CNET editors' review

  • Editors' Choice: No
  • Reviewed on: 09/26/2006
(Editor's note: The overall score for this product was increased on March 16, 2007, to reflect new antispyware test results.)

McAfee has redesigned its antivirus application, VirusScan Plus, to provide three security tools--antivirus, firewall, antispyware--plus a package of system performance utilities in one product. On the surface that sounds great, but the changes appear to be only cosmetic. Looking inside, we found that McAfee offers few new security tools and also runs several agents and services that could slow older PCs. And we're still not impressed with McAfee's own lackluster technical support package. For brand-name protection, this year we give the edge to Symantec, whose Norton Antivirus 2007 shows the most improvement over last year's product. However, we give our Editors' Choice to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0.

Setup
McAfee VirusScan Plus is available in retail stores and for download from the McAfee.com site. We found the setup from a download to be unnecessarily hard. For example, McAfee requires that you install its Download Center, then after the Download Center analyzes your system, you must indicate what product you want to download. But wait, there's more: the Download Center must now connect to the Internet and download the file, which for VirusScan Plus is in individual pieces--VirusScan, Personal Firewall, SiteAdvisor, and Security Center. On a wireless laptop, our initial download-and-installation process took about an hour. On a LAN connection, a second installation required only 10 minutes. What's interesting is that unlike other antivirus-and-firewall combos we've seen, McAfee VirusScan Plus doesn't require a reboot.

Once installed, McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 occupies 75MB of hard drive space--that's less than half the space required for Norton Antivirus 2007. Yet despite its small profile, McAfee actually runs more agents and services, consuming more system resources overall than Norton. Unlike Norton, which is strictly Windows XP, McAfee installs on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines.

If you should ever want to remove VirusScan Plus 2007, expect some hard work. First, you'll have to use the Windows Control Panel Add/Remove Programs panel to access an uninstall-like application that offers you the option to remove individual applications, should decide you, for example, that you want to keep the Site Advisor antisphishing tool. Twice, however, our install froze while uninstalling the VirusScan module; we had to terminate the uninstall process with the Windows Task Manager and restart the uninstall process to finish uninstalling the rest. Once the uninstall process did complete, and we rebooted our test system, McAfee left behind a mess. We had to delete individually several files within folders, along with several McAfee-specific registry keys--which is more than the average user should be required to do. By comparison, Norton Antivirus 2007 did a much better job cleaning up after itself, although it still was not ideal.

Interface
The initial Protection Center interface offers a left-hand navigation for all tools, with a right-hand window pane for system status. McAfee's left-hand navigation consists of two tables of contents, one that lists basic features and a second listing with more-advanced tools. We like that McAfee has blended its various tools so that the overall product feels like a whole rather than like several stand-alone applications repackaged. But unlike Symantec, which not only redesigned its look but also rewrote much of its underlying code, McAfee didn't rewrite much code; despite its look, McAfee VirusScan Plus feels heavy and clunky.

McAfee's redesigned Security Center remains a shameless way to sell product. For example, let's say something called Content Blocking is not installed and needs further attention. Rather than explain why a lack of content blocking could be bad, it links to the McAfee online store so that you can purchase a copy of McAfee Internet Security 2007. To be fair, Symantec sells stuff too, but at least with Norton Antivirus 2007 the Buy Now icon is tucked away in the upper-right corner of an otherwise information-filled screen.

Features
McAfee bills VirusScan Plus 2007 as its three-in-one security solution--antivirus, firewall, and antispyware--and we found that it does even more. Included within are system diagnostic tools to shred deleted files and defragment your hard drive; various network monitoring tools; and McAfee's own antisphishing tool, SiteAdvisor.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 builds on its antivirus technology by incorporating features from the now-discontinued McAfee Antispyware application, such as proactive protection from "Potentially Unwanted Programs" (a.k.a. spyware). Antivirus and spyware scans are performed simultaneously instead of serially. New in VirusScan Plus is SystemGuard, which monitors real-time changes to your PC, such as spyware installation, ActiveX installations, and new Start Up menu items. SystemGuard blocks these with an alert until you say otherwise. Also new is X-Ray for Windows, which is Mcafee's tool to detect and remove rootkits.

By also adding features from the now-discontinued McAfee Personal Firewall, McAfee VirusScan Plus can report network traffic information, as well as hook into McAfee's Hacker Watch global network to report port traffic worldwide (spikes are sometimes precursors to major attacks). This may be more than the average user wants, so these tools are hidden within the Advanced table of contents.

We like the fact that McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 also includes system performance utilities, such as McAfee's own file shredder and disk cache cleaner. What's missing from VirusScan Plus, however, is a tighter integration of all the tools around its central antivirus theme. For example, Norton has rebranded its firewall technology within Norton AntiVirus 2007 as Internet Worm Protection. McAfee has simply added a firewall to their antivirus application.

Performance
McAfee VirusScan Plus (even with its new firewall) improves its scores on our CNET Labs' performance tests over those of last year, except in our boot-time test. On our iTunes test, VirusScan Plus gained ground compared with last year, taking 196 seconds as opposed to 243 seconds last year. On our Sorensen Squeeze test, VirusScan Plus also improved, taking 329 seconds compared to 337 seconds last year. McAfee showed the most improvement with individual file scans, taking only 116 seconds this year as opposed to 368 seconds last year. But in terms of boot speed, McAfee lost the most ground, taking 88 seconds--the most of any antivirus product we tested; it took 62 seconds last year. To find out how we test, see CNET Labs' How we test: software: antivirus page.

