Ad-aware SE 1.06 is the latest version of Lavasoft's popular and venerable antispyware program, and not surprisingly, it continues to meet the high standards that Ad-aware is known for. Long considered the grandfather of antispyware programs, Ad-aware keeps getting better. Of all the antispyware software tested by Download.com, Ad-aware SE finished in the top three, removing virtually everything we threw at it, and it finished number one in overall performance. Ad-aware SE is available in two versions. Ad-aware SE Personal is free and will quarantine and remove spyware on your PC. Ad-aware SE Plus sells for $29.95 and includes real-time protection, automatic updates, and advertising block--features that are disabled within the free edition. Either edition of Ad-aware should be a must-have for every PC desktop.

This latest version of Ad-aware SE runs faster than previous versions, and it finds and deletes even more illicit programs that track your surfing and cause many of those annoying pop-up ads. With its light use of resources and thorough scans, Ad-aware also beats paid antispyware programs, such as McAfee AntiSpyware. In addition to providing a more robust scanning engine, Ad-aware now sports a sleek new interface that makes the program more attractive and extremely simple to use. Ad-aware's custom skins let you change the look and feel of the app in a variety of ways.

Downloading and installing Ad-aware SE Personal took only a few minutes. It's best to run a full system scan the first time you use Ad-aware. After that, it's much faster to use the Smart Scan option, which checks only files that have recently changed on your hard drive. Both the free and paid versions of Ad-aware are highly configurable, with more options and choices than you'd expect. The default settings work great with most systems, though, and unless you have an unusual situation, you shouldn't have to fiddle with any settings.

If you've been using your PC on the Internet without any spyware protection, you'll probably be amazed at how many offending programs Ad-aware finds. Unfortunately, the process of removing offending apps with Ad-aware can be confusing at times because Ad-aware doesn't provide much helpful information about the suspect spyware it marks for quarantine. For example, it doesn't identify which applications might need a suspected spyware/adware component in order to run. But don't worry, Ad-aware doesn't entirely remove the spyware, just quarantines it in a secure folder, so if for some reason you actually needed one of those adware components, you could easily reinstall it later within Ad-aware.

In testing performed by CNET Download.com, Ad-aware SE Plus performed one of the fastest full-system scans, clocking in at mere 11 minutes, 30 seconds. It was also one of the most accurate, with Ad-aware identifying the biggest threats in our test group. Ad-aware also picked up one item that appeared to be a false positive not detected by any of the other programs in our tests. In the end, Ad-aware SE Plus left only a couple of fairly harmless spyware elements on our test machine.

Our only gripe is with regard to Lavasoft's paltry support options--both free and paid. E-mail technical support is not available for the free version, of course, but the online support area on Lavasoft's Web site is also underwhelming to say the least. That said, the program is pretty easy to use and the integrated help system is complete and should be able to answer most questions.

Sounds good but can't find it

Pros: Sounds good from the reviews

Cons: Can't find anywhere to download it

Review: I have been happy using Ad-Aware 2007 but do find it to be slow. The SE is supposed to be better but I can't find it anywhere. Cnet says it's not available.
Any suggestions?

Slooow but decent

Pros: Seems to get the job done

Cons: It takes a long time to run this program

Review: This program takes a while to load, run, and complete. I upgraded from a previous version and wish I had not. The prior version ran much quicker. While it runs, it dramatically slows the computer as it scans everything. It may be the best solution out there, but could use a lot of improvement.

Worse Tech Support

Pros: Low cost for advertised features.

Cons: Lavasoft has to have the worse technical support I've ever experience.

Review: I made the mistake of purchasing online the Ad-Aware 2007 Plus. I have sent Lava Soft and elemnet 5 a dozen email today requesting the product registration code and all I can get out of them was two computer general emails telling me they were going to respond. There is no phone support, no online support, just emails to Germany. They may claim to have the best product on the market but if you can't get technical support then it isn't worth having.

Best of the free

Pros: quite fast,pretty effective.

Cons: not nearly as good as the old version, scan will not work in Zip. files

Review: Very dissapointed with the new version, not as effective, less options, scan slower, not finding nearly as much ! also scan NOT in depth,i.e.zip files does not get rid of MRU objects as it used to do.
All in all much less effective.

