Let's be clear: Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 is the best Internet protection bundle currently on the market--period. It includes first-rate antivirus, firewall, antispam, and spyware-blocking tools, plus a host of extra security features--all for about $20 less than comparable products F-Secure Internet Security, ZoneAlarm Internet Security, McAfee Internet Security, and Symantec Internet Security. Better yet, PC-cillin's virus scanner is fast without overtaxing system resources, and its interface is orderly and easy to navigate. We also love Trend Micro's free phone support, a perk unmatched by any other consumer computer-security vendor. On the downside, PC-cillin's setup routine doesn't automatically scan for viruses, although you can run a manual scan once setup is complete. And its spyware detection is turned off by default, an annoyance that's easy enough to correct. These quibbles, though, are relatively minor. PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 is an excellent value and easily wins our CNET Editors' Choice. PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 offers two setup choices: a full install loads every protection tool on the CD, while a scaled-down option leaves out extras such as the firewall and the new Wi-Fi Intrusion Detection feature that alerts you when an intruder hacks into your wireless network. We'd prefer more installation choices. For instance, the firewall is essential, but Wi-Fi detection isn't much use to someone without a wireless LAN.

Setup took just 11 minutes--including a 2-minute preinstall scan--in our tests. The main reason for the speedy setup was that PC-cillin didn't run a postinstallation scan, which we ran manually. (Most antivirus programs also do a full-system scan immediately following installation, and we wish PC-cillin did also.) Including the manual scan, setup time totaled 30 minutes, still much shorter than with Norton AntiVirus 2005, each of which took more than an hour to install. McAfee VirusScan 9.0 installs without prescanning your system and took only 5 minutes in our tests.

PC-cillin Internet Security's Summary screen shows green check-mark icons when your security settings are safe.

The PC-cillin interface is intelligently organized and simple to browse. The main Summary screen provides a quick overview of your computer's protection level: green check-mark icons mean your antivirus, firewall, and other security settings are safe; red exclamation-point icons indicate trouble. A left-side column provides fast access to individual security components, including the e-mail scanner, firewall, and spyware detector. We do have one gripe, however. The spyware feature was turned off by default, forcing us delve into the settings to activate it. Furthermore, the Summary screen gave no indication that spyware detection was off; we discovered this for ourselves.

PC-cillin Internet Security 2005's core strengths include an aggressively low price, a generous assortment of security tools, and speedy, reliable virus scanning.

Thanks to PC-cillin's organized interface, virus-scanner settings are a breeze to configure.

Spyware scans in PC-cillin operate two ways: either during virus scans or via a separate, spyware-only scan. PC-cillin wisely takes a cautious approach with spyware, a vague (if ominous) term used to describe everything from advertiser-supported software to malicious dialers that surreptitiously connect your PC to pay-per-call sites. When PC-cillin detects potential spyware, it gives you the option of deleting the program or going to Trend Micro's support site to learn more about it. We found that two of three "spyware" threats on our PC were, in fact, adware programs required to run free, ad-supported applications.

PC-cillin 2005 has added some new tools, including Home Network Control, a dialog box that lets you manage the security of all PCs on a home network via a single interface. This feature is easy to use but requires the $89.95 PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 Home Security Pack, which allows you to install PC-cillin on up to three PCs. The new Wi-Fi Intrusion Detection alerts you when a bandwidth thief (or other intruder) enters your wireless LAN and begins surfing your Internet access for free; you can lock out rogue surfers with the click of a button. And the new antiphishing software prevents naive users from surrendering personal and financial information to known rogue sites, by safeguarding personal data such as credit card and social security numbers.

In CNET Labs tests, Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 produced zero system performance drag, equaling EZ Antivirus 2005 in this regard. And PC-cillin also took much less time to scan our 1.3GB hard drive than did F-Secure, Norton, or McAfee.

To measure F-Secure's impact on system performance, CNET Labs used BAPCo's SysMark 2002, an industry-standard benchmark. The Internet-content-creation portion of SysMark measures a desktop's performance running off-the-shelf applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. (We did not run the Office Productivity portion of the benchmark because it incorporates McAfee VirusScan 5.13.)

Our test system was a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Professional, with an Intel Pentium 4 1.9GHz processor and 256MB of RDRAM. With PC-cillin running, our test system scored a perfect 100, meaning there was a no reduction in overall system speed. Only one other antivirus product, EZ Antivirus 2005, also scored a perfect 100. By comparison, F-Secure Internet Security 2005 scored a 95, or a 5 percent reduction, while Norton AntiVirus 2005 and McAfee VirusScan 9.0 each scored a 94, or a 6 percent reduction. (An Internet-content-creation score of 100 represents the performance of our test system without any extraneous software running.) In a test of scanning speed, PC-cillin averaged a speedy 2.4 minutes, again rivaled in speed by only EZ Antivirus 2005.

SysMark 2002 Internet-content-creation (ICC) score Normalized score Percent degradation Average boot time (sec.) Scan 1.3GB directory, average scan time (min.)
Test system 233 100 n/a 38.9 n/a
F-Secure Internet Security 2005 221 95 5 79 6.97
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 233 100 0 58 2.21
eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005 233 100 0 47 2.56
McAfee VirusScan 9.0 219 94 6 51 6.68
Norton AntiVirus 2005 220 94 6 71 6.1

In past VirusBulletin tests since November 2000, the Windows desktop version of PC-cillin has been tested 6 times and has passed 5. By comparison, over the same period, Norton AntiVirus has been West Coast Checkmark, ICSA Labs, and Checkvir.com.

In informal testing, PC-cillin's firewall received a thumbs-up from ShieldsUp, the Gibson Research Corporation site that tests a PC's protection against unwanted intrusions via the Net. PC-cillin protected our test computer's data during the test. In comparison, VirusScan no longer includes a firewall, and Norton AntiVirus, which never included a firewall, comes instead with a limited port-blocking technology that proved not as secure as a full-strength firewall in ShieldsUp testing.

Trend Micro delivers what the rest of the antivirus pack won't: free phone support. And since the company also provides a toll-free number for its U.S. customers, the call's on their dime, not yours. We found wait times to be very brief--a minute or less--during regular business hours, and the Trend Micro tech staff was polite and knowledgeable. Phone support hours are weekdays, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.

The PC-cillin support site provides current information on the latest viral outbreaks across the globe.

Unlike McAfee, Trend Micro doesn't offer online chat, but its e-mail support is available 24/7. E-mail queries are addressed quickly; in one instance, we received a reply within 11 hours. The PC-cillin support site is well organized and contains the usual assortment of tech tips and virus alerts.

Used to be a good program

Pros: relatively easy to use

Cons: It no longer works and tech support cannot seem to fix it.

Review: I have used TrendMicro for the last several years. I always thought it was a great virus protection program. Recently I had to upgrade to Vista. I also upgraded TrendMicro to be Vista compatible. After a few months all access to my web host and email stopped -- unless TrendMicro was off. Tech support cannot seem to help. I just renewed in April I'm going to attempt to get a partial refund then buy something that works and has knowledgeable tech support. I do not recommend you buy this product.

Does the job, but eats up RAM

Pros: Good user interface and security features.

Cons: Very resource intensive; e-mail features sub par

Review: Iam running Win2000 Pro: Have been using this for 11 1/2 months and will not renew my subscription. Have have to reinstall the product 3 or 4 times on the advise of customer support for "corupted files". Some processes hang-up in TASKMAN and need to freed with after market RAM utility. I Think Zone Alarms is more stable if not more functional.

Excellent Security

Pros: Easy to use, self-sufficient and runs fast...

Cons: Anti-spam, spyware and privacy protection is somewhat useless..

Review: I've used McAfee and Norton...all of then is a joke...Trend will pick up all virus and plus any virus both Norton and McAfee missed and Trend loads up/runs faster then other "BIG" name security software...if you want a good anti-virus and firewall and does not hog your system resources...this is IT!!!

