I installed per Symantec's instructions and it would not update properly. after listening to one hours worth of suggestions from symantec's indian customer service representative (CSR) (the CSR said the problem was my internet service provider), i called the sales department to complain/ they "fast tracked" me to another CSR from India who told me to uninstall and re-install NAV 2005. after not being able to uninstall program in windows, I was GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS to uninstall. the uninstall, however, deleted key registry keys which now require me to re-install windows XP on my computer. Simply put, FORGET SYMANTEC PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU CAN FORFEIT MANY DOLLARS IN REINSTALLATION TIME. SYMANTEC WOULD RATHER SEND YOU TO INDIA THAN FIX THEIR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. VALUE YOUR DOLLAR AND BUY SOME OTHER ANTI-VIRUS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!! I HOPE THEY SUBPOENA ME SO I CAN TESTIFY UNDER OATH ABOUT HOW THEIR PRODUCT SUCKS AND THEY DEFLECT THEIR PROBLEM TO HARD WORKING PERSONS SEVERAL THOUSAND MILES AWAY FROM THE UNITED STATES!!!

Resource hogby - June 18, 2003

This software hogs a great deal of system resources. Norton Internet Security 2003 loads slowly and the interfaces seem to take forever to appear. I was very satisfied with NIS 2000 and assumed 2003 would be an improvement. Unfortunately I was wrong. I did perform a proper install including removal of previous Norton software. I do not have any other unnecessary applications running when these problems occur. In addition to this speed penalty I have other problems as well. This software has a mind of it?s own, frequently ignoring my settings. For instance, I turned off outbound email checking. Norton 2003 checks anyway. A minor detail but this is illustrative of this software?s stubbornness. It does do a good job as a firewall and virus scanner. NIS 2000 did the same, except without the problems.

I purchased NIS 2003 on 5/31/03 and it worked great the first day. I did, of course, run the LiveUpdate. The next time I got on the PC it took forever to load and all the problems, that have been discussed here, happened. I checked the Symantic's web site and tried all the fixes they had for NIS. They did mention that NIS could be corrupted.I never thought it was the LiveUpdate. They have a form to send in for a refund but I decided to see if Sam's Club would take it back. I showed them what Symantec said could be the problem - corrupted. They refunded the full price. I purchased NAV 2003 and plan to download Zone Alarm. I used it before. I tried one of the fixes for the 6.04 patch but it didn't work and the second suggestion required me to uninsall NIS and reinstall. I didn't have the disc. I tried calling Symantec but their service was department wasn't taking any calls. What do people who paid for support do? It was a little hard to install at first because it messed up my Norton Anti-Virus that came with my Norton SytemWorks. After some self-troubleshooting I just reloaded Norton SystemWorks. Everything seems to work fine; there is a VERY MINOR slow down in speed, that's acceptable with any program that runs in the background. What was weird is that when I do the Symantec security check it had more holes and threats then before I loaded the program. BUT when I tested my computer with SHIELDSUP! and PORTPROBER (the programs CNET used to test the software) everything was stealth and covered. So, whatever. As far as the new update messing everything up; my computer is still running fine. I'm really interested in seeing how the visual tracker works...but I think the program is so secure I won't have a chance to use it. Overall, good program. I have no clue what everyone else is complaining about.

Do NOT let NIS 2003 download the currently offered LiveUpdate called Norton Internet Security Program Update -- it is Patch 6.04, which is known BY THE COMPANY to be screwing up people's systems. See Support Document ID:2003041114455436 on the Symantec site. And when you run LiveUpdate, deselect "Norton Internet Security Program Update" to avoid intaking this patch. They released it in April (2003) and had so many angry and messed-up customers that they pulled it off the server. But they've released it again as of June 3 (2003) although they do know that some customers are experiencing the same suite of issues (NIS won't reload when you reboot, everything slows down, you may have to reboot many times to get NIS enabled and protecting you, etc., as they describe in the Support Document). Do you want your security done by a company that's completely aware of the fact that it's slipping a mickey into your regular ongoing updates? If you've downloaded the 6.04 update, call them and tell them that's what's happened and they'll waive the support-call costs. Good luck.

(System: Athlon 1.2 gHz, 512MB, 30GHD, XP) Installation was okay and the program seemed to be "working" until I performed a AntiVirus Full System Scan. The first 10,000 files scanned fairly rapidly but then each file thereafter required an exponential increase in time to scan until it was taking almost a minute to scan a single file. The other problem occurs at random with my IE 6.0. The browser just simply crawls along at an impossible speed making it impossible to load a single web page. The Windows Task Manager states that the CPU usage is 100% in both scenarios. I have sent an online request for service from Norton today, but am not optimistic as this problem is not described in their "knowledge" database of FAQ and solutions.

Have been running NIS 2002 - Absolutely brilliant!!! Thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to this - huge mistake!!! It is supposed to allow you to overwrite the 2002 version - fat chance!!! After a complete removal of 2002 via its own uninstall and via the "add/remove" in control panel, it just would not load. I tried the on-line support - waste of time, you spend hours wading through articles only to find that none of them seem to address the earliest problem you might encounter - it simply will not load!!! I decided to pay the £18.00 charge to use the telephone support, only to find that after trying everything he could think of such as regedit and file search and delete (i.e 20 minutes worth) he said that he couldn't deal with it. He would arrange for somebody else to phone me Mon - Fri between 9am & 5pm, which is no use at all as I am at work!!! I have decided to try to stop the payment to them and get a refund on the product from my retailer, then reload the old 2002 version. As they say " the grass is always greener on the other side", apart from when you are talking about this load of rubbish!!!

