Entered CNET Catalog: 12/07/2002

SKU: PCZZWWEAXSBUPNNA

Manufacturer: Trend Micro

Manufacturer description

Protect your computer and PDA from viruses at home or on the go with PC-cillin 2003. PC-cillin combines advanced virus detection and cleaning with an integrated firewall to safeguard your system from hackers and malicious code threats in email and instant messaging, and while surfing the Internet. New features like Wi-Fi protection help secure your computer when connecting to a wireless LAN network, and Outbreak Alert gives you early warning about new viruses.

With its new 2003 version, Trend Micro's PC-cillin regains its rank among the top three antivirus programs on the market. Like Symantec McAfee VirusScan 7.0, PC-cillin provides fast virus scanning with little impact on overall PC performance. Its logical, efficient interface is easy to navigate, and the program delivers all the essential virus-busting tools you'd want, including e-mail and instant-message scanning, virus alerts via the Web, and the eradication of malevolent Java and ActiveX applets. Like McAfee and Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0, PC-cillin includes a firewall to prevent Net-based malcontents from breaking into your PC--an important feature not found in Norton AntiVirus. While PC-cillin suffers from a few minor glitches, it's an excellent choice for anyone seeking protection from rogue code. If you're new to PC-cillin, setup is simple: load the CD, click a few perfunctory Next buttons, and let the program do the rest. Upgrading, however, isn't quite so easy. To upgrade, you must uninstall PC-cillin 2002 (or earlier) before you load the new version, which is also a problem with other antivirus products we've reviewed. Thankfully, the program's personal firewall installs by default. This is good because it starts protecting your PC from intruders right from the get-go. Surprisingly, however, the WebTrap feature, which detects and destroys malevolent Java or ActiveX applets, is turned off by default. According to Trend Micro, most users say that they want it that way.

During installation, PC-cillin 2003 scans your system for viruses and other rogue code.

Antivirus amateurs will appreciate PC-cillin's thoughtful design and top-notch interface. Thanks to self-explanatory tabs and icons, the program is clutter-free and as easy to configure as the competition's apps. Also, like industry leaders Norton and McAfee, PC-cillin lets you run manual scans to examine individual folders--important on today's mammoth hard drives--and makes it a breeze to schedule weekly or monthly scans.

PC-cillin 2003 not only matches McAfee and Norton feature for feature, it offers a few neat tricks of its own. Like Norton AntiVirus and McAfee VirusScan, PC-cillin downloads virus pattern updates from its own servers. While automatic configuration is available, the default setting wisely lets you decide which option makes sense. PC-cillin then takes the update process a step further with its Outbreak Alert, which sends Red or Yellow alert pop-ups, depending on the importance of the update. Norton, by comparison, simply informs you that it's time to update your pattern files.

Like any good antivirus crusader, PC-cillin runs in the background and scans all file downloads from your e-mail, instant messenger, Web browser, or any other application. Like Norton and Panda, PC-cillin automatically cleans infected files, and if it can't clean a file, the software quarantines it, rendering it ineffective. You can, however, reconfigure PC-cillin to seek your input before it acts. PC-cillin also scans compressed files, as does Norton, but only after they're on your PC and you try to extract them. McAfee, on the other hand, scans a compressed file while you download it.

PC-cillin alerts you when it detects a virus. It seeks your input if it can't eradicate the troublemaker.

Like McAfee and Panda, PC-cillin includes an easy-to-configure firewall that's integrated nicely into the program's interface. Of lesser value is SiteTrap, a feature that lets you block users from accessing specific Web sites. While SiteTrap works with Internet Explorer, it doesn't work with the popular MSN Explorer, something that Trend Micro says it's working to fix.

PC-cillin follows antivirus protocol by offering one year of complimentary antivirus pattern files. After that, however, you'll have to pay $24.95 per year, which includes an upgrade to the latest version of the program. By comparison, both Norton and McAfee charge slightly less than $10 per year for pattern files but don't bundle a program upgrade with the deal. Frankly, we prefer the latter, less pricey approach and question Trend Micro's need to lock its customers into an annual program update, particularly if their current version is working fine.

In CNET Labs' tests, PC-cillin caused less of a drag on system performance than did McAfee, Norton, or Panda. However, McAfee remains the speed champ, scanning faster than any antivirus software product we've tested.