Doesent work

Pros: Couldent find any...

Cons: Does nothing

Review: We had this programs for 6 months and then switched to another program because our computer had slowed down considerably and I had found many viruses manualy. Upon switching to another program and running a virus scan we found that 95% of our files were corrupted. So in summary Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security is absolutly worthless.

Horrible Customer Service

Pros: Decent Software

Cons: Have had horrible customer service with the rebate department

Review: I sent all of the required items to trendmicro to receive my rebate. They then sent back a postcard stating that the UPC was not included. I remember physically cutting it off the box and placing it in the envelope double and triple checking to be absolutely sure I included everything that was required. Upon receiving this notice that the UPC was not included I called trendmicro to see what we could do to resolve the issue. They said that without the UPC there was nothing they could do for me and I spoke to two different contacts and a department supervisor. Not only do I feel that this is some of the worst customer service I've receieved, I can't help but feel a little cheated as well. It just seems to be a ploy to get out of sending out rebates especially since they stated that they would take a copy of the UPC code as proof. If the original is so important, what kind of proof is a copy of it??? It doesn't seem to be that important to them, only an excuse to not send me a check.

I have been very happy with Symantec Norton Internet Security in the past and I am going to go back to them. I have received great customer service with Symantec in the past and this being my first impression of trendmicro, I'm not impressed. Don't deal with this company, Symantec is better.

Not worth the aggravation

Pros: low cost and installed easily

Cons: ineffective anti-virus, poor customer support

Review: Very good at advising that you have a virus and that the software failed to quarantine it.
You cannot then manually move the infected file to the quarantine folder.
You have to manually delete the file, if you can find it. It is not always where the software specifies.

The anti-spy ware never finds anything, so you have to run Ad-Aware or Spybot.

The firewall is nothing but trouble, if you need to access your home pc when away. Customer support is of little or no help.

simply does not work

Pros: Good features, but can't access them.

Cons: bug-ridden, cannot access features

Review: I installed PC-Cillin 2006 and everything I tried to do, like update, scan, etc. I got the message "The feature is still loading. Please, wait a moment and try again." I waited and waited and waited... also rebooted, twice. Same message each time. Trend Micro acknowledged they knew about the error and sent me a link to a new install package. I downloaded, uninstalled and reinstalled from scratch. Exact same problem. I cannot evaluate the package, because I cannot use it. I have come to find out that this is a KNOWN bug, has been for a while, and evidently is still not fixed. Software has gotten so sloppy.

Purchased and installed this product & I love it

Pros: Speed, speed, speed.

Cons: None that I can tell yet.

Review: Was using Norton, it slowed my computer dramatically. I just installed this last night and cannot believe how much faster my computer is. I wish I had done this long ago. So far I really like the options, more than Norton and they are easy to understand for someone like me who has to really study what I am doing with a computer!

Great Stuff!

Pros: Not Available

Cons: Not Available

Review: I've used this stuff for a long time and had great results. The system will detect your network and configure the firewall so that everything can talk with each other.

The anti-virus and anti-spam are great, but initial setup isn't as clean as I like it. However the directions are very clear on what to do. However, if you use the full Outlook client, there's no problem.

Like all the anti-spyware products out there, it's not 100% effective, but then none of them are. As I've used this new version over the past several months, it has been stopping more and more.

Overall, a great product!!!

User-friendly and thorough.

Pros: SO much easier to use than Norton and doesn't screw up my computer

Cons: Haven't discovered any yet

Review: I've been using Trend Micro for over six months now and am impressed with how easy it is to use, especially for a non-computer literate woman like me. It doesn't seem to be as intrusive as Norton, which I'd used for years and still have on other computers. I'm waiting for their virus protection to expire so I can get rid of it and buy Trend Micro. My computer works better and doesn't freeze up and I love how often it automatically updates the virus protection. Also, it is easy to personalize the various program features. I love it. Customer service reps are courteous, helpful and get back to me quickly.

Truly effective customizable protection and they are not slow on their reaction to new threats!

Pros: Less expensive annually than other Suites, faster updates to new threats normally within hours, friendly helpful customer service.

Cons: Your pc must have good ram\virtual memory config to run smoothly.

Review: I am a Tech and I have tried several other marketed and much applauded "Suites" at work and at home, that hogged resources much more than Trend Micro, or that were much too complicated for novices to configure and understand quickly. You can install this Suite and no joke, within 5 minutes have the firewall, network intrusion, and antiviral settings all done. The next thing you know Trend Micro is updating itself to the latest files, Voila, you're done. Trend Micro is dependable and always stops viruses and trojans dead in their tracks. This is my 2nd year using it, no virus or trojan has ever gotten past it. Say what you want, you couldn't pay me to switch.

Best experience with a whole internet security suite I've had so far !

Pros: Integrates with WindowsXP security center and no lockups !

Cons: Registration and activation a little slow.

Review: I would recommend this suite to anyone. I had bad experiences with most other suites I tried : Norton Internet Security, Zonealarm, CA Etrust, Panda, McAfee, Ftrust & Authentium.

Does not work with Outlook - Blocks emails

Pros: Easy to install,

Cons: Blocks emails (both POP3 and SMTP), poor tech support

Review: It blocked all my incoming and outgoing emails after I installed it. The help menu does not provide any help on this topic. Sent request for help online as instructed, never got any response after two weeks. Finally found their phone number online (not provided with the product), talked with tech support. After she asked me to do a number of things on my computer, she concluded it would not work on my computer, which is made by HP Compaq Pentium 4 I bought a year ago. Her advice was to disable email scan for both incoming and outgoing emails. So much for an internet security software! I am very disapointed.

Does the job - most complaints cured by proper settings

Pros: Works without damaging the system; halts internet traffic

Cons: Rebate gotcha!

Review: After more than a decade of using Norton AntiVirus (within Systemworks) and dealing with its kinky failures to update -- with no cure -- I finally started switching our computers to PC-Cillin 2006. What a breath of fresh air. The anti-virus and other features work just fine (although I continue to use Ads Gone, Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, and CounterSpy). Nearly all of the complaints voiced in these "reviews" are easily fixed by using the settings available in PC-Cillan. I've never had any pop-up notices bother me because you can set it not to do this. Best of all, you can easily halt Internet traffic with 2 clicks of your mouse -- so that when you have to turn off the antivirus when installing applications, you are protected from Internet attacks. Nice feature. FI;ve experienced no slow down with any of our AMD 64-bit-based computers. airly easy to use. So far, after 3 months, pretty much a pleasure. I think I'm moving all our computers to PC-Cillin as their Norton years expire. Only downside is rebates -- the two rebates available from Fry's Electronics both required the original UPC. I spoke with PC-Cillin's customer service and hopefully resolved the problem. We'll see as we wait, and wait, for rebate checks.

the best i've used

Pros: easy, quick and user intuitive to set=up

Cons: Have none to mention

Review: I've have used NcAfee, Norton and Zone Alarm at my Sterling Gardens B & B for 7 years now and have had problems of one kind or another with them all. I got PC-cillin because the Gen. Mgr. of the Black Oak Casino, a friend, said they were using it. I got it in December and have been using it for 3 weeks. It immediately got 3 spies and 2 viruses that had not been collected by Norton. Also I use Netscape and it supports this Browser. I'd recommend it to anyone!!!!!

User Rating: 9/10

best anti-virus/security I've used

Pros: fast - troublefree installation, setup, use

Cons: none that I've found

Review: I'd been using Norton for quite a few years and MacAfee previous to that and decided to try PC-cilin because I felt Norton seemed to tax my pc at times. I have been completely satisfied with Pc-cillin and will be recommending it in the future.