We refer to test results from two leading independent antivirus testing organizations to determine how well a product will protect your PC. In the latest test results from AV-Comparatives.org, McAfee VirusScan 2006 earned an Advanced (second-highest) rating, catching 92 percent of all malware tested, and from CheckVir.com, McAfee VirusScan 2006 was one of eight products to earn its Standard (highest) rating.

For antispyware protection, McAfee VirusScan Plus scored above average among the antispyware apps we tested. In exclusive testing by CNET Labs, McAfee VirusScan Plus' active shields identified and blocked five out of eight spyware samples we attempted to install, missing a generic Trojan, Compare-prices.zip, JustFindIt toolbar, and Marketplace. For scanning and removing existing spyware samples, McAfee VirusScan Plus' caught six out of eight, missing Compare prices.zip and Clickpix. As for the removal itself, McAfee VirusScan Plus removed spyware residue in six out of eight cases, leaving traces of JustFindIt and Marketplace, placing it among the best at removal.

Support
McAfee has yet to work out the kinks in its technical support site, and unless you obtained your product through a vendor agreement, you'll have to go through McAfee for support. In order to get online technical support, for example, you need to choose a product. Not a problem, as long as you know that VirusScan Plus 2007 is called VirusScan 11 on the technical-support side of McAfee's site; most people won't know this but can probably guess it. Product-naming inconsistencies aside, the process is automated so that first you are presented with a series of likely FAQs and almost all involve problems with the Download Center. If none of these FAQs solves your problem, you're either invited to download an ActiveX component that will scan your system and program then contact a technical support person or you're presented with a list of free services (such as posting to a community forum, community-answered e-mail, or free online chat) and premium services (such as talking to a live technician, with prices ranging from $2.95 to $44.95 per minute per phone call). What's missing from the McAfee site are helpful online tutorials and manuals for download.

Conclusion
Although McAfee redesigned the look of its VirusScan product, we didn't find the feel to be much better over last year's offering. Despite some improvements in scan performance, McAfee might slow older PCs will all the services and processes it launches during a scan. And McAfee's own technical support could be better.

Absolutely disgusted. real rating = negative 10

Pros: None, nothing remotely worth mentioning.

Cons: Nag, nag, nag, It's a system resource hog, and even an uninstall doesn't completely get rid of it.

Review: Avoid like the plauge, don't use it at all. Use PC Decrappifier to completely uninstall it or otherwise the personal firewall component will still show up as running.

customer service is a joke!

Pros: I can't think of any

Cons: I never got what I paid for / just free 3 month service!

Review: After five downloads and to much of my time I still have only a trial version, and I did follow all instructions. I also informed McAfee that I would like my money refunded and nothen yet. Rip off artist

It slows the system down

Pros: It works and is easy to configure

Cons: Other than detecting viruses it is pretty terrible, resource hog

Review: I gave the program a "3" because it does work. However, it comes at a great cost.

On my PC boot time was consistently 2-3 minutes and I could never get below 750 megs of ram usage under XP (which is waaaay too much!).

I had been fiddling with settings for months trying to get this down and finally read these reviews here about how bad McAfee is. Well I uninstalled it and replaced it with Nod32. Now boot time is just a hair over 30 seconds and my ram usage is down to 450 megs which is great for a tablet PC.

How I discovered that McAfee was a problem with resources is that Outlook 2007 has been having a lot of problems lately and I finally tracked it down to McAfee. Support was useless at fixing the issue (Outlook 2007 would randomly stop responding for 2-3 minutes while McAfee scanned things). So did some research on the various ones leading to CNet and all the problems other have had. I also had my post deleted from McAfee's support site complaining about trying to get my problems fixed.

I still have 6 months left on my subscription, but lesson learned, don't bother with McAfee, they used to be pretty decent and cheap, but it such a poorly written program it really isn't even worth putting on your system. I use AVG free on one of my extra laptops and that is what I would recommend for a cheap solution before McAfee.

Since changing over I have also noticed a lot less hard disk thrashing. I thought this was due to windows desktop search, but it turns out that even on battery, McAfee likes to keep a lot of hard drive activity. Since dumping McAfee I can run basic operations on battery and the disk can sleep.

Bottom line, McAfee will keep viruses off your system, but the program is junk otherwise and will kill you system performance

Reinstallation was horrendous

Pros: Works well when you get it up and running.

Cons: Good luck getting it up and running.

Review: I recently reinstalled XP on my machine and was disappointed that I had to use McAfee's download manager to install something so crucial to my system. Then Security Center kept reporting that VirusScan was not installed properly and to install again. Repeat for 2 hours.

Finally I gave up and installed Trend Micro's PC-Cillin 07, which took about 15 minutes with no hitches. Disappointed.

Not sufficiently effective when tested against another

Pros: None that we could ascertain though we did try

Cons: Poor all round in our opinion but the competition for this product is fierce!

Review: We recently acquired four desktop computers and felt it necessary to load anti-virus ware. Because we had the time we ran McAfee Virus Scan Plus and then PC Doctor Anti-Virus. The McAfee failed to detect three infections which were discovered and disposed of by the PC Doctor Anti Virus. Needless to say the latter was one we went with and has proven flawless, inexpensive and the support offered by PCDoctor is excellent. We tried McAfee to see what they had to say and they never responded. Bad!

Advice From an IT Pro

Pros: NONE that I can think of

Cons: Read on for what you SHOULD do

Review: Folks, the bottom line is this. Norton is the WORST internet security around and McAfee is a close second, for many reasons both obvious and some not so. I'm going to tell you all two things.

1st: each time I fix a system with the above AV packages on it I ALWAYS have to pull off viruses.

