AOL released a new Active Security Monitor, a program that continuously checks the status of your security applications. The AOL Active Security Monitor is free to download whether you are an AOL customer or not Unlike Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare, a subscription service which provides surprisingly little specific information about the overall security of your PC, AOL Active Security Monitor features an overall security score, with individual security scores for your firewall, antivirus, antispyware, Windows and browsers, wireless, P2P, and utilities apps, along with details regarding each. Unlike OneCare, which provides antivirus and antispyware software, AOL's monitor offers no security applications of its own, but it does provide access to download or purchase security applications online. For a look inside, see our AOL Active Security Monitor slideshow.

Within the interface, click any of the problem areas to see a report of what AOL Active Security Monitor finds wrong with your computer. After AOL Active Security Monitor identifies a problem, click the Improve Score tab to see what you can do to remedy the situation. In many cases, there are links to free services, such as Microsoft Windows Updates and CNET Download.com. A very cool-looking graph displays the relative score of your PC over a period of days, allowing you to see how well you are maintaining your desktop's security. It also provides a detailed report of the current status of your machine. In addition to seeing the history of your security score, you can trace past alerts and see the guidance provided toward making your computer more secure.

annoying as fails to update with your programs

Pros: lets you know when anti-virus shuts off

Cons: Will not review any upgrades like windows xp3 and spyware, I have two programs, it barely acknowledges them. If it can't coordinate itself with your system it's useless.

Review: NO I would not reccomend this to anyone. Like some programs I had from start this also fails to advance in technology. I just deleted it from my computer thinking if reinstall will work but given there are others with same issues think will just keep it deleted.

ASM Does Not Recognize XL SP3 Update

Pros: Was Great Until Laatest MS Update for XL

Cons: Does Not Recognize MS XL SP3 Update

Review: Have used ASM for several years with no problems and found it to be useful.. However, since the Microsoft XL SP3 download update has been installed, ASM has apparently not been updated for this latest major MS XL download. ASM gives me lower numerical readings and refers to installing the SP2 update!!

this program works very well.

Pros: gives agerneral idea of where security needs to inprove on a system

Cons: won't pick up any of my anti spyware programs

Review: this program world be the best if it would pick up my anti spy ware programs

Like having a another rev counter

Pros: It is giid for people who dont have a clue about security

Cons: it is another reason to make your pc/NB even slower

Review: Fun to have a report card and see how we all rate..... thats about it folks it doesn't give you any confidence as it over detects or forgets about the really important stuff.
I would not recommend it to anyone other than a pc troglodytes.

Needs improvement with network setup and adding backup software. No instruction manual.

Pros: Point out problems, and tries to explain how to fix them.

Cons: Needs a help manual, only looks at it's family to software.

Review: I liked the way I get scores on all the computers on the network. There is NO way to add other software which performs backup function. I can't get my laptop to network with the other two computer on the small family network. I have a firewall problem and I can't determine how to fix it. so I'am at a stand still, trying to figure HOW this works or do I delete it.

Not as thorough as it claims

Pros: nice, simple interface

Cons: fails to detect some major programs

Review: I've only just installed it and opened it--and, a sort of strength in itself, two minutes is all it takes to unearth the pros and cons of this simple and straightforward program.
The interface is pleasant and so simple, a great-granny could use it. The problem is, what it doesn't do.
In a few seconds it summed up, broke down in to numerous different categories and reported my system security. With two exceptions, it described these as "excellent". One, was Spyware Prevention--which it reported as "poor". It failed to notice, I had ZoneAlarm installed, up-to-date and finely tuned. The other was "PC Utilities"--meaning backup software--which it reported as "good". Why it should be "good" when it didn't find any at all, is a mystery. Add to that, that it failed to find Norton Ghost AND Windows own Backup facility, and you get the picture.
The thing is, as long as you know yourself, what you've got on your system, the rest of what the program reports probably makes it worth using--that is, of course, if the rest of the report is itself accurate. Given the two serious failings mentioned, this is a good question.
A definite "so-so".

great tool to see how secure your computer really is!!

Pros: Very easy to install & manage. It also provides links w/ solutions.

Cons: I found no problems!

Review: My pc rated a 91, excellent!
Updated
I can't believe I actually love something from that blah blah AOL. This little thing opened my eyes to a few issues I wasn't aware of..but what I don't understand is how can anyone say it works so slow, etc. Are they serious or does some ppl just like writing hateful things? I've been seeing some very hateful one, two liners on some pretty good products, but anyway I installed this ASM twice & it summed up my score in like 20, 30 seconds. It gets even faster after the 1st time. I just put it on my little neice's new pc to make it fun & easy for her to learn how to take care of it!

Overlooks installed programs, Gave me a 65 when it was 96

Pros: something to play with

Cons: a wast of time and space

Review: Not a wast of time if you like to play around with your computer.

ASM bypasses Password

Pros: It points out weaknesses.

Cons: Slows down my system.