Great Program - Big Problem(s)

Pros: Fast; In-Depth Scanning; Reliable; Easy-To-Use;Great Inter-face

Cons: DO NOT USE AD-WATCH

Review: I've been using Ad-Aware for years now and it's been great. All I can say - it's an aswome reliable program that works.

The one problem I've ever had, cost me well over $3,000 and losts of time, is that when I purchased Ad-Aware fully and it used Ad-Watch... Ad-Watch screwed up and DELETED ALL MY REGISTRY!!! ALL OF IT!!!! OMG!!!

I was like holy-**** and well - I couldn't even boot back up. How did I know it was Ad-Watch? Well, I had a seperate program that monitered registry and notified me of any crucial changes and what it was made by - it said Ad-Watch.exe. I could have just reinstalled windows but decided to just get a new computer.

On my new computer, the same thing happened not even 3 months after. I luckily was able to get to System Restore - restore the computer back to the previus day. Even that didnt help!!!! I ended up having to system restore again and booting into safe mode, going into the Program Files -> Lavasoft -> Ad-Watch and deleting Ad-Watch.exe complitely. When I booted back up, it stopped.

Weird, but 100% true.

Read in between the lines

Pros: Downloads fast. Find the problems quickly

Cons: Is NOT FREE. If you want to fix more than 20 problems

Review: You have to purchase a plan than ranges in price if you want to clean more than 20 problems. Is it another program that boasts to be free but if you read the find print you find out is not free in reality.

Definition Updates are not being made available

Pros: While updates were available, AdAware was excellent in finding spyware that other anti-spyware programs did not catch.

Cons: My only --but BIG! -- complaint is the unavailability of the file updates. I have tried to access them on all three of my computers with the same message: Error retrieving update.

Review: I will abandon AdAware if the definition update capability is not restored soon.

The Best Free Anti Spyware

Pros: It's Free But Good

Cons: Have not found one..

Review: This free anti-spyware has some of the best detection rates than most of the sale apps. I love the fact it has one of the best detection rates on inactive melware that can be lurking in your system just waiting for the dial tone. Ad-Aware is the 3rd spyware app I have on my computer and use it every day to clean up tracking cookies and all around hour to hour scans. In the long run it's the small stuff that become the biggest problems..

Outdated and passed by

Pros: It's still free

Cons: Hardly detects anything anymore

Review: MY PC was having problems and I run Norton Internet Security, Windows Defender, and AdAware. I ran full scans with all of them and the scans all came up clean.

Then I tried a free scan with Webroot's Spysweeper and found two items of malware and two trojans, none of which were even detected by any of the above. It's nice that AdAware is free, but it can't compete anymore with the apps you have to pay for. Spysweeper leaves them all in the dust.

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Doesn't catch spyware, firwall not intutive, very manual

Review: I pick up the Adaware plus firewall. I found the firewall with too many popups. The selections form the popup are not user friendly. This doesnt pickup adwares like my Webroot does. I just want a program to remove the spyware without me choose what are the spyware.

Works well, combined with other products provides good protection

Pros: Updates signature automatically, runs pretty quickly, catches most items I want removed

Cons: Ad-aware Personal is stripped of the most useful features, like scheduled scans

Review: I'm not sure why everyone is so high on this product. It's a good piece of software, but nothing special. It certainly won't stand on it's own. To get the extra features, you have to shell out money. That wouldn't be a problem, except you should have layered protection, meaning you'll have to purchase several products: antivirus, one of more spyware scanners, firewall, or integrated product. Bottom line, why buy Ad-aware? And why use a product you have to manually scan?

Pros: finds a lot of spyware, really speeds up pc

Cons: find all coockies and says they are critical ellements

Review: I use this piece of software on all machines i own (4), and whenever a friend complains about a slow PC, ad-aware saves the day....

I think it does not find all spyware every time, but at least it finds the bulk, so i'm happy. The only downside is that everytime i run the software, a lot of innocent coockies turn up in the results

Pros: Removes Spyware

Cons: No Shield and Some Spyware Keeps Coming Back

Review: this is a good program but dont be a fool and make it your main. it has NO SHIELD that means no protection from spyware. your main should have both, as such i myself make spycatcher express 1st of the free 1s cause it does what ad-aware does and more.