2nd: If you want GOOD AV protection here are the names: NOD32, AVG, AVAST, Antivir. The first is paid but is the BEST the latter three are freeware and while not as good as NOD32, each blow Norton and McAfee off the map with performance. That's it! :) Happy computing

Worst Virus Ever

Pros: Can Be Uninstalled

Cons: Poor Support, Resource Intensive, Big Brother

Review: I'm not one to think that everyone is out to get me, but maybe this time it's justified. McAfee with a whopping 18% share of the Virus protection Software industry has decided, it needs to be the absolute authority on what's safe on the web. I'm sure at this point you?re thinking to yourself, that what's this guy crying about? I think the whole world should be worried after Mcafee released its Search Engine Safety Report. This in an apparent attempt to intimidate the Search Engines into accepting their results.http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9023220&intsrc=news_ts_head I always kind of set my level of fear gage based on history. I don't believe anyone will debate the fact, that history repeats itself. The company who is trying to force the search engines to accept it's site advisor results as authoritive, has a shady past. That's right folks, They're a bunch of crooks.http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/whitecollarcrime_blog/2006/01/mcafee_settles_.html

Remember all that money that folks lost in the tech bubble, well Mcafee was leading the pack in misleading, lying and stealing from it's share holders. I can hear you all out there now, saying that was so long ago. Well it seems that ever since then Mcafee has been stealing from the Stock Holders.http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2028241,00.asp Sure Heads did roll, but when does it end. If a company wants the search engines to enforce it's rating system on the world, don't you think that first it should quit breaking the law, and even if they don't, get better at it.

Now I'm sure we're to the point where you say, isn't it possible for the company to be crooked and not abuse it's power as the internet. Well I decided to check out how it works. It took me Two Minutes to become a site reviewer. Next I wanted to find out what a site reviewer does? So I went straight to the top, to see how the crack Mcafee Reviewer did their jobs. I ended up at reviewer Dean?s page. Not even Mcafee knows who he really is, because you don't have to provide that information when you join. The first thing I noticed was, he had 45 reviews a day. Wow I thought he must really work hard to review that many sites. Then I noticed that all of his reviews were cut and paste. Many were attacking products that compete against Mcafee or offer software at low prices. There was a post about a Trojan at a site, but when I clicked to read the review, Mcafee itself opened 30 windows on my computer and almost crashed it. I know I don't want dean shaping the Web, his agenda is obvious and dubious. To be number one, even if it means posting lies. Now let's talk about the technical aspects of the Mcafee software. I called in last week and it seems that Mcafee had downloaded a patch in their software that made it impossible to connect to the internet. Their solution was to give you an URL, where you could download the fix for their patch.

Let's not stop there. Mcafee is poorly engineered. It chews up even powerful computers. It's killed more computers, than small pox has killed people. Here's an example of poor design. McAfee scans data as it comes into the computer, and every time you open it there after. If it wasn't infected on the way in, when did it become infected? After it destroyed years of my emails, I sent the problem to Microsoft, and they informed me that the vendor Mcafee, was working on the problem. This was probably caused by my large number of emails and that Mcafee scans all those emails each time it opens Outlook. Anytime I see some one trying to take over the world, I get afraid. Especially if that company has repeatedly broke the law. Uses unfair business practices, and last but not least, is technically incompetent. Be afraid, Be very afraid.

In how many ways can you spell "Support Sucks"?

Pros: I didn't even get to install it

Cons: And the tech support/cust service was frustrating

Review: There's a known bug that prevents you from downloading this seamlessly AFTER purchase.

And the tech support webchat basically tells you to uninstall everything else you find useful (PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Registry MEchanic have been good to me).

And the customer service webchat asks you to call a telephone no. for a refund - open 8am-8pm CST - except that's a lie.

McAfee needs a flashlight and a mirror. Maybe some help even after that.

McAfee Technical Support is a Joke

Pros: Virus scanning is great

Cons: Quick Clean program is a pain

Review: Quick Clean is automatically set to run every month when you install Virus Scan. It kept deleting a necessary program so I contacted technical support to ask how to customize Quick Clean. After three techs, I still had no answer. They just continued to try and sell me on the other components of McAfee (SpamKiller, etc) which I've used before and won't install again because they jam up other programs. They finally admitted that they didn't know what to do.

The worst customer experience I have ever encountered with real consequences

Pros: absolutely none

Cons: A company that cannot or does not have the systems to legimately provide customer or technical support should not be the guardians of computer security.

Review: I have a very simple online set up ? a wireless router for the times I bring my office laptop home. I am sure many of you have the same. My router has a firewall ? my office VPN has God knows what ? and my personal laptop had McAfee. It took a fair amount of tweaking to get it all to work ? but it was. Until I complied with a McAfee pop up that I ?immediately? had to run an update?

That did it. I was not able to get online. Not a computer whiz or a teen ager ? but rather a marketing executive at a major internet company ? I called McAfee customer service. On Easter Sunday. For 4 calls, 3 hours, and $300. With no success. But a promise of a call from 2nd level tech support in 2-3 business days ? since the rep could not (would not) answer the request to arrange a time.

After the 2-3 business day passed ? I put a call back into McAfee? and got escalated to their customer service supervisor. At least they tried ?but they could not connect after a 20 minute wait time.

That evening I tried again from home ? and told that a 2nd tier customer service supervisor would have to call me back ? in 24-48 hours. I repeatedly asked if the tech support could call me back ? since I still cannot get online ? and she said no ? it would have to be customer support supervisor. I asked if that person would have the skills to help ? NO. Can they transfer me to 2nd level tech support ? NO. Can they give me the phone number of corporate headquarters ? NO.

