The biggest news with AVG Anti-Virus 8 is that it includes Linkscanner, a technology that actively blocks malicious content from Web sites that may have been hijacked or otherwise compromised. Also, antivirus, antispyware, and antirootkit preventions have been combined into one product. The new drive-by download protection combined with AVG's award winning effectiveness in blocking and removing antivirus and antispyware code is tempered only by its somewhat slow performance in CNET Labs benchmark tests. While individual applications loaded fast, scan and boot times trended toward the slow end.

Installation
We were able to download and install AVG Anti-Virus 8 on a Dell XPS machine running Windows XP SP2 with no difficulty and without rebooting. If you are upgrading from a previous version of AVG, you must uninstall that version first before installing version 8.0. AVG provides a fully functional 30-day trial. While installing, AVG asks one critical question: do you want to install the security toolbar? Since it's hard to say whether you want that, we recommend saying no. Although AVG recommends installation, we found that it installs a prominent search box with Yahoo as the default search engine, and little else. Even without the toolbar, we were still able to use the Linkscanner technology.

After installation, AVG walks you through seven steps:

  1. Screen one merely describes the wizard
  2. Screen two asks how often AVG should update itself
  3. Screen three asks if you want to report compromised Web sites to AVG
  4. Screen four asks if you want to use the Yahoo search as your Internet browser default (this is the second time you asked to adopt the Yahoo search engine; if you installed the security toolbar, you'll already have Yahoo on your browser via the toolbar)
  5. Screens five and six lets you to download updates
  6. The seventh step tells you that the seven-step process you've completed is just the first part.
We do not like the interface in AVG Anti-Virus 8. Although it is an improvement over the previous design, the right windowpane is too crowded with large icons. There are nine icons in all. Below each is a statement telling you if that feature is active. Clicking an icon will run either access additional information about that tool or run that specific scan.

The left windowpane includes only three options, Overview (the icon view in the right hand window), Computer Scanner, and Update Now. Computer Scanner has but one option, scan all. Update Now is equally opaque, mysteriously searching and downing something onto your PC.

A toolbar above these windows contains the advanced feature options.

Should you wish to remove AVG Anti-Virus 8, there is a removal option under All Programs. After a reboot, we found a handful of registry entries related to the free trial, and some empty directories in our system directory.

Features
The biggest addition to AVG Anti-Virus 8 is the inclusion of the Linkscanner technology, but the integration is less than optimal. Linkscanner, formerly from Exploit Prevention Labs, is known for its ability to block malicious content from Web sites.

For threat testing, we directed our browser to a site known to host malicious content. AVG Anti-Virus 8 did flag the site, however, our request for additional information about the threat produced a generic AVG virus encyclopedia page. With the standalone Linkscanner Pro package, it would tell us which exploit it found and it would produce a rich log archive so you can see which sites it said had malicious software. We couldn't find any of that within AVG Anti-virus 8.

We also tested the Linkscanner integration within AVG Anti-Virus 8 by visiting five current phishing Web sites listed on Phish Track. AVG reported none to be suspicious, although the default antiphishing protection in Firefox 2.0 did flag several sites.

Performance
AVG Anti-Virus 8 scored well in CNET Labs' performance tests and in third-party, independent antivirus testing using live viruses, although not always the top position. On the CNET iTunes test, AVG Anti-Virus 8 came in just 4 seconds above the test system at 272 seconds. On the CNET Microsoft Office test, AVG Anti-Virus 8 finished in 1,413 seconds. In a test scanning a single folder with compressed and media files, AVG Anti-Virus 8 completed it in 550 seconds. And in boot speed, AVG Anti-Virus 8 came in toward the slower end, with a fast 37.95 seconds. Click here to find out more about how we test Antivirus software.

In terms of protecting your PC, we refer readers to two leading independent antivirus testing organizations. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, gave AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 an Advanced rating (highest) for On Demand protection and Advanced Plus (highest) for heuristic protection, blocking 97 percent of the malicious code used in the test. Our second source of independent antivirus testing, CheckVir.com, ranked AVG Anti-Virus 7.5--the previous version--as one of five products to earn their Standard rating (highest) for identifying malicious software (the products were not tested for removal).

Support
AVG Technologies provides AVG Anti-Virus 8 customers with e-mail technical support within the program. Online, there are searchable FAQs with a handful of useful questions and answers, and there is a downloadable 124-page PDF users' manual that, unfortunately, lacks a comprehensive index. AVG doesn't provide telephone technical support , nor is there a free online user's forum for posting questions.

Conclusion
AVG Anti-Virus 8 is solid at finding and removing viruses and spyware as well as blocking Web threats. As for antiphishing, the product could be better at detecting newly active phishing sites. Also, we look for further improvements in performance, as well as more technical support options in future releases.

Huge Resource HOG

Pros: It is free and it updates itself. I did not get overt virus or malware activity while using it. I used it for several years, but I have gone onward and upward.

Cons: How does 13,000,000 page faults over 2 days strike you? And a usual commit charge of over 1,200,000? Further it took up to 12 hours to do a full scan on my 900GB (on 8 partitions). Forget Saturday nights and Sunday mornings using the computer!.

Review: Further after a full scan, then running Malwarebytes, it found 12 infections. Then ESET found for more after Malwarebytes finished the cleanup.
Basically AVG has become a resource/time hog which does not completely free one from worry. I don't think it does its job very well. And I do not recommend it any longer. It's a relief to have removed it, which went well, despite other reviewers' apparent problems.

My computer got a virus with this product.

Pros: I can't remember anything I liked about the product given that the negatives were so pronounced.

Cons: I got a computer virus even though I was running this program. Those pop ups were insane!

Review: There are much better products on the market. I used Avast for years with no virus or problems. I have Webroot now and it works great. I would recommend either product.

Hijacked my computer.

Pros: None this program is a virus in disguise

Cons: Hijacked my WHOLE computer. Internet will not work unless I have it installed. It worked before I installed it. Now when I uninstall it my Internet does not work unless it is installed. WILL NOT ALLOW INTERNET EXPLORER TO WORK.

Review: This program has completely hijacked my computer. I cannot download even the smallest documents from my e mail
Send It Global etc. Cannot connect to IE at all. It is completely blocked NO MATTER WHAT MY FIREWALL IS SET TO!
i HAVE TO END THE PROCESS JUST TO USE MY COMPUTER! AVG IS NOTHING MORE THAN A VIRUS DISGUISED AS AN ANTIVIRUS APPLICATION! PERIOD. IT DOES NOT FIND VIRUSES AT ALL.

DON'T INSTALL! YOU CAN'T REMOVE IT AND IT DOESN'T WORK!

Pros: it convinced me to get a better product. that's it.

Cons: there's no way i could fit the cons on this......but in a nutshell, this program is trash. please do not install this.

