Pros green huge capacity along with fast reliable and secure data keeping
lots of features
Cons shipping never ship UPS only fed ex UPS drops their products do the math you will get a dead hard drive- Proven Fact
Summary Excellent drive for moderate speed demands, higher capacity, and low power. I have not had one fail, but apparently some have been shipping DoA. Failure rate is much lower than Seagate Barracuda LP drives.
People should read the specs before they buy. The description says: "The IntelliPower delivers a fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms; IntelliSeek Calculates optimum seek speeds; and IntelliPark automatically unloads the heads during idle." If you expect the drive to run at 7200 or more all the time, this should have been a clue that it probably won't.
This is my second 1TB drive in a year and they run great. My wife dropped our first one on the hard floor from about 3' and it bend the corner of the top plate a little - I decided to get a second drive to clone it before it died; and it has been running strong for over a month since the accident.
- I recommend the WD Green and Black drives to everyone who asks.
- I am running both in Thermaltake ST0009U enclosures and transfer speeds & temps are good.
- Temperature is pretty warm to the touch when I ran them open air - but not scorching, (I access them all day long.)
Pros Long Lasting, had it 3 years (bought as a refurbished drive for dirt cheap)
tested it last week, using speedfan, 34c to 37c, in an ambient of 25c to 30c+, and for its age 94% fitness, 96% performance still!
Cons can be a little noisy at certain times, but my air cooler for my oc'd AMD PII X2 560 is louder anyway! no toher negatives
Summary nowadays it may be sub par compared to all these Sata3 HDD/SSD/SSHD's out there, but i think it will continue on for years to come, will be keeping it as an odds n ends storage drive, it has been my OS drive through 2 computers, never thought of upgrading cause of it hasn't failed yet!
"Disappointing"on by BobMVD
Pros Great storage. warranty process quick and simple
Cons Not very reliable
Summary I bought one soon after these came out. It failed within warranty and was easily replaced. Replacement failed again within warranty and was replaced. The third one has now made it two years, is out of warranty, and failed like the previous units. I cannot consider buying another given the track record of this drive. Originally I used this as a backup drive for several devices, but changed my mind after the first one failed. Started using it to "backup my backup" and it is a good thing I had another backup process in place.
Pros None - any advantages are outweighed by the failure rate.
Cons We purchased four of these drives in July 2010 for use in a medium duty postgresql server. By the end of 2010, less than six months, two have failed. Pulled the other two out of service - don't trust them.
Summary Can't get past the failure rate. Any features, cost, etc. doesn't matter much if you can't trust them. We have a lot of WD drives, some nearly a decade old, and maybe we got a bad batch, but this series is a big disappointment.