Almost every program you download will have some small bug that can sometimes be avoided, but Norton Internet Security 2003's patch 6.04 unleashes chaos onto a perfectly working computer running Windows XP. After spending two full weeks optimizing my PC, installing all programs I desired, it took a small little norton patch to mess that all up. My computer began to run extremely slow, NIS wouldn't load. If only Symantec had ALERTED (alerted, not slip in a the problem in their support link) it's XP customers that the latest patch was flawed then they would have saved me many many hours of troubleshooting. It will be extremely hard for symantec to gain trust from those who have been affected by this, and their inability to come out and alert the users on the front page of symantec.com only prolongs their loss in credibility

But on 05-28-2003, after I updated and restarted, It freezed about 2 minites before I could operate my computer, and the firewall program couldn't be loaded either automatically or manually, and Ad blocking function became useless. I tried to reinstall, didn't help. I thought maybe the problem was caused by other programs, so I reinstall my XP. After 8 hours working for reinstalling XP and all other programs and backup, I updated Norton firewall again. I doomed, same situation happened again. I researched the internet to see if anyone had same situation like mine, I found a lot of people doomed by the last update. I also found the Support Document ID:2003041114455436 on the Symantec website, titled "Norton Internet Security 2003 does not load on reboot after applying the 6.04 patch using LiveUpdate", posted early of June, last modified on 06-10-2003. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/735050b77b1fcece88256bc7005c3bc6/d2150f0f5cb27e7488256d050076e7d1?OpenDocument click the line above may save you some time. After I followed the document to fix the problem, It only fixed the automatic-load part. It didn't fix the 2-minite freeze at the begining of booting process. And I also found that it didn't fix Ad blocking function. My conclusion is what causes this problem is still unknown by Symantec company. I suggest everyone not to use this product before Symantec has solved this problem.

Pros:
Cons:
Review:
The LiveUpdate Patch 6.04 is an incredible breakdown of faith with the customers, especially because Symantec has released it not once but twice -- knowing what the XP customers are going through with it, too. Maybe Krko works for the company or somethin? That little apology for Patch 6.04 won't wash. IF you can get back online at all with any security protection once you've downloaded 6.04, you'll find that the earlier-setting reconfiguration fix is the third and final option offered in their support document -- after you've tried pulling out all LiveUpdates (notice they DON'T tell you that when you reload the updates you need to de-select 6.04 or even that you CAN do that). And the 2nd option is trying to uninstall the entire Symantec program. 15 minutes? No, more like hours, maybe days, $30 support calls ... and what other valuable settings are you losing if you have to finally revert to an earlier configuration? There's no excuse for a security company doing this to its own customers. And where is the notification that they've had a problem? Why not let their customers know? Car companies are forced to make recalls when they find something dangerous that needs fixing on a model. Why not these creeps? Confess, Symantec. TELL your customers that you've unleashed a flaw on them. How about in one of those silly newsletters about viruses and things? Perfect place to say you've re-released the flawed Patch 6.04, and it's going to mess up customers' computers. Until Symantec comes clean with its customers, up-front and fast to avoid damage, it's not the kind of outfit you want "protecting" you.

With all of the negative reviews here, I was very reluctant to purchase this product. But I did buy it, and it works perfectly. I'm guessing that a lot of folks just inserted and CD and started the installation without reading the directions first - we all do it. So, I made sure that I uninstalled my other anti-virus software, firewall, etc. - anything that might conflict with Norton Internet Security. I also disabled all of the other programs running on my computer before installation (just as the instructions suggest). I'm very impressed with the amount of information the program gives the user about every imaginable "invasion" on your computer. My only complaint is about the so-called Spam Alert - it's a bit silly, in my opinion, because it does nothing other than insert the words "Spam Alert" in the subject line of potential spam in your inbox. Norton needs to at least give users the option of having spam automatically removed from the Inbox and placed in a "junk" mailbox for later viewing. To make things even better, there were three rebates available on this product when I bought it, which brought the price down to $0.

I unloaded a couple of programs then found it was the NIS 2003. I removed it, reinstalled 2002 and all is well, my CPU is at 10% with all apps running as normal. 1000 mHz, 512 mem should be sufficient for home use. Heresay is that Norton's is aware of the cpu hog issue but not fixing it..yet. It was stable, but slowed EVERYTHING down on the puter.

Pros:

Review:
I have NIS 2002. I bought NIS 2003 because it sounded like an improvement over 2002. I followed the installation instructions that came with the 2003 CD, but when I tried to install I kept getting an off-the wall error message, "Error 1325. MyDocs303 is not a valid short file name," and installation would terminate. After dutiful but unsuccessful searches of the knowledge bases of Symantec, Microsoft, and my pc manufacturer for the error message, I emailed Symantec Tech. Support. I was referred to multiple documents on how to uninstall 2002 and install 2003. When uninstall by the usual WinME methods didn't work, Tech Support told me to use their Rnav2003 and Rnis removal utilities. Big problems: 1. one document says run Rnav first, another says run Rnis first; 2.one document also has a disclaimer that, "The Rnis.exe removal utility is not supported. Symantec Technical Support cannot help you resolve any problems...from using Rnis.exe." I consider myself an advanced pc user, but this piece of software is the worst I've encountered in my 15 years of experience with personal pcs.

