The biggest news with AVG Anti-Virus 8 is that it includes Linkscanner, a technology that actively blocks malicious content from Web sites that may have been hijacked or otherwise compromised. Also, antivirus, antispyware, and antirootkit preventions have been combined into one product. The new drive-by download protection combined with AVG's award winning effectiveness in blocking and removing antivirus and antispyware code is tempered only by its somewhat slow performance in CNET Labs benchmark tests. While individual applications loaded fast, scan and boot times trended toward the slow end.
Installation
We were able to download and install AVG Anti-Virus 8 on a Dell XPS machine running Windows XP SP2 with no difficulty and without rebooting. If you are upgrading from a previous version of AVG, you must uninstall that version first before installing version 8.0. AVG provides a fully functional 30-day trial.
While installing, AVG asks one critical question: do you want to install the security toolbar? Since it's hard to say whether you want that, we recommend saying no. Although AVG recommends installation, we found that it installs a prominent search box with Yahoo as the default search engine, and little else. Even without the toolbar, we were still able to use the Linkscanner technology.
After installation, AVG walks you through seven steps:
- Screen one merely describes the wizard
- Screen two asks how often AVG should update itself
- Screen three asks if you want to report compromised Web sites to AVG
- Screen four asks if you want to use the Yahoo search as your Internet browser default (this is the second time you asked to adopt the Yahoo search engine; if you installed the security toolbar, you'll already have Yahoo on your browser via the toolbar)
- Screens five and six lets you to download updates
- The seventh step tells you that the seven-step process you've completed is just the first part.
The left windowpane includes only three options, Overview (the icon view in the right hand window), Computer Scanner, and Update Now. Computer Scanner has but one option, scan all. Update Now is equally opaque, mysteriously searching and downing something onto your PC.
A toolbar above these windows contains the advanced feature options.
Should you wish to remove AVG Anti-Virus 8, there is a removal option under All Programs. After a reboot, we found a handful of registry entries related to the free trial, and some empty directories in our system directory.
Features
The biggest addition to AVG Anti-Virus 8 is the inclusion of the Linkscanner technology, but the integration is less than optimal. Linkscanner, formerly from Exploit Prevention Labs, is known for its ability to block malicious content from Web sites.
For threat testing, we directed our browser to a site known to host malicious content. AVG Anti-Virus 8 did flag the site, however, our request for additional information about the threat produced a generic AVG virus encyclopedia page. With the standalone Linkscanner Pro package, it would tell us which exploit it found and it would produce a rich log archive so you can see which sites it said had malicious software. We couldn't find any of that within AVG Anti-virus 8.
We also tested the Linkscanner integration within AVG Anti-Virus 8 by visiting five current phishing Web sites listed on
Performance
AVG Anti-Virus 8 scored well in CNET Labs' performance tests and in third-party, independent antivirus testing using live viruses, although not always the top position. On the CNET iTunes test, AVG Anti-Virus 8 came in just 4 seconds above the test system at 272 seconds. On the CNET Microsoft Office test, AVG Anti-Virus 8 finished in 1,413 seconds. In a test scanning a single folder with compressed and media files, AVG Anti-Virus 8 completed it in 550 seconds. And in boot speed, AVG Anti-Virus 8 came in toward the slower end, with a fast 37.95 seconds. Click here to find out more about how we test Antivirus software.
In terms of protecting your PC, we refer readers to two leading independent antivirus testing organizations. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, gave AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 an Advanced rating (highest) for On Demand protection and Advanced Plus (highest) for heuristic protection, blocking 97 percent of the malicious code used in the test. Our second source of independent antivirus testing, CheckVir.com, ranked AVG Anti-Virus 7.5--the previous version--as one of five products to earn their Standard rating (highest) for identifying malicious software (the products were not tested for removal).
Support
AVG Technologies provides AVG Anti-Virus 8 customers with e-mail technical support within the program. Online, there are searchable FAQs with a handful of useful questions and answers, and there is a downloadable 124-page PDF users' manual that, unfortunately, lacks a comprehensive index. AVG doesn't provide telephone technical support , nor is there a free online user's forum for posting questions.
Conclusion
AVG Anti-Virus 8 is solid at finding and removing viruses and spyware as well as blocking Web threats. As for antiphishing, the product could be better at detecting newly active phishing sites. Also, we look for further improvements in performance, as well as more technical support options in future releases.

