when a family member who won the HP gave it to me. Now they are regretting it! They are bringing me their sticks to print

HP 7550 printer works good!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought my HP 7550 after Christmas and have had really good photos. The quality it produces is great! I had the PhotoSmart P1000 HP printer before this one, and the 7550 prints better then the other one i had.

Beware of minimum system requirements

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The box says "500 MB Free Hard Disk space required". What it should say is "500 MB Free Hard Disk space required -- ON YOUR BOOT DRIVE". My system has 60 GB free space, but only 150 MB on my C drive. The software would not install, and would not give me an option to pick the installation drive. HP tech support said the software was designed to be installed on the boot drive (C drive), and suggested I "Reformat my hard drive". I did one better -- I returned the thing to the store, and will now buy a Canon or Epson. I wasted several hours because of HP's poor software design. Never Again.

Cons:

Review: Using this printer I am able to duplicate results as good as with professional, conventional photo processing labs.

Sweeeeeeeeeet!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Best all around prints for the value! I have only one negative comment and that is the Ink Compartment Door is a little on the flimsy side. Positives = Long lasting photos. The best phot i have seen come out of an inkjet printer. Dedicated 4x6 paper tray. Very east to clear paper jams if they occur.

THIS PRINTER IS AWESOME

Pros:

Cons:

Review: THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN. IT PRINTS LIFE-LIKE PHOTOS. TO THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT GET GOOD PRINTS FROM THIS PRINTER, TRY LOOKING AT YOUR CAMERA. IT MAY BE A GOOD CAMERA BUT HAVE YOU CONSIDERED TO LOOK IF YOUR CAMERA IS DEFECTIVE? THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME. I BOUGHT AN EXPENSIVE OLYMPUS 4 MG CAMERA AND I WAS GETTING YELLOWISH PRINTS. I EXCHANGED THE CAMERA FOR A NIKON 3.2 MG AND THE PRINTS ARE SUPERB. WE FOUND OUT THAT THE FIRST CAMERA WAS DEFECTIVE. THIS IS THE PRINTER TO GO.

High End Printer - Worth the $

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Last printer I had was a Deskjet 722C that lasted me 3+years, a real workhorse. Most of the printing we do now is Photo, so we wanted to upgrade and spend $ on a printer though twould last us at least 3 years and be close to the top of the heap throughout that time. I was torn on Canon vs. HP, but Im a big fan of front loading the paper as well as having a printer that can directly take my Sony Mempory Sticks. We went with this one and like it so far in the past 24 hours. The 4X6s look GREAT, amazing better than developed IMO.
