"Don't do it!"
Pros: Real-time checking is good, BUT ...
Cons: Painfully S-L-O-W !
Summary: Hardware: IBM T40 laptop w/ XP Pro, 1G5 Pentium M, 1G RAM
I have been a very happy user of AVG 7.0 free, then 7.5 free. Reading all the benefits of AVG 8.0 free, I thought I would try it. BIG MISTAKE!!
Had problems downloading from C/NET, <50k D/L. It aborted and had to be restarted twice. Went to AVG Free website - ~280k D/L. The program was ~45 Meg.
The good: It uninstalled the AVG 7.5, and installed itself without incident.
The BAD: Started the program ... that's when things went downhill.
1. Completely new user interface is very difficult to navigate through.
2. There are fewer adjustments from the defaults, and more difficult to get to.
3. Tried a system scan - took >70% longer than AVG 7.5.
(I prefer a FULL scan using ANY AV program, so both 7.5 & 8.0 were tested with full scan. That is my desired default.)
4. It yanked 2 programs, calling them malware. (they were NOT). Put one was in the vault, the other ??? GONE!
5. Office 2003, IE, OE Express, Firefox, --- EVERYTHING loaded and ran SLOW! It was painful. Thought I was on my old P-II-400!
6. The pop-ups that occurred during surfing over small things were very irritating. Intervention was required for every occurrence.
After 2 days, it was dump either the laptop, or the AVG 8.0 free. The laptop won. The program de-installation went without incident. WOW, my laptop was back at normal speed!! I reinstalled AVG 7.5 free, without incident, and the laptop was safe and useable again.
AVG had better keep AVG 7.5 free going until they repair 8.0. the resources 8.0 took made me wonder if I had installed another well-known AV program that's a resource hog, by mistake.
Conclusion: AVG has appeared to have gone the route of Vista, in that the program is painfully slow, poorer user interface, and significantly reduced adjustments. I honestly can NOT recommended this program.

I actually Use AVG 0.8 On my lapptop, and I must say, it didn't make anything slower, disable anything, or make anything malfunction.
I find the interface easy, however I rarely need to use it, it provides Quick and easy Navigation, and tells you if a function is not working. The scans maybe slower because It may be scanning more of your Computer than before. You also my want to Defragment & Disc Clean It After Download Too. -
Now this is a good review.
Vista isn't half bad though once you put the time into customizing it. But, oi, what a train wreck, eh.

AVG Antivirus 8:
