Pros FAST. Even when saturated with I/O traffic for hours on end, these things keep chugging away. Barracuda & 32mb buffer; kind of says it all..
Cons Noisy. Mine has always made a weird seek/re-seek sort of sound, but hasn't failed me yet. Worked like this from day one, so I have no complaints. Checked SMART drive stats to be sure, and it's all a-ok.
Summary People reported there were issue's with certain models of this drive, and I checked into this as I integrated it into my system. I had a newer rev in their internal bios, than the problem models, so I had no issues. I plugged into a cheapie PCIe card I got for $15. I get same input and output rates as the older 500gb model I have, from the Barracuda family. I'm sold. These are great.
Pros It comes in a pretty box.
Cons It fails and corrupts the data. The manufacturer's recovery software, for both windows and DOS, crashes. The web site offers no assistance and the "chat" technicians hang up on you.
Summary Bought two drives, one in July 08 and the second in Dec 08. Bought the second because the first had a corrupted boot sector, and now the second has the same issue less than a month after I purchased it. Tech support is shrugging their shoulders (after a 45 minute wait to speak with someone and another two hours on the phone) and Seagate's engineers deny that their software is broken even though it's a known issue on their web site forum for over a year and a half. I have now spent over two weeks of man hours trying to restore all of my data, because now the newly-minted drive is broken as well. I'm sticking with Western Digital's black series.
DO NOT BUY SEAGATE PRODUCTS! CAVEAT EMPTOR!
"High Failure rate"on by DNA3e8
Pros Big. 1.5 TB is a nice size
Cons 1st one failed in a few weeks the replacement failed in a few dayes
Summary DON"T Get IT
Pros Considering the huge size of this hard drive, it appears to be a good buy. Also, it's very quiet when in operation.
Cons it's very unreliable, it accumulated 11 bad sections in one weeks time and is heading for failure. It was then RMA back to the retailer for a refund.
Summary Because of these problems, I would stay clear of any 11th series Seagate hard drives. This hard drive has the latest firmware.
Pros I thought it was good value
Cons Failed after 7 months and Seagate knew it had a high failure rate and still flooded the market. Evidence is here "http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1050374/seagate-barracudas-7200-11-failing" and all over their internal user bulletin boards.
Summary I'll stick to Western Digital from now on!
