Pros faster boots and app loads
Cons Terrible pauses during video playback - google it. YOU WILL REGRET BUYING THE MOMENTUS XT DRIVE.
Summary After trying really hard to find a use for this drive, it's now being relegated as backup space. Nice idea but in real world usage, media playback must be smooth - I should have looked beyond the benchmarks. Too late now, I'm past the 7 day return from my local Canada Computer store. Hopefully this post of my experience with this drive will save others from wasting their money and time. Seriously google is your friend - if only I had looked for problems with the Momentus XT instead of benchmarks...
Pros I give them half a star for the idea
Cons The thing doesn't work. The upshot is some people are lucky and others are not. I am onto firmware SD28 but it just won't work reliably with a Mac. It might be good for Windows but I am actually quite upset that yet another company lets the users do the t
Summary The poor man pays twice. Buy an SSD and get it done and over with.
Pros How can I say this politely, well there aren't any pros.
Cons Boot up times not increased
More spinning "pinwheels of death"
More BSODs on my windows VM.
Computer won't go to sleep or well at random times wake from sleep even with the lid closed.
Little support from manufacturer.
Summary I have tried (key word is tried) to use this drive in my work MacBook Pro for about 6 months now. It has been the biggest bag of hurt I have ever seen.
Look at the Seagate support forums before even thinking of buying this drive (and before commenting on this comment).
Video playback is choppy
Spinning beach ball for no apparent reason
Fails to wake from sleep
Will wake from sleep at various times for no apparent reason.
In a Windows machine I would get random BSODs
After upgrading the firmware three times, Seagate still won't admit there is a serious problem with this particular model. They push firmware updates up, no change they ask us to fill in spread sheets, no change.
Seagate needs to man up and recall these drives and stop using its customers for Beta Testers (with out the customers knowledge).
Pros When it DID work, it cut boot times by about half and general day-to-day( non-video )use was very snappy. The laptop woke from sleep almost instantly and was a joy to use. Probably what it would have been like with the SSD I SHOULD have bought...
Cons - won't wake from sleep mode due to defective APM firmware; updates don't fix this
- for twice the price I could have had a low-end SSD without all these problems!
Summary ---> as admin.dns mentions here, just Google 'Momentus XT problems' and get an eyeful of them all !
Bought drive in Nov 2010, started having issues with my Gateway 6864 FX not waking from sleep mode in Win7-64bit after 2 weeks. As it was past the 30 day NCIX return limit, I finally dealt with Seagate for a warranty exchange. Replacement drive worked fine for a week, then did EXACT same thing... only NOW my laptop refuses to boot or save my BIOS settings. CMOS clearing, different SATA drives and tech support visits to no effect; I now have a dead drive AND a dead laptop. Thanks for nothing, Seagate... not to mention the 60+ hours I've spent scouring forums, calling tech support and swapping drives to no effect.
Bottom line: DO NOT BUY this hybrid drive unless you are prepared for the consequences. Cutting-edge tech sometimes means you bleed, as is my case. I'm out $$ for the drive, and $$ for my was-perfectly-fine laptop that's now a brick.
Pros - 7200 RPM
- fast at times, but that's rare
Cons Choppy video playback. Every one in four hdparm -T benchmarks yields 1 MB/s performance. This is simply premature and untested technology.