I have to say, having read many of the reviews of NIS2003 on this site, I put off buying it because it sounded like it was a load of rubbish. However, I finally bit the bullet and went for it and really can't understand what all those who've complained are on about? It downloaded, installed, set-up and worked without a hitch and appears to do exactly what Norton say it does! I can only assume that users who've had problems hadn't uninstalled other security software before installing NIS2003. By the way, I upgraded from Norton Antivirus 2000. My only criticism of Norton is their support - on a personal level it appears to be non-existent.

MONEY WELL SPENTby - March 29, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
On March 09/03, I upgraded to NIS 2003 from that of NIS 2002. Installation was a breeze and to date, I've have no complaints. NIS 2003 completely removes pop-up ads, banner ads and webpage advertisements from websites. It's expensive to purchase in Canada at $94.99 ($109.23 with tax) with a $45.00 mail-in rebate included, however, it's money well spent to have the highest level of protection while connected to the Internet. In the two weeks that I've been using NIS 2003, I've not had any problems. In terms of Technical Support, when I used NIS 2002 and required Technical Support, I always send an email and waited for a response or looked up answers to my problems via Symantec's FAQ's. Those of you who become frustrated over the fact that you don't get a response immediately when you send an email, take a pill and relax. Email is NOT instant in the sense that you expect a reply upon sending your email within minutes. If you have to wait a day or two to receive a repsonse, so what! Take into consideration that others before you have submitted queries that require a reply as well. If time is of the essence, take a few minutes to educate yourself by finding the answers to your queries in the FAQ's of Symantec and printing off that information for future reference. I've had my experiences using McAfee and I have this to say, "You pay for what you get." Symantec's slogan states: "The World's most TRUSTED AntiVirus Software", to which I agree with 100%. If all else fails you, then use the free firewalls and virus softwares found on the Internet. However, forewarned is foretold, your level of protection on the Internet is naught compared to the services that Symantec offers.

I've had Norton Internt Security 2003 for 72 hours now. It has already crashed twice forcing me to do reinstalls. It is unstable in terms of memory usage. Just setting idle it can vary between 10 MB and 60MB + doing nothing at all. LiveUpdate insists on redownloading updates I already have. The updates run on the order of 16MB+ taking forever on a dial-up. Support via free email is lethargic and usually misses the point. The support folks are clearly not literate in the language of their customer base.

Buyers Beware - Don't Expect Supportby - March 20, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I bought NIS and had problems with the email filtering right in the beginning, since Norton?s default configuration is not able to cope with ?Port 25 Blocking?. ?Port 25 Blocking? is a very common issue if you use a different email provider in addition to your ISP (McAfee handles it without a problem, allowing SMTP to be processed through port 80). Symantec?s customer support is a joke. I received the first two responses only after I complained about Symantec?s violation of its own support policy (response in 24-48 hours). In addition, support personnel are not skilled. After I was asked to submit an error log, I have not received any response at all. There are a lot of unreliable products on the market; however, Symantec?s beats it with immature products and insufficient customer support. Buyers beware!!!

Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I owned NIS 2002 and the subscription expired. I contemplated renewing the subscription or upgrade to 2003. Decided to upgrade after finding a deal in Amazon.com. In some way, I wished I hadn't upgrade. 2003 performance is worst than 2002. My desktop is a 1.8G Hz Pentium 4 with 512 MB memory running XP Home. I noticed the performance differences after installation. Not extremely bad, but enough to annoy me (~5 seconds more after logon). But most annoying is the stability of the product. 2002 never crashed on me after using it for nearly a year. 2003 crashed several times already, like if I start the browser before the program is fully initialized. Get weird messages like "virtual function calls". I've programmed in C++ for over 10 years, have no clue the purpose of this message and what could an end user do about it. Sometimes, the crash is so subtle that you wouldn't even know the personal firewall is not running. Only tell tale sign is the "globe icon" is not in your system tray. 2003 does have many new feature enhancements like auto setup of your Internet based applications. Ability to show you where your attackers came from based on the IP address. It is definitely a good product if you don't already have firewall and antivirus software. However, if you already own NIS 2002, I would not upgrade due to the performance and stability problems.

in Germany: Had NIS2003 installed on my Win XP and used live update. Afterwards system start took up to 5 minutes, my home banking was blocked, I was no more adminstrator and had big trouble to uninstall NIS. MS Outlook does not start internet connection when NIS is installed and lots of other unfriendly effects. There are now hundreds of complaints in the Symantec knowledge database, always answered with 'uninstall and reinstall NIS, do not use live update, you will hear in this forum when problem (common client?) is resolved'. This started somewhen in Jan2003 - no solution in sight, no further info when we can use live update again. This seems to be a problem silenced down - and when you don't believe: go to the German support site and read through the pages under 'Systemstart' or 'hochfahren'. Anybody there who can help me? The program is absolutely OK - when it works. Hence in spite of above problems and expecting a solution to this in near or far future I nevertheless will recommend NIS.