Review: this is basically spyware.........this program has never detected a single virus on my computer. the scans do not work, for one reason. and every time i log, it bugs me to update it, and the last time i did that, it messed everything up. i do it anyway, it doesn't work, and keeps annoying me with pop-ups to install updates. so i bought norton 360, scanned it, and found about 20 low level to high danger level viruses on my computer that avg never found, and it got rid of them immediately. it performs regular scans, without a problem, and my computer's safe. back to avg...........i try and uninstall it, it doesn't work, and it's still there, popping up, everyday, no exceptions. so i'm still trying to figure out how to remove it, so meanwhile, please don't install this.

AVG was asleep at it's post

Pros: I definitely got what I paid for.

Cons: I just spent $150 having my computer debugged after a nasty virus downloaded itself while AVG was suppose to be guarding my system.

Review: It is sometimes difficult to know for sure if an antivirus program is really protecting you or if you?ve just been lucky. In my case, my luck ran out because even with AVG ?working,? a very nasty virus downloaded itself to my system and it cost me $150 to have it removed. Not only was the virus able to download itself, but according to the technician, it also managed to completely disable AVG. To be fair, it also was able to get past Ad-Aware and its ?live protection? and hide from its cleaning and repair process , so it was a nasty little bugger.

But the bottom line for AVG is, it failed the test and failed badly. But, I guess I got what I paid for!

Nightmarish-Wasted hrs of my precious time

Pros: A fairly decent reputation of a long gone prior life

Cons: I tried it as a substitute for Mr. Dinosaur McAfee. Proved worse than McA. That must take some talent to rank behind McAfee. Even when OFF, it ate all my resources leading to overheating, crashes, reboot. Were the only things spent time wen I had it

Review: Even if I go w/o anti virus, not going to use this junk. They used to have a decent product long time ago. Not any more. I am using Avast. So far seems the very opposite of this thing -- which, btw, couldn't find anything but a few cookies.

Keeps your system clean, if you like long naps.

Pros: Installs easily.
The free version offers a lot for nothing.
Catches a lot of threats while browsing and receiving e-mails.

Cons: Slow as the day is long. The resident shield often locks up my computer when I opening programs, I end up turning it off, which somewhat defeats the purpose of having it in the first place.

Review: There are other free anti-virus out there, I'm gonna start looking for ones that don't give me time to make a sandwhich when I want to open fraps.

New update is lame.

Pros: AVG Free has always been more than adequate in protecting all of the computers in y home, better than most AV software that I have had to pay for.

Cons: It shut down my computer last night (15 may 2009) and forced it to restart in SAFE mode. When I rebooted, the AVG was uninstalled!!! When I tried to reinstall I received a pop-up advising that the file was "corrupt". SALES replied, not SUPPORT!

Review: If they do not resolve the issue by the end of today I am switching to another product. I have four computers in my home and I cannot afford to have them all go down with virus problems.

Two stars are too generous!

Pros: Installs fast.

Cons: It doesn't really work all the time.

Review: Recently downloaded the product and installed on my computer. I ran it and it found a couple of problems, nothing big. But it did not find the main one: Hacker Rootkit Trojan virus. I was getting the message to the effect: "Windows Vista cannot download updates..." "Windows Defender cannot download updates..." AND after installing, and rebooting, AVG 8.5: "AVG cannot download updates...". It took a free trojan remover, help from Microsoft and in the end Norton Antivirus 2009 to get rid of the problem... Norton AV 2009 is still on its 15 day trial. Need I say more?

Reviews infested with heavy viral marketing

Pros: dont use the product

Cons: dont use the product

Review: I used to work for a company that did viral marketing, this product has gone under SEVERE negative viral marketing by the reviews, It's painfully obvious.

Not all reviews are viral, nor does this mean the product is necessarily good, but don't trust the reviews, they are mostly forged, likely by a competing anti-virus company (you'd be surprised how often companies do this.)

A great antivirus and it's free

Pros: Easy installation, Free.

Cons: A bit slow to scan and heavy on resources

Review: I upgraded from V7.5 and installed it on my Dell Vista laptop and my Dell Vista Desktop, It seems a bit slow to scan and uses a lot of resources but it installs easily and works exactly as advertised for me, I am running IE8 on both machines and it loaded and installed without a hitch.

Shouldn't an Antivirus program be ANTI Virus??

Pros: It is Free

Cons: DOES NOT DO ITS INTENDED JOB

Review: SO....I get this email that fraudulent charges have been made on my Amex- I was like hmmmm, maybe I have a virus. Scanned with AVG- found nothing. I thought I will upgrade to 8.5 with internet security. So i go through the hassle of paying for it and then it won't install- spent two hours on work arounds.....no success. SO, i'm like what the heck am I paying money for when it won't install and there are obviously viruses on my pc????? I downloaded avast free virus scanner- it immediately identified my system was infected and prompted a reboot with system scan- found two win32 ctx viruses and a third, svc.exe, after the boot. AVG seriously let me down. I

A step down from AVG 7

Pros: I haven't found any yet.

Cons: Every time I scan, my hard drive actually _crashes_ and I get a blue screen. This should not be happening, and it has never happened using any other virus scanning software in the past. My computer is not even a year old, it should not be troubled.

Review: I absolutely do not recommend getting this product; I recommend going to find a better virus protection software. So far I've had no success with it; even upgrading from AVG 7 was a hassle in itself. It freezes when it scans and stresses out the harddrive; the programming seems to be very shoddy.

Danger - 8.5 Messes Up System - DONT DOWNLOAD

Pros: old version i had was fine - used on a very regular basis. but no more

Cons: Norton antivirus went crazy after I downloaded 8.5/ dsound3dd.dll showed up on system. Had to remove in safe mode. IE faied to find any web sites with their toolbar installed. Uninstall and everything back to normal. beware spyware doctor also.

Review: I was truly disappointed and upset - when norton goes crazy - then you know the last thing loaded is the issue! I was also dissappointed with pc doctor - why - well when norton went crazy (o - and so did teatimer - which is part of spybot) I searched for info on the dsound3dd.dll and found a site that appears to have the answer to remove this particular virus. http://www.spywareremovalblog.com/remove-dsound3dddll/ for those who are interested. well turns out it downloads a huge program and will not do anything for you unless you buy the software. Id love to stop these sites from existing - its tactics like this that give the internet a bad name. Anyway it should be noted that everytime I opened up Internet Explorer - norton would pop up with a virus notice and when I would try searching - nothing would happen - would get the cant find the web site msg. so i trashed the entire package - I could search again - did the search for the dsound3dd.dll and removed in safe mode. Upon rebooting norton found another file that had to be removedf - some sort of backup??? that avg left behind during removal??? amazing... anyway whoever "owns" the code may want to consider looking at what is going on... and I hope no one considers using this package until it is made a bit more secure and also allows internet searches. It should also be noted I used the free version - maybe this is a way they want to encourage one to buy the supported version - which may actually work since you pay for it. Anyway I wasted many hours on this - Zone Alarm is free also - and it works..