Huge Resource HOG
Pros: It is free and it updates itself. I did not get overt virus or malware activity while using it. I used it for several years, but I have gone onward and upward.
Cons: How does 13,000,000 page faults over 2 days strike you? And a usual commit charge of over 1,200,000? Further it took up to 12 hours to do a full scan on my 900GB (on 8 partitions). Forget Saturday nights and Sunday mornings using the computer!.
Basically AVG has become a resource/time hog which does not completely free one from worry. I don't think it does its job very well. And I do not recommend it any longer. It's a relief to have removed it, which went well, despite other reviewers' apparent problems.

Hijacked my computer.
Pros: None this program is a virus in disguise
Cons: Hijacked my WHOLE computer. Internet will not work unless I have it installed. It worked before I installed it. Now when I uninstall it my Internet does not work unless it is installed. WILL NOT ALLOW INTERNET EXPLORER TO WORK.
Send It Global etc. Cannot connect to IE at all. It is completely blocked NO MATTER WHAT MY FIREWALL IS SET TO!
i HAVE TO END THE PROCESS JUST TO USE MY COMPUTER! AVG IS NOTHING MORE THAN A VIRUS DISGUISED AS AN ANTIVIRUS APPLICATION! PERIOD. IT DOES NOT FIND VIRUSES AT ALL.

Cons: scanning is slow and real-time protection sucks

AVG was asleep at it's post
Pros: I definitely got what I paid for.
Cons: I just spent $150 having my computer debugged after a nasty virus downloaded itself while AVG was suppose to be guarding my system.
But the bottom line for AVG is, it failed the test and failed badly. But, I guess I got what I paid for!

Nightmarish-Wasted hrs of my precious time
Pros: A fairly decent reputation of a long gone prior life
Cons: I tried it as a substitute for Mr. Dinosaur McAfee. Proved worse than McA. That must take some talent to rank behind McAfee. Even when OFF, it ate all my resources leading to overheating, crashes, reboot. Were the only things spent time wen I had it

Keeps your system clean, if you like long naps.
Pros: Installs easily.
The free version offers a lot for nothing.
Catches a lot of threats while browsing and receiving e-mails.
Cons: Slow as the day is long. The resident shield often locks up my computer when I opening programs, I end up turning it off, which somewhat defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.
out of 115 user reviews
New update is lame.
Pros: AVG Free has always been more than adequate in protecting all of the computers in y home, better than most AV software that I have had to pay for.
Cons: It shut down my computer last night (15 may 2009) and forced it to restart in SAFE mode. When I rebooted, the AVG was uninstalled!!! When I tried to reinstall I received a pop-up advising that the file was "corrupt". SALES replied, not SUPPORT!

Two stars are too generous!
Pros: Installs fast.
Cons: It doesn't really work all the time.

Reviews infested with heavy viral marketing
Pros: dont use the product
Cons: dont use the product
Not all reviews are viral, nor does this mean the product is necessarily good, but don't trust the reviews, they are mostly forged, likely by a competing anti-virus company (you'd be surprised how often companies do this.)

A great antivirus and it's free
Pros: Easy installation, Free.
Cons: A bit slow to scan and heavy on resources

Shouldn't an Antivirus program be ANTI Virus??
Pros: It is Free
Cons: DOES NOT DO ITS INTENDED JOB
out of 115 user reviews
A step down from AVG 7
Pros: I haven't found any yet.
Cons: Every time I scan, my hard drive actually _crashes_ and I get a blue screen. This should not be happening, and it has never happened using any other virus scanning software in the past. My computer is not even a year old, it should not be troubled.

Works great!
Pros: Started with 7.5, currently running 8.5. Scans could be faster, but no problems to report.
Cons: Scans take time.