Pros: It looked like it was working, but I kept finding spyware

Cons: It infected my computer with malware!

Review: I should have known anything free would work! My computer kept bogging down. When I logged off, it took my computer forever to shut down. I would get warnings of "Your computer not responding save or loose your work" etc. What a cheap way to get you to upgrade to the professional software.

My last straw before reformat.. and it worked!

Pros: Very fast, cleans registry

Cons: Does not display filenames causing problem

Review: I tried Spybot, Windows Defender, Norton, Mcafee. None of these were able to remove the "Critical System error, Virus alert" I got on my taskbar on startup that led me to WinPro adware removal website with auto-downloads to their software. Lavasoft Ad-aware was free, had good ratings and it cleaned my system in under 2 minutes. It just saved me a lot of stress from reformating my system. Highly recommend!

Realy Good (I think)

Pros: Detects more spyware than others!

Cons: Missing real-time protection and auto-update in the free version...

Review: Recently I had a problem with spyware in my pc... My WindowsXP Home Ed said it was infected with spyware, but Windows Defender wasn't detecting it... I had read something about Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and I tried. Finaly, I got rid of all the spyware!
(I would like to have a real-time protection system but I can't afford it during many time [cause I'm 15 years old :D])
Thanks Lavasoft!

Pros: Found many bugs; programs with dangerous spy features.

Cons: Can't think of any for the basic free version.

Delete the Backups

Pros: Free up valuble space

Cons: might not let a program run

Review: You should delete your back ups that Adaware creates after the scan! These backups not only take up valuble space on you hard drive, but they also leave some what of a back door for more spyware to get in. If you can't run a program because of it, then it wasn't a very good program. On top of that there are many free alternatives.

Should Be Part of Every Computer

Pros: Finds things other programs don't, simple interface, smart scan very speedy

Cons: Pressure to upgrade, not easy to schedule weekly scans.

Review: When it comes to spyware, there are two solutions I trust. Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad Aware. Neither is better than the other, both of them complement each other.

The interface is very easy to use for the average end user, but still veratile enough for more advanced users. However, the free version lacks automatic scheduling and upgrading. This still isn't much of a problem though. When you start the program up, it will tell you if your definitions are old, and prompt you to check for updates.

I run Spybot as my main program since I can schedule it, and then run Ad Aware about once a month. It catches a few things Spybot won't, especially spyware in the registry. The smart scan is also very fast, and works well when you are pressed for time or on a slower computer.

This and Spybot should be on every computer. Spyware is now a part of every users life, but Ad Aware makes this much easier to deal with.

Kill the suckers!

Pros: It's clean and fast.

Cons: It doesn't get everything.

Review: I use three programs to combate spyware. This one, Spybot, and Spyware Doctor. I like them all and will run them once a week. Each one will pick up something the other missed. Ad-aware doesn't cause problems (like Norton) and leaves me alone. It's a good product and should be used as part of an overall protection strategy.

Good for normal use but when computer is heavily infected hope is lost.

Pros: It's all free, it works fine and almost without problems.

Cons: Has problems with some adware, some odd issues with F-Secure PEX 6 and small database of adware signatures.

Review: The Ad-Aware Se Personal is great program when using it regularly as support tool with antivirus program. It finds normal adware and spyware easily and removes them almost without a problem. In few occasions the program just halts when using it, but normally those computers are heavily infected.

When fighting off lots of spyware and such Ad-Aware can't handle all of them. Sometimes adware just isnt recognized or adware attack against Ad-Aware and halts it. When this happens you just need to use some better programs such as Spy Sweeper or Ewido. I would prefer Ewido and for some reason it's not in the review :(.

There have been some odd cases with Ad-Aware and F-Secure. For some reason Ad-Aware and new F-Secure are not working perfectly together and really odd things might happen. Off course F-Secure PEX 6 has its own engine to disinfect adware but one program is not enough when computer is in heavy use.

Good program but only for regular use. When there is problems I wouldnt count on Ad-Aware because of my experiences. Will see in the future if there would be better signatures of adware.