You'll wish you had a virus - DO NOT BUY

Pros: fairly non-intrusive robust virus protection

Cons: updating the software the worst experience of your life

Review: I've updated three times. Honestly, at this point I only do it out of morbid curiosity. It takes, and I'm not kidding, months to get through the upgrade process with the most incompetent staff of support imaginable. It sounds like an angry customer that just wants to vent but I'm not kidding.

If you got a virus, there would be less pain in low-level formatting your drive, installing the OS and and all applications, cutting your hair, painting your car, and going into the witness protection program.

Example: I install and upgrade the software and the console shows the new version but the subscription is lapsed so you can't get new patterns or programs. But you just upgraded? What? Hmmmm. Call support. You deal with support to and you can count on dozens of emails. Honestly. I'll have a thread where I'll attach screen shots showing this incredibly simple situation and they'll ask for my serial number. Again. Even though it is in the thread 10+ times. You can't even start a thread w/o it and they ask for it. So you give and they say, "Your subscription is expired" and give a link to buy an upgrade. Which is what you already did. You give them screen shots of your order confirmation and the their own support website showing that you are a legit customer and they give you a link to buy the upgrade.

Think about that! That is the issue and after 12-15 emails the dip on the other end has completely missed the point. So you start again. I'm not kidding in that you can go on for months like this. They did this to me with 2003 and 2004 and both times I only got it working when they told me to uninstall and gave me a new product (as opposed to the upgrade). But this was a Hoover Dam type effort.

Just to be clear, I own everything. I have three computers running XP and run Linux on two others in this house am proficient in software and hardware. I have a Masters in EE and am a semiconductor designer.

Don't ever, ever, ever, ever buy this product. You will rue the day.

Way better than norton, but not as good as i would like

Pros: works wells, minimal bugs, much better than norton

Cons: cannot renew subscription, cannot setup security safe zones, a pain to install

Review: hi,

i am a computer consultant so i work a lot with internet security packages. i moved to trend because i lost too many customers using norton product. norton used to be good a few years ago but now i think they put out bloated, buggy software. more specific, i ran into the following problem with norton products: 1) bog down system performance in a big way 2) all of a sudden stop updating themselves for no reason 3) removal can be a nightmare. sometimes removing norton would absolutely ruin a system to the point where i would have to rebuild the system from scratch. and these are just the problems that immediately come to mind. in my opinion, norton products are unacceptable (not just their security products).

so, i moved to trend micro. clearly much better then norton. i noticed very few bugs with trend micro, which is unusual for a security suite. but there are a few things i don't like: 1) you cannot setup a trusted zone like you can under zonelabs products or norton products. trusted zones are great because they allow you to define systems which you want minimal security (ie systems on your LAN that you want to share files and printers), but allow you to keep tight security for everyone else. 2) when trend comes out with a new version, you cannot renew your subscription on an older version. you must remove the old version and reinstall a new version. total pain in the ass, especially since their products take so long to install. this means you could end up removing and reinstalling the application every year. i cannot believe you cannot just renew. 3) installation takes a long time and is kind of a pain. you have to install, then reboot, then register, then download latest updates, then reboot again, then you have to customize the settings (i don't like their defaults. for instance by default the software does not update itself!). too much work. should be much easier/quicker to install. 4) trend micro doesn't have a good summary screen that tells you all you want to know on a single screen. you must go to one obscure area to find out when you subscription expires, another to find out if real time protection is on, etc. they should have one easy to read/access summary screen with all this information like norton (one of the few strengths that norton has).

so, alas, trend is not quite as good as i would like. way better than norton, but i still hope there is better. now i am looking at zonelabs AV suite. so far it looks really good. it is reasonably priced (their full security suite is expensive but i don't think it is necessary. i think the AV suite is adequete). and no question the zonelabs firewall is second to none. easy to setup, quite customizable, and nice and secure. i have a feeling that the zonelabs is the way to go but i need to try it out for a few weeks.

A revolving door for virii

Pros: Minimal packaging; low price

Cons: It does not work

Review: We purchased a 3-user drop for the TM IS 2005 for our home network less than 2 months before this incident.

The incident in question involves two stages - the first was the infection and the second was some of the worst technical support I have encountered.

The system in question is a Windows 2000 box that was fully patched (according to Windows Update) 3 hours before the infection. Trend Micro was patched fully 1 hour before the infection.

The infection itself happened through a Redirect (which TM logged but did not stop) while running IE. This redirect dropped pcs_0002.exe unto the system (pcimedia.com), which is a payload system. The payload in this case was a Klez varient. The damage was extensive. The best TM managed was to log the initial redirect - no stop or warn, just log.

After that we began the process of contacting TM for solutions. This proved to be worse than anything I could imagine. Our emails were met with returned form letters not even tailored to the actual body of our message - just a drop return with a name slapped at the bottom. However it was in phone support that lay the real mess.

The first 3 people we talked to could not carry on an English conversation. The 4th person we got could at least be understood, but could not even understand what her PC screen was telling her. She kept stammering over the terms and once she actually said bye in the middle of reading something off to my wife then disconnecting the call.

Over a week later and we have yet to find a single competent person in their tech support phone line or is answering emails. The best we have managed is to get a copy of HiJack This!

PC-cillin 2005 should be taken off the market

Pros: Well photographed pictures on the box

Cons: too numerous to list

Review: Do not purchase PC-cillin 2005.
In my opinion, PC-cillin 2005 should be taken off the market.
I have owned PC-cillin 2005 for about two months and have experienced very annoying problems with different aspects of the program.
Because of rebates, I was able to aquire my copy of PC-cillin 2005 for free. Because of the problems I've experienced with PC-cillin, even though I didn't pay anything for it, I still think I spent too much money! It's really that bad.
What I want to know is how the reviewers at CNET could possibly give this program an excellent review.
Updated
The following was added December 6th, 2005:

In an almost desperate attempt to understand why the CNET Editors gave PC-cillin such high marks, I removed the program on one of my two computers which seemed to be conflicting with PC-cillin. That program is Ghost Surf by Tennebril. Another problem on this same computer was that almost anytime any other program would be either installed or uninstalled, Windows would stop recognizing that PC-cillin was installed and signs would post which read something to the effect of 'Windows does not find virus protection' and 'Windows does not find a firewall'. Oddly enough, even though Windows did not recognize an installed firewall, it did not activate the Windows firewall.
This same computer was new having never had any firewall (except Windows) or virus protection prior to PC-cillin.
On my other computer, PC-cillin was installed and has never been recognized by Windows. The PC-cillin Trend Micro Techs told me this is a problem with Windows in that sometimes Windows does not recognize PC-cillin is installed. I have a question: Why is that most of the time Windows recognizes PC-cillin is installed on one of my computers and yet, Windows does not recognize PC-cillin on my other computer? It would seem to me that if this situation were a "Windows problem", it would be consistant and act a certain way all the time. But, maybe I'm wrong about that. I don't know.
This second computer (the one where Windows does not recognize PC-cillin at all) had a long history with McAfee virus scan and firewall. Before the installation of PC-cillin, I cleared McAfee from everywhere I could think of including the registry. It is possible that the reason Windows does not recognize PC-cillin is installed is due to McAfee security having been installed on the computer previously. I spent a long time clearing McAfee from the computer and if any remnant of McAfee was left behind, I can't imagine where.
I wasn't particularly fond of McAfee either but one thing I will say in it's favor is that there was never any problem with Windows recognizing it was installed on the computer.
If, indeed, this problem of Windows not recognizing the existance of PC-cillin was only extant on the computer which formerly had McAfee security, I would blame the fact that McAfee was previously installed (and there must be some remnant of it left?)for this problem. However, this problem also exists intermittantly on the other computer which never had any other security system prior to PC-cillin.
The following are occassions when PC-cillin ceases to be recognized by Windows on the computer which was new when PC-cillin was installed:
The use of Tennebril Ghost Surf;
The installation of a program (not consistant, happens about 75% of the time);
The uninstallation of a program (not consistant, happens about 75% of the time);
The use of Yahoo Messenger (about 50% of the time).
In it's favor, I will say that the automatic PC-cillin updates work very well. They seem to be trying to keep the virus protection up to date. I try to give credit where it is due but I would still advise against the idea of installing PC-cillin on your computer, based on my experience with it.
Updated
I was finally able to "straighten out" the situation with PC-cillin to the extent that the 2005 version became more acceptable to me. For this reason, I decided to give the 2006 version a try because I was told the 2006 version was greatly improved as compared to the 2005 version. I found this to be true in both the 2006 as well as the 2007 versions and now would highly recommend PC-cillin.
Updated
In the final analysis, the 2005 version of PC-cillin eventually became more acceptable to me with the help of Trend Micro Techs. For this reason and because I was told the 2006 version was a vast improvement as compared to the 2005 version, I decided to try the 2006 version which I liked very much. As a matter of fact, I was so impressed with the 2006 version of PC-cillin that I decided to install the 2007 version.
My current opinion of the 2006 and 2007 versions of PC-cillin is completely different than the low opinion I had of the 2005 version, initially. Now, I give the 2006 and the 2007 versions my highest recommendation. It's a great program and the Trend Micro Tech customer service is excellent.