PC-cillin downloads and installs pattern file updates from the Internet.

To measure PC-cillin's impact on system performance, CNET Labs used BAPCo's SysMark2002, an industry-standard benchmark. The Internet Content Creation portion of SysMark measures a desktop's performance running off-the-shelf applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. (We did not run the Office Productivity portion of the benchmark because it incorporates McAfee VirusScan 5.13.)

Our test system was a Compaq Evo W4000 running Windows XP Professional, with an Intel P4 2.4GHz processor and 512MB DDR RAM. With PC-cillin running, our test system scored a remarkable 98--a mere 2 percent reduction in overall system speed. By comparison, McAfee scored a 97, or a 3 percent decrease; Norton AntiVirus 2003 scored a 95, a 5 percent reduction; and Panda scored a dismal 81, a whopping 19 percent slowdown. (An Internet Content Creation score of 100 represents the performance of our test system without any extraneous software running.) In a test of scanning speed, PC-cillin took an average of 2.1 minutes to scan a 1GB directory, which wasn't as fast as speed demon McAfee VirusScan 7.0, which averaged 1.7 minutes.

Test system Trend Micro PC-cillin 2003 McAfee VirusScan 7.0 Norton AntiVirus 2003 Panda Antivirus Platinum 7.0
SYSmark 2002 Internet Content Creation (ICC) score 318 313 307 303 258
Normalized score 100 98 97 95 81
Percent degradation N/A 2 3 5 19

Scan 1GB directory, average scan time (in minutes) N/A 2.1 1.7 3.1 3.1

To determine whether PC-cillin effectively blocks viruses, we gauged its performance in tests conducted by independent antivirus laboratories. In Virus Bulletin's tests with live viruses, PC-cillin earned the coveted VB 100 percent rating in three of its most recent Windows tests--a good showing certainly, but not on a par with Norton AntiVirus, which earned the title on six of its last six tests. In the back of the antivirus pack, McAfee passed only three of its last eight Windows tests, and Panda passed only once in its two Windows tests.

Previous versions of PC-cillin have been certified by the independent antivirus testing laboratories at
West Coast Checkmark, ICSA Labs, and AV-test.org.

For more details on how we test antivirus apps, see CNET Labs' site.

Trend Micro gets a gold star for being the only antivirus vendor to offer free phone support for one year. By comparison, both Symantec and McAfee charge hefty fees for phone support, and Panda doesn't offer the service at all. Even better, Trend Micro provides a toll-free number, so any hold time is on the company's dime. In our tests, wait times were typically less than 10 minutes and the company's support staff answered our queries accurately and politely.

Like its competitors, Trend Micro provides e-mail support. Its Web site has the usual collection of FAQs, virus definitions, and patch files but doesn't provide anything as slick as Symantec's wizardlike troubleshooter or McAfee's live support chat. But with a year of free phone support, we're not complaining.

Excellent product that plays well with other apps

Pros: Product does everything that it should, in the background. Firewall works well. Runs well with W2k and XP Pro. No problems

Cons: A little more configuration info for casual or VPN users to assist in setting up. Not a show stopper though since the Corp IT should be able to address any VPN issues

Good product, just ignore anti spam

Pros: Have used Trend for several years. It has always caught and cleaned/deleted incoming viruses, while other friends using other "big brand" virus protection were infected.

Cons: Anti Spam for email. It's not good. You create a whitelist of emails that you receive that are NOT spam. Doesn't matter, it will still mark them as spam over half of the time. You can change the setting to low security and it still does it. I have turned

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When I 1st bought this I couldn't connect online. The very first update fixes this and it works perfectly. Customer support has been back to me 3 times to see how I'm going. Real cool!! I keep having to check whether the Anti_Virus & Firewall are turned on because I can't believe the increase in speed of my computer and surfing since installing this and getting rid of Norton Internet Security 2003. I did a few tests on it and it intercepts viruses and trojans, scans very fast & doesn't hog system resources. I'm very happy with this and will be staying with Trend Micro for good.