Danger - 8.5 Messes Up System - DONT DOWNLOAD
Pros: old version i had was fine - used on a very regular basis. but no more
Cons: Norton antivirus went crazy after I downloaded 8.5/ dsound3dd.dll showed up on system. Had to remove in safe mode. IE faied to find any web sites with their toolbar installed. Uninstall and everything back to normal. beware spyware doctor also.

the bad antivirus software
Pros: I didn't found any good on this software
Cons: It's slows down my notebook startup, scanning using many system CPU, memory
out of 115 user reviews
DID NOT DELETE TROJANS
Pros: Generally good at identifying threats such as tracking cookies.
Cons: Just now, it found 2 trojan installers, and 6 trojans in a scan. It deleted the installers, but not the trojans! So for Spyware you're better off having a seperate malware scanner.
out of 115 user reviews
Best Virus scan on the market hands down.
Pros: Quick installation
Blocks all harmful websites
Updates daily
Low on system resources compared to the competition
Works fine on Vista (don't listen to the Vista whiners who refuse to upgrade)
Cons: None its the best protection available!
It works what more can you say then that.
Dont waste your time with bloaded programs like Norton and McAfee which will make your computer unusable because they use so much resources.
out of 115 user reviews
Outstanding
Pros: Very easy to use.Easy setup.Easy on system resources.Does a very good job running alone or when I am browsing.
Cons: To many options. It's nice but could be confusing.I don't line the tool bar. The firewall can be just a bit annoying at times.

DO NOT INSTALL THIS PIECE OF CRAP IT WILL RUIN YOUR PC!
Pros: i'm sure it' antiviruses :P
Cons: I work fixing pcs for a living, lately I'm getting a lot of pcs that are suffering from the black screen of death. In all cases, everyone had just uninstalled AVG from their pc, then once the computer restarts it just goes to a black screen.
out of 115 user reviews
Can't get rid of it.
Pros: It does an ok job for something that is free but really jams things up even after you have uninstalled it.
Cons: It has taken my months to figure out that AVG was the cause of my slow start up and freezing. I thought I had worn out my task manager.
out of 115 user reviews
Worked for me.
Pros: I hardly noticed it even being there. Quick to catch things.
Cons: I can't think of any problems I had with it.
out of 115 user reviews
Beware of AVG 8.0
Pros: AVG Anti-Virus software is a free download, free updating of its protection.
Cons: However, by updating to AVG 8.0, there're more problems than solutions as a email or software can be deleted without owner's knowledge.