Not as good as Atguard used to be.by - March 10, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
A long time ago there was a program called Atguard, which was a firewall + adblocker. The software was clean, easy to use, easy to setup and worked well. Symantic bought rights to Atguard, and turned it into NIS. The clean useful interface was buried under a munge of extra buttons, but if you dig deep enough, you can still get to the old original Atguard settings. In general this software has worked well for me, but I did find one thing that *REALLY* upset me quite a bit. If you go to the web page settings, eventually you will find a list of strings and websites that NIS uses to block advertisements. Click on some of the sites, you will find that Symantic actually enabled ads from some sites, and not others. This is done sneakily and without your consent or permission. However, you can go through and disable all of the enabled ads. Once you do this, you'll find that your internet cruising is substantially improved. For the record, Symantic didn't develop, produce or even come up with the idea for this software. They simply bought out Atguard, added useless buttons to the interface, stealthily crippled quite a bit of the add blocking, and then stamped their name on the front box. - Old Timer

I had been using Zone Alarm pro before this and i still belive it is the Best but opted for the change cause i always had to shut it down when talking to someone using a messenger.. After installing NIS2003 it is always on and does a good job of protectic. Being a 24/7 irc user there are alot of attacks and it has stopped each and everyone just like Zone Alarm Pro. The pop up blocker is perfect just like Zone Alarms. Its been one week since i have been using this ... and has done a good Job for me. Worked great until I added (stupidly) an additional firewall at the recommendation of the technician who installed our cable internet service. System was very unstable, constant freezes. Uninstalled NIS 2003 to attempt a reinstall. Reinstall was interrupted by instability of system twice... Uninstalled other firewall and NIS 2003 and now NIS goes through the installation process, but is not installed. No files, no program, no icon... nothing. Not found anything about this on Web site, no response to e-mail tech support... Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Installer, tried installing in clean boot mode, tried installing from hard drive... Nothing works. Purchased produce 12-26-02 and it's already, for my purposes, obsolete. Even though NIS 2003 and the other firewall are no longer installed on the computer (using Windows Me), the computer continues to be unstable. Would like to know how to at least get it back to where it was before NIS 2003.

When my system began to slow down and act strangely, I decided to try NSW 2003. I immediately found out that I had 2 virus's in my system, something that the anti virus from SystemSuite did not even notice. NSW cleaned the virus attack up and made my system work great again. I also am using the NSW Internet Security, also with no problems. I am glad that I returned to Norton.

I regret my stupidity in not buying this product every year because my computer has been so fast now that I am using NIS 2003 that it leads me to the conclusion that I must have had a lot of viruses and/or worms that were slowing down my system. I've used this for 3 days now without a single hitch & my processor as well as internet have dramatically picked up speed I never thought I had. From now on I'm going to make a point of believing that viruses/worms can slow down a system and that the only way to protect oneself is with a top notch product. I've tried other products but I'm pretty sure they let viruses in because they didn't update regularly. I'm very happy about having bought this product & I would strongly recommend it to people using Windows XP.

The other day I bought McAfee Anti-Virus Home Edition 7.0. What followed was almost 24 hours straight online with McAfee Reps to try & and get the Firewall to work WITHOUT RESULT. I opted for a refund & bought NIS 2003. My computer is XP Home & I had just done a fresh install As well as SP1. I downloaded over DSL - perfect. I installed - again perfect!! Rebooted - set up everything to my liking and PERFECT!! My computer has always run slow for some strange reason. It would run fast for a few hours then go slow. Since installing NIS everything goes 50% faster. WHY??? I was only 2 hours on-line downloading a file from Imesh when a Norton message popped up saying it had intercepted and destroyed a worm!!! I get no pop-ups. LOVE the Trace Route!! LOVE the email checker - works perfectly!! Intercepts my credit card number if I try to send it via email WOW - this KICKS BUTT. Either you guys have too much other junk on your computer interfering with a smooth install or you have tweaked certain settings which prevent NIS from working i.e 8.3 name creation etc. ALL updates installed again perfectly!!! Q: What have I done right that you guys have not. If NIS is so buggy WHY is it working so fantastically for me even speeding up my computer because I'm not downloading viruses anymore. If NIS 2003 is faulty I should be having problems but on the contrary - ONLY SMOOTH SAILING!! So guys & gals get rid of all the junk on windows, do a fresh install & try again. I can only vouche for XP. I got this product for $40 (dirt cheap) & gave Support 10 because frankly speaking the product is SO good & COOL that I won't be needing any support. I spoke to 12 Reps at McAfees for FREE over a 15 hour period and NONE of them could solve my problem. I installed NIS 2003 & I am SUPER HAPPY 7 PROBLEM FREE!!!!

This is a follow up to a review I wrote eariler. Since uninstalling this product I still cannot connect to certain web sites if I connect from my home. If I connect from a different location I can connect to hp.com and adobe.com without a problem. This software did something that recognizes my home location and will not let me access certain important websites. I have contacted Symantec and after they gave me the usual canned response of uninstalling etc. they did acknowledge that even after it is removed this may be a problem. However they will not tell me what NIS did to my sysytem or how to correct my system so I can connect to those sites!!! What a company, they give you a 60 day return guarantee if you don't like the product and so if you return it and it has still messed up your system they will not tell you how to fix the problem. This after they acknowledge that their software did corrupt something that will not allow me to access certain sites. Amazing!!!!! Please read my earlier post. If you can help me please email me at luketic113@netscape.net

I had 2002, bought 2003. I experienced most of the same problems the other downers have experienced. 1. The program (shown as ccApp) locks up. 2. Click on the shortcut and it shows security/firewall is on. Yet the icon in the icon box has an X showing it's disabled. I can't even turn the security/firewall on or off without it locking up. 3. Interferes with Outlook. 4. FINALLY got it to uninstall. All this happened on a brand new Dell, P4 2.4, 256K, XP machine. C'mon Symantic, the program has major problems, FIX IT!!!