Can only be installed in 1 PC

Pros: Fast scan, but leaves me feeling unsafe.

Cons: Does not remember frequently visited sites

Review: I would not have purchased this software if I knew that Tend only allows you to install it in one computer. I paid $44 dollars hoping to install PC-Cillin in each of my 2 PCs, but kept getting an error on the second install. I searched the documentation and nowhere did I find a statement that they only offer a single user license. I didn?t find that out until I called the customer service #, which started with a recording that they do not support the Internet Security software although the package boost telephone support. I spoke to someone anyway who told me that he would make an exception this time only and give me a second serial #, but the # he gave me didn?t work. I will not purchase this product again.

P.S. I also had problems trying to submit my rebate because they offered several product numbers for the same product and for less money than the sticker on the box offered. Boo Trend.

Resource hog? Dump your Commodore 64.

Pros: Excellent antivirus; plays well with others

Cons: I agree the spyware/spam isn't as good as it should be

Review: CPU hog? Don't know what a couple of these guys are talking about. One computer I use PC-cillin on is a budget Celeron w/XP Home (512MB PC2100 RAM), another is an AMD 2200, plus an old laptop with a Pentium 3/800 (...not to mention my P4/2.8 with 1GB RAM, and my dual Xeon with 2 gigs.) None of these seems slowed down perceptibly.

I've been using PC-cillin for 4 years now. Tried (at various times) Norton and McAfee... lots of conflicts and hassles. PC-cillin has kept me and my small network totally virus-free, and has created no software conflicts (and I try out a lot of software.)

I know what Gibson Research says, but between Trend Micro's firewall, my router firewall, and PC-cillin, I've had 0 infections, and no intruders have come in on any of my computers. I think that says a lot. I do use a separate spyware program, but I think PC-cillin is still a good value.

Now if Trend can get the other aspects of their software to make the grade...

Great piece of Secure software

Pros: Great no complains

Cons: Cannot find one as yet

Review: I have been using this Security Software for about 8 months and I have no complains. It is realiable, secure and has a fast scan. The privacy options that it gives the user is great and I recommend this software.

Buyer Beware

Pros: Solves some of the problems it should

Cons: Spyware scanning so poor it amounts to false advertising

Review: Athough I have worked in corporate datacenters most of my working life, I am admittedly not the most PC-savvy of net users. The whole point of good software, however, should be to make it easy to solve problems and on that score PC-cillin's performance for me has been distinctly mixed.

My PC picked up the bogus "Spy Sherriff" virus and was almost crippled, so I downloaded PC-cillin on the basis of CNET's praise and the $25 rebate, which requires you send in evidence of a similar product already purchased by them or a couple of other software providers, and takes an absurdly long time to process, so the rebate process is certainly not straightforward.

First thing I noticed was that I had to also install freeware - spybot and ad aware - to remove Spy Sherriff, something PC-cillin should have been able to do on it's own.

Second, the software prompts you to upgrade ABSURDLY often, many times a DAY, even if you JUST FINISHED UPDATING, and the manual scans are lengthy and burdensome, BUT DO THEN NOT CLEAN MY MACHINE.

It seems beyond dispute to me that anyone who writes a piece of software that prompts to be upgraded several times an hour is criminally insane, but I digress.

Most of my time with my PC is spent dealing with this nonsense now instead of using the net or email.

I suppose more sophisticated PC users would benefit much more from PC-cillin (CNET didn't rate it highly for nothing, I'm sure), but I would suggest less savvy users investigate carefully before choosing this product.

Decent, but not bullet proof

Pros: basic task

Cons: not enough virus protection

Review: I use only antivirus part of it. This product misses some trojans and virii that others like AVG antivirus, BitDefender, and Kaspersky. Kaspersky seems to be the most thorough, but did'nt get along with my other AVs. Norton AV crashed my computer several times. I now run AVG + BitDefender + PC Cillin side-by-side, but keep just one resident shield.

Okay, I guess its worth buying if it were only antivirus

Pros: Good antivirus

Cons: Memory Hog, not the greatest utilities

Review: It is truly a memory hog, using up to 50 MB of space. However, if you just install the antivirus and select Lightweight Install...its not too bad.

Only installs antivirus, and only uses around 9 MB of memory.

Its kind of expensive, but overall a good antivirus software.

Great, stable all-in-one internet security package

Pros: Easy installation, straight forward interface

Cons: I didn't find any major negatives

Review: Trend Micro is simply one of the most reliable, easy to use internet security packages out there right now. I used to be a long time Norton user, but gave up simply due to the fact that I gave up on Symantec. Once I purchased and installed PC-Cillin, it immediately found many viruses on my system that Norton had missed every time. PC-Cillin has a solid firewall and its antivirus is very speedy at scanning compared to Norton, which took centuries. Best of all, PC-Cillin does not use a whack of resources like Norton, so your system performance remains where it should be.

Great product

Pros: Fast scans and good security

Cons: Interface isn't the best

Review: This software passed all of Gibsons Shields Up tests, including the extensive port scan. I don't know what the other reviewers problems was, because there was absolutely no problem passing this test. I even ran the security check available on Norton's website and it passed that one with flying colors too.

I've always used Norton's products but no longer. Trend Micro makes Norton look really bad.

Absolutey superior over competition; hands down!

Pros: Great detection parameters

Cons: Haven't encountered one yet despite not scanning after install.

Review: I should have moved away from Norton long ago. And don't EVEN bring McAfee in to this discussion as they should be closed down by now.

THE BEST ALL IN ONE & I tried all of them in oct.2005

Pros: fastest and best

Cons: after you install it manually set everything-scan,update,antisp y...

Review: THE BEST EVER & THE FASTEST EVER & I tried all of the Internet security suites available as of Oct.2005. Most didn't work well with other software on my PC & websites I often visit. I always bought and used Symantec Norton Internet Security , but every year I had to uninstall it several times after I ran Live Update & THEY screwed it all up & THEY themselves give You the "expert advice" to uninstall & reinstall it again....????!!!!NO MORE SYMANTEC!!!!! MCAFEE IS A JOKE, too!!!!!other are O.K., but the ease of use &
or interference with other software on my PC & or websites I often visit was much "worse"& "annoying". SO AGAIN, THANK YOU TREND MICRO!!!!!!!!

Pros: It is very light in resources and it is the most efficient one... incredible

Cons: Don`t know any....

Review: I use this software for months and it is the best i`ve ever had on my pc.... i love it...
I`ve used many antivirus, like for example norton, mcafee, avg and many others and pc-cillin wins against them all by far away....