AVG is worse than a virus-invaded and owns my machine
Pros: Five years ago I used AVG and my PC never even got a cold. Recently I purchased a laptop. I trusted AVG. I installed the free trial version, to buy the full version later. I must say NO VIRUS DARED. AVG stopped every download and page change.
Cons: I'm stuck with AVG. No uninstall.exe. Not on CP remove list. Tried uninstall utility. Wasn't found. It hides. It's all over my registry and services. Can't find how to remove it. AVG is criminal, this is no accident. Once you got AVG it has you!!
I got fed up and found another anti-spyware but AVG had taken over the role of firewall. I got the idea that AVG knew what my plan was (as if we were married and I found a new lover). AVG was my firewall and there was no obvious way to shut the free version down. AVG would not allow me to download "the other woman".
I was so frustrated, I went to the control panel to uninstall AVG while it wasn't looking. AVG WAS NOT LISTED IN MY WINDOWS UNINSTALL PROGRAMS LIST. Can you believe that?
This software was not going to beat me... I am, after all, a real living human being, with a college education and almost half my brain cells were intact. I went to the garage on the opposite end of the house from the computer room to formulate my strategy.
But really, that software can't beat me... all AVG is is a combination of digits. Ones and twos I'm told, just a bunch of switches, either on or off. And how many digits could AVG have? Even a million digits can't compare to the fabulous human brain. There has to be billions of neurons in this brain. How many neurons does AVG have? HA!! See what I mean? HA!
So that night while my Windows Vista Home premium OS was in hibernation and AVG was sound asleep, I tip-toed into the computer room and quickly booted up and prepared for a surprise attack. The way I figured it, hibernation would be quick to get the show going.
I anxiously anticipated the familiar spinning and whirring of the hard drive as I fumbled with the six letter password (AVG hadn't allowed me to turn that password feature off.. grrrr). Of course adrenaline was shooting through my system and my hands were shaking furiously. I had to try four times to get the six letters entered accurately. I had practiced this password for speed on an old electric typewriter the day before. I was scared.......
Too late... I could see by the little AVG icon in the task bar that the monster was awake and probably ready to do battle. Now what? I can't get to the control panel in time now.... not the way I'm shaking. I quickly grab for the wireless mouse but in my hurry it gets away and jumps to the floor. (AVG has subverted my loyal mouse during the night?)
If I had been thinking logically the previous day I would have created a short cut to the Window uninstall link on the desktop. It?s too late to think of that now. With my trembling fingers gripping the defiant mouse, I click Start, Control Panel and then I realize... I hadn't set the Control Panel icons to "classic view". I'm new to the Vista protocol, I can never remember which of the new icons has the uninstall feature. I click on "Systems and Maintenance". No, that's not the one... uh... which one next? Oh, there it is... right under my nose...."PROGRAMS"!!
I quickly glance at the stopwatch I had hung around my neck. I'm almost two minutes behind what I had envisioned. The uninstall feature is populating the programs now.... taking its sweet time too. OK. I look and look again... there is no icon for AVG. Drat!!! I blew it! AVG apparently had time to wake up and remove its icon from the list. Now what?
Plan B.... I was afraid of this, I have to go into Windows Explorer and do a search of the folders. The program files and then the drivers and the registry. I had used the library PC two days before to familiarize myself with the locations of security files. There in the library I had the privacy to take notes where all the AVG .exe, .dll, .sys, .ini, .cfg files reside.
One reason I'm going into such detail about this is to let everyone know, the AVG files and folders are everywhere and in the thousands. And some are not obviously named. That AVG program winds itself throughout your system and sometimes it hides. It assigns tasks and duties to itself that once it's ingrained in your system you may never get it loose. It's like thousands of roots snaking itself into every critical folder, critical, service and process. It snatches the originally installed file out by the throat and strangles it. THIS IS A FACT! If you have or ever had AVG installed on your computer do a search of your hard drive. You will be amazed...
I never did get rid of AVG. No file remover has been able to get rid of it. It still owns me. Take my word for it. This is a true story. DON'T BUY AVG!!!

"When good products go bad"
Pros: - Good virus detection rates
- Easy installation and use
Cons: - False positives (most famously user32.dll causing Windows to crash)
- Updates require restart and will often cause AVG to misbehave
- Firewall is at best 'flakey'
This is a list of some of the problems I have encountered with AVG:
- The famous false positive causing AVG to delete critical Windows files. Regular users can't easily fix this since Windows does not start at all.
- After updating and restarting AVG won't start at all and requires a reinstall.
- After an update the firewall defaults to 'Allow all traffic' on the server.
- For some reason the firewall settings can get corrupted causing the firewall to stop and also allow all traffic. This can be resolved by deleting a corrupted file.
- After an update and reboot the firewall defaults to 'Block all traffic'. This has given me a lot of problems with a server at a remote locaton. The only solution is to drive over to the server in question to manually fix the problem! With all the server downtime in between.
The worst part is the support Grisoft will give you. Their response is always the same generic answer that basically boils down to: Tough sh*t! You'll have to reinstall AVG.
AVG really isn't what it used to be, and the firewall is an admins worst nightmare.
I recommend you to think twice before installing AVG because the cost might be much higher than the benefit. And even the free version will cost you a lot in the long run.

Cleaned nasty STIs (Surf-transmitted-infections).

Pros: It works in the back ground, and updates automatically.
Cons: I don't dislike anything about it.

Sad. Updating simply stopped. Jammed up whole system
Pros: The obvious is that it's free and from a reputable company.
Cons: As to being "free", well I suppose that you get what you pay for, The company blew it on this one. What a wase of time. If this is the way the free edition works, no way do I want to even look at the paid version.
2. If this is the way one of the products works, save me from their others.
3. The interface is confusing.