This product does pack some nice features however it is not woth the problems it causes. It is a huge resource hog to begin with. It would not allow me to access HP's website to update the drivers for my printer and my scanner and I did nothing to block them. I uninstalled the program and for some reason I now still cannot get to HP'S website. I keep getting a DNS error. I am not the first one to complain about this. The support is a joke. I had the product for two days and they want me to pay $30 to get this fixed!!! I was lucky, the store I purchased this from took it back without a problem. I however am stuck not being able to get to a website I need. What did this program attach itself to even after an uninstall that would cause this?? I went as far as deleting my network and reinstalling the tcp ip protocalls and that didn't even work. If anyone has a way to fix this so that I can finally get to HP's site please email me at luketic113@netscape.net.

Having used Norton products for years I just purchased Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition. What a mistake!!! One week later the program still will not allow me to connect to the internet. I was directed by Norton to re-install with a clean boot, restore firewall security settings, change the start up sequence to manual, etc. etc. all to no avail. In frustation I downloaded Zone Alarm and it worked like a charm first time. I am still waiting for Online Symantec support to respond to my problem with a solution. I have never been able to contact a real live person there yet. The online support is poorly organized and difficult to wade through to get to an "online" support person, however they are not really online--you just get to send them an e-mail "online" and then wait for a response a few days later. Don't buy this product! Read all the bad reviews on Amazon--all with the same story. I wish I had read them before I spent $$ on this lousy product.

I have been using NIS 2001, and thought the 2003 version would be a logical upgrade since the subscription was due to expire. After reading the comments here, I was concerned, but decided to go for it, since the comparable Mcafee product didn't list anything too exciting to warrant a change. Per the comments here I unstalled NIS 2001, rebooted and installed 2003. I can say I have not run into any problems. Configuration is a bit different, but no big issue. I do like the "alert tracker" that pops out to tell me exactly what is going on. I am using "verbose" alerting as well for this. That's about it. I haven't had any need for support, but find it odd to charge so much for what would be so little.

Uninstall looked to work, but only removes parts. Attempt to remove more, and find its still got its scripting installed into all monitored applications. Out of curiosity, I installed NIS 2003, but kept my ZoneAlarm Pro 3.1 intact. Jeez, NIS 2003 was a oain to tweak. It doesn't have the intuitive (read intelligent) interface that ZoneAlarm Pro has. I had to twist and turn NIS 2003 around so that I could visit even my own web site. It was a frustrating experience. Avoid this product. In the olden days, Peter Norton wrote very effective, very efficient apps that made him a legend in the history of personal computing. It may not be his fault but that of morons in Symantec who've been churning out rubbish that they call "software." Stay away from this one. Buy ZoneAlarm Pro instead.

I had no problems installing this product or getting it to work right out of the box. My XPPro did crash once after installation as I was fiddling around with the options at the same time Norton Anti-Virus was scanning my system. Don't know if this caused the crash but it's the reason for my rating=6 under the Stability catagory. The system was fine after the crash. Installation saw my 6 client home network and immediately configured all clients to allow internet access using the single cable modem connection already in place. Oddly, installation did not automatically enable the firewall protection --- I had to actually turn it on instead.

I just installed Norton Antivirus 2003 on my XP Pro machine (Compaq Presario), with cable modem, and it has been a total NIGHTMARE for the past 3 days. It seemed to install OK, but when I got into configuring, it kept saying two files were missing, and it wouldn't provide email protection. So I just uninstalled it. BIG mistake!!!! After uninstalling it, I found my computer would NOT connect to the internet; I kept getting server-not-found errors. It can't renew the IP's, or anything, even though it indicates that it's "connected." The cable modem tech came out and spent an hour trying to get it to work, with no luck. I told him I had just uninstalled Norton Antivirus, and he said, "aha, THAT's it." He said Norton attaches itself to certain vital files, and if you uninstall it, those files get erased along with the Norton files. He said he had gone on many service calls where it turned out people had "mess up their computers with Norton." I tried re-installing Internet Explorer, and ended up re-installing the entire Windows XP package - not reformatting the hard drive, just replacing the whole XP package with a fresh new one. No luck. So tonight, I'm going to have to make massive backups, then reformat the hard drive and reinstall my entire system from scratch. What an incredible headache. I've had it. I will never, NEVER poison my computer with a Norton product again.

How come a big company like this comes up with such a rubbish product? Did they even bother to test it? Here's a typical example: you don't want to bother scanning outgoing emails (the whole thing is slow enough enough as it is, and anyway you shouldn't need to if the virus protection is working) but you can't switch this option off AND have Privacy Control enabled. How stupid is that? Did no-one notice this? Also, NIS 2003 slows everything down, even with most features disabled. It's very noticeable compared to NIS 2001 which I had before. Is it really necessary to have about 8 different Norton programs loading at startup when all I want is incoming email virus scanning and a firewall? Even the time it takes to access NIS 2003 itself, then hang around while it 'refreshes' itself, is excessive. What's more I now have a constant message 'System Status - Urgent Attention' showing, with 'Attention' next to NAV, yet under 'Detailed Status' there are no items at all requiring attention. And why are auto-protect and email scanning apprently duplicating the same task? This software is just too intrusive and cumbersome, and I won't be renewing my subscription - if I stick with it that long. I suggest CNET review their review.

