  • "Better than Norton Antivirus Where it Counts"
    on by lsylvain

Pros Protection against viruses, adware and Malware, especially in email, all in one. And it's free!

    Cons None yet...

Summary Contrary to what is stated in the first review, this product *DOES INDEED* scan as well as provide active, real-time protection. In fact, the scan provided superior results to Norton Antivirus on both computers that I tested it on. It is nice to have protection against malware and adware included instead of as an option for addtional cost as is the case with Symantec.

I was very impressed that the product caught viruses and malware that had been lurking in email that had been sitting on my computer since I first set it up and imported the email folder from my old computer. All this time since I bought this computer back in 2003 I had thought that Norton had been keeping me clean. Kapersky found over 80 missed trojans, malware, worms and other viruses that Norton has been missing all thnis time!

I have been a loyal Norton customer since way back in the early nineties before viruses existed and Perter Norton released the Norton Utilities for DOS. Since being aquired by Symantec the quality of the utilities has been steadily dropping, the price has been rising (for example, you did not used to have to pay to renew viruses yearly), and the support has sunk into the toilet. It is good to see Kapersky take this creative approach. Even if they decide to charge later, they are penetrating the market and that will perhaps wake up Symantec to the need to provide better support and not gouge their customers.

I saw the mention of the rescue disk not being a feature of Kapersky. You know what? I don't have much confidence in rescue disks. Hardly anyone uses them and they need to be maintained to really provide a true rescue. The best protection is prevention, and Kapersky resoundingly beat Norton hands-down in my personal home network test.

Very nice product, Kapersky! Oh, and the companion free product form AOL, Active Security Monitor, rocks when used with Kapersky. Active Virus Shield and Active Security Monintor make a very nice product suite!!!

  • "Re-installation"
    on by ghendric

Pros Very good virus protection with low overhead

Cons Re-activation doesn't work with previous serial keys and new ones can't be retrieved from AOL anymore.

Summary Re-installing this application while trying to reuse your serial key results in failure. Apparently, the serial key is based on date and time and any previous keys results in a error message indicating that the local date on your pc doesn't match the activation server date.

  • "It's unobtrusive --- and free!"
    on by Manuz1234

    Pros Free, unobstrusive

    Cons What's it really doing?

Summary I like this as a security program for your computer. To begin with, it's free. Can't argue with that. But that's not enough. It also has to keep your system from bogging down and has to keep it secure. Regarding the first point, this program is topnotch. I started with Norton Antivirus - a complete behemoth which killed my computer. Then I switched to Avast. Free, which was nice, but ended up bogging my computer down again. I didn't actually want to buy Kaspersky, which I heard had a small footprint, but then I found this program. So far, so good. The only problems have been a few slow bootups when the program needed to update itself. But nothing compared to other anti-virus/security software. And it appears to be doing a pretty good job checking for viruses, malware, spyware, etc. The only complaint I have is that the documentation is so lame that you really don't know what it's doing (i.e. what's it's scanning and checking for.) But overall, I really dig this program. Who cares that its AOL? It still works better than most of the other security packages that I've used.

  • "Very good AV software"
    on by Bopper_T

Pros Easy to use, thorough, all in one adware and spyware protection.

Cons No boot time scan (to my knowledge)

Summary An excellent piece of AV software.
It has found adware, spyware and other malware than avast! Antivir, Spybot S&S and AD-Aware (all highly rated products) missed.

The only draw back I can see is that there is no option to schedule a boot time scan. If there is one then I apologize.

  • "Very well done"
    on by nojunk42

Pros efficiant, easy to use and great results

Cons the quick scan takes too long

Summary I feel that this is more superior than Norton anti virus. Also so much easier to use than Avg. And a whole lot less complicated than Defender Pro.