Six months of POP3 problems is enough!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: PC-cillin came bundled with the software when I bought my Sony computer. Ever since I upgraded to 2003, however, I have had constant problems connecting to my POP3 server with PC-cillin's default "localhost" setting. I have been dealing with their Tech Support folks since January and have sent them numerous PC-cillin and Outlook log files. I've also performed every one of the troubleshooting exercises they asked me to. But the problem persists and I don't have the patience to deal with it anymore. I have requested a refund and plan to purchase another anti-virus program.

User Rating: 7/10

Very good for W9x users but other applications are better for NT based computers

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I highly recommend PC Cillin 2003 if you have a W9x/ME computer. I have been using it for about six months. It is very light on resources and scans fast on this type OS. I probably would not use it though on XP as I think there are better av's, but they are too slow and bloated for W9x systems or, like McAfee 7, they simply cripple internet explorer and/or Outlook Express. I tried many avs and I think PC Cillin is the best of all for W98x/ME. The trial ware is crippleware. That really ticked me off. For all intents and purposes, you cannot trial this av. That is a big drawback. PC Cillin is quite easy to use, has a nice GUI and updates very fast and in a simple manner which is a relief after the convoluted updates of NAV. I have never had any technical problems with updating. It is EXTREMELY nice to have free phone tech support. The techs are polite, attentive and take as much time as needed to try and solve your problem. Email support is poor in my experience and was very slow. I kept getting replies saying "your email has been read at such and such a time" and a few minutes later, a reply saying "your email has not been read". After two weeks, I finally got a reply to my question but it was not at all helpful. It turned out that although I had sent the email to the address in the help file which would be the logical place to send it to that is not the place Trend wants you to send tech support questions to! They have more than one address to send to on their website and those addresses are not what they want you to use either. Email support is a waste of time. But then since you can call, and I never have had to wait more than 5 minutes, why use email? Downside to PC Cillin is that the POP3 scanner is backward. Many ISPs will not want you to use it. It is like the NAV 2001 POP3 scanner. I deleted the registry key for the POP3 scanner because Road Runner doesn't want us to use it...it causes the same problems that I had frequently when using NAV 2001 and Road Runner. I took the POP3 out of MSconfig startup also. However, Trend Micro delivers an update to the POP3 scanner, with the updated pattern files, and then the POP3 scanner runs in the background. This is irritating. After FIVE phone calls to Trend Micro about this problem, and the techs giving me poor advice such as insisting that if I removed the registry key for POP3 or uninstalled and then reinstalled the program that I would not have the POP3 scanner activated after a pattern file update, I finally got a tech who said that there is no way to separate POP3 scanner from the rest of the program when it comes to pattern file updates. So, even though I do not use the POP 3 scanner, it activates and runs after every pattern update. I have to remember, each time, to use control/alt/delete to get rid of it. Trend Micro has told me they will try to fix this problem, as well as the outdated scanner itself, for PC Cillin 2004. This is a definite deficiency as many persons do not want to run a redundant email scanner, even if it is not a backward one, and Trend should have made it possible to completely separate the email scanner from the rest of the program. The Trend Micro website is excellent and the information on viruses, etc. found there is outstanding as is Housecall, the web based virus scanner. The firewall which comes with PC Cillin is adequate IF you don't use a proxy such as Ad/subtract or Proxomitron. This firewall is worthless if you do use a proxy as I do. Once the proxy is allowed then anything can get through (such as a trojan) unchallenged by the firewall.

My Personal Choice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I chose PC-Cillin over Norton Internet Security 2003, McAfee Home 7.0 & Panda Titanium. Here's why. With Norton it caught viruses but at system expense and I couldn't play some games with it installed. There is an issue with "Black & White' and I love this game. McAfee - The firewall wouldn't allow me to connect. I tried their tech support for hours but couldn't get it to work so I got a refund. Panda Titanium was letting in worms in my email. Happened twice in a day without any warning. Contacted support but they could not figure out why. So I applied for refund Pc-Cillin allows me to play my games, intercepts worms and kills them before they get into your inbox and doesn't use many system resources like Norton. Customer support is great & the program scans fast. The firewall had to be updated before it worked but I use Black Ice Defender so I don't need it. I advise PC-Cillin 2003. The price is good and it has a high rate of virus interception.

Avoid this.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A piece of crap actually. I had PcCillin 2002 which was very stable. I am running Win98SE on a 1Ghz AMD machine. I was offered a free upgrade to 2003 which I took. Then the trouble started. Web pages not loading properly. Wrong page would load, computer hangs on shutdown. Freezes at times. It constantly reconfigured my email settings so that it would not work. POP3trap would crash. I removed 2003, reinstalled 2002 again. I use Zonealarm for firewall.