Avoid this product
Pros: I've used AVG for about 4 years now - always happy with it but I have to abandon it now.
Cons: AVG 8.0 is crippling my machine. I end task Firefox on a regular basis after installing it. My CPU is frequently pegged - AVGSRX.EXE is typically the culprit.

Problems at first, works fine every since.
Pros: Well... #1) It's free! I've never had a virus problem since using AVG and it uses an extremely simple interface. Won't ever pay for Anti-Virus software ever again.
Cons: I did have issues with it updating at first, but after awhile it was fine. Also, the design is a little old-fashioned, but who cares when it's free, right?

Pros: Great. I actually got a hold of a free copy when i signed up for one offer. Great extension to the Free version. Defiantly worth the cost!
Cons: When you enable tracking cookies, it thinks almost every cookie is going to kill you.

Cons: aggressive updates, which is annoying.
excessive deletion of files, which kills other necessary programs.

Unlike Everyone Else
Pros: Unlike everyone else I enjoy the new security AVG offers, I have 2 pc, 1 VISTA and one that came with VISTA but I downgraded to XP, i had trouble with AVG on vista but lets be honest its VISTA! don't blame AVG, blame Microsoft.
Cons: The only difference with this version of AVG if your computer illiterate then navigation might be tough it has more option now. It also take a bit more memory, but if your a computer freak with tons of memory then no problem.
Cons
Memory usage is all, and vista installation but as I mentioned its Vista, it has a tendency of messing everything up

Overall, great product.
Pros: Easy installation, easy to use, excellent detection. Received Advanced+ rating from AV-Comparatives (a non-biased independent tester of AV) in their on-demand comparative and a Advanced rating for their proactive test.
Cons: Slow scanning speed.
All AV software is gonna miss some malware that other AVs will pick up. The best solution is to choose the AV that consistently receives excellent on-demand and proactive detection rates from non-profit AV evaluators.
I am currently running the AVG 8.0 free version on my computer at home (which is over 5 years old with 2.4 GHz processing speed and 512GB of ram) and have not noticed a heavy footprint at all. I am also running the AVG 8.0 Antivirus paid version at work (3.06 GHz and 1GB ram) and it does not slow down my system one bit. However, as I have mentioned its scanning speed is longer when compared to competitors, particularly on my home PC. My work computer completes scans much faster and is probably due to both the increased performance of the machine and because the paid version runs faster.
I recommend downloading the free version and if you like it after a week continue to get the paid trial version. Then, get the paid version when the trial runs out.

Pros: IT'S FREE AND HAVE TO WRITE MORE AS THIS SITE WON'T LET ME SENT REVIEW OTHERWISE
Cons: 2ND TIME WRITING THIS AS SCREEN WENT BLANK! ANYWAY, MY EMAILS WENT FUNNY, COMP RAN SLOW AND I'VE GOT VIRU'S NOW WHICH I DIDN'T HAVE BEFORE AS ONLY REFORMATED BEFORE I INSTALLED.

Great for people with a lot of free time on their hands
Pros: It looks ok...and they have a pretty website
Cons: The entire product really. After installation it all goes down like a lead balloon
After a fairly easy installation onto my machines I couldn't help but notice that they were running a bit slow, which in some ways, is acceptable at first as the software will continue to write new rules when it has first been installed. For the first few days I tried to ignore the slow performance and 'write it off' as the software 'settling in', instead I was more focused on what could possibly be effecting my internet connection, as all of a sudden, everything had become incredibly slow. After a few minutes of 'playing about' I found that turning the "Active Surf-Shield" off seemed to help a bit, and that even thinking about touching the "Search-Shield" button was a big no-no as this would cause my systems to throw fits of panic, locking up for a whilst before asking conformation, then spending a few minutes locked up again, at this point I would go and make a cup of tea and try to wait it out.
By the third day I'd realised that I'd spent most of my time waiting for the computer to catch up with what I was doing, and that I'd drunk through quite a few cartons of milk in the process (always a bad sign). At this point I was quite aggravated with the system performance constantly lagging behing and decided to see what options I could change to speed things up a bit.
From the main control panel I can...look at the icons and that?s about it. When AVG state you don't need to be a security wiz-kid to use their software they weren?t joking, because you can't use their software. The control panel basically tells you what you already know, what you have turned on, and what you have turned off. To get to the more 'meaty' options you have to try and navigate your way through the more complicated scary sounding "Advanced options".
After fiddling around with a few scanning setting and memory usage rights I had found that the software had dramatically improved, I could move the pointer on the screen smoothly, I could have more than three tabs on IE open at the same time...obviously not good enough. I don?t think people understand how slow, slow is when they read some of the available reviews, on my system it has taken twice as long (sometimes longer) to open a small word document or internet page
I would avoid this release; I would imagine it will leave you horribly disappointed...thank goodness for the 30day money back guarantee!