I eventually tracked down a PR line for McAfee and let them know that I am a very unhappy customer and will write a review. For the last 2 days I have played telephone tag with someone I believe may be responding to that call. But in a last ditch effort to see if McAfee customer service has any ability to provide service I made my 5th call to get help. I should have received the callback they promised by last night. To date ? after 4 promises of a return phone call from customer service ? I have not received one.

The real life consequence of this ? I needed to check up on the filing of my taxes. And to file my state one. But with no protection ? I was concerned ? instead of relied on Norton.

While these events have been frustrating, ludicrous, and even expensive (my request for a refund is apparently also lost in their inability to manage systems) ? it does say to me that this is not the caliber of company that should be protecting my computer, my personal identity, my peace of mind. I would encourage any one reading this review to strongly consider this before buying any McAfee products.

Full Install SLOW

Pros: Nothing positive about this program

Cons: Had to uninstall some programs

Review: PC slower than dialup took 44 minutes to download 30 email messages on DSL. Removed all except Fire Wall and Anti-Virus programs now download over 50 emails in less than 30 seconds. Have used McAfee for over 5 years thinking about using other AntiVirus and Firewall programs. Very unhappy with McAfee.

Very Good Protection

Pros: Very Good Protection against hackers and viruses/malware

Cons: Takes up a lot of system resources

Review: This is a VERY GOOD Antivirus program, it is better than Norton 2007 in my opinion. However, if you do not have a lot of RAM GET THE 2006 Version, McAfee 2007 takes up much more system resources

More Than Just An Antivirus

Pros: Better than previous versions.Adds performance tools.

Cons: Slow at loading security satus and settings.

Review: Mcafee virus scan has Antivirus, Antispyware and firewall protection. Most antivirus don't provide this many modules. The new interface makes it easy nad simple to use.Great protection against malware and hackers. But the weird thing is that all Mcafee products take while to load security status and setting which is frustrating.Dosen't use that much memory if you 512 or more ram.

More protection at a price

Pros: Nice looking control panel

Cons: Slooooooow internet connectivity

Review: Too bad I upgraded to this product. Internet connectivity has been crippled by the SiteAdvisor option. Disabling it makes it somewhat better, but not much. I only have 512 of memory and have read that could be the reason. Buyer beware, if your computer is a few years old, you may have issues with this software.

Warning -- installation could lead to spyware infection

Pros: Older version, 10, was okay when it didn't include spyware and gave you an option to use another stand-alone program..

Cons: newer version, security center virus scan 11, automatically packages anti-spyware program without giving on download an option to remove its spwyare.

Review: The Mcaffee support is tolerable for online chat, expensive, hard to reach and not available 24/7 when you need it most. WARNING: DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR LOAD THE NEW VIRUS SCAN PACKAGE IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAM ALREADY ON YOUR SYSTEM. THE MCAFEE SCREW-THE-CUSTOMER ATTITUDE MEANS THEY DON'T WARN YOU ABOUT THIS CLEARLY BEFORE DOWNLOADING ON THEIR HOME PAGE. SO YOUR OLD SPYWARE PROGRAM, IF IT'S NOT PART OF MCAFEE'S EARLIER VERSION, WILL CREATE CONFLICTS, AND COULD LEAD TO SPYWARE/MALWARE INFECTION, WHICH HAPPENED ON MY PC WITHIN A DAY AFTER DOWNLOADING IT. The problem still isn't resolved.....
Updated
Mcafee's tech support is so awful -- and its download information so limited -- that what I thought was malware was just a dysfunctional error message telling me I couldn't access my startup file in msconfig.com...if I followed its instructions, I would have to had to up an administrator account to change my startup file -- and thus allowed unauthorized access to my system through the administrator system.
Solution: My tech support guy, for little more than the cost of phone tech support with McAfee itself, told me that both Norton and Mcafee resident programs significantly slow down computer because they check all programs you're using for viruses as you use them. And they conflict with existing, although better, spyware programs in some cases.

Instead, he said I could use the demo or free version of avast! (www.avast.com) that does a better job spotting viruses than Mcafee (although it checks for malware too, I think), then added the best spyware program, Spysweeper. As for firewall protection -- which this avast prodouct doesn't offer -- I've got a hardware firewall set-up so I can get by with the Windows Firwall....check ratings for firewalls at pcworld.com and cnet.com

He had to used Hijack this! and CCleaner programs to make sure McAfee was fully uninstalled.

Bottom-line : avoid it if you can, and get sophisticated help in uninstalling if you want a better program that won't rob your computer's resources.

Much Better than Norton 2007

Pros: Super fast installation,Runs smoothly even on older systems,Powerful engine,No stupid activation

Cons: No scanning progress UI, No updating progress UI, Main UI is too simple,Main UI doesnt come instantly, It cannot repair an infected file but can remove or quarantine it

Review: Well the first antiviurs software I used was Norton Antivirus 2001. I updated it every year with a newer version of Norton released. But I'm glad that I didnt buy NAV 2007 instead downloaded it from the internet. The problems started right from the installation. The installation is pathetically slow...with more emphasis to the UI than performance. I was unable to activate it online...I tried again and again but the phone activation window never showed up.I continued without activation. The next time I turned on my PC....the logon and startup took about 15-20 mins....the screen freezed many times due to 100% CPU usage. When I tried to uninstall it the progess bar froze forever...and then showed error.I tried to uninstall it in safe mode but it showed that I cant uninstall it in safe mode...how lame is that.I had to remove it completely by using NAV remover found on the Symantec site....then removed all the registry entries manually and left over non-working services usind command prompt...and deleted the temp and shared files and folders manually too.
This was the first time I used McAfee(2007)....I found out that the installation was perfect..my system started up faster than ever before....i used memory and CPU much much much less than Norton 2007.
The problem with McAfee is that it doesnt start instanly(takes about 5 sec)...its interface is too simple...for a user like me who is a little more computer knowlege.
It also doesnt have a GUI during scanning for viruses or while updating....It will only show you the end result when done.
What I like about McAfee 2007 is that it has a proper dual-way firewall including a internet access program list...which can be customised while Norton has a stupid internet worm protection which interferes with P2P apps and makes downloading a hell lot difficult. It also cannot repair an infected file....but dont worry quarantine is almost as good.
You I would definately recommend McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 over Norton AntiVirus 2007 by a large margin because all the downsides of McAfee VirusScan 2007 are cosmetic.
So dont go for the looks....go for performance.