DID NOT DELETE TROJANS

Pros: Generally good at identifying threats such as tracking cookies.

Cons: Just now, it found 2 trojan installers, and 6 trojans in a scan. It deleted the installers, but not the trojans! So for Spyware you're better off having a seperate malware scanner.

Review: Overall, pretty good, but don't rely on it totally.

Best Virus scan on the market hands down.

Pros: Quick installation
Blocks all harmful websites
Updates daily
Low on system resources compared to the competition
Works fine on Vista (don't listen to the Vista whiners who refuse to upgrade)

Cons: None its the best protection available!

Review: Best deal around for virus protection
It works what more can you say then that.

Dont waste your time with bloaded programs like Norton and McAfee which will make your computer unusable because they use so much resources.

Outstanding

Pros: Very easy to use.Easy setup.Easy on system resources.Does a very good job running alone or when I am browsing.

Cons: To many options. It's nice but could be confusing.I don't line the tool bar. The firewall can be just a bit annoying at times.

Review: I have it for 3 computers and it works great. I just upgraded to avg 8.5 with ID protection and it works good. I would recommenced this product, just uncheck the box marked add toolbar and let it run. I have it running on 1 XP machine and 2 vista home premium machines and there is not any problems with any of my computers.

DO NOT INSTALL THIS PIECE OF CRAP IT WILL RUIN YOUR PC!

Pros: i'm sure it' antiviruses :P

Cons: I work fixing pcs for a living, lately I'm getting a lot of pcs that are suffering from the black screen of death. In all cases, everyone had just uninstalled AVG from their pc, then once the computer restarts it just goes to a black screen.

Can't get rid of it.

Pros: It does an ok job for something that is free but really jams things up even after you have uninstalled it.

Cons: It has taken my months to figure out that AVG was the cause of my slow start up and freezing. I thought I had worn out my task manager.

Review: I don't understand why it is still here after I uninstalled it. I've gone into MS config and disabled some things and into control panel to stop other parts of it. I was determined to figure this out myself. I know several people who have taken their computers in to be repaired. This is costly and not right. It's bad when a solution becomes a problem.

Beware of AVG 8.0

Pros: AVG Anti-Virus software is a free download, free updating of its protection.

Cons: However, by updating to AVG 8.0, there're more problems than solutions as a email or software can be deleted without owner's knowledge.

Free version is CRAP

Pros: Interface and user-friendliness are up there, but that's it

Cons: Recurring errors and repeated fixing...it gets to you after a few times.

Review: Haven't used the paid version and probably won't now. Installed AVG 8 on two separate computers running Vista Home Premium. Worked fine for the first couple of months and then suddenly update manager wouldn't work on either unit because "CTF file was corrupted", then "connection to server failed". To make a long story short, I decided to run Norton on one computer and keep AVG on the other...and now I'm switching completely to Norton since these headaches don't exist. PS: Despite finding solutions on AVG help site, they keep returning, as if to taunt you for not buying the product. Give me a 4 month period free of hassles and I will pay you $100 to run it on an annual subscription.

AVG 8 Functions Fine

Pros: Problem-free performance with mulit-dimensional protection.

Cons: AVG needs Saturday customer service hours.

Review: Unlike NAV 2006, AVG has never presented me with system or update problems.AVG is not as much of a resource hog, either. AVG scans aren't any slower than NAV's. As to whether any security program is working, it's like the guy with the elephant gun in the middle of Manhattan. I haven't had virus trouble with either NAV or AVG.

Tryout Was Dismal

Pros: It didn't cost me anything to try it out

Cons: Couldn't type. The letters were going crazy. Sluggish performance. Used their default mode and updates.

Review: Loaded the free tryout on my desktop PC and my Vista, and after 2 days uninstalled it from both. I let the application set to it's own defaults and immediatley ran the updates. Worst of all - both my computers acted demonized. As I would type, the letters would change and scroll back and forth. I felt like someone was outside my house hacking me and playing with my head, but it was everytime I used the computers. Realizing that this problem hadn't started happening until I loaded this software, so I uninstalled it from both PCs and the problem immediatley went away. I wish these software companies would fix these problems before they release rather than making it into our nightmare to contend with.

AVG is worse than a virus-invaded and owns my machine

Pros: Five years ago I used AVG and my PC never even got a cold. Recently I purchased a laptop. I trusted AVG. I installed the free trial version, to buy the full version later. I must say NO VIRUS DARED. AVG stopped every download and page change.

Cons: I'm stuck with AVG. No uninstall.exe. Not on CP remove list. Tried uninstall utility. Wasn't found. It hides. It's all over my registry and services. Can't find how to remove it. AVG is criminal, this is no accident. Once you got AVG it has you!!

Review: When I started getting the sales pitch pop-ups from the free version warning me that I had 10 days left... 9 days left...8 days left to pay the AVG program, I began to get irritated. AVG was no longer my servant, at some point it began to run my life. It was impossible to change web pages, open email, or see any legitimate necessary pop-ups without this program pestering me for permission. I tried to set AVG?s paranoia level low to moderate. Nothing I tried made a difference. AVG reminded me of my ex-wife back when I told her I wanted to quit drinking. She started watching me like a hawk and scolding me until I began hiding beer in the toilet tank.

I got fed up and found another anti-spyware but AVG had taken over the role of firewall. I got the idea that AVG knew what my plan was (as if we were married and I found a new lover). AVG was my firewall and there was no obvious way to shut the free version down. AVG would not allow me to download "the other woman".

I was so frustrated, I went to the control panel to uninstall AVG while it wasn't looking. AVG WAS NOT LISTED IN MY WINDOWS UNINSTALL PROGRAMS LIST. Can you believe that?

This software was not going to beat me... I am, after all, a real living human being, with a college education and almost half my brain cells were intact. I went to the garage on the opposite end of the house from the computer room to formulate my strategy.

But really, that software can't beat me... all AVG is is a combination of digits. Ones and twos I'm told, just a bunch of switches, either on or off. And how many digits could AVG have? Even a million digits can't compare to the fabulous human brain. There has to be billions of neurons in this brain. How many neurons does AVG have? HA!! See what I mean? HA!

So that night while my Windows Vista Home premium OS was in hibernation and AVG was sound asleep, I tip-toed into the computer room and quickly booted up and prepared for a surprise attack. The way I figured it, hibernation would be quick to get the show going.

I anxiously anticipated the familiar spinning and whirring of the hard drive as I fumbled with the six letter password (AVG hadn't allowed me to turn that password feature off.. grrrr). Of course adrenaline was shooting through my system and my hands were shaking furiously. I had to try four times to get the six letters entered accurately. I had practiced this password for speed on an old electric typewriter the day before. I was scared.......