Total Garbage

Pros: None at all

Cons: Just about everything

Review: Nevermind what cnet says about this product. Take it form someone who has actually used it in the field. The software is garbage, Tech support is ridiculously inferior and of no help and when you persist they block you from sending them any more support emails. (REALLY!!) Do yourself a very big favor and buy another product. There are many better to choose from.

Blocked Long Emails

Pros: Updated Frequently

Cons: Renders Email ineffective

Review: After weeks of working with dozens of different Trend Micro techies to try and make PC-cillin allow sending long emails in Outlook Express, I changed email programs and PC-cillin blocked it as well. And to boot Trend Micro said they do not support my new email program. Bye Bye PC-cillin

Very Good Product

Pros: Easy to use and setup,

Excellent Control over Virus and Firewall Components

Pros: Real Support - Best from Novice to IT Pro

Cons: Privacy Component

Review: Trend Micro Systems Internet Security 2005 offers complete support for the low to advanced Internet User.

The Virus Real time Agent is updated many times per day and is lightening quick to act on a New Threat encountered via HTTP/S or IRC.

The Scan Facility is fully flexible offering the user an unlimited range of target files and frequency.

The Security Scan alerts you to new updates available from Microsoft but absent from you PC.

The Spyware Scan is effective and whilst is may not catch all threats ? severe threats are identified.

The predefined URL filter is accurate in its ability to guard again unwanted sites by category and can offer a degree of parental control.

By far the most impressive feature is the firewall component. There are 4 predefined profiles offering the basics of core protection for the type of environment from a direct connection to a wireless PC. Impressive control is offered at the file, application or global level, the direction of the source packet and includes ICMP as well as TCP/UDP/ANY targeting.

There is NO guesswork as to allow/disallow warnings unlike other popular firewalls and you don?t need a degree in comms to decide weather to all or disallow any firewall warning. The beauty of every warning is that the actual application requesting access is identified by program Icon, application AND file. A novice user can easily identify with the program Icon requesting access and does not really need to know anything about the associated file to make an informed decision. The firewall offers compatibility with SP2 for double protection and there is WI-FI warning to advise of any unwanted access by unauthorized wireless access.

The private data security is disappointing.

Support ranges from exceptional for UK/Asia based to just o.k for US based, however if you should be the victim of a New Virus, Trend Labs offers exception, non fee based analysis which a very welcome commitment to real product support and Multi user License packs are easy to purchase.

Conclusion: Once established, you wont spend your life looking after/guessing how to use the 2 most important components the Virus/ Firewall features and this offering from Trend Labs is the beginning of a vast range of small network to enterprise management tools.

Better than any other I've used

Pros: User friendly, doesn't conflict with any software I use

Cons: Website is not user friendly

Review: I've used Nortons for years. When Windows SP2 came out, my Nortons kept having conflicts with it. So I had to go with something else and this software has been a dream! I use the 3 computer Lan setup and its always worked just fine. I would recommend this for anyone!!!

Im a little sick of returning defective discs

Pros: it works...if you get installed

Cons: Im constantly doing returns on defective copies

Review: OK, yes I work at a retail store, I work at Staples in Canada. Heres my beef with Trend-micro. It Comes back and we have to return or exchange it on a continous basis. At first i figured it was just a bad batch, it happens. So I invistaged at all the other shops around my area, Future Shop, Best Buy, ect. Only to find they had the same problem. For some reason PC_CILLIN creates a system runtime error during install, which then forces the computer to restart. I average about 5 returns a month on defective discs all of which get tested either in our tech center or on a demo HP7170N media center (dual pentium processors and a GB of RAM). Im sorry but if you cant install on that then you got a problem.

As for me I refuse to join the TREND MICRO bandwaggon. however all the lovers out there will be pleased to note, i still remain un baised when selling antivirus software.

Would say 9, but this is to partially negate that idiot who gave it a 2.

Pros: Fast, easy to use, eats less resources than Norton, and few problems, if any to report

Cons: Doesn't have any of those few extra system-cleaning/optimizing features Norton has, but can't complain!

Review: Norton Security used to be THE standard, but as one reviewer stated, there haven't been too many improvements in the past few years. The only ups I've seen with Norton is that it comes bundled with extra features that I barely use. Other than that, I've always had troubles with the extra RAM Norton eats up.

My only complaint is that the firewall is too "automatic." Norton allowed its user to decide which applications could be blocked or allowed upon whim through simply manually accessing norton's worm protection settings.

Decent features; really bad upgrade

Pros: Stable; good configurability

Cons: Bad upgrade

Review: This tool is functional and works pretty well, and is cheap. It does the job fine. BUT, I just upgraded from 2004 version to 2005, and the install lost all of my preferences and settings, including my scan options and firewall settings. My firewall exception list will probably take me around 6 hours of work to get back. This is inexcusable. This is no way to encourage people to renew their licenses, Trend!

By far surpasses competitors

Pros: Built in Firewall stops viruses dead in their tracks

Cons: None. What a concept a software product that delivers.

Review: This user's experience is based on Firefox as browser~not the Virus enhanced, monopoly-like, browser called Internet Explorer.

Outstanding product for an outstanding price!

Pros: Easy to configure, options to use or choose only if needed.

Cons: Nothing is perfect ... but I'm still trying to find anything that could disappoint me.

Review: I've used a variety of anti virus packages both personal and corporate. Pretty hard for me to find fault with a program that has found legitimate positives that our corporate protection missed. I'm also a fan of the spyware detect features.
I would never have purchased this product had it not come bundled with my computer ... since using it, I've been a bit more open to bundled software. Definitely a winner! And definitely a package I have renewed and installed on all of my personal machines!

Pros: Lets you know when there is an update-with one click it is done

Cons: none that I can think of

Review: I highly recommend this product. Many of my friends are using this and have no complaints. They just sit back and let the updates come to them. This product can update more than once a day which makes me feel more confident that it is doing its job as virus and trojans are coming out every minute of the day.

More features but sadly complicated

Pros: A handful of awesome features that prove to be very valuable. Less resource-hogging. Very stable and reliable. Very quick boot-up time.

Cons: Not as user-friendly as the previous ones. Complex interface. Need more CPU power to perform scans.

Review: I used PC-cillin 2002 before, and it was spectacular. It never ever slowed my computer by any second. It performed scans relatively quiet and fast. The interface was extra-ordinary simple and easy. But after the 1-year subscription was out, I bought PC-Cillin 2005 I.S.. It was worth the bucks. PC-Cillin provides excellent security and is a reliable watchman. Its new features like Home Network control is very useful. Parental control is a nice feature. Wi-fi Detection won't work for me but at least it is a good extra. Now for something I complain about: PC-Cillin 2005 firewall is TOO quiet. It never gives any alerts to show that it blocks something. ZoneAlarm does a better job. Sadly, when one disables PC-Cillin firewall, the network worm breakout alarm system also shuts down. I would love it if PC-cillin can just shut down the firewall and leave the network worm alrt feature on. Another thing, PC-Cillin 2005 uses MORE resources ONLY WHEN scanning. It is not a huge con, but it is just...disappointing. One more thing: PC-Cillin 2005 does a poor job organizing its features. Inexperienced people will find it very hard to configure the software. Even I find it annoying to search for a specific checkbox. But still, with all these cons, I still like PC-Cillin. It has power. Great power. Like a quiet but tall sturdy giant standing guard of your computer.

Fairly Worthless

Pros: Quick Installation/Looks Nice

Cons: Couldnt use the firewall

Review: I installed/reinstalled 7 times. Never could use the firewall due to some problem with XP. Also prevented windows from auto updated which led to total system failure resulting in complete rebuild. Luckily important files were saved. Paid $39.00 for it but after $200 in repairs it's not worth it. I'm going back to Norton.