A spectacular anti-virus

Pros: The best UI, potent engine, does not slow the computer, install and forget security, SiteAdvisor for free

Cons: Haven't found any thus far

Review: This is an excellent anti-virus! Installation was easy, maintenance is care free, the application does not slow the computer a tad, and you get McAfee's excellent anti-virus, good spyware protection, a two-way firewall, and the wonderful SiteAdvisor!

I highly recommend it.

Not all that bad! but not great either!

Pros: It does have alot of security options

Cons: anti virus takes to long to catch a virus or trojan

Review: Thru Comcast, McAfee is free, even support b/c they never charged me & I called them all hours of the night. C/Net members always complain about something slowing down their pc's, no matter what they've downloaded & I haven't seen my pc slow down yet w/ the same products. Two McAfee techs confessed that they don't use McAfee when I called b/c I almost lost 2 laps behind of McAfee not catching a trojan or virus

Not worth the disk they put it on

Pros: None that I can see

Cons: The whole software package.

Review: I too was forced to buy the upgrade. I bought this after using internet security because I found the privacy service useless...the 3 remaining products was what was on this disk and what I really needed. I had to reformat my the hard drive on my gateway, so I proceeded to load the software & then loaded this with no problems. It wasn't until I went up on the internet to update windows & such that my problems started. I discovered the firewall disables itself when it goes into screen saver....& doesn't enable itself (sometimes) unless you go back into active screen. Being on a cable modem, this left me vunerable for several hours & (you guessed it) multiple trojans made it in while I slept. What good is that! When I contacted Mc Afee, They gave me instructions to fix it but guess what! I have been denied axcess to my own software. Apparently the software is instructed to restart twice & then just stop on the 3rd time (like what engineer can up with that). I had so much on the machine, I reformated again, thinking it was my machine & the viruses that had disabled this option (always giving the benifit of the doubt) WRONG! After trying to change it immediatly after reload, nope! Then, it also flags Trojan hunter as malicious software (thought that was me too). I too have spent days on this & I'm taking this back for the 30 day money back guarentee. I'd like to know what happened. I switched to McAfee after Norton didn't find a virus & had great success with the last version for the past few years. Don't know what I'll get next but folks, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME & $$$. I give this a ZERO.

BEWARE!!!!

Pros: aaahh..uuuummm

Cons: The fastset way to get real, real, real slow.

Review: I clicked, I followed the instructions, and My computer has been crap ever since. I've needed to run connection diagnostics about a hundred times in three weeks. Can't stay online more than 20-30 mins.without getting cut off. It updates constantly and requires 100% of My CPU. My computer is only 1 year old; 1.5 gig ram, 1.6 Ghtz. celeron proc.
Toshiba laptop. It should NOT have trouble running this software. I'll admit, the possibility exists that it's not all mcafee's fault, but all My problems stem from the moment I took this "upgrade", and experience tells Me, the thing You just changed must be the source. Helpful comments would be GREATLY apprieciated

BAD software

Pros: When it works, you're protected

Cons: It's Bloatware with numerous things you don't need, but can't stop from running

Review: Find a nice freeware AV package and dump this beast. After downloading an update and rebooting, it suddenly decided that I can't access my internet connection anymore, and that I needed all sorts of additional software installed without asking. At the same time it corrupted the install so the useless Security Center would no longer even start, and best of all it wouldn't even uninstall in Safe Mode!

McAfee's website has an uninstall tool when things die, but even that didn't work properly and I ended up formatting and re-installing my system. Until they get some real support, and allow you to install ONLY what you need, avoid this piece of.....stuff at all costs.

AWFUL .. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Pros: NONE, ZERO,

Cons: Unstable, Incompatible, Resource hungry and unusable

Review: How McAfee can say this is an upgrade is beyond belief...

ABSOLUTEY TERRIBLE

User Rating: 2/10

Rubbish, dont buy it.

Pros: none that i could see.

Cons: My PC works like a dream without it.

Review: Ive used 2004 through to 2006 with no problems, 2007 has caused me hours of frustration. Since ive uninstalled it my pc is like a new machine. Iv'e now installed AVG.

User Rating: 2/10

It was a nightmare until I removed it.

Pros: It can be removed or at least most of it.

Cons: It is all con one great big McAfee con, don't get fooled.

Review: McAfee 2007 Yikes! (McAfee 2006 wasn't too bad.) I had a billion reminds from McAfee that my virus protection was out of date, I broke down and bought the McAfee 2007. To make a long story short, it kept telling me to re-install it every time I used the computer. Then after 5 hours over 2 days of trying installations every which way, I gave up and took that GARBAGE out of my poor machine. I have found other junk it left behind, hopefully I will be able to get all of the new virus called "McAfee" 2007 out of my computer. I have been violated.

Not worth the $10 I paid

Pros: Cheap (on sale for $10)

Cons: Slows computer to a crawl, and constantly identifies (but does not correct) buffer overflows, unknown networks, etc.