Too late... I could see by the little AVG icon in the task bar that the monster was awake and probably ready to do battle. Now what? I can't get to the control panel in time now.... not the way I'm shaking. I quickly grab for the wireless mouse but in my hurry it gets away and jumps to the floor. (AVG has subverted my loyal mouse during the night?)

If I had been thinking logically the previous day I would have created a short cut to the Window uninstall link on the desktop. It?s too late to think of that now. With my trembling fingers gripping the defiant mouse, I click Start, Control Panel and then I realize... I hadn't set the Control Panel icons to "classic view". I'm new to the Vista protocol, I can never remember which of the new icons has the uninstall feature. I click on "Systems and Maintenance". No, that's not the one... uh... which one next? Oh, there it is... right under my nose...."PROGRAMS"!!

I quickly glance at the stopwatch I had hung around my neck. I'm almost two minutes behind what I had envisioned. The uninstall feature is populating the programs now.... taking its sweet time too. OK. I look and look again... there is no icon for AVG. Drat!!! I blew it! AVG apparently had time to wake up and remove its icon from the list. Now what?

Plan B.... I was afraid of this, I have to go into Windows Explorer and do a search of the folders. The program files and then the drivers and the registry. I had used the library PC two days before to familiarize myself with the locations of security files. There in the library I had the privacy to take notes where all the AVG .exe, .dll, .sys, .ini, .cfg files reside.

One reason I'm going into such detail about this is to let everyone know, the AVG files and folders are everywhere and in the thousands. And some are not obviously named. That AVG program winds itself throughout your system and sometimes it hides. It assigns tasks and duties to itself that once it's ingrained in your system you may never get it loose. It's like thousands of roots snaking itself into every critical folder, critical, service and process. It snatches the originally installed file out by the throat and strangles it. THIS IS A FACT! If you have or ever had AVG installed on your computer do a search of your hard drive. You will be amazed...

I never did get rid of AVG. No file remover has been able to get rid of it. It still owns me. Take my word for it. This is a true story. DON'T BUY AVG!!!

I have used it for years

Pros: It is an excellent product.

Cons: I can't think of any

Review: I like it and recommend AVG Free to all my friends in place of Norton, which often does terrible things to their computer.

Haven't seen the mentioned problems

Pros: Superior virus protection

Cons: Nowhere near what I've read here. Occasionally slugish, dependant on time of day for updates.

Review: I have not experienced any of the of the problems indicated here. I have used this on multiple desktops and laptops. Other than the occasional slow download or unable to connect, I have had good experiences with AVG.

"When good products go bad"

Pros: - Good virus detection rates
- Easy installation and use

Cons: - False positives (most famously user32.dll causing Windows to crash)
- Updates require restart and will often cause AVG to misbehave
- Firewall is at best 'flakey'

Review: AVG used to be an excellent free anti-virus product. When i'm installing PC's at people's homes I alwas installed a copy of AVG. I liked the product so much that I also purchased the nework edition for the school network I manage and some webservers. This was a mistake that cost me dearly!

This is a list of some of the problems I have encountered with AVG:
- The famous false positive causing AVG to delete critical Windows files. Regular users can't easily fix this since Windows does not start at all.
- After updating and restarting AVG won't start at all and requires a reinstall.
- After an update the firewall defaults to 'Allow all traffic' on the server.
- For some reason the firewall settings can get corrupted causing the firewall to stop and also allow all traffic. This can be resolved by deleting a corrupted file.
- After an update and reboot the firewall defaults to 'Block all traffic'. This has given me a lot of problems with a server at a remote locaton. The only solution is to drive over to the server in question to manually fix the problem! With all the server downtime in between.

The worst part is the support Grisoft will give you. Their response is always the same generic answer that basically boils down to: Tough sh*t! You'll have to reinstall AVG.

AVG really isn't what it used to be, and the firewall is an admins worst nightmare.
I recommend you to think twice before installing AVG because the cost might be much higher than the benefit. And even the free version will cost you a lot in the long run.

Cleaned nasty STIs (Surf-transmitted-infections).

Pros: Fast, organized, thorough, non-intrusive, and free! THANKS AVG.

Cons: What is everybody complaining about? It's absolutely excellent and free. Cheapskates go PAY for Pete's sake.

Review: AVG cleaned every single attack right off my computer within a week from Pro-Anti-Virus 2009 and other pop-up spam hijackers, giving me several options first. I haven't had a single problem since. It could even identify the criminals making the attacks and put them in jail where they belong. It's fast and easy and automatically updates without slowing your computer or getting in the way. Ignore complainers who gave AVG less than four stars.

Sad. Updating simply stopped. Jammed up whole system

Pros: The obvious is that it's free and from a reputable company.

Cons: As to being "free", well I suppose that you get what you pay for, The company blew it on this one. What a wase of time. If this is the way the free edition works, no way do I want to even look at the paid version.

Review: 1. Even being "free", it's not worth the cost. It won't work.
2. If this is the way one of the products works, save me from their others.
3. The interface is confusing.

Problems at first, works fine every since.

Pros: Well... #1) It's free! I've never had a virus problem since using AVG and it uses an extremely simple interface. Won't ever pay for Anti-Virus software ever again.

Cons: I did have issues with it updating at first, but after awhile it was fine. Also, the design is a little old-fashioned, but who cares when it's free, right?

Review: Works great for a free program! Don't buy Norton unless you like to waste your $$.

A Great Anti Virus, as Always!

Pros: -Free
-Small Footprint
-Anti-Spyware
-E-Mail Scanner
-Scans files as you run them
-Frequent Updates
-Transparant

Cons: -Combersome compared to 7.5
-Some components required to run in background, even with the main application shut off
-Nagging upgrade notification
-A little slower than 7.5

Review: Although not a welcome change from 7.5, AVG Free is still very solid Antivirus (and Antispyware!) software. Its light footprint allows even the slow computers top-notch security, and no Windows computer should be without an Antivirus.

avoid this software!!

Pros: antirootkit, antivirus, and anstipyware, all comes in one.

Cons: aggressive updates, which is annoying.
excessive deletion of files, which kills other necessary programs.

Review: after i installed this junk, my laptop crashed a lot. it didn't let many programs run as normal. it slowed down the system. it blocked my wifi modem software from getting signal. it becomes over protective which it would delete all the files it doesn't like which are still necessary for other programs. i uninstalled this piece of junk and my life is back to normal again without all the headaches avg 8 has caused..

Unlike Everyone Else

Pros: Unlike everyone else I enjoy the new security AVG offers, I have 2 pc, 1 VISTA and one that came with VISTA but I downgraded to XP, i had trouble with AVG on vista but lets be honest its VISTA! don't blame AVG, blame Microsoft.

Cons: The only difference with this version of AVG if your computer illiterate then navigation might be tough it has more option now. It also take a bit more memory, but if your a computer freak with tons of memory then no problem.

Review: Over all awesome product I feel much safer with the new AVG format I feel that it delivers 360 degrees of protection I have the pro version, but even the free version which i tried before buying made me feel that I could surf the web without not to much worry.