OVER-RATED

Pros: NICE INTERFACE, FAST SCANS

Cons: BELOW LEVEL REMOVAL

Review: I tried this product after reading the reviews from CNET and many of the users who were happy with the product. I found that it did not remove enough spyware apps as I hoped. I used Spy Sweeper beofre this and then Spy-bot. Spy-bot worked pretty good but I still was having issues with spyware not being removed from my computer so I have AD-AWARE a try. Needless to say I'm bacl using Spy Sweeper, it took care of my spyware issue I was having and in my humble opionion is still my favorite.

Pros: a few just like cons

Cons: a few just like pros

Review: this is a good antispyware starter program, however, if you ever get severe spyware, DO NOT expect this program to remove it successfully.

adaware gets destroyed by CWS and other malware

windows defender is a good antispyware, but its active scanning isnt perfect.. in fact someone installed a backdoor without my knowledge, but luckily i scanned and deleted it a minute after its creation

No Longer Removes Gator Stuff

Pros: Not Available

Cons: Not Available

Review: This was a great program until Gator sued them and they lost. Gator is one of the biggest offenders of spyware there is. This product can no longer remove their "products". I think the consumers should ban together and start a class action suit against companies like Gator though. You can use this in conjunction with CounterSpy. It does an excellant job of removing SpyWare. We have started moving a lot of our Enterprise level customers from Ad-Aware to CounterSpy now.

Excellent totally free product.

Pros: Free---easy--quick--concise-ev en for a novice

Cons: Download time, time between updates (although not bad)

Review: I lucked into this product years ago after I had a sudden problem with internet speed. I have cable internet which was suddenly the speed of a turtle on traquilizers. I was not computer savvy and was still able to easily download, install and run the product. It found HUNDREDS of spyware programs, deleted them, and my speed problems disappeared. Now, years later, I'm rather internet efficient. The first thing I do when helping someone with slow internet speed, is direct them to download THIS product. Its amazing how spyware so effectively reduces computer speed, and how WONDERFUL Ad-Aware is at removing it! While this isn't the only anti-spyware program that I use, it is the main one and it is amazingly efficient for being a free program.

They are continously improving their product, including functionality and definition upgrades.

A Very Good Anti-Spyware Utility

Pros: Was Finding Stuff While everything else was quiet

Cons: The Truth I dont know as much as this Utility Does!

Review: I have had the pleasure of both the SpyBot-Search&Destroy as well as AdawareSE applications for nearly 10 months and both of these applications have not lost there place as two of the very best free-ware offers on the internet. Both applications provide updating and increased exposure to the ever present dangerous world of anti-spyware.If I did'nt know better I would say that the AdawareSe application is about as good as any anti-spyware application that I presently utilize on my Desk Top or for that matter on my Laptop(The Laptop utilizes AdawareSE Plus)However I can't say that unequivocally but I will mention an area that was a very real surprise and its effect were measurable. There were at one point in this evolution of some 10 months a point when more MRUs were detected in spite of the fact that AdawareSE was being run in about the fourth position. That is, I have a whole host of Anti-Spyware programs and I run them everyday and usually one right after the other.I sometimes refer to this strategy as redundant control. It surmises the general position as to our place if any on the internet and if we intend to participate as we do, certain protocols seemingly are unavoidable. The placement and the capability did not seem to lessen the applications effectiveness however there were more of the MRU types than I was aware of and the ability first to discover there nuisance value if that and second to rid my database of this clutter assisted my hope to provide a better more conducive environment for my computer. To give you something of any idea of what else I run prior to running AdawareSE,First there is SpySubtract Pro,Then I run SpySweeper, then I run Window Washer and the list can go and on as to the attempt made by me to virtually eliminate this very real and dangerous threat that surfing on the internet represents. The result is that indeed, though it is admitedly rare I sometimes scan with no problems found at all with the AdawareSE application. That does not happen often but it does so more now then then, and even more so now, as we have ,"gotten the word".This is a very real plus as a free-ware offer and I do certainly feel there will always be a place for the ability and consideration that such a application provides for-Kudos to Lava-Soft.

Lavasoft is for adware and Spybot is for spyware. Use both.

Pros: Good gor detection of Adware, frequent updates.