Works ok for home user

Pros: no lockups or problems

Cons: Having to restart

Review: Install went fine, user interface was ok. I decided not to deploy this product on our network because every time it updated, you had to restart your computer. This is unacceptable in the business world. Users get really ticked off when they are typing a letter, this screen pops up saying they have to restart WHILE they are typing. Before they can save their work, their machine is shutting down to restart. I reviewed this product for our company and decided against it just because you have to resart after every update.

Excellent overall

Pros: Easy to install, stable, did not slow system, low price

Cons: I have not found any cons yet.

Review: I had Norton's Internet Security Suite installed previously. Norton made my computer literally 50% slower beginning with a very lenghty boot up time. Norton also, at times, will not let me download. Uninstalling Norton was a pain. Trend Micro was an easy install and my system starts and runs quickly - no glitches. It is a full security suite. Highly recommend

Anti-spam not as good as Norton Internet Security's

Pros: Over-all features, ease of set-up & use

Cons: Anti-spam handling

Review: I've had McAfee, Norton, and now PC-cillin versions of internet security suites. PC-cillin's is my favorite due to ease of set-up, ease of use, and total features. The only shortfall is how it handles spam. Norton sends e-mails it has identified as spam to a separate spam folder. You don't have to do anything with them, except to occasionally delete the entire contents of the spam folder. PC-cillin 'stamps' spam with a label, but then sends it right to your In-box, requiring you to still delete each one. Also, Norton installs an add-on which works with Outlook Express. PC-cillin's will only work with the full version of Outlook, but not Outlook Express. Their phone tech support is excellent.

does what it says

Pros: better value than most products out there

Cons: cant get pop ups to stop

Review: Bought 8.10.05- Read cnet review and purchased it based upon their recommendation. Not disappointed-does what it says. Like the product because its like a software buffet and had rebate offer. One thing that is different is that it now scans for virus before installation so the cnet review must of made its way up to the big wigs and suits. Nice to see a big company can listen and improve a product. Easy set up,update and use. I used norton for 6 years and I am just as happy now.

Extremely Thorough, Best All Around So Far...

Pros: Very complete. Covers all your bases. Intuitive. Clean interface.

Cons: Slows computer (don't they all?), spware detection still in its infancy.

Review: Experience
I've used Norton, Grisoft Free AVG antivirus, McAffee, and Trend Micro PC-Cillin and I have to say its the best out of all the above.

1. Intuitive
It's seems to be the most intuitive which is really important for me being the novice computer user. Confusion was half the battle with McAffee and Norton at the time.

However, its not perfect. When it comes to "Private Data Protection", "Wireless Network Protection and Detection".. I'm still lost. I'm not looking for a detailed tutorial. I just want something that will set itself up for me relatively easily. Otherwise, it does this very nicely.

2. Notifications.
The nice things is it lets you know what's going on all the time. This is crucial, mind you. You have to realize you can turn the nonessential notifications off.

Biggest annoyances to be turned off? "virus in wild alerts", "user detected on wireless network" when at starbucks, and MOST OF ALL "Check for updated components?"!!

High recommend turning last one on AUTOMATIC. HIGHLY.

3. Real time Scanning
This has saved me BIG TIME when it comes to viruses. If you are using peer to peer programs or downloading "themes" off websites, its catches the Trojans i'd say 99% of the time. I do download alot and have to say this is the most complete protection I had.

4. Speed
This is one of the more faster programs out there. HOWEVER, is there any antivirus or security program that doesn't SLOW down a computer? No.. if you find it, let me know. I run a Dell Inspiron 9300 2Ghz Pentium M and it can slow me down for sure with Real Time Scanning enabled, not alot but just letting you know its not invisible.

I shut if off when I don't feel at risk and it still scans emails that are scheduled for downloads every 5 minutes.

My Setup
This works well with me and keeps me essentially virus AND spyware free.

Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security, use the spyware option on it after everything else.
Microsoft Antispyware - best so far, can slow you down but very intuitive
Lavasoft Adaware - I run this once a week to cover my bases, catch someting once in awhile.

A well-behaved program

Pros: Ease of installation and configuration

Cons: Default NetBIOS setting

Review: Following the current Zone Alarm 6 update debacle, I have jumped ship and am now kicking myself for having wasted two years on Zone Alarm. PC-cillin is a dream come true in comparison with ZA. It installed quickly and easily and - most important of all to me - it DIDN'T mess up my ICS wireless network. It passed all the tests at www.grc.com with flying colours once I had unchecked incoming NetBIOS on the exceptions list (which is why it gets "only" 9/10). I'm hooked. And as a bonus, it's good value for money.

Works great! Have it loaded on 4 computers at home.

Pros: Quick intrgrated soultion. No major system hogging. Easy updates.

Cons: Customer support ok. Updates take some time.

Review: I have been running one version of PC-c for over 4 years now and have never had a major problem. I am running the 4 computers that range from an A8N-SLI AMD64 Deluxe with 1GB of memory to a DUEL P3 400 with 1GB.

I have read almost of the reviews here by people and have not had any of the resource problems mentioned. The worst I had was it doing updated while playing World of Warcraft. The system got a bit choppy for a bout 10 seconds then it was fine. No crashes. No lock up. No problems.

I will admit I am using the firewall built into my Router but I am using the PC-C fire wall to protect the computers form each other as I have a non-techy girlfriend that sues them some times. They have work well. I caught one attack that got past my router and was stopped by PC-c.
The Virus protection has been great. I works well with Eudora (can't stand Outlook) and has caught a few viruses and take care of them.
I have not really played with the Spy-ware part but I am not seen any thing in my traffic logs that would tell me I got something in there. In previous versions I have used 3rd party Spy-ware blockers. and I am using one now because I'm too lazy to fiddle with it now.

Customer support was ok. I had some issue with updating form an old version and I took about 10 emails for them to figure out that I had and older version. (I did not tell them this in the beginning as I thought and believed from reading that the new registration code would upgrade the old version to the new one. It dose not. You must uninstall the old and then the new before it works.) The emails were a bit basic like "look here". They would send you to their FAQ pages which I had already read. Once I told them I could not find my answer then it became a bit more technical and they ask some better questions. But then that how most Tech support works. =)

I also used Norton and McAfee a work but I like the all in one package and ease of use form PC-C. They could make a few changes and better their support but over all I believe the rating is closer to CNets then the users.

Pros: Powerful Firewall, Spyware Protection, Wi Fi Network Security

Absolutely the best internet security ever

Pros: Emergency Locks....

Cons: haven't found any in 3 years.

Review: I test software programs and PC-cillin is the best on the market today. Tested through the most extreme areas on the internet and still kept all intrusion out of my system. It has a lock-out feature that lets you know someone is trying to intrude into your computer, so you can stop all internet access to or from your computer.

Functional but a resource hog

Pros: easy and simple to use

Cons: takes way to much resources and settings are default to low

Review: My main beef with this suite is that it takes way to much resources and I have 1GB of ram.

It runs 5 processes taking just normally 82MB of ram. This is more than Nortons 2005 and Mcaffee. The main offender is their process tmproxy.exe which takes initially 66MB of ram and can expand to take almost 80MB by itself when running outlook.

As well the default settings are not adequate and I mean that by saying the firewall settings are set to low. So you must go and adjust those to higher level settings. It is almost to simplistic if this could ever be an issue. Regardless I would overlook this if the suite wasn't eating my ram for lunch.

I would say this is an OK suite for the average non techie security savvy user. But at the same time if you are running one of those dell or gateway specials that come with 256MB or 512MB of ram you will find that this beast leaves you not much to run other programs with.

In the end I will not be renewing my subscription and will instead go to some other product.

Spectacular Superior Alternative To McAffe and Norton!