Cons

Memory usage is all, and vista installation but as I mentioned its Vista, it has a tendency of messing everything up

Overall, great product.

Pros: Easy installation, easy to use, excellent detection. Received Advanced+ rating from AV-Comparatives (a non-biased independent tester of AV) in their on-demand comparative and a Advanced rating for their proactive test.

Cons: Slow scanning speed.

Review: The AVG 8.0 free version works great and is above all FREE! However, investing the money to acquire the paid version will be well worth it. It increases your overall protection with the anti-rootkit, safe surfing (protection from drive-by downloads), safe downloading and protection during instant messaging sessions. All of which are not made available with the free version.

All AV software is gonna miss some malware that other AVs will pick up. The best solution is to choose the AV that consistently receives excellent on-demand and proactive detection rates from non-profit AV evaluators.

I am currently running the AVG 8.0 free version on my computer at home (which is over 5 years old with 2.4 GHz processing speed and 512GB of ram) and have not noticed a heavy footprint at all. I am also running the AVG 8.0 Antivirus paid version at work (3.06 GHz and 1GB ram) and it does not slow down my system one bit. However, as I have mentioned its scanning speed is longer when compared to competitors, particularly on my home PC. My work computer completes scans much faster and is probably due to both the increased performance of the machine and because the paid version runs faster.

I recommend downloading the free version and if you like it after a week continue to get the paid trial version. Then, get the paid version when the trial runs out.

Great for people with a lot of free time on their hands

Pros: It looks ok...and they have a pretty website

Cons: The entire product really. After installation it all goes down like a lead balloon

Review: On first impressions, after reading a few reviews on AVG and using one of the free versions of AVG at one point myself, I thought that this software was going to be a pretty safe bet...how wrong could I have been!
After a fairly easy installation onto my machines I couldn't help but notice that they were running a bit slow, which in some ways, is acceptable at first as the software will continue to write new rules when it has first been installed. For the first few days I tried to ignore the slow performance and 'write it off' as the software 'settling in', instead I was more focused on what could possibly be effecting my internet connection, as all of a sudden, everything had become incredibly slow. After a few minutes of 'playing about' I found that turning the "Active Surf-Shield" off seemed to help a bit, and that even thinking about touching the "Search-Shield" button was a big no-no as this would cause my systems to throw fits of panic, locking up for a whilst before asking conformation, then spending a few minutes locked up again, at this point I would go and make a cup of tea and try to wait it out.
By the third day I'd realised that I'd spent most of my time waiting for the computer to catch up with what I was doing, and that I'd drunk through quite a few cartons of milk in the process (always a bad sign). At this point I was quite aggravated with the system performance constantly lagging behing and decided to see what options I could change to speed things up a bit.
From the main control panel I can...look at the icons and that?s about it. When AVG state you don't need to be a security wiz-kid to use their software they weren?t joking, because you can't use their software. The control panel basically tells you what you already know, what you have turned on, and what you have turned off. To get to the more 'meaty' options you have to try and navigate your way through the more complicated scary sounding "Advanced options".
After fiddling around with a few scanning setting and memory usage rights I had found that the software had dramatically improved, I could move the pointer on the screen smoothly, I could have more than three tabs on IE open at the same time...obviously not good enough. I don?t think people understand how slow, slow is when they read some of the available reviews, on my system it has taken twice as long (sometimes longer) to open a small word document or internet page
I would avoid this release; I would imagine it will leave you horribly disappointed...thank goodness for the 30day money back guarantee!

You'd be better off without virus protection

Pros: Installs easily in WinXP and Win2000 (only with NTFS), but that's it.

Cons: Slows system performance, gives allot of false positives and let's in all kind of viruses that never would've happened with ver 7.0 or 7.5.

Review: I trusted AVG completely until this version.. now I can't trust it at all. I switched over to NOD32 from ESET and am GLAD I did. A friend complained of some problems, so I took his hard drive and hooked it up externally to my pc. Ran a scan with NOD32 and it found 27 viruses that AVG had NO CLUE was there.

Customer support is unacceptable. Product has bugs.

Pros: Replaced Norton AV with AVG 8 because Norton seemed to be a resource hog. AVG 8 seems to work faster and bog down my system less compared to Norton. However, I had to disable the LinkChecker feature, because it slowed down browsing.

Cons: My PC would not boot in Safe Mode. It halted on AVG driver. Reported problem to customer service. Uninstalled AVG. Confirmed it WAS an AVG problem. Then, I could not reinstall using my paid license key. Customer support never again replied to emails.

Review: It seems that the product is OK, but AVG does prevent my PC from booting in Safe Mode. This could be a future problem. AVG offers no phone support, and their email support is erratic or non-existent. With this in mind, I would not recommend it. If there is any problem, you are stuck.

It's really Junk, I had to rebuild my machine

Pros: The pros are that AVG 7.5 was a really strong product.

Cons: But unfortunately they dropped the ball with 8.0
It majorly slows down the machine, I origionally installed AVG because NORTON was so slow, and used a big memory footprint, now this advantage is all but Gone.

Review: All i wanted was the live scanner to work as lightly and quickly as it did in 7.5

but now my 'kernel cpu usage" peeks just to copy a file.
I used to copy a 2gb movie from one hdd to the other in less than 30 seconds,
now it's like 45 minutes,
Only change was installing AVG 8.0

I'm not installing it again, until they come out and say they have fixed performance under XP SP2.

The world's 8th marvel

Pros: All-new interface
Seamless protection (Anti-Virus)
Fully equipped(Anti-Virus)
Fast & effective scanning
Powerful cleaning
Fast threat detection
Simple installation
Quick updates
Innovative ideas
Will not drag system down

Cons: Too good to be liked by "some" people

Review: I've been usinf AVG Anti-Virus for years now and the 8th version is simply the 8th marvel of the world. The new interface is fresh and still useful: All components at a glance. The installation is simple and quick. It took less than 10 minutes on my quite old computer. Scanning is quick, thorough and false-alarm free. The cleaning of threats is simple and traceless (I had some really tough viruses that the famous Nor*** antivirus cannot kill). Updating is quick and hassle-free. Like always, AVG protects you completely without slowing your computer down (I have a GENERIC (cannot identify) CPU and 256MB of RAM only). Only problem is, some people don't know how to use it (read the other reviews) and they say that it's bad. It really isn't. I don't think that I will ever use another antivirus.

NOTE: This review is for the Anti-Virus version ONLY. I have NOT used the IS for the firewall version.

Stops viruses, but...

Pros: Detects and eliminates viruses 100% of the time so far. The link scanner is a great addition. There is no repetitive renewal process every so many months like Avast which requires you to keep you key on hand. Did i mention the free part?

Cons: It's slower than a Molasses in January when trying to scan. It also takes up way too much memory for an average Joe's machine, especially if it is infected with Windows Vista.