Review: This software slows my Athlon XP 1800 to a crawl, and constantly identifies an explorer buffer overflow, which I highly doubt is a real issue (computer consistently scans clean using multiple products, including McAfee). The chat support is completely useless (high school drop-outs, I think). You'll lose more productivity with this software running than you would just catching a virus.

Long time user switches to alternatives

Pros: Still a strong program with great detetction rates

Cons: It has become less friendly to technincal users and has crossed the line in system resource use

Review: I am a long time user of McAfee products. I switched from Norton way back becuase of it's intrusive and abudant registry entries and the affect it was having on my computer. McAfee was a logical alternative and I have been an advocate for others to use McAfee.
With the newest release (2007), I have had to pull it off my system due to massive slowdowns and as of yesterday, it actually caused my laptop to not startup properly. I am once again looking for good alternatives.

Terrible Product - Will Slow Your Computer to a Crawl

Pros: Absolutely None

Cons: Will take over your computer

Review: I had a very old version of McAfee and recently decided to upgrade. I bought this product, which was my first mistake. My second mistake was installing it.

It will slow your computer down to a crawl. You can't turn your computer on without it scanning this, downloading that, etc. I realize it's probably just doing it's job, but the software is so bloated and slows everything down so much, that you can't do anything else when it's operating.

Don't buy it if you don't want you computer to be taken over. Buy it if you have an hour or so each day where you can do something else while McAfree "protects" you from viruses and other junk that will slow your computer down and wreck havoc (kind of like what this product will do).

McAfee has a 30 day refund, which I will definately be using.

VirusScan 11 is virtually unusable

Pros: Historically reliable virus coverage

Cons: Version 11 slowed my PC to a crawl.

Review: After a forced "upgrade" to version 11, my PC became very sluggish. It took almost 2 minutes for Outlook Express to open. It took almost 20 seconds to open an IE window. After weeks of diagnosis, I finally discovered the cause was McAfee. I uninstalled and the problem went away. I loaded Norton AntiVirus instead and I am very happy (except for the year subscription I just paid McAfee for...)

Having trouble loading

Pros: it was cheaper than other virus protection programs

Cons: technical support is seriously lacking

Review: I bought the McAfee program after having trouble with another virus protection, hoping that a different program would help. I was never able to get it to load onto my computer. I received an error message saying, "Unable to setup windows frame, exiting..." I tried various ideas I found on the McAfee site, but found nothing helpful. I will be returing the McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 where I bought it and will be going with something better. It may be a cheaper program, but you get what you pay for here.

Absolute Rubbish.. This new release will be the end of McAfee

Pros: Pro's... NON

Cons: Con's... resource hungry, abysmal user interface, terrrible, terrible

Review: Having been a loyal customer to McAfee for over 8 years i was looking forward to the 2007 release...

BIG mistake...

After my encounter with McAfee 2007

If asked the question "what would you prefer" ... a Virus or McAfee Antivirus, I would seriously have to think about it.

Enough Said...
Updated
If like me you have been unfortunate enough to have purchased this software and cannot afford to buy an alternative try.. AVG Antivirus it is free and a damn sight better than McAfee

See my case before purchasing this product!!!!

Pros: Let you have a peace on mind with having a AV program in your computer

Cons: Slows down your computer's booting speed/hurt your computer software

Review: I purchased McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 at May and installed on my PC that running Norton Antivirus at that time (Feel that Norton is not that good + that my subscription is almost expired so change to another AV),but i really regret that i purchased this product! It hurts my computer a lot!!That's true...After i install this product,i need to wait for about 5 mins for my computer to boot....Even after i uninstalling it!!This make me spand an additional $60.00 to reformat my computer......Now am using Kaspersky....Not bad....+ price is damn cheap!!

Good but can be improved a lot

Pros: Easy Interface, Good detection, Fast loading

Cons: Slow scanning, less updates, AntiSpyware is a JOKE, Buggy

Review: I have switched to McAfee from Norton on my laptop and I found it to be better. It is mediocre but it is better than Norton. Utilizes more system resources than previous version but that does not mind if you have a fast computer.

I am not satisfied with AntiSpyware as it is a big JOKE.

Horrible resource consuming pig of a program.

Pros: Industry brand name

Cons: Debilated computer, little if no support

Review: Feeling that an industry front-runner would have all the kinks worked out I bought and installed McAfee's 2007 Total Protection Suite. My brand new Dell 420 1.2 GHz Core-Duo with 1.5 GB of RAM was brought to it's knees and set off on a slow crawl. The WIFI internet access was much more difficult to connect to and I had to reboot frequently. After uninstalling through Windows XP there were still large portions of the program left on my machine. I had to go to www.mcafee.com and download the "McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)" and run this to remove the final vestiges of the product. Don't waste your time. A program like this should be elegant, easy to use and functional. It was none of these.

No Viruses, No problems

Pros: Almost entirely automatic

Cons: Nags to add their firewall

Review: We used Norton at our church because it comes preinstalled on Dell computers. I was setting up a new computer and noticed it had a newer version of Norton that the others. I tried to update the older computers and Norton told me that our subscription only entitled us to the latest virus definitions not the newest version of Norton Anti Virus software. For that we need to pay extra. Not so with McAfee. If you subscribe you automatically get the latest software. Needless to say we are now using McAfee for all the computers at our church.

Used to be good, now AVOID it at all costs.

Pros: Nothing to recommend it.

Cons: No Way to turn it off. Sucks up cpu cycles. Support is a joke.

Review: After using McAfee AV for years, I have now removed it from my system after this latest "upgrade". My system slowed to a crawl, something I used to see with Norton and now McAfee has caught up.