You'd be better off without virus protection
Pros: Installs easily in WinXP and Win2000 (only with NTFS), but that's it.
Cons: Slows system performance, gives allot of false positives and let's in all kind of viruses that never would've happened with ver 7.0 or 7.5.

Pros: Installed easily.
Cons: After desktop stopped recognizing DVD drive and MagicJack internet phone quit, I was ready to throw in the towel. Tried multiple attempts to bring them back to life - nothing. Did a system restore prior to AVG 8, and *HAPPINESS* I am running again.

Customer support is unacceptable. Product has bugs.
Pros: Replaced Norton AV with AVG 8 because Norton seemed to be a resource hog. AVG 8 seems to work faster and bog down my system less compared to Norton. However, I had to disable the LinkChecker feature, because it slowed down browsing.
Cons: My PC would not boot in Safe Mode. It halted on AVG driver. Reported problem to customer service. Uninstalled AVG. Confirmed it WAS an AVG problem. Then, I could not reinstall using my paid license key. Customer support never again replied to emails.
Updated on Sep 17, 2008Addendum:
AVG Technologies USA, Inc. has their offices in Orlando, FL. The Better Business Bureau of Central Florida rates this company as follows: Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the BBB due to unanswered complaint(s).
If you're feeling lucky, buy AVG 8. If you're feeling smart, don't. In any case, a wise person would head over to the BBB web site and check them out. (http://www.orlando.bbb.org/codbrep.html?wlcl=y&id=170148812#CustExp)
By the way, they are not even a BBB acredited business. Wonder why...?

It's really Junk, I had to rebuild my machine
Pros: The pros are that AVG 7.5 was a really strong product.
Cons: But unfortunately they dropped the ball with 8.0
It majorly slows down the machine, I origionally installed AVG because NORTON was so slow, and used a big memory footprint, now this advantage is all but Gone.
but now my 'kernel cpu usage" peeks just to copy a file.
I used to copy a 2gb movie from one hdd to the other in less than 30 seconds,
now it's like 45 minutes,
Only change was installing AVG 8.0
I'm not installing it again, until they come out and say they have fixed performance under XP SP2.

Stops viruses, but...
Pros: Detects and eliminates viruses 100% of the time so far. The link scanner is a great addition. There is no repetitive renewal process every so many months like Avast which requires you to keep you key on hand. Did i mention the free part?
Cons: It's slower than a Molasses in January when trying to scan. It also takes up way too much memory for an average Joe's machine, especially if it is infected with Windows Vista.

Pros: All the new options and easy to understand
Cons: Slows internet and computer functions. Even after disabling many of the options, still made computer slow. It took Microsoft outlook 8 minutes to send a 15 k text file. Timed out several times while attempted to connect to router or internet.

slashed bandwidth by 80%?!?!
Pros: uninstalled cleanly
Cons: totally trashed performance on a decent system
As if a 50% in overall performance wasn't enough (could barely run 2 apps at once), AVG 8.0 actually slashed my broadband Internet performance by, I'm not kidding, 80%.
I could live with the firewall constantly resetting itself, and even the constant whining if I tried to turn off some features (those that allow it), if that would have improved performance, but no.