Review: This has been an easy to install, easy to use, and very effective application. I have two gigs of memory, so the ram hog aspect of it has not been an issue for me. No user should ever have to pay for software, especially something critical like anti-virus. Free and easy. That is the bottom line on this one.

Pros: The promises [unfortunately not kept]

Cons: Installation of AVG 8 disables internet connections. To review the customer service website it is necessary to remove the software.

Cons: Slows internet and computer functions. Even after disabling many of the options, still made computer slow. It took Microsoft outlook 8 minutes to send a 15 k text file. Timed out several times while attempted to connect to router or internet.

Pros: uninstalled cleanly

Cons: totally trashed performance on a decent system

Review: I was pretty shocked at the performance degradation the AVG 8.0 brought to my 2.66GHz Intel Dual Core system with 4G of RAM.

As if a 50% in overall performance wasn't enough (could barely run 2 apps at once), AVG 8.0 actually slashed my broadband Internet performance by, I'm not kidding, 80%.

I could live with the firewall constantly resetting itself, and even the constant whining if I tried to turn off some features (those that allow it), if that would have improved performance, but no.

SPECTACULAR

Pros: Simple to use

Cons: None to report

Review: I have been using AVG for several years and have had no problems. I have Win XP, so can't speak for VISTA users. I had downloaded Avast and it made my system lag horribly. Tried it out on my work computer and same condition . . . lagging. My computer guy likes it and thought I would give it a try. Oh well, went back to AVG. After reading some negative reviews, these people aren't really saying what the problem is and AVG works in the background without any problems. I checked the email scanner after one review and found it to be set correctly to "heuristics" and not "auto-heal." I will continue to use AVG and recommend it highly!

Don not upgrade

Pros: The new UI is nicer

Cons: scan time, pop ups

Review: I join the reviewes of most people. This is the worst upgrade ever.

I have used AVG 7 and 7.5 free editions and was very happy.

Upgraded last week to version 8.

HW - Desktop with Intel E6550 CPU running at 2.4 GHz. 2GB RAM. 2 HD One internal 200GB and a 160GB USB disk for backups.

I have never managed to complete a single scan on my computer (not even on a single disk). I stoped the scan after 36 hours!!! each time I tried to run a scan, I had to kill the avgscanx.exe process after few hours (usually 12). It would take 100% CPU no matter what mode you choose to run the scan (slow, fast or auto)

Pop up screen from the online defender tool are too large, consume a lot of screen space and distracting.

This SW will be gone now.

For the past 6 years I never had a virus penetrate

Pros: Excellent; easy to use and update

Cons: Nothing I have found

Review: In my opinion the AVG Antivirus systems, made in the Chech republic by Grisoft are the top of the tops in that area of technology. This includes the adware, malware and all the wares. Their recent AVG8 series are superb. Their first edition had one or two glitches, but the second edition, which I am about to download, is the epidemy of the Anti-whatever products. I feel proud that when they were introduced on the American market, I saw their value and supported them.

Please Do Not Buy

Pros: I will let you know if and when they ever fix the issues

Cons: Too Slow - won't let you use IE!!! System crashes and web site delays until they time out.

Review: I sent several emails to support and sales. They do not have a phone number. I have yet to get a response. I am now emailing the executives and still have not received a response. I am very disappointed in their lack of customer service. I can uderstand having issues with a new release of software, but I cannot understand their deliberate ignoring of 1,000's of customers communications. I hope this note helps someone make the decision to NOT buy this product until/if they fix the issues at hand.

AV 8 a disaster

Pros: was once a good av program

Cons: Won't install

Review: Had 7.5 free version decided to upgrade to 8.0, bad move. Uninstalled 7.5, and tried to install 8.0, extracts files and says there is a previous version and can't install.

Used Windows uninstaller and Perfect Uninstaller, neither one finds any version of AVG installed.

What's worse I can't register to get on a forum to ask for help, apparently you need an installed version to register - the web site is useless.

I am going to buy a paid version of an antivirus program, it won't be from this company.

No, not worth spending the money to upgrade

Pros: Unfortunately in my book there are none.

Cons: no other features are worth the investment

Review: Stay with AVG Free 8 and do not upgrade to the pay-for version.

So far I have tested AVG against Avira, ZoneAlarm, Kaspersky and TrendMicro. AVG Free has equaled or surpassed the other Internet Security Suites.

What you use, you should once a month scan your system with Trend Micro's Free House Call. I advocate this free service by Trend Micro because it is simply thorough and a generous offer from this company. I have no affiliation with them, but to ask visitors to my site who think they are infected to run House Call before I do a remote assistance. It truly is a smart way to double-check your system for critters. :)

AVG Free 8 is having a bit of problem with udpdates. This is world wide. I really like the program and stand behind my first review, but to expect an ocassional exlamation mark on your system tray Icon. The updates are not always successful on the first try. Still, the program will get the update eventually. You can also right click on the system tray Icon and manually update.

Nice surprise

Pros: Ease of use, improved user interface, runs light

Cons: tool bar is good but would rather have the option to exclude

Review: The Avg V8 is a nice surprise. Having used the free version for several years and across versions 6 & 7 I have become acustomed to the Grisoft interface as well as the relatively easy user experience in comparision to other I have tried out. Version 8 is no let down in this respect and runs light on my laptop. All I need is an effective software that does not take up much space on my laptop. Grisoft AVG does this quite effectively in the new version 8 I purchased. I would recommend this to other like users that seek ease of use and a very effective software that has served me well across the several releases I have used it. Download was smooth and my 14 year old son downloaded it on his computer where I understand he had the same experience.

Excellent - better than v7.5

Pros: slicker interface, better automatic update controls, includes anti-spyware, more customizable

Cons: Security bar and safe search (link scanner) - but these can be easily turned off

Review: AVG Free version 8 is a vast improvement from the previous version 7.5.
Much of the issue that many upgraders have is with the Security bar that installs itself in your browser. But, during the install you can UNcheck this feature and it won't install.
Also, the Link Scanner, aka Safe Search is another feature that can be annoying and slow down browsing. But after a while it speeds up again.
If you want to get rid of both these features after installing the program, you can do so inside the browser - Just disable the add-ons in options/tools section where you do such a thing.

No no for XP Service Pack 3

Pros: Decent User Interface

Cons: Tanked my system

Review: I installed AVG 8.0 after installing XP Service Pack 3 (I had been using AVG 7.5 and AVG Anti-spyware successfully with SP 3). A couple of days after I installed AVG 8.0, I started losing icons, then user-mode services wouldn't start, then drivers and that was the end of that.

When I reinstalled Windows XP, I installed AVG 7.5, and had no trouble. Problem is, 7.5 is no longer available (as of this writing on 6/1/08). So, now, it's a crap-shoot to hopefully find an anti-virus program that will work with SP3.