There is no way to turn this off. Unbelieveable.

I couldn't even do a warm boot with it installed.

There is nothing to recommend this product. Avoid it unless you like having to deal with total frustration.

Their support site is a joke. There are less than 10 FAQs listed. No way to contact Tech Support. Their "Virtual Technician" is their answer. Another program loaded and run that makes sure every option is selected. Thanks. I really needed that.

This is so pathetic and frustrating. Now what do I use. I just want Viruses caught, not Big Brother taking over control of my computer.

It protects AND slows you down at the same time.

Pros: Great new face lift

Cons: Takes up WAY to much system resources

Review: I've been using McAfee for quite some time now and I have been very pleased with this product until they recently did their facelift.

All of a sudden now my PC takes longer to boot up (and it's an old system to begin with) and my webpages take forever to load. Even my brother, who has a new laptop, notices the slowness in performance.

When I check the processes that are running on my PC it shows that McAfee is at 40,000KB + on my Mem Usage. That's nuts. And I've noticed tha their support has really gone south since this whole cosmetic look thing happened.

I'm planning on canceling my subscription with McAfee or just let my subscription expire and go with another virus provide.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

Pros: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

Cons: SLOWS COMPUTER TO A CRAWL

Review: Do not, I repeat do not buy this product. After months of trying to get it to work I am giving up. I am now looking elsewhere. Just go to McAfee site and go to their forum to see all the trouble everyone is having. Their moderators will not tell you but I did get them to kinda admit what the problem is, I posted the following generic statement and asked if this sums it up and no one would answer me:
McAfee will not let us tell users how to switch back to 10. They also will not allow us to allow it to be posted here.

It can be done, but McAfee does not admit any culpability in disabling millions of computers across the U.S. by unleashing 11 before it was ready.

If this post is deleted, I will take that as apparently you weren't allowed to do that either. I would have e-mailed this to you, but you dont' have an email address

purchase 2007 all in one mcafee

Pros: there isnt one pro about this service except site advisor

Cons: after many hrs of tech support wether online or phone they could not get it to work

An incompatible Pig

Pros: Attempts to be comprehensive

Cons: Slow, Incompatible with other programs, poor configurability

Review: I have used McAfee VirusScan for several years. My previous version was 6 months out of date and there was not an upgrade available. I had been using ZoneAlarm firewall for years along with McAfee with no problem. I upgraded to VirusScan Plus even though I didn't need or want the Plus. It seemed to install OK and recognized that I had ZoneAlarm as my firewall; it took along time to load when you wanted to modify the configuration and configuring it not to pester you when you turned things off was not very straight forward. My boot up time went way up to about 5-6 minutes, and periodically my machine would slow down to a creep. I mean creep as in 30 seconds to move a window from point A to point B. McAfee would also crash regularly. I had upgraded ZoneAlarm, switched to IE 7 and gotten a satellite dish for my internet connection within the same week. I suspect that McAfee was conflicting with something else. I uninstalled and reinstalled the other new software and with McAfee installed my machine ran miserably, no matter what else I did. McAfee had 7 or 8 Processes running all the time, it used a huge percentage of CPU time, and memory all the time. I finally gave up and bought ZoneAlarms Virus package and my machine is running well. Maybe there was something else I could have done to get it to run well but I feel I should not have to jump through hoops just to get the product to work. I just called about my refund I they were good about it, but I will check my credit card to confirm it is processed. It was only after I ran into these issues that I started looking at online line reviews of the product. I found many others with these issues. Amazon reviews had this product at 1 star until they purged the reviews. Even now the reviews are poor but there are only 4 of them listed, last weekend there were many more than that.

Bad Version

Pros: With Features

Cons: Antivirus doesnt failed to start sometime

Review: I have been using Mcafee for the past 3 years, and always my first pick when it came to install on my friends' computers. This is the worst version I have seem so far. Since it came with my ISP so it is not an illegal copy, however it still take 10 mins for the program to check on my information (Ask for my password and User Name). After all these the program asked me to reboot which I did, but after the PC restarted Mcafee security center gave me this big fat X and tells me the VirusScan is not working and something is missing. I reintalled it like 3 times but still get the same result. At the beginning I though its my computer's problem so I rolled it back to the Ghost image, but again, same problem. Finally, I got the program installed in Safe Mode and everything seem to run fine and I got another problem. My computer ran so slow that it will take almost 20 seconds for Firefox to start. So I did what everybody does, disable things i dont need on the program, but this just pissed off Security Center, it is keep telling me that I am not protected even I turn off the alarms in options.
For those of who planning to upgrade, my suggestion is to skip it, or if you love Mcafee so much just wait forst two to three month untill they roll out an upgrade. For now I am just going to use the Mcafee Enterprise version I got from school
Updated
For you Mcafee staff who look at this for ideas on the next version. I sugggested you to keep your hands off Windows Security Center, if you really want to design a Mcafee Security Center, make it load faster and make it optional. Take your antivirus and security center apart.
Updated
I haven been keeping my eyes on this product since it disappointed me. After McAfee went on air and promised to fix the problem on update I came back and test it again. Be honest, it is better than the x.00 version but it still hug down my computer like hell. One thing that still bugs me is I can not turn off the antivirus in one click, instead I need to go into option and turn them off one by one. Maybe it is not a problem for most of the people but I usually install program with antivirus off to prevent those non-stop looping. McAfee got to catch up on the interface design, if you engineers from McAfee are listening, go learn something from Symantec

Save Yourself Some Major Aggravation

Pros: Not much.... like Site Advisor Part

Cons: Pretty much everything.