Pros: A first rate price and experience. Award winning Trend Micro? PC-cillin? Internet Security 2005 delivers comprehensive protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, and blended threats like MY DOOM.

Cons: No so good customer service

Review: This is the same antivirus scanner technology Microsoft selected to protect their 187 million Hotmail customers against the threat of email-borne viruses. No longer just a virus scanner, this latest version of PC-cillin also protects you from hackers, privacy threats, and spam. The firewall allows you to adjust security control levels for home, work, and on the road. It proactively warns you about virus outbreaks and scans for them at the network firewall level, where they attempt to penetrate your PC. As with previous versions, you can submit questionable files to Trend Micro's EDoctor Lab, where they are analyzed for viruses. You will be contacted within 48 hours about the status of the submitted file. Wizards walk you through the process of detecting and eradicating computer viruses from your computer, and filtering harmful scripts, Java, and ActiveX programs. Files that cannot be cleaned of viruses are quarantined. In addition, you can use PC-cillin to protect your children from offensive and inappropriate Web sites by controlling which sites they visit.

Incompatible with CheckPoint SecureClient VPN

Pros: Detected the incompatibility before installation

Cons: Would not install

Review: Eager to ditch Symantec NAV I was totally disappointed when the program would not install, showing the message, "Setup has detected conflicting software, Check Point VPN-1 SecureClient.... Uninstall the conflicting application, then restart installation". I can hardly do without my VPN software, so I won't be using PC-cillin.

works great with frequent updates

Pros: havent had a problem with it yet

Cons: sometimes annoying when notifying when busy online

Review: I use this program on my computer as well as my wifes. Had Nortons and zone alarm. This one does both functions well. Ive been using for over 2 months.

Feels less secure than NIS, but unlike NIS I haven't been infected!!!!!!

Pros: Wi-Fi Detection, Firewall Profile Switching for Wi-Fi, Updates Almost Daily, Fast Scanning

Cons: Feels Less Secure than NIS (no warning pop ups), No Active X Blocker, Uses MORE RAM than NIS

Review: Seems to feel less secure than NIS. There are no pop up warnings for things like Active X controls. But, unlike with NIS I have not been infected with anything that I know of. Though the full system scan does not scan everything, so that makes it feel less secure, too.

The Wi-Fi tailored tools are great. No Wi-Fi detection in NIS. It's great that I can see if anyone is using my wi-fi connection for potentially ilicit activity or to hack me. Firewall profile switching is great. When traveling between my home network and public access networks it is nice to know that I can have specaially tailored more secure rules for public network. I like that I can turn off access points that I won't be using on a public networks.

All around I feel less secure, but, then again, I have been using PCC on a wireless laptop for a some months and I have not had a problem and a look into the firewall logs show an almost infinite list of attempts to access my system from outside. There are no blocked events listed in the logs AT ALL for any of the times where I use my laptop on my home network.

Wireless security is now an essential part of personal computing. The other major security suites need to get with the times.

Pros: Will load on shareware and copied o/s so it can show you it has deceted viruses etc.

Cons: No response to my email's from tech. support

Does not live up to the hype.
No support what so ever.

Rebate Rip-Off

Pros: OK product, less of a resource hog than Norton

Cons: The company appears to systematically rip off its customers. Forget about ever receiving your promised rebate.

Review: I purchased a download copy of Trend Micro's Internet Security product because I needed a less resource intensive anti-virus for an aging laptop. It seems to fit the bill for this purpose so I'm giving a two instead of a one.

After submitting all required documentation for the rebate, including mulitple copies of receipts for prior purchases competitor's products, all I received from Trend Micro is a post card indicating they won't send the rebate because they're missing a UPC. Hey Trend Micro, I DOWNLOADED your software and followed your instuctions to a 'T'! There's no box so there's no UPC. Furthermore, no UPC was required for the downloaded product!

Based on multiple other reviews out there, this company makes a habit of ripping off its customers. I recommend avoiding anything from Trend Micro.

Bad customer service

Pros: Sufficient overall virus catcher

Cons: Bad, Horrible customer service

Review: Since the April 22nd bad virus pattern, it has caused problems for multiple people including myself. I called customer support and they indicated that I should uninstall the program and reinstall it. Well, I can't uninstall it with the CPU at 100% and locking. I have posted many comments in the past but CNET has failed to post them. Overall, Trend Micro is having problems with development, customer service, testing and seem to be anti-american per their solution for Japan. Buyer beware!

Excellent component for a secure PC

Pros: Outstanding virus detection and removal. Excellent customer service, informative web site, EASY to use and price to performance is the best in the industry!

Cons: Reporting is a bit lacking for power users and the firewall could offer more features.

Review: Excellent product. I have used eEye's Retina to scan my machine with PC-Cillin installed and it found no vulnerabilities. Retina could not even get past the firewal to see what OS was on the target machine! The user interface is well layed out and informative. I have seen reviews where people are complaining about the products performance. If you spend about fifteen minutes skimming the manual, you would be suprised how easy it is to customize this application to meet you security needs while allowing you use your pc for what you bought it for. Always Read The Manual.

I own all the previous version of PC Cillin

Pros: Easy setup... how the new version work in a home network?

Cons: The home network problems I have.

Review: Well people I have the 2004 version and wrote to Trend Micro regarding my problem to access other computer on my network everytime I activate the firewall.

Up to now it is not working for me and have to rely on XP Firewall instead of Trend Micro as it interfere with my capability to browse my network.

Anyone here having this problems?

Inefficient resource hog

Pros: Easy installation

Cons: Hogs resources, simplistic configuration

Review: I was impressed with cnet's rating of PC-cillin (PC-c) - 8.3, excellent! So I bought 4 licenses for PC-c Internet Security 2005 and replaced Zone Alarm Pro and McAfee VirusScan, respectively. It turned out to be a disaster, although I didn't realize it immediately.

I wasn't happy with the firewall, because it was difficult to tell which programs it was monitoring. Unlike even the free version of Zone Alarm, PC-c hides what it's doing. After digging in the configuration, I learned that PC-c lets anything go out, unless you specifically configure it otherwise. It's hard to figure out what it blocks from coming in. Eventually I got around to doing some research, and I learned that the PC-c firewall was causing a delay of 10-30 seconds when I first accessed other computers on my LAN. I decided to go back to Zone Alarm, starting with the free version (later I bought the pro version). It is much superior.

I stayed with the PC-c virus checker. Then my wife mentioned that her Outlook was loading very slowly, and I knew mine was, too. As a test, I timed loading Outlook with the PC-c virus checker installed and uninstalled. The results were astonishing - 3:03 with and 0:40 without PC-cillin. I checked boot times - 4:24 with and 3:17 without.

Then I discovered an even worse problem. I use a program called SECSIM which simulates Ethernet communications between a host computer and semiconductor processing equipment. I run SECSIM on my laptop, and it had been acting strangely. Although timing is critically important in the application, SECSIM responses were delayed by a factor of 3 to 5. That occurred even after I replaced the PC-c firewall. Then I uninstalled the PC-c virus checker and responses were normal again.

Prior to my tests, I'd had a problem with PC-c's email checking. It had intercepted and destroyed two emails from a trusted source, changing them to text. There is supposed to be a way to recover such messages, but I was unable to do so. I contacted PC-c support twice, and neither time did they address the issue - both responses were basically form letters suggesting basic procedures unrelated to my question.

Now I am using Zone Alarm Pro for my firewall and AntiVir Guard for my virus checker. Performance is excellent. I basically threw away the $80 or so it cost for the PC-cillin licenses, but it was well worth it. If you're thinking about your own use, the freeware version of Zone Alarm is excellent. AntiVir Guard is also free for personal use, and it is superior to any other virus checker I've used (Norton, McAfee, and PC-c).