The thing is, I've had software and driver compatability issues before, but, sheee, nothing like that, nothing that forced me to have to reinstall my whole OS (I don't know if I could have used the Recovery Console as the PC I'm using now doesn't have it as part of its 'System Recovery' CD').

So, if you must have AVG 8.0, make sure you BACK UP EVERYTHING first, and prepare for the worst.

No Problems

Pros: User interface is allot better

Cons: Having to install link scanner

Review: I have downloaded the Free AVG 8.0 in four computers and have had no problems at all. One thing I do recommend is uncheck the box to install the AVG security toolbar and also you can disable the link scanner in Internet Explorer by going to tools, manage add-on's, enable or disable add-on's and then disable Avgas Safe Search. I have done this and have not noticed any slow down at all. I also uninstalled AVG 7.5 before I installed 8.0.

It's free but I have an issue with linksearch...

Pros: Free antivirus and trojan protection with updates...

Cons: Slows Internet searches even on fast broadband connections...

Review: Had no choice but to upgrade to AVG 8.0 since 7.5 will not be supported after Aug 2008. New interface and smoother run. One major issue was the linksearch option that searches your google results for bad sites before you visit them and get infected. The searches took way to long and felt like a dial up connection. The results were easy to see with a green check indicating the site is safe. Turning off the feature left a red ! in the system bar. I also have an issue with cutting support for Win98 and Win2003 OS. Once 7.5 is phased out, you're left on your own and many have said they'll go to another brand.

WILL BREAK YOUR PC!!!

Pros: None; if your pc doesn't run, the utility is useless

Cons: AVG 8, the whole thing

Review: Link scanning and surf protection constantly crashing browser and/or making surfing like dial-up, had to disable them.
AVG 7 full system scan 1hr, AVG 8 full system scan 3+ hrs when it finished.
30% of daily scans crashed pc to blank screen then reboot with log files corrupted.
Scan was marking system locked files as warnings and with a slip of the mouse it attempted to remove them but crashed to blank screen and reboot.
Upon reboot windows would not start, tried to start in safe mode, no go, error + machine reboot.
Tried to repair installation from windows cd, nope, PC dead.
AVG 8 acts like sasser virus, to be thorough I placed affected HDD into another PC and ran scans for last two hours included the latest windows malicious software removal tool and the HDD comes up clean, no sasser, no infection.
AVG 8 is evil, at first it seems good, partly based on AVG's good reputation(I have been paying for AVG for 7+ years and loved it prior to AVG 8), and if the editors here had more time to evaluate it, they would not have been suckered into giving it the good marks they did.
Be warned, google AVG 8 problems, and if you still want to see for yourself, install it on an extra PC that you can afford to break.

Don't write off AVG V8.0 Free

Pros: TBA but please read comments below

Cons: TBA but please read comments below

Review: I was about to ditch my plans to update from AVG 7.5 Free to 8.0 Free based on many negative comments in forums and web posts.

That was until I came across a very positive article at http://grandstreamdreams.blogspot.com/2008/04/taming-avg-free-version-8.html

Whilst V8.0 obviously lacks some finesse in handling the process to disable unwanted features at installation, the appropriate info about how to do this is buried in the FAQ's....again not ideal but it is there and we all read FAQ's and readme files before installing an app don't we?

I have been a long time user of AVG Free and have always found it to be a solid and reliable product even though it does not score highly in some AV tests. Used in conjunction with products such as Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster and Spyware Ternminator as well as ocassional online scans at reputable sites I have had very limited problems with viruses and spyware on my systems over the years.

I am now about to install AVG V8.0 Free following the instructions in the link noted earler in this post.

How to take a good product and ruin it

Pros: Free (but still not worth it)

Cons: System slowdown, toolbar installation, incompatible with SpywareBlaster and Spybot immunization features, awful support

Review: This software will slow your computer to a crawl. There is no way to opt out of the installation of the antispyware component and they've sold out to Yahoo (installation includes the Yahoo toolbar unless you opt out).

The most unpardonable, in my opinion, is that the product deems immunization registry keys from Spybot and SpywareBlaster as malware. If you allow the program to remove these keys, it also removes protection against those items in your browser.

Support is available only in the forum where discussion is discouraged, posts are deleted and replaced with a canned "start your own thread" response.

Avoid, avoid, avoid, especially since there are better products available such as Avira's AntiVir and Avast. You can get actual help in the support forums for these products as well.

avg 8 is a dog

Pros: Nice looking interface

Cons: runs slow, uses too many resources

Review: Avg 7.5 was great with a capital "G". Version 8 is hands down a "dog". What is it that these companies want to "bundle" all the internet security stuff together? We have Spybot/Adaware etc. We don't need a bundle! Norton/Mcafee were dogs and way too agressive. AVG has become the same. Unless they change its off all of my P.C's at work including my servers. We are licensed for the Network edition with 10 clients and we pay. The older version was perfect. 8 is bad and slow on the p.c's I've tested. Scanning is atrocious. Went from 2.5 hours to 4.5 hours on the exact same P.C. Being an IT pro I think I can configure the software properly and the link scanner is bad. Resource hog. Who were their developers? The only good thing is he way the program looks. It looks like Vista and runs like it too. Poor and slow. Grisoft you are losing a customer! Programs and P.C.'s are about productivity and speed to get things done. If you cannot develop software that works with my life then you will not get my business. You conform to me, not me to you!

Performance nightmare

Pros: Very, very good protection package

Cons: Terrible, unacceptable performance!

Review: The AV itself is very good but the performance is a downright nightmare - absolutely not worth installing it at it's current state. Just viewing a folder that has a few EXE files will hang the PC for ~ 2-20 seconds or more which makes your even good machine useless. Give it several months until AVG fixes this issue. Version 7.5 is the way to go right now.

Not what you are used to.

Pros: Antivirus is where it needs to be.

Cons: Right out box problems with toolbar, run time and identifying spyware/adware and virus.

Review: After updating to 8.0 from the 7.5 version I was disapointed. The toolbar is useless, and interpretation of the program is a little complicated. I sent two e-mails and did receive answers. Bad experience!

Pros: It was free.

Cons: Crashed my computer big time.

Review: Downloaded free upgrade from AVG 7.5 to 8.0, installed the toolbar, updated and ran a scan which listed 180 "potentially dangerous objects." When clicked the "Remove Unhealed Files(?)" error message said "Could cause system to become unstable." Click on "No" brought up same message for I presume 2 of 180 individual items. Followed by error "Archive too small..." At that point, screen went blank and we're in uncommanded reboot. All previous settings gone-no wallpaper, no screen saver, desktop icons arrayed differently, one-click setting wiped, yadda
& cetera. Restored system to day previous, uninstalled AVG 8.0, reinstalled 7.5.

Don't do it!

Pros: Real-time checking is good, BUT ...

Cons: Painfully S-L-O-W !