Review: I ditto everything acurban said with a couple of additions. I also spent 40-60 hours trying to get this thing to run. Every time I powere off PC when I turned it back on.. McAfee all Virus Scan, Firewall, Spyware, Site advisor, etc.. said problems occured. Try to fix said to reload software. Does nothing... so you try to remove program through control panel but wont let you.. freezes up.. try again.. and again... finally try to go into files (do search and delete) I am novice at this stuff. Wont let you delete system files. Finally got hold of a chat technician who sent me a program that deleted Mcafee from PC so I could reload software... but here is the kicker... he said my problem was that I had Internet Explorer 7.0 intstalled... there 2007 doesnt support that version.. gave me instructions in how to go in and remove it... and go down to IE version 6... only problem is that when you get ready to remove IE 7.2 it says are you sure?? you loaded all the following programs with using IE 7.2 and by downgrading to IE Version 6 good chance they wont work and you will have to reload them.... no fricking way. I got the free AVG..like others I got a 8 months left on first purchase of Mcafee virus scan.. and 11 months left on VS Plus 2007 (was cheaper buying whole bundle then paying for firewall and spyware addition) Anyway I guess I am just out the money.. because a Virus Scan business that keep up with IE changes with update patches scares the heck out of me. Hope this helps.

A genuine PIG!

Pros: regular updates

Cons: It consumes my system

Review: I get MaAfee free through my work, had to uninstall because I could not use my work station (p4 1.7GHz, 512MB RDRAM). It slowed to a craw at best, but usually just consumed my entire CPU. Now use AVG, and it does the job very well.

Much Improved Performance; More tightly integrated features; Uses less resources than before

Pros: Faster; Actually uses LESS system resources; features are more closely packed together making for a nice, tight, suite

Cons: Still not as fast as alternative security suites; Cant figure out how to disable automatic scanning :)

Review: I'm not sure what these other folks are complaining about (or what they are doing to their computers) since I have found this version of McAfee to the be much faster, utilizing less resources, than previous versions. Got it free from Comcast (came as part of the Security Suite). Installation was a breeze. Was up and running right away.

Keeps many of the same features as before, such as automatic updating (someone complained about it here...they probably didnt activate that feature) and enhances many other features.

Biggest plus is the use of LESS resources. Yes, I said LESS. I constantly monitor my Task Manager and Processes and since upgrading, have noticed that this version uses significantly less resources than before. This translates into an overall faster computer user experience. Scanning is somewhat slow but I scan with every available scanning option enabled. If I did just the really important ones I'm sure it would scan much faster.

Still trying to disable the automatic scanning feature but I havent really played with the software yet since it runs pretty much on its own with all important options enabled on its own right after install. Good for beginners who dont know how to do that stuff on their own.

All in all, I am very pleased with this version of McAfee. After using the last version I was ready to switch to another company if McAfee did not improve their security suite...doesnt look like I will be switching any time soon.

Mcafee 2007 is a HORRIBLE "upgrade"

Pros: NONE!! unless you like to see 100% CPU usage

Cons: wont work!! consumes 100% CPU, slows everything down, no internet

Review: I really hate to bad mouth anyone but I have wasted at least 80 hours since jul 30,when they FORCED a horrible "upgrade" on their customers. Since then,I have wasted so much time installing, tweaking settings, uninstalling it. DO NOT BUY THIS ONE!! It used 100% of your resources, you cant get on the internet, you cant open email. NOTHING!! I am a longtime customer and have just given up with almost a year of active subscriptions with Mcafee and went to another security suite instead. I am SO UPSET!! Save your money and time, try something else before Mcafee. Trust me, you'll be happier without the mess they forced down my throat. They can have my money if they want it hat bad. I'll consider a lesson learned.

User Rating: 8/10

Overall decent

Pros: Better spyware protection, no longer uses ActiveX and IE, Buffer Overflow protection, included Firewall, secure file shredder, and disk cleaner

Cons: Slightly slower performance, User Interface kind of confusing

Review: I think McAfee did a good job this year, finaly some noticeable changeS. 'S' as in plural, as in more than one finaly. The program is good, provides many more security tools and no more ActiveX and IE! Good to see a different looking User Interface this year too, although I found it a bit confusing at first. I like how it includes a firewall, now with a "Stealth" mode finaly, and a file shredding program. McAfee's keeping up with the times finaly, naturaly it's a little slower but I don't find it to affect overall performance too bad. My system specs: Windows XP SP2, 512MB RAM, 2.10GHz CPU.

User Rating: 2/10

What a flop.

Pros: Well it's mcafee, so hopefully it's decent at detecting viruses. That has yet to be seen.

Cons: Very slow loading, slows down computer, not worth the hassle

Review: Ok I'll start off with the specs of my system. It's a laptop running a 1.5ghz pentium m, 1.2gb of ram, and windows xp professional. I was previously running mcafee's antivirus 10 and firewall 7. It ran remarkably well, it was also easy on the system resources. Well I figured hey since it worked well VirusScan Plus 2007 would probably be even better. Bad idea. The installation was ok, it removed my previously installed software without any major hassle. However, once installed and the machine was rebooted, I opened mcafee's security center. It took ages to load, not to mention it caused my system to run extremely slow, and once it finally loaded, the user interface was very poorly designed. While the security center was loaded, the software then began to update itself...this basically brought everything I was doing on my laptop to a stand still. I'm sorry mcafee, I used to swear by your software, but I've got to give you the boot.

User Rating: 3/10

No good Mcafee

Pros: scans fast

Cons: sluggish like nortons

Review: i installed this with much anticipation as it has no active x updates like the red one i uninstalled it just as quick like mud this product slows system down like norton memory hog and the interfact is shocking rush job Im sticking with Trend Micro