Like others, I have run NIS 2001 with no problems and have viewed it as a very stable and useful product. After upgrading to Windows XP, I purchased NIS 2003 and my view has changed. Whilst not having the installation nightmares that others have experienced, I have encountered 2 problems. The first is with their common code module that clearly interferes with DirectX in some way and clashes with applications (including DXDiag itself!). Unload this module and all problems go away. Secondly, I cannot now send emails out of Outlook to multiple addressess without first disabling the firewall which renders it practically useless. Worst of all, however, is the level of customer service provided. Postings to their Newsgroup are taking upwards of 10 days to get any answer. When these answers come they normally involve de-installing and re-installing the software and do not go any way to the root cause which appears to be the 2003 software itself. Try to actually SPEAK to anyone and it is practically impossible. Like others, I am surprised that your reviewer has rated the product so highly. Its features on paper are admittedly impressive but get a problem and you can forget trying to fix it.. I am probably going to ask for a refund....

I could write a couple of pages on the problems and attempts to fix them after spending the last month going back and forth with tech support via e-mail. The bottom line is that in spite of a lot of effort, it was not possible to get a stable installation of both the firewall and antivirus software. Symantec sent me detailed instruction of how to remove all the Norton programs and debris (15 pages) because uninstall doesn't completely clean it out. After about 3 hours of clean up using three programs provided by Symantec tech support plus manual work, I had a clean and stable system again. It took only about 15 minutes to install McAfee antivirus/firewall v7 and get back on-line.

I can reinstall the nvidia drivers and it solves the problem until I do a hard power off and reboot. Very disappointed as I have wasted several days now rebuilding and narrowing down the problems with this buggy product. Symantec Tech Support suggested un-checking a "monitor program components" box in the Firewall settings, but this is not even set. I'm interested to see if other Nvidia Geforce2 users have the same problems...

NIS = Bootup Nightmaresby - November 2, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I suffered installation troubles seen in other reviews on this web site; then Windows (98 2nd Edition) won't start properly. Re-installing and countless hours of editing the registry haven't solved the problems. Even with all the Norton startup programs rem'ed out in the registry, booting Windows requires as many as six or seven attempts. (System boots fine when NIS is uninstalled.) Online support is useless; typical CYA responses of no value. Example: even after repeated installs and "live updates", two Norton programs (iamapp.exe and nisserv.exe) are MISSING. The online support people haven't even helped me get these programs! (Reinstall... right? Not again, please!) I refuse to pay for phone support, and am about to give up on this product. Simply not worth all the aggravation!

Read manuals, so many words that say so little. Thought I followed instructions (but later found contradictions and I unfortunately picked the wrong ones), but installation left system unable to run and unable to uninstall. Took 2 weeks and 3 letters to Symantec to get a suggestin that had merit. Had to use their 'removal tool' that warns you it is NOT supported and any damage to your machine is your problem not theirs. Even then, had to fix registry and remove files to eliminate bad installation. Finally after having the software for over a month, got it installed!!! It does work, is amazingly slow, and my system crashes much more frequently (freezes), doesn't shut down properly when I have to reboot, won't reboot automatically - I have to turn it off manually then on again. But, it does protect, the anti-virus component is excellent. After 1 week of use, still not sure if I will keep it or change. With a 60-day refund policy and 30 days of inability to use the system, I am frustrated. On-line help equally frustrating, many very useful help pages - if you know what to look for. But, queries to their on-line help gets you anwsers that have absolutely nothing to do with your query - I figure monkeys randomly selecting keystrokes could do better.

Review:
I'm running NIS 2003, and I must say that at first I thought of it as a wonderful product. It's been running for several hours now and oodles of problems are beginning to crop up. The first problem is that the vast majority of graphics on web pages simply do not load. NO options or settings changed by me. Lots of pretty red X's. Next, entire web sites are coming up as having no DNS (aka that they do not exist, which they do). To top this off, now I am totally unable to check my EMail. I turn off the EMail protect options and it does NO good. Regardless of what program I download and use, all POP3 access fails. From what I can make of it, NIS 2K3 is attempting to use its mail protection, without regard to its options, as it seems all EMail connections attempt to us a secure connection. However, NIS 2K3 fails to use its mail protection software so any and all attempts to download mail fails. Remember, I have changed no settings here folks. It seems like the only way that I'll get web pages back to normal, and be able to download my mail, is to remove this software. This is one software suite that's going out the Windows.

Review:
For source detail see the "Ask Symantec" item at: http://servicenews.symantec.com/cgi-bin/displayArticle.cgi?article=405&group=symantec.support.winnt.nis2003.general I cannot understand how the CNET reviewer gives this software such a high rating when Symantec now admits that it has serious OS compatibility issues. Apparently they include problems both with the most recent Win2K service pack (SP3) and with the built-in Dr Watson protection component of Win2K. In the latter case, they have actully recommended that users disable that OS component. The is hardly what I would call a useful "security" product -- let alone a reliable one. It certainly doesn't deserve an 8 (very good) rating. Your reviewer or someone at CNET should follow up on these issues with Symantec.