Consumes too much memory!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Pc-Cillin takes up 5 Gigabytes on my hard drive and I've only had it for 4 months. It creates all this massive "vss" files which I assume are virus defintions, but why do they need to take up so much space? I also register about 15 hack attemps every day, which I'm kinda suspicious about.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had Norton preinstalled on my laptop and it took up too many resources and slowed the system down. I had used Pc-Cillin on other computers and so I naturally upgraded this when I saw how bad Norton was. It blocks viruses as soon as you download them and the updates are quick easy to get.

The Support Team Ignores you.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought PC-Cillin because it was what was prepackaged with my Sony Viao. I had found it to be easy to use and it seemed to catch all the bugs. BUT it does have some support issues, sometimes, at least in my case, the download files would clone themselves into the same folder taking up space, and it would create logs up to 100 megs and more of it's scans and if i deleted them, the program wouldn't run. I wrote tech support and they ignored my problem. Twice. The first time i ended up reinstalling the software it was taking up 4 Gigs of space. yes GIGS. and the second time, when i took it off, it was up to over 1. It's absurd that an anti virus program should require that much space. I'm going back to norton.

Best in show

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used this year Norton Anti-virus 2003 which locked up and stoped working several times. Additionally used McAfee 7.0.1 Home eddition which always reported that system active scanning was not working while the icon in the systray reported it was on. So now I'm using PC-Cillin and it is working great with my system. No locks ups. No false messages about weather it is loaded or not. They also have a great online scanner that you can use for free and with no need todo a program installation. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Creates havoc with other programs

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this pre-installed on a new Sony computer. I'm running Wordperfect 7 on that machine and every time PC-Cillin scans for viruses, it creates problems in Wordperfect. I can't exit properly, and the letter template has a step eliminated. I have to shut down the machine to exit Wordperfect. When I reopen Wordperfect and edit the template the program returns to normal. I also use The Bat as my email program, and I recently lost my entire inbox. I think PC-Cillin may be responsible for this also, but not sure. All this on a P4 desktop w/512 megs of ram. I think the whole Windows universe is bloated and overly complex, but I'm stuck in it and have to make the best of it. That probably means going back to Norton.

A good AV package.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Yeah, I think PC-Cillin is fine. No problems with day to day running, and I get regular virus definition updates. The only problem I had is when updating from 2001 to 2002 - a bug in the upgrade left cr@p all over my machine, so I reformatted. No problems since, although I'm reluctant to upgrade to 2003 - still using 2002.

Cons:

Review: My PC has Atholon XP 1800 running Windows XP (just clean-installed). PC-Cillin froze my PC from time to time. Whenever I tried to open a huge ZIP file (about 550M), it took quite a long time (several minutes)! During this period, the PC was frozen. Apparently PC-Cillin was scanning the file. Also PC-Cillin froze my PC for about 10 minutes when switching user accounts. It seems that PC-Cillin was scanning something again. Once I uninstall PC-Cillin, my PC never freezes again.

its great if all you need is antivirus

Pros:

Cons:

Review: well yes its a good antivirus but i have to say that the firewall is so so. i just hope they had a complete product as mcafee internet security witch i am using right now and i think its the best over all not all over :), dont get confused now lol. i have used all the antiviruses in existence and if i would have to make a perfect security program it would be: macafee security and privacy settings, pc-cillin antivirus, norton's windoctor, zonealarm pro and ofcourse regcleaner. well i know i am asking for too much cause i understand its imposible for a company to be best in all fields, well maybe is but then who will bye the others, lol. but yes if all you want is antivurus, trend micros pc-cillin is the right for you. but if you need more then that get macafee internet security and that is if you are ready for some hardcore security.