Cons: Not so good for cleaning of Spyware. The resilient client takes too much resources on some systems (up to 10%)

Review: Since I think my opinion is useful for everybody not only for the previous poster, I repeat what I already said:

Lavasoft has it's advantages over Spybot at least as a better option for cleaning adware. And that is in the name. IN contrary, Spybot &co is software for removal of spyware. Read name. So wheres the confusion. I use both and I cant imagine use one or the other only. In terms of offering to upgrade to FULL VERSION - Well that's completely normal, at least you have a decent product that is not been stripped down. If you visit xxx-sites, then you need a resilient client get Microsoft Antispyware. It's also free and it's from Microsoft. If you talk about dirty tricks you should have a look at them. Good luck.

Mostly adequate, but not infallible

Pros: Installs & uninstalls with ease; runs fairly quickly; details problems clearly; configurable if you install optional Tweak add-in.

Cons: Resident subprogram (Ad-watch) requires purchased version; spyware found is detailed individually (instead of grouping items related to a single product together); only partially removes baddest bugs.

Review: Lavasoft has been trying to get me to buy their paid version of Ad-Aware for years, which tells you how long I've been using it. Since Spybot has a very good resident program included (TeaTimer a.k.a. Spybot Resident) for free, why would I buy a lesser product from Ad-Aware? Ad-Aware also suffers by comparison in the fact that it zips up all the bug traces removed after a sweep into one archived file. If you want to remove the old backups, you have no choice but to remove the backup of an entire session's bugs; SpyBot lets you pick and choose which if any to delete permanently or "recover". What galls me is Lavasoft, on their own website, redirecting downloaders to download.com for the software, rather than hosting their own FTP -- an obvious ploy to keep the download numbers high on download.com -- SpyBot doesn't have to stoop to that. Then there are issues with certain bad spyware that Ad-Aware will tell you it removed, only to find, when you re-run Ad-Aware, that the spyware has returned in full force. I suspect that some reviewers have partner links ($) to Lavasoft on their website, since I could never justify more than a score of 7. Based on Lavasoft's continued pushing of a paid version (-1) and pushing numbers at download.com (-1) and incomplete removal of spyware (-3), I will score this a 2. That doesn't really reflect an accurate opinion, but neither do those 8's, 9's, and 10's. I will say that Ad-Aware picks up traces of spyware that SpyBot and Spy Sweeper leave behind, but mostly those are dead registry entries which point to software that the other two have already removed.

Pros: More updates, fast engine, finds most of the spyware out there.

Cons: Support is lacking on free version.

Review: The one thing that Ad-Aware does that Spybot or any other spyware killer is update constantly. You are lucky to get one update a month with Spybot, but Ad-aware has much more frequent updates. More updates means more things it finds.

Still say Ad-Aware is better

Pros: Always finds more spyware than any other I've tried

Cons: None- never had any complaints

Review: Ran Microsoft AntiSpyware then Spybot, both came up with no spyware. Then ran Ad-Aware SE and it came up with 23 different objects, none being harmfull but still found them.

Easy to use and reliable

Pros: Quick and easy setup, easy updates

Cons: Not exactly intuitive on the "select all" right click to clean

Review: Program has been real handy and easy to distribute to users in our neighborhood. Usually a scan, clean, reboot will take car eof 90% of the spyware issues plaguing a computer (speed, etc).

Pros: Got rid of everything slowing down my laptop, easy to use, saved my computer

Cons: It saved my computer, no excuse to upgrade!

Review: Great product, easy to use, will get rid of spyware/adware, worm, etc.

Now I'm mad because I can't convince the wife to let me buy a new computer...

the company sucks

Pros: software itself is good

Cons: no customer support

Review: after 10 emails for tech support, no response back. Sent emails to customer service, 2 weeks later, still no reply. Good product as long as you never have to contact the company, they are in Sweden.

Mixed bag for latest version of SE.

Pros: Works well to take care of adware

Cons: It is flawed with a virus

Review: I ran the program several times even when McAfee found and cleaned the Exploit-Byte Virus everytime. It says that it is executed by launching Ad-Aware SE. It tried to find the virus several ways and it was never found. It only pops up when running Ad-Aware SE. Onces cleaned it does what it is supposed to do. It also finds 2 problems and you can delete them the first time you run it. I am not going to run it unless I really need to or until they come out with a newer version without virus'.