Don not upgrade
Pros: The new UI is nicer
Cons: scan time, pop ups
I have used AVG 7 and 7.5 free editions and was very happy.
Upgraded last week to version 8.
HW - Desktop with Intel E6550 CPU running at 2.4 GHz. 2GB RAM. 2 HD One internal 200GB and a 160GB USB disk for backups.
I have never managed to complete a single scan on my computer (not even on a single disk). I stoped the scan after 36 hours!!! each time I tried to run a scan, I had to kill the avgscanx.exe process after few hours (usually 12). It would take 100% CPU no matter what mode you choose to run the scan (slow, fast or auto)
Pop up screen from the online defender tool are too large, consume a lot of screen space and distracting.
This SW will be gone now.

Pros: ZERO - NONE- horrible
Cons: Yo name it!
out of 115 user reviews
No, not worth spending the money to upgrade
Pros: Unfortunately in my book there are none.
Cons: no other features are worth the investment
So far I have tested AVG against Avira, ZoneAlarm, Kaspersky and TrendMicro. AVG Free has equaled or surpassed the other Internet Security Suites.
What you use, you should once a month scan your system with Trend Micro's Free House Call. I advocate this free service by Trend Micro because it is simply thorough and a generous offer from this company. I have no affiliation with them, but to ask visitors to my site who think they are infected to run House Call before I do a remote assistance. It truly is a smart way to double-check your system for critters.
Updated on Oct 16, 2008AVG Free 8 is having a bit of problem with udpdates. This is world wide. I really like the program and stand behind my first review, but to expect an ocassional exlamation mark on your system tray Icon. The updates are not always successful on the first try. Still, the program will get the update eventually. You can also right click on the system tray Icon and manually update.

Nice surprise
Pros: Ease of use, improved user interface, runs light
Cons: tool bar is good but would rather have the option to exclude
out of 115 user reviews
Excellent - better than v7.5
Pros: slicker interface, better automatic update controls, includes anti-spyware, more customizable
Cons: Security bar and safe search (link scanner) - but these can be easily turned off
Much of the issue that many upgraders have is with the Security bar that installs itself in your browser. But, during the install you can UNcheck this feature and it won't install.
Also, the Link Scanner, aka Safe Search is another feature that can be annoying and slow down browsing. But after a while it speeds up again.
If you want to get rid of both these features after installing the program, you can do so inside the browser - Just disable the add-ons in options/tools section where you do such a thing.

No no for XP Service Pack 3
Pros: Decent User Interface
Cons: Tanked my system
When I reinstalled Windows XP, I installed AVG 7.5, and had no trouble. Problem is, 7.5 is no longer available (as of this writing on 6/1/08). So, now, it's a crap-shoot to hopefully find an anti-virus program that will work with SP3.
The thing is, I've had software and driver compatability issues before, but, sheee, nothing like that, nothing that forced me to have to reinstall my whole OS (I don't know if I could have used the Recovery Console as the PC I'm using now doesn't have it as part of its 'System Recovery' CD').
So, if you must have AVG 8.0, make sure you BACK UP EVERYTHING first, and prepare for the worst.

WILL BREAK YOUR PC!!!
Pros: None; if your pc doesn't run, the utility is useless
Cons: AVG 8, the whole thing
AVG 7 full system scan 1hr, AVG 8 full system scan 3+ hrs when it finished.
30% of daily scans crashed pc to blank screen then reboot with log files corrupted.
Scan was marking system locked files as warnings and with a slip of the mouse it attempted to remove them but crashed to blank screen and reboot.
Upon reboot windows would not start, tried to start in safe mode, no go, error + machine reboot.
Tried to repair installation from windows cd, nope, PC dead.
AVG 8 acts like sasser virus, to be thorough I placed affected HDD into another PC and ran scans for last two hours included the latest windows malicious software removal tool and the HDD comes up clean, no sasser, no infection.
AVG 8 is evil, at first it seems good, partly based on AVG's good reputation(I have been paying for AVG for 7+ years and loved it prior to AVG 8), and if the editors here had more time to evaluate it, they would not have been suckered into giving it the good marks they did.
Be warned, google AVG 8 problems, and if you still want to see for yourself, install it on an extra PC that you can afford to break.