AV Performance Good, Stability Horrible

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It didn't work too well for me. I purchased this program based on the glowing reviews it received everywhere. While waiting on my order, I downloaded the PC-Cillin trial (BTW, they do NOT supply up-to-date virus definitions nor allow updating on the trial). After uninstalling Norton and installing PC-Cillin, the program ran so-so. I kept getting errors which I attributed to orphaned Norton system files (some of which I deleted). The most annoying was the fact that my browser kept crashing and exhibiting weird routing behaviors. When the full version arrived, I re-formatted my system to completely rid myself of Norton and installed PC-Cillin on a clean system. (Be advised, the program also requires Internet activation for ONE computer, ala Micro$oft) Needless to say, the problems persisted, especially the browser crashes. And they occurred with both IE and Netscape. I did not install the firewall, so I can't see how that would be the problem. PC_Cillin also runs like 4-5 tasks in the background and, in my opinion, uses just as much juice as Norton. The only benefits I noticed were the outstanding speed in which PC-Cillin scanned and the very simple update procedure. I uninstalled PC-Cillin and reinstalled Norton, (for the time being), and ALL of the problems disappeared.

Mail Scan Doesn't support SSL Pop

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No idea why you would recommend an antivirus program that doesn't support mail scanning with ssl for pop3 on port 995. This is a serious, serious limitation. I asked Trend Micro for help on this, but the solution they sent me was a) complicated and b) didn't work. I am not a newbie, but I finally gave up, uninstalled Pc-cillin, and installed Norton Antivirus which worked like a charm. Maybe it can be done, however it requires more time than I have to waste. Too bad -- it's back to Norton for me.

This product is much more stable that Norton.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Norton in the past but it kept having some weird compatibilty with my computer (win 98 and then 2000) and my OS becomes unstable when I run both internet explorer and norton together my pc kept crashing. I uninstalled and reinstalled norton and cleaned the registry but no help -- still unstable. In the end i switched to PCcillin two years back and zero compatibility problem! Works perfect with my system. And the user manual and interface is much more simpler to user in PC-cilin, and caught a bunch of virusess like Klez and Trojans for me!

No Worries

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have been using PC-cillin since the 98 version came bundled with my system and have found it an excellent piece of kit. The addition of a firewall with the 2002/03 versions catches 99.9% of system attacks - however it is not infalible and the occasional hack has slipped through before the application has had a chance to fire off a request for an update (minimum setting 10 minutes after connection) therefore I would recommend building on PCC's firewall - I find Sygate 5.0 running parallel excellent. I have never found it to be resource hungry and it keeps itself tidy. Overall, very comparable when compared with Norton or McFee.

Does not work with Windows XP Pro

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Scan engine is not compatable with the compressed folder dll in windows xp. When doing a manual scan computer goes lethargic and slows to a crawl. Response from Trendmicro support is that this is a know problem. This is not posted on their site. The work around is to unregister the .dll for compressed folders and then install 3rd party program to handle zips. Not acceptable to me.

applies updates like a dream

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Small download 14MB, easy to install and manage. But the best feature is the auto-update of virus signatures. You simply cannot beat this product for client AV. Try downloading McAfee or Symantec bloatware sometime. Or better yet, don't waste your time with anything else. Sure, there's some load from the product. But that's the price you pay for any AV software. At least this stuff works.

Well this Rocks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used and begun to love NAV 2003 and also used MCAFEE 7 which is buggy. I never thought of seeing the day of doing away with NAV 2003 and using PC-Cillin. I love this products, its not a resource hog and doesnt degrade performance. Bill is a **** like his daddy who works for MCAFEE

Does the Job and easy to use

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Automatic and frequent virus updates, simple firewall, and easy interface. Less performance hit than McAfee and better install than Norton (IMHO). Easy to disable features using taskbar icon (great feature for gamers). Got PCC2000 free with my system, then bought PCC2002 last fall for under $20 CDN. Stopped a persistant eml virus cold (got from morpheous I think).

valued for money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: good solution, with comprehensive features, only minus is the scanning speed, which i can take as, i'm more concern over security and features, as to speed of scan alone..

Overkill

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This *might* suit a complete novice with a fast machine ... for anyone else, it looks a lot like bloatware. Standard install on Win 9x registers 5 startup tasks ... disabling features (webtrap, poptrap) does not remove the related startup tasks from the registry - not nice. If they are not used, why have them running? Makes for very slow reboots. Realtime scanning is very slow. Does not give option about type of file access (ie, there really is no need to scan a file at every read access if the machine has already scanned it once when created). The firewall software is simply not configurable enough - there are several better FREE firewalls available than what is included here.