Symantec support has recently admitted that there is an "incompatibility issue with Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2003 and Dr. Watson Program". And there suggested remedy is that "you disable Dr. watson to resolve this issue". In other words, they want users to disable a fundalmental protection component of the Windows 2000 operating system in order to run their "security" software. In a word, NIS 2003 is horrible. I've been an NIS user since 2000, and, until now was happy with the product. The Live Update feature still doesn't work correctly after 3 clean installs. Also, any program that makes me, the paying customer, have to perform the work of a Symantec technician just to fix a buggy, software program that I just shelled out $60+ for isn't worth the effort. I'm also tired of Symantec's revenue generating annual subscription renewal scam. They bombard you with notices that your subscription is about to expire, and, after that, your live update never works the same again (i.e. until you upgrade or renew). Such a waste. I will not patronize them again!

The only thing I can login to MS Messenger is to turn the NIS 2003 completely off; i.e. no security!!! In addition to the worst user interface for a security product even for security experts! Norton Internet Security 2003 is STILL causing problems on my Compaq 550mhz Pent-III system. I upgraded to NIS 2003 from Norton Anti-Virus 2002 when my subscription ran out. But after it was installed, nothing on the program wanted to work and everything was "refreshing". Whenever I clicked on an option like personal firewall, the frame said "page can not be displayed". After trying many times to uninstall it, it turns out that you need to open the "supervisor" account in order to uninstall the software. Unfortunately, I never created a single user account, much less a supervisor one. So now I can't log in as the supervisor because I have no idea what the password is, and NIS 2003 has now started blocking access to some very common sites because they are classified as "news, sports or entertainment". I've contacted Symantec a few times, and they say this problem has occured to many people and that they will be sending me a patch to fix the problem so I can uninstall the software and receive my money back. That was 2 weeks ago and I have yet to hear from them. This product has been extremely frusterating, and I've had NAV for years with no problems. I'd recommend using the free Zone Alarm 3.0 as a firewall and NAV for your antivirus. Leave NIS 2003 on the shelf and avoid the problems!

I just installed ver. 2003 (on my XP machine) after removing ver 2002. Everything went without a hitch. I first thing I did was to read the manual from front to end (something many people want to do) and then I went to Symantec's website and checked their knowledge database for any issues related to installing/uninstalling previous NIS, NAV, NFW software and any other issues related to the software. I do this with every piece of software. You'd be amazed how much useful information is on their website. It just takes a little of your precious time. Of course we live in a society where people like things to be installed efficiently without having to read the manual. I though I would have problems with outlook express, netmeeting and MS messenger, but am sorry to say to those 41% who rated the product UNSAT that I didn't run into anything problems like they did. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you put more security restrictions on your inbound/outbound traffic, your internet connection slow down so don't complain. The old version didn't have parental controls, AD Blocking, etc so you probably noticed a difference in your internet connection. Nobody in my family uses my computer so I really don't use parental controls. Everyone is different. I've seen many complaints about users not being able to keep their old configurations. Ok..so that's a little problem and it takes an hour or two for some people to reconfigure their new software. If you keep a copy of your old config, it might take less time to set up the new software. If you're using XP like I do, the manual tells you to make sure you disable the internet security features on XP. I don't care what operating system you use--if you don't take the time prep your computer and do the research before you install a piece a software, you're going to get frustrated if things don't go your way. The only negative thing about this product is the $30 required to get Symantec on the phone if you run into a problem. I've been fortunate up this point and I been installing Symantec software on my computers for since 1994 and never had a problem.

I finally had to uninstall it AND Norton System Works 2003 and reinstall them both before I got it all to work. It sure was a pleasure wasting an entire day on this chain-yank. Symantec's tech support is the worst kind of bad joke. On the plus side, once I finally got everything up and running it seems (so far) to be dead stable and resistant to attacks.

Well it was a disapointment. You cannot install it on top of NIS 2002 and you cannot migrate rules. Apparently Symantec do not care about their users time invested in customizing the previous version. I hope Symantec developers have heard the word "upgrade" few times in their life. Well, at least installation on XP went smoothly and nothing bad happenned. The UI is much worse than in NIS 2002. Lots of thing are hidden many clicks away. I tried to use its "Users" feature but gave up when it refused to mark my wife's account (ordinary Windows user) as an "Adult". It claimed that the user does not have enough permissions to be an adult

Basically it requires all "Adult" users to be adminsitrators of the machine. If this is security then IIS is the most secure web server ever. From both NIS 2002 and NIS 2003 I make a conclusion that whoever develops this product has a very rudimentary (if at all) understanding of how Windows security works. They really should market it for 98/Me OS only instead of trying to sell it for 2000/XP users. Features: Good: log viewer is much improved, intruder tracer feature is nice, there is finally "Intrusion Detection" engine inside (though a very lame one), you can differentiate between policies when no one is logged in and when a user is working. Bad: statistics window is as awfull as it was in NIS 2002. And as a curious glitch it doesn't have my Outlook XP in its database of "known" applications with pre-defined policies. My conclusion that it doesn't worth the money I paid for it. I should have just purchase another year of NIS 2002 subscription.