Review: My real question/problem with ASM is that clicking INFO connects to the Internet without asking for my password. Normally I connect through Sympatico tha prompts me for a pssword. But clicking INFO connect directly bypassing a 'required' password.

Shouldn't Download!

Pros: It is a good, but slow program.

Cons: Slows your PC performance in GAME!

Review: AOL Active Security Monitor

- It says i don't have any tuning software(that i have).
- It slows your PC performance!
- I gave it a #4
- It has nice details, Tells you if you have P2P(peer to peer)software.
- My overall thinking said i should have downloaded it.

Good app, but downloaded it twice & it refuses to update.

Pros: Easy to use, quick download.

Cons: I've downloaded it twice now and neither version will update.

Review: I just uninstalled the old version I had and redownloaded and installed. Neither version will update, but it still tells me on a regular basis that there is a newer version and to get it.

Other than that, I like it far more than the prior security thing they had!

Better but...

Pros: Now ASM sees my AOL security software

Cons: But can't see yet My XDrive backup

Review: So ASM strongly recommends me XDrive
Updated
For the rest, it works good and helps me to do the necessary updates when necessary if I forget that. The only point is my file backup programs which works good, however ASM perpetually recommends it strongly!

complete waste of memory

Pros: None that I have found

Cons: More like a trojan horse than a utility

Review: After surfing on AOL one day, this piece of garbage was installed on my computer without my consent. Now, imagine my complete and total disgust and ire towards AOL because so far, I have not been able to uninstall the piece of trash.

Useless Product

Pros: Lets you know when files are out of date, sees how secure your system is, easy to use

Cons: Dosen't regonize some programs, wastes some system resources, annoying at times

Review: When I first installed AOL Active Security Monitor, I found that it slowed down my computer and it didn't regonize my spyware security program, SUPERAntiSpyware. After a while, I thought this was just a waste of my computer space and I uninstalled it. Also, the "three beeps" sound was annoying. Sure, my computer's anti-virus files were out of date, BUT IT AUTMOATICALLY UPDATES! And guess what my anti-virus program did two seconds after being alerted my virus software wasn't up to date. It displayed a little pop up that said "avast! has been updated". I found no use for this program, and a very bad annoyance and waste of system resources.

helpful as 1 time use

Pros: checks basic coverage

Cons: misses some things,

Review: Seems to be of value only if your coverage is not complete, misses some things and suggests that you need to purchase their promoted products. Also ties up resources delaying start up and slowing computer down. Also has annoying loud beeping down that scared the hell out of me the first time it occured.

A good utility to monitor all your protection.

Pros: Give you a heads-up when programs need updating.

Cons: Not 100% accurate when analyzing your programs.

Review: This is a good utility to keep all of your protection up-to-date but it has its flaws. For instance, I am running Windows 2000 on my son's PC and it says I don't have system restore activated. That feature is not on Windows 2000 and it lowered my rating because of this. Also says my AOL Safety and Security is out-of date but I don't have that program installed. I am using Windows Live OneCare. Other than those little quirks, the program is great.

Scan time too long

Pros: Basically useful program

Cons: Automatic scan during booting seems interminable

Review: I think the monitor is good but its scan takes several minutes during booting to produce a rating. Booting is seemingly interminable at best. The long time added by ASM scan is annoying.

User Rating: 9/10

Thanks to this, my computer is as fast as the day it arrived!

Pros: Makes a quick, but effective scan of your system. It identifies your problems and gives you recommendations to help fix them. It alerts you when your score drops. It is a must-have for pc lovers!

Cons: It is a startup program.

Review: This is great! Before I got this, I thought I had the safest computer. Then AOL ASM told me that I needed to update my security apps. By the time I raised my pc score to a 100, my pc was in great shape. People who want to protect their pc, need to get this program!

Good monitor, Does not recognise other firewall and spywares

Pros: Simple to use, diferent monitors, one of its kind, its free

Cons: Doesnot recognise other firewalls and Anti spyware

Review: Does not recognise Nortan 2006 Internet Security as a fire wall and Spyware doctor as a Anti spyware software, P2p Software are not recognised effectively(Bit Torrent or Getright For torrent). Even when Windows update has downloaded all updates and installed software does not recognise it

User Rating: 9/10

Nothing like it

Pros: Very Helpful

Cons: no Con at all ( none )

Review: The Detail after the scan is so helpful. It points out how you can get a better score. I got a 92 at first, then a 98. THANK YOU AOL. I also want to thank C-net.

User Rating: 3/10

BAD BAD BAD

Pros: A LOT OF NICE FEATURES

Cons: IT IS CONFUSSED

Review: TELLING ME THAT MY WINDOWS UPDATES ARE NOT TURNED ON.. MY AD-AWARE SPYWARE IS NOT ENABLED,MY SPYBOT S&D IS NOT UPDATED, AND OTHERS... BUT STILL GIVES ME A 95 SCORE.
Updated
