"Don't expect to get the rebate"
onSummary Don't expect to get the rebate especially if you buy online. I bought this drive expecting a $30 rebate (otherwise it would have been too expensive). I was in a rush to fix my hardware, so I didn't bother looking for a rebate form. I planned on downloading it from WD's site. You can't get it on line. If you buy online, don't expect to get the rebate form in time to send it in. I now will have to drive 40min one way just to get the rebate form. If Compusa didn't charge a 15% restocking fee, I would return the drive and buy one online for less money. This review is not about the drive, but the lousy tactics of WD.

"Terrible drive to buy."
onSummary I bought ONE of these wd600AB's a while back, it's been rma'd with the same model THREE TIMES. The only thing I will use it for now is to record TV shows when I'm not at home. (Who cares if I lose them, right? :P) The WD600BB is no better. I've had just as many problems with the 600BB as I have with the 600AB. The only difference is, I was able to sell (e-bay) the 600BB's and get my money back. Don't worry, I only sold new ones that came back from Western Digital. PS: I have heard from a mole inside WD that they have been having production/quality control problems.

"Hard Disk Died after 6 months"
onSummary The same clicking noise many of these guys are talking about and then after a few days, complete death. Had a lot of important data in that drive that I am never going to get back.
The customer support was quick to provide me a RMA number and I believe they have shipped the replacement drive too (THE EXACT SAME MODEL). I am not too keen on saving my important files on a WD again -
"piece of ****! !@#$@$@$"
onSummary piece of ****! died (clicking noise, will not be detected anymore) after 5 months of normal use. lost all my data. it was a retail box. jesus! i lost some important data. !$#$@%@#$#@$!@#*#$@$%@#

"I'll Never Buy Western Digital Again."
onSummary Installed it as a second drive in my system, the first being an IBM that I have had no problems with. The drive could not be recognized by Win 2000, nor any of the diagnostic utilities provided by WD and after 2 weeks of talking with their customer service department every day, they finally decided to tell me that WD hard drives don't work with VIA chipsets. Why they didn't tell me this earlier, I'll never know, but I will never buy WD again.

"Wow what speed"
onSummary I was shocked at the increase in performance over my old WD 8.4gb uata66 drives. I used the WD utility to set this WD600AB at 66mbps down from its default 100mbps and it has run without hiccup for 45 days. 12 years ago I stacked 8 ea 540mb scsi drives in each NEC server at $1900 apiece and replaced them by the dozen after a couple years. I've had few failures on eide drives and their MTBF incredibly seems to be improving. I give my old drives away when i can buy a new one 4x its size for under a $hundred. This one was $101.

"Bull$#!^"
onSummary Well, for the guy that has a drive that won't hold a partition. Run the diagnostics and then submit for a RMA. The drive has a date of manufacture on it; I did it for the only WD drive that ever died (heat, I think) 2 years ago on a 3 year old drive. No receipt-threw it away 3 years earlier. So far, I've had a 120M,540M,850M,1.6G,2x5.1G, 8.4G,6.4G,20G,40Gx3 (in a raid), and one of these 60G. Plenty have been retired or given away, but only 1 died. All have worked better than expected. I've also owned a seagate (OK) and a Maxtor (Performance for a new model was less than that of a two year older WD) I realize that there may be better drives out there (not a maxtor) but WDs been reliable..

"WHAT A DEAL"
onSummary Installation was a snap, floppy utilities were great, easy to follow and make a great backup program to copy a partition to another, zip it and store it, one of the quietest hard drives when it is writing and reading that i've had, speed is good but seems ez bios that is needed to run on my board boogs the system some, but it's not too taxing, gave support a 5 did'nt need it that's a BIG PLUS

"died within 5 months"
onSummary After 4 months of use, the drive started making a clicking noise and failed to boot. Still awaiting replacement drive from WD.
-
"Average Maxtor, with the usual bugs"
onSummary Installed 3 of these in our machines, and 2 Maxtor 40's. Had crashes and freeze-ups that never occurred on these machines. After 2 months, cluster and file-size anomalies, and slowdowns. Then 2 drives died on the spot (all data unrecoverable). Replaced all 5 Maxtors with Western Digital, all problems vanished. No more Maxtors in our shop, please. We're back to WD drives. WD ain't perfect, but they're better than these, and good support.

"An unreliable drive is never a bargain"
onSummary I have witnessed scores of installations with simultaneous installs including WesternDigital, IBM, Quantum, Maxtor and Seagate drives. The WD Caviars consistently fail (bad sectors, dead drive with "clicking" noise) before the rest. Quantums and Maxtors deteriorate more gracefully. Seagates arew unexciting but unproblematic, and IBMs have been both fast and reliable. Spend the extra $20, and get a Maxtor or IBM, and some piece of mind.

"10min Ups and Running WinXP"
onSummary Installed, running on a AMD 1.8mhz system. Additonally created a RedHat 7.2 fx2 partition. Had XP and RH running in less than an hour. Nice Drive..!!

"5400 Rpm is too slow for heavy usage"
onSummary 5400 Rpm is too slow for everyday heavy usage. Maxtor 7200 RPM 100 gig is much better value

"You Idiots"
onSummary For the one who said it won't hold a partition "You're an idiot" It's obviously a wrong-doing on your part. Don't rate something bad just because of your ignorance.
-
"A lot of storage"
onSummary This hard drive has a good 60 gigs. I am a storage freak so I have to have. But Maxtor HDDS are still the best hard drives for storage. Offering 100 gigs of storage.
-
"Great Support"
onSummary I recently bought this drive, and had some problems getting the drive installed. I called tech support and within 10 minutes the drive was setup and I was installing Windows. All I can say is great support.

"Great Drive"
onSummary This drive was great. Used it in building my own system. Easy to install and quiet as ever with Tremendous capacity. Western Digital is the way to go.

"Simple & big. Great upgrade for iMacs!"
onSummary I picked up this baby for $150 after employee discount at Best Buy and replaced my the old 6GB internal drive in my early iMac with it. It's like a whole new computer... Excellent capacity and speed, no problems. Highly recommend, esp. at such a fantastic price!

"Best drive that I seen until now"
onSummary I bought this drive as my second drive. It was easy to install with the floppy that it brings. I have all my games and Mp3s install in it. The only minor thing that I didn't like is when formated I lost 5 gigs. The other drive that I have which is a Maxtor 13.6 gig lost only one gig when formated. Over all the Western Digital is a good drive.

"easy to install"
onSummary My old bios (1997) does not directly support such a big drive. The disk comes with a floppy disk full of utilities that allow the disk to be seen by Win95. Also, as part of the setup, you can transfer all your files from your old drive this this new drive in about 30 minutes. Just swap the master/slave setting, and you are good to go.
