"It does work with a macintosh" on by pletzke
Pros: Very pleased with printed cd result
Cons: hp did leave out product to use with macs
Summary: I purchased the printer to use for printing cd & dvd products. It is true that hp did not provide the printing software for the mac in the box. I made the call to hp support and talked with the mac support staff. Was tolda that hp did not do it right and that I had to download software for the D5160 which had the templates for the cd&dvds. I did this and using the hp photosmart create found the cd templates, loaded my images and information on the template and printed. It worked and the result was excellent and it printed very quickly. It is an excellent printer for my needs. But it is not a plug and play. It requires some thought before tinkering.

"Only used once before breaking" on by goshkruse
Pros: It fit into a trash bag.
Cons: Broke after one using.
Summary: I managed to print on one CD. So it does print on CDs using a Mac, but unfortunately you'll need to but a printer for every CD you wish to print on. It just kept cycling through it's startup procedure and wouldn't stop. This is the most painful printer I have ever used on any level - nothing about it is intuitive. I generally like HP printers, but this is a cheaply made sophisticated piece of junk.

"PhotoDumb is better descriptor" on by lenora lee
Pros: Has HP Name
Cons: Too many false statements
Summary: I used HP Printers for years and loved them. I brought my newest home, and from the start it failed. It told me I had a paper jam. No, it had never sucked up any paper. It told me a door was open, there were no open doors. It told me I was out of ink (brand new cartridge). No matter what I did, it refused to work. It is now back in its box, waiting for the return trip to the store. I never did get a print out of it. HP quality seems to have taken a long, steep dive.

"Won't print CDs on a Macintosh" on by Jim Canestrari
Pros: Cheaper ink
Cons: HP still doesn't support the Apple platform
Summary: This printer is advertised as operable from a Mac. I bought the thing mainly to print directly on top of printable CD-R media, which is one of the claims on the box. Once installed, you discover that HP provides a third-party application for the CD-R printing that turns on automatically when you open the port for the CD tray. Guess what - it's only available in Windows. Nice.
After several calls to HP, what I was told to do was download another set of files for a different unit, but that it would "provide templates" to work on the Mac. Didn't work, and just dumped a bunch of additional stuff on my system I get to clean off now.
This is the second time I've been burned by HP for not providing the essential software for their products to run off a Mac. They should quit advertising that they do. -
"Good printer bad crapware" on by andy51edge
Pros: Good printer auto duplexer, reads SD cards and you can access them from the printer on your PC. I Love the CD label printer with the ability to print to full sized disks and 80mm disks
Cons: printers kinda loud, DVD labler has a few glitches, but i cant say enough about the crapware that comes with the printer it is constantly bugging you to do this and that, and because i use it at school i cant unstal or disable it.
Summary: Great printer, fast, kinda loud, but the crapware that comes with it stinks!
