Western Digital Caviar WD600AB user reviews (60GB; Ultra ATA/100)

Summary Well, for the guy that has a drive that won't hold a partition. Run the diagnostics and then submit for a RMA. The drive has a date of manufacture on it; I did it for the only WD drive that ever died (heat, I think) 2 years ago on a 3 year old drive. No receipt-threw it away 3 years earlier. So far, I've had a 120M,540M,850M,1.6G,2x5.1G, 8.4G,6.4G,20G,40Gx3 (in a raid), and one of these 60G. Plenty have been retired or given away, but only 1 died.All have worked better than expected. I've also owned a seagate (OK) and a Maxtor (Performance for a new model was less than that of a two year older WD) I realize that there may be better drives out there (not a maxtor) but WDs been reliable..

Summary Installation was a snap, floppy utilities were great, easy to follow and make a great backup program to copy a partition to another, zip it and store it, one of the quietest hard drives when it is writing and reading that i've had, speed is good but seems ez bios that is needed to run on my board boogs the system some, but it's not too taxing, gave support a 5 did'nt need it that's a BIG PLUS

Summary After 4 months of use, the drive started making a clicking noise and failed to boot. Still awaiting replacement drive from WD.

Summary Installed 3 of these in our machines, and 2 Maxtor 40's. Had crashes and freeze-ups that never occurred on these machines. After 2 months, cluster and file-size anomalies, and slowdowns. Then 2 drives died on the spot (all data unrecoverable). Replaced all 5 Maxtors with Western Digital, all problems vanished. No more Maxtors in our shop, please. We're back to WD drives. WD ain't perfect, but they're better than these, and good support.