Don't write off AVG V8.0 Free
Pros: TBA but please read comments below
Cons: TBA but please read comments below
That was until I came across a very positive article at http://grandstreamdreams.blogspot.com/2008/04/taming-avg-free-version-8.html
Whilst V8.0 obviously lacks some finesse in handling the process to disable unwanted features at installation, the appropriate info about how to do this is buried in the FAQ's....again not ideal but it is there and we all read FAQ's and readme files before installing an app don't we?
I have been a long time user of AVG Free and have always found it to be a solid and reliable product even though it does not score highly in some AV tests. Used in conjunction with products such as Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster and Spyware Ternminator as well as ocassional online scans at reputable sites I have had very limited problems with viruses and spyware on my systems over the years.
I am now about to install AVG V8.0 Free following the instructions in the link noted earler in this post.

Cons: Slow browser startup
out of 115 user reviews
How to take a good product and ruin it
Pros: Free (but still not worth it)
Cons: System slowdown, toolbar installation, incompatible with SpywareBlaster and Spybot immunization features, awful support
The most unpardonable, in my opinion, is that the product deems immunization registry keys from Spybot and SpywareBlaster as malware. If you allow the program to remove these keys, it also removes protection against those items in your browser.
Support is available only in the forum where discussion is discouraged, posts are deleted and replaced with a canned "start your own thread" response.
Avoid, avoid, avoid, especially since there are better products available such as Avira's AntiVir and Avast. You can get actual help in the support forums for these products as well.

Don't do it!
Pros: Real-time checking is good, BUT ...
Cons: Painfully S-L-O-W !
I have been a very happy user of AVG 7.0 free, then 7.5 free. Reading all the benefits of AVG 8.0 free, I thought I would try it. BIG MISTAKE!!
Had problems downloading from C/NET, <50k D/L. It aborted and had to be restarted twice. Went to AVG Free website - ~280k D/L. The program was ~45 Meg.
The good: It uninstalled the AVG 7.5, and installed itself without incident.
The BAD: Started the program ... that's when things went downhill.
1. Completely new user interface is very difficult to navigate through.
2. There are fewer adjustments from the defaults, and more difficult to get to.
3. Tried a system scan - took >70% longer than AVG 7.5.
(I prefer a FULL scan using ANY AV program, so both 7.5 & 8.0 were tested with full scan. That is my desired default.)
4. It yanked 2 programs, calling them malware. (they were NOT). Put one was in the vault, the other ??? GONE!
5. Office 2003, IE, OE Express, Firefox, --- EVERYTHING loaded and ran SLOW! It was painful. Thought I was on my old P-II-400!
6. The pop-ups that occurred during surfing over small things were very irritating. Intervention was required for every occurrence.
After 2 days, it was dump either the laptop, or the AVG 8.0 free. The laptop won. The program de-installation went without incident. WOW, my laptop was back at normal speed!! I reinstalled AVG 7.5 free, without incident, and the laptop was safe and useable again.
AVG had better keep AVG 7.5 free going until they repair 8.0. the resources 8.0 took made me wonder if I had installed another well-known AV program that's a resource hog, by mistake.
Conclusion: AVG has appeared to have gone the route of Vista, in that the program is painfully slow, poorer user interface, and significantly reduced adjustments. I honestly can NOT recommended this program.

Seems to be almost no options to configure
Pros: Dosnt seem to be intrusive

After AVG was gone the accounting software was lightning fast. AVG seems to be going the way of some other software developers (VISTA) of not allowing you to look under the hood anymore.

Needs lots of usability improvements!
Pros: covers many different venues for infection (web, links, IM, email, etc)
Cons: Poor interface - No documentation or support.
* There is NO documentation - so its difficult to understand what some of its tools actually do, much less to properly admin them.
* There's no help feature in the Apps - much less context sensitive help.
* The UI consists of one line blurbs about the products that pop-up when you click various icons and menus. The actual config setting are hidden in a popup that requires some exploring to find. There is no explaination of what the config settings mean or how they interact. You could be totally disabling any real protection and not know it.
* THERE IS NO SUPPORT - they've even un-listed their corporate phone number! No tech or sales phones, No Support/Issues docs, No forums or knowledgebase. They do offer email support (via webform only - so no direct email addresses). But I've sent three different emails and after two weeks have not recieved a reply to any of them.