Review: Hardware: IBM T40 laptop w/ XP Pro, 1G5 Pentium M, 1G RAM

I have been a very happy user of AVG 7.0 free, then 7.5 free. Reading all the benefits of AVG 8.0 free, I thought I would try it. BIG MISTAKE!!

Had problems downloading from C/NET, <50k D/L. It aborted and had to be restarted twice. Went to AVG Free website - ~280k D/L. The program was ~45 Meg.

The good: It uninstalled the AVG 7.5, and installed itself without incident.

The BAD: Started the program ... that's when things went downhill.

1. Completely new user interface is very difficult to navigate through.
2. There are fewer adjustments from the defaults, and more difficult to get to.
3. Tried a system scan - took >70% longer than AVG 7.5.
(I prefer a FULL scan using ANY AV program, so both 7.5 & 8.0 were tested with full scan. That is my desired default.)
4. It yanked 2 programs, calling them malware. (they were NOT). Put one was in the vault, the other ??? GONE!
5. Office 2003, IE, OE Express, Firefox, --- EVERYTHING loaded and ran SLOW! It was painful. Thought I was on my old P-II-400!
6. The pop-ups that occurred during surfing over small things were very irritating. Intervention was required for every occurrence.

After 2 days, it was dump either the laptop, or the AVG 8.0 free. The laptop won. The program de-installation went without incident. WOW, my laptop was back at normal speed!! I reinstalled AVG 7.5 free, without incident, and the laptop was safe and useable again.

AVG had better keep AVG 7.5 free going until they repair 8.0. the resources 8.0 took made me wonder if I had installed another well-known AV program that's a resource hog, by mistake.

Conclusion: AVG has appeared to have gone the route of Vista, in that the program is painfully slow, poorer user interface, and significantly reduced adjustments. I honestly can NOT recommended this program.

Beware upgrade to AVG 8.0

Pros: Thorough checking

Cons: Overly agressive deletion

Review: I have been a happy AVG user for a number of years. On upgrading to version 8.0, I ran a scan, and it found a virus in an email attachment (I am using the Thunderbird email client). I then noticed that it had deleted the entire email folder that contains the offending message. And I mean completely deleted, ie it wasn't in the virus vault. Needless to say, I went into the configuration and updated the settings to not "heal" anything automatically, but the damage was already done. The worst part is I suspect the offending message had been deleted earlier and I just hadn't compressed the email folder.

Stay Away From AVG 8!!

Pros: there is nothing positive about this product

Cons: If you have Vista watch out. The only fix AVG offers on their site does not work. If you use networking email like ATT; it will be rendered useless.

Review: AVG should be ashamed of its' self for not warning Vista users of the problem they have identified. If you can't trust your security company who can you trust? Even after uninstalling, issues remain in the registrary that still render Explorer useless with networking email; Firfox does work. STAY AWAY!!

Seems to be almost no options to configure

Pros: Dosnt seem to be intrusive

Cons: SLOW SLOW SLOW

Review: Installed on machine that does accounting on a network at the same time that I installed a new version of the accounting software. The accounting software became absurdly (unusably)slow. Worked with software tech support and determined it was a network issue. Was not able to find a way to temporarily disable any of the AVG features so only option was uninstall. That could only be done using AVG's own uninstall.
After AVG was gone the accounting software was lightning fast. AVG seems to be going the way of some other software developers (VISTA) of not allowing you to look under the hood anymore.

Much Better than 7.5 worth buying

Pros: Quicker, more features, easier to use, quicker to update.

Cons: Toolbar feature is pointless

And the yahoo toolbar things is pointless, but you can choose to not install it. I don’t understand some of the bad reviews its got I find it great, you can get better protection for the money, speaking of which I downloaded it for free from www.avg8.co.uk so you can always try it first.

why not offer rootkit detection separately?

Pros: 8.0 includes rootkit feature

Cons: Like most suites, 8.0 a hog

Review: So AVG teased me with the free rootkit detection, then bundled it into their all-in-one. I have yet to find any of these "suites" that is worth the hassles.

If AVG had put a reasonable price on the rootkit detection software, I would have bought it as a stand-alone to be used at my choosing. But noooo, they have to take the path most traveled, like all the rest of the security corps.

Pros: nice interface thats it.

Cons: To many to list here

Review: I was running 7.5 antivirus on my laptop with visa. Decided to upgrade to 8.0 for free. What a mistake, I lost my wireless connection and dsl also. More hours of trouble shooting on my own, only to find out the add-on's they added to internet explorer with the yahoo tool bar was the problem. Even when I tried to disable the add-on’s and get rid of yahoo toolbar it didn’t help. By the end of the night I was getting a message that AVG 8.0 was missing a driver and email scanner was not working, what a mess. Once I deleted the program everything was find with internet explorer. As a long term user of AVG I was not a happy camper. Now running NOD32 3.0 smart security, very happy with it. Makes AVG 8.0 look like a second rate antivirus program.

What a shame, as it was such a good application!

Pros: I can't really think of any...

Cons: Virtuall everything!

Review: Used AVG for years as a licensed version. Fab little piece of software that did what it said on the pack. Tried upgrading to 8 and ended up with no internet connection and a v.slow PC. Technical support replied 'sorry we are unable to check all hardware/software configurations'. Uninstalled it and re-run 7.5, all fine now. Also, AVG8 *will* install the Yahoo bar, even if you select not during installation. In short, they lost the plot! Back to the drawing board please!

overpriced with poor performance and minimal support

Pros: supposedly good at finding virus infections

Cons: crashes outlook, slows IE7, poor tech support, very slow

Review: Unbearably slow, ties up system resources, frequently locks up (crashing outlook 2003) when CPU usage reaches 100% (dual core AMD w 2 MB ram), incompatible with numerous programs (Carbonite, Sana Security, Google Desktop, Personal Info keeper, etc.) mediocre tech support (you must fill in a web form and then wait at least 3-4 days for a response, that so far has been worthless). No phone support despite 24/7 tech support claim. This program was not ready for release. I was ripped off and they refuse to fix my problems on a timely basis or refund my money

Needs lots of usability improvements!

Pros: covers many different venues for infection (web, links, IM, email, etc)

Cons: Poor interface - No documentation or support.

Review: While highly rated for its ability to identify potential viruses, malware, ect., theirs major problems with AVGs usability.
* There is NO documentation - so its difficult to understand what some of its tools actually do, much less to properly admin them.
* There's no help feature in the Apps - much less context sensitive help.
* The UI consists of one line blurbs about the products that pop-up when you click various icons and menus. The actual config setting are hidden in a popup that requires some exploring to find. There is no explaination of what the config settings mean or how they interact. You could be totally disabling any real protection and not know it.
* THERE IS NO SUPPORT - they've even un-listed their corporate phone number! No tech or sales phones, No Support/Issues docs, No forums or knowledgebase. They do offer email support (via webform only - so no direct email addresses). But I've sent three different emails and after two weeks have not recieved a reply to any of them.
