"Crashed after 1 mo"
onSummary Bought one, it was great EXTREMELY fast, but after awhile it started beeping, and then one day, I got a BSOD in XP, and then rebooted, and according to POST, there was no Primary Master Hard drive, IE, the drive died for no apparent reason, so now IBMs replacement is beginning to beep at me alot. So now I have to replace that too.... Spped is excellent, space is great, reliability sucks. Ill take a slower, smaller drive that is dependable over this thing

"depending on OS ?"
onSummary I have bought this HDD a month ago and it works without any single problems. I am using a Mac and I wonder how many of negative comments come from Windows OS users.

"IBM Drivers are POO! WD rules!"
onSummary Get a Western Digital Drive, dont waste your time with IBM, 80% of their drives are defective.
-
"noisy after one month"
onSummary 120 gig deskstar...(deathstar)very noisy after only one month of serious server usage.
-
"I'll Never purchase another IBM harddrive"
onSummary I have baught three 40gb harddrives and the first two did not work upon installation and the third one failed 6 mos later with no warning.I have used the dft and the results came with a error code 070-defective device tech result code 70004707

"120GXP Dies just like the others"
onSummary Make no mistake, IBM didn't fix anything even on their newer high capacity drives. MiMy 120GB is dying a slow death after 3 months... It clicks, seeks, and then spins down every hour or so and won't spin back up. Their refurb policy stinks too - They just rebuild & reformat the drives, but they still have the same problems and it will fail again shortly!! What good is a drive knowing it will fail any day?
-
"Bad support, fails often"
onSummary IBM has become worse than Maxtor. At least maxtor ships a replacement within 3 days when the drive fails. In case of IBM you will need to wait for months and have your own packaging to ship. IBM needs a class action lawsuit for their "deathstart" drives.

"IBM Rocks all EIDE Drives"
onSummary Compared drives with western digital, seagate, maxtor, Fujitsu. IBM was quiter, faster and has yet to fail for me.
-
"Well they just don't work!"
onSummary I have to work with about 5 of these around the office, and one at home.... What can I say... Click of death. And yes, there is always plenty of room above the breather hole. Most of the drives have been in twice for warranty replacement. It's at the point now, that when the next one goes (again), It's going straight in the bin...

"DO NOT EVER BUY A IBM DESKSTAR - THEY FAIL."
onSummary Failure rate is TOO HIGH!! ALL DEATHSTARS are not worth the trouble. I purchased an 80 gig 60GXP four months ago and it just failed. I lost 6 months of video work. I know I'm suppose to back up my work... but ***? I just purchased the computer and HD. DO NOT BUY ANY DESKSTAR because they fail. You may want to go and see what you have to do to "retrieve" your data: http://www.ibm.com/harddrive/ Buy a Seagate, WD, or Maxtor. If you currently have a Deathstar - back it up then go get a new hard drive, finally through the Deskstar in the trash - DO NOT SELL IT ON EBAY!!!!! Sincerely Sam

"Whoaaa"
onSummary My 120GXP 80GB lasted 2 days and then came this really bad sound from it. Scratching and little noises. Well I think this was my last IBM´s hard-drive. Thank you
-
"Awesome drive, but it sucks when you lose 100 GB of data"
onSummary I had this drive for 14 months and it worked great. Then I go to turn my computer on in the morning and what do I get? SMART failure, and running DFT gives me a defective device error. Hmmmm, thats great. I guess I lose all 100 GB of data I had stored on the drive. The IBM people were nice enough to replace it no problem, but do I really want it?

"No Way, Hosed ey?"
onSummary I don't know what I was thinking when I started looking at a HDD upgrade this time and considered another deathstar. I should have learned my lesson after the first time of buying a 40Gb model deathstar. You guessed it, the scratch of death. I returned the drive to the small shop I usually buy my parts from in town. They sent the drive off to IBM for replacement. Gee, what do ya think happened? Exactly what you thought... nothing (after 2 months... no drive). The shop was good enough to replace the drive with a new upgraded version of the deathstar 80Gb'er. I still have the drive (x my fingers)... and it still works after a year :o) OK, you thought I was done with my story, right? Not so. I was at work one day, a couple of months after getting my brand spanking new IBM desktop computer, with a 40 Gb... you guessed it, deathstar drive inside :o( Gee what do you think I'm gonna say now? Yep, that drive failed too. Same clunking scratching noises. Thank god I was able to move my data to the lan before the drive finally locked up forever. Do yourselves a favor folks... don't ever, ever, ever buy a deathstar drive. You will be very disappointed. This time it's a 100GB 7200RPM Ultra/100 WD1000BB. IBM again? I say "No Way, Hosed ey"?

"IBM drive for an IBM nut!!"
onSummary I'm an IBM nut! I've been a fan of IBM gear for years. My favorite keyboard is one of the original PS/2 mech boards. It's several years old and still has it's signature LOUD click. I built a new Athlon 1.4g PC last year(on Sep 11th to be exact) and I bought a 60G model 75 drive. I know most people have ahd problems with this drive. I've not. It's a little slow coming back from sleep mode, but I'm not bothered by that. It's been running 24/7 for over a year now. I was so impressed by the drive's performance, I bought the 80G 120GXP here, and transferred all of my data over to it, making it my primary drive. The 60g is now my MP3/Video drive. It's at 2/3 capacity, and running great. Both drives run 24/7 on my PC. The drives are arranged in my Cheiftec Silver Dragon so that there's space in between, in a fan cooled bay. I shut down the PC for some upgrades last week, and checked the temp of the drives. After running for several weeks without a shutdown, they were cool to the touch. I'd advise anybody to keep their drives fan cooled!!! I'm going to be adding a heat sink to them for added cooling performance. I'm a fan of Seagate, IBM and Maxtor drives. None have ever given me any problems. Whereas, WD have always failed on me within 6 months of 24/7 operation. Any of my friends who have goine against my advice and bought them have had them fail within 6 to 8 months. Who needs 8MB of cache when the drive dies? BUY IBM!!!! BUY IBM!!! BUY IBM!!!

"Fast, Cool, Quiet, Reliable"
onSummary Who could ask for anything more? I am experiencing the most reliable and fast drive that I've ever owned in the 120GXP. Owned it for months and no problems whatsoever. Thank you IBM.

"It works great"
onSummary I run this drive in all the machines in our office including the one I compile programs on 8-10 hours a day and there isn't even the slightest sign of bad sectors or loud noises. In fact, on the subject of noise, you can not even hear this drive. Since I also play IT tech for our firm, I can say that things I have read about the breather hole are true. Leave room for this drive to breath or it will suffer the same consequences that you would if your breath holes were blocked off. This is not asking for much in a drive that when installed properly runs this fast and for very long periods of time and I'm quite impressed with the 24/7 performance in our server.

"Huge, fast, good value."
onSummary Easy as pie install, quiet, fast, huge - there is nothing bad to say about this drive. No weekend support? Who needs weekend support to install a hard drive?
-
"HELP ME PLEEEEAASSEEE!!!"
onSummary i just bought it and installed it. the BIOS recognises it, everything fine. BUT WINDOWS DOESN'T!!! i really don't know why and neither one of my friends does. so can someone please help me or tell me a place where i can get help ? thanx a lot

"Two of those running perfectly.."
onSummary I've got 2 60Gb 120GXPs (OEM), running no problem at all, lot faster than 60GXPs and 75GXPs.... reliability?, well, I've had a Maxtor and a Quantum fail in this months.
