"Yahoo IM 7 has set the bar very high! Superb"
on by efwhitePros Loaded with features that make IM'ing and communicating a joy, if not an addiction.
Cons Hard to think of any; they could have added a way to create your own emoticons, as with MSN Messenger.
Summary The new features dazzle and thrill. To voice with a contact, you make a 'call.' The length of the conversation is displayed as you speak. I had a clear conversation with a contact in Taiwan (I'm in Calif, on a dial-up connection at that!)If your contact does not answer or is offline, you can leave a recorded message up to 2 minutes long. When you log on, a symbol at the bottom of the main window indicates if any contact has left a voice message for you. Quality of the recorded messages is very good. In the same window, one can view your complete call history, both incoming and outgoing, to/from whom and when. You can delete any messages you wish, or just leave them for repeated playing. When a contact attempts to call you, a .wav file plays, sounding just like a real phone. You can import more 'ringing' files or create your own sounds; best yet, you can assign a unique ring to each of your contacts, so if you are in another room and hear a ring, you can identify the caller then and there. Marvelous! The new file-sending system is outstanding; just drag a file such as a .jpg into the chat window and sending commences; a preview of the pic appears, as in MSN Messenger, with a progress bar. To share photos, selecting the appropriate tab opens a nice window, into which you can drag a photo, or browse to the file as with the old way. Your contact can then show you his/her pic, and if you like, you can make this photo your display pic with 2 clicks. You want to point out a particular face in your family photo? You can tell Yahoo to make a pointer appear, and move it to point out your Aunt Harriet; your contact will see the same pointer move on his/her Photo window! One other nice addition is when you hover your mouse cursor over your contact, a panel appears with lots of contact info, including your current stealth setting set for that particular contact; if this contact is online, his/her display pic appears in large-thumbnail format. So, Yahoo has many new features, and has raised the bar for IM's.