Only problem I came across with the install is that the program did not appreciate that I already had Norton Antivirus (Corp Ed) previously installed. There was no obvious option to tell the program to ignore the current NAV and not install the 2003 version. There appeared to be no wording in the popup that let the installer know that by hitting "Cancel" at that point would allow the process to by-pass the NAV 2003 install/overwrite. I should not have to uninstall NAV 7.6.x (corp ed.) to install NAV 2003 and then reinstall NAV 7.6.x again. Instead of the control button stating "Cancel" it should have stated "Press Here to Bypass NAV 2003 installation"

Any software installation problem that requires me to (1)install using a "clean boot" procedure (2)edit the registry (3)use my emergency boot disk and (4)still not work after it tells me the installation was successful has some serious problems that should have been resolved prior to the release of the software. If you are still not sure if you should buy this product I suggest you check out the user forums at the Symantec website. You should also check out the average time to receive a response to problems (currently >2 days), and the type of response you receive (usually they are unable to duplicate your problem even though a check of the forum shows numerous people with the exact same issues). I would stay away from this specific product for awhile.

RegClean 4.1a (regestry cleaner) BootVis (XP boot time decreaser) AVG6 Free edition (free anti-virus software with e-mail scanning and heuristics) AnalogX Script Defender (prevents some malicious scripts from being run, like "vbs".) ZoneAlarm free (best software firewall around. nuff said) Jv16 system cleaner (system cleaner suite, free) That should keep you from having to buy norton. All above programs are FREEWARE, and I think that they are all available from download.com

Approach with Caution!by - October 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
NIS 2003 appears to have a number of installation issues that are causing serious problems for users. My experience and a review of the Symantec discussion board suggests that installation of NIS 2003 when a previous version of NIS is on their system can result in serious system instability. One example is the tendency of the program to install so called ?Parental Controls? without being prompted by the user and without prompting the user to establish an ?Administrator? account. Without Administrator rights, you cannot uninstall the program, change the way in which it functions or indeed ever turn it on and off. Installations of Norton Antivirus are also troubled, with the installation causing system crashes due to what the pop-up window says is a programming error. Added to this, Symantec tech support comes at a dear $30 a pop, so you may end up spending much more on support than on the program. The on-line resources posted by Symantec appear to be inadequate to handle the many issues users are reporting with this product.

very expensive product supportby - September 30, 2002

I have delt with many software manufactors regarding support help when I had a problem. When you have spent good money for a program and it costs you a high problem resolution fee to correct the problem you are trying to fix I don't think the company is worth doing business with.

It takes a while to set the levels of control that you desire and after that it is worry free. It is good however, to program it for auto updates and check its maintenance once in awhile to keep it certain on virus protection and free company updates.

If you feel like getting screwed, buy Norton...by - September 29, 2002
Pros:

First of all, what is this "feature" that Symantec removed that CNET liked? I can't find it in the corrections page? Secondly, I was this close to buying it, but when I remembered how ANY Norton product (except Ghost) poisons the registry, I backed of.. I'll stick to NOD and Agnitum..By the way, I tried McAfee Internet Security.. I had to reformat my hard drive and start over.. So much for C/NET's advice..

Better hope nothing goes wrongby - September 26, 2002

If something goes wrong during the installation or later on you can count on countless hours in front of your computer. Don't think you just have to uninstall it and install it back. It's damm near impossible to get rid of this software from your PC. The uninstaller leaves files on your drive and keys in the registry that produce the same problem you had before you reinstalled it. In other words: The same problems that software from Symantec has always created. You have to manually clean your drive and your registry to get rid of it before you reinstall it. No fun at all!

Networks Bewareby - September 26, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
This product is advertised as being able to serve as an all encompassing protection to home networks. However, I have found successful efforts by some advertisers to monitor activity using common backdoor techniques which were network intensive. Additonally if it is installed on a "multi login" pc all users must find a seperate login before some operations will be allowed. The present login is not tied to the OS login. The user will not even know why some of his normal pc actions are not functioning. Customer support was elusive and in addressing either of these concerns.

An excellent product at a reasonable price.by - September 26, 2002

A typical quality Norton package that does everything that I want it to do. It's a no-brainer to install and setup. Just pray that you solve all of your technical problems through the FAQs because you will pay big time if you have to use their tech support.

The Best Just Got Betterby - September 24, 2002
Pros:

The Best Just Got Better. Yes it does cost more than some, certainly not free but when only the best will do. I found it easy to set up and manage. New traces back feature is a neat feature. I tried Zone Alarm 3.0 pro but just didn't care for it. Internet Security comes with an Antivirus program (Norton Antivirus) which the freebies don?t include. Scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing email messages. With the automatic update it's the only way to go.

just can't trust Nortonby - September 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
Having struggled through Symantec products since good old SystemWorks 2001, I am just not sold on their products anymore. I have found better products for FREE in cnet.com's download site. Symantec is too heavy on your OS. For me FREE Zonealarm (v. 2.6) is effective enough or even FREE Sygate firewall. Before you buy Norton, try FREE products first. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Some great enhancementsby - September 24, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
The package has clearly had some work. Its privacy and ad blocking featues have had some very good enhacements made. The user interface however has had a downgrade. Alot of panes and sections now to make your way through where as under 2002 it was all centered on one screen. Other than that the package is worth the upgrade if your serious about security on your system. May i ask Bela L, the addon you referance. A link would be helpful. I have not been able to locate it on the website. Thanks.