Maybe the most disturbing thing about my experience is the cnet rating for PC-c. They said specifically that it is easy on system resources, but it really trashed performance on all 4 PCs that I installed it on. I guess I'll go elsewhere for my ratings.

Lame customer service.

Pros: Looks like a great system.

Cons: It crashed my computer. Repeatedly

Review: And when I asked for help, I got NOTHING. I got one of those "take a snapshot of your computer and send it in" messages. I did as instructed, and heard NOTHING for days on end. NOTHING. Finally I replaced these jokers with AVG, which works great, and is FREE.

If this works, great, but don't expect ANY customer service. They've lost my business for good.

Horrific customer support

Pros: Software usually works well

Cons: Non-responsive to customers - Sr.Mgt on down

Review: On April 22, Trend Micro sent out an update that cause 100% CPU utilization for people with Win ME & XP. If you happened to be online within about an hour and a half window, then you were subject to this faulty Internet security update. This cause my hard drive to seize, costing me over $500 in IT repair bills (not to mention 2 days down time and lost data.) I tried to contact the company for months, via phone, email, even sent a certified letter to Lane Best, the company President of their U.S. operation in CA. Not only have I been unsuccessful in getting acknowledged by anyone at the company, but they have ignored requests from the Better Business Bureau of Santa Clara County. I have been advised by the BBB to file a claim in small claims court, but since I live across the country from their HQ that is not a viable solution As a long-time customer, I am appalled at their lack of customer response from the most senior level on down. Especially since they admit they caused the problem. Very disappointing.

In one word: spectacular!

Pros: Finds all; Free Tech support; knowledgable and friendly. They got the answers.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Review: Puts Norton, shameful McAfee and all the rest of those money-grubbing companies to shame. Instead of helping, they get in the way. Once I called Norton and the person on the line after working on trying to get the overly-complex program (Internet Security) to work properly (at $29 a call, mind you) said in exasperation "I don't know what to do!!"?? Heaven help us, and why should I pay money to an idiot???

Get PC cillin and let it do the work for free. And YOU can find it cheap on the internet. The people are extrememly friendly and quick, quick, quick. Got rid of a virus in 1/2 a minute and said goodbye.

Not Ready For Prime-Time!

Pros: Low Price, Easy download and setup

Cons: Not competent in protection, user forced to register

Review: I was seduced by the siren-call of low price and excellent editor reviews. Having utilized ZoneAlarm for the past 3 years, I was used to not paying much attention to my firewall. I now realize that ZoneAlarm was so good, it spoiled me into thinking having a firewall wasn't as essential as it was cracked up to be.

Having purchased a new machine, I decided to purchase PC-Cillin's Internet Security for $9.99. The download and setup operation was smooth and I was prepared to ignore it, just as I had with ZoneAlarm. My mistake. Within 10 minutes of getting online with my LAN connection, an alarming note popped up indicating that an unknown number of computers were currently linking to mine. It then displayed a long list of IP addresses with the current status of the connection with my computer for each one. Needless to say it took me about 3 seconds to turn off the computer and wonder what the hell had just happened.

In the next 15 minutes I had checked my computer to make sure that no trojans or spyware had been loaded and had purchased another copy of ZoneAlarm. I'm now using only the anti-virus portion of PC-cillin.

Even that wasn't trouble-free, as I discovered -- to my annoynance -- that you have to register the software in order to receive updates. Most software packages like this allow you to full use once you've provided the correct serial #/unlock code. I hate going through the additional step of registering, so it was just one more thing I have against this software. Basically, I'm glad I only paid 10 bucks for it.

In conclusion, I'm not saying that this was the worst software I've ever purchased, but it certainly isn't ready for prime time. I would not recommend depending on this software to protect your computer.

Not a good buy Wasted money

Pros: Downloads easy & so-so antivirus

Cons: Scan is very slow

Review: Customer support is nil. Spyware removal is a joke. Stated no spyware, yet Ad-ware found and removed 78. If it finds a trojen but can't be removed or quarantined, you get a pop-up every 3 seconds and you end up pulling the power & re-booting in order to gain control of your computer. They won't get any awards from this buyer.

An Excellent Program and a Great Value

Pros: Excellent anti-virus, good firewall, OK spyware detection and SPAM filter.

Cons: Private Data Protection feature cumbersome to over-ride.

Review: Overall, PC-cillin is a very good program that represents an outstanding value among its peers.

Its anti-virus capabilities are second to none. Its firewall works well out of the box, and its default settings are perfect for users who just want to "set it and forget it". However, by changing the firewall security level to "High" from the default "Medium", users are given much more control as to how their programs access the internet, including the ability to specify ports, protocols, IP addresses and communication direction for each program.

PC-cillin is automatically set up to check for updates on a regular basis, ensuring that its virus definitions and ability to deal with other threats are up to date. However, these settings can also be customized, from having the user prompted for each update check to having the entire process run in the background without the user even knowing that it is taking place.

PC-cillin's spyware detection is adequate, but like most of its comptetitors, there are better stand-alone alternatives available (e.g., Spybot).

Likewise, its SPAM filtering capabilities are simmilar to those of competing products, which means that all SPAM messages are first downloaded to your computer prior to being parsed out to their various folders. Again, there are better stand-alone anti-SPAM programs that filter and delete SPAM emails at the server before they get downloaded (e.g., MailWasher).

The only glaring weakness in the progam is the Private Data Protection feature. If you come to a web site that requires you to enter your email address and your email is part of the data you chose to protect, you have to turn off the data privacy feature completely to finish this entry. While exceptions are made for secure web sites, this feature should be able to be over-ridden with a button in a dialog box and not require that it be shut off each time.

In summary, PC-cillin is an excellent program that can be customized to meet the needs of all types of users. And unlike some other competitors (think yellow box), it impace on system response times is negligible.

It is abolutely worthy of its Editors' Choice rating.

Bye bye Norton and McAfee

Pros: Very user friendly; customer service not an oxymoron

Cons: none so far

Review: Easy to install, easy to configure, easy to maintain. Strong, reliable and doesn't eat up resources like McAfee or Norton. What else is there? I live through my wireless notebook and PC-Cillin is far superior to the Big Two. Norton failed in every aspect and McAfee keeps making you pay long after you've bought the product.

Excellent Product

Pros: Low System Overhead, Fast Scanning, Streamlined Interface

Cons: A little laborious to configure for 1st use

Review: This product is excellent. One of my main complaints of other brands is the high system resources usage. This product requires less system resources and is speedy.

It also has a lot more options and is much easier to configure in the user interface. There is a little time associated with configuring for first use, as many of the options didn't seem to be in the most logical configuration for most users, but not a big deal in comparison.

And, unlike most other "all-in-one" programs, all components seem to be best in class (anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam, wi-fi security)

Beats Norton by a long shot

Pros: pretty good program, quick scans, mostly stays in the background

Cons: rebate service sucks, big time. some proble with registration. program generated popups drive you nuts

Review: Bottom Line:

Pretty good software. One point reduction for each of the problems listed below, pop up generation, registration issues, rebates.

Got this suite after buying Norton Internet Security 2005 (It appears that Norton has self destructed into a big pile of $*&^) So far I fairly impressed with the speed that this program scans. Much quicker than even the past versions of Norton that actually worked.

I can see future versions of this program getting progressively more annoying with pop up "please update for XXXXX virus." So far my only complaint with that is that half the time when I click ok update it pops up another message saying "your already up to date". Also the download screen is a huge pop up, instead of a little icon in the system tray. These may just be the default settings I still need to play with it a bit more.

The pop up thing seems to be a common theme among software makers right now. When are they going to get it, that we don't want to constantly hear from our virus software. We only want to know when there?s a problem. Also, they should know this since this suite comes with a fairly good pop up blocker.

My biggest problem with this suite was registering the multiple users licenses I got with it. I registered in their system when installing the first license, then went over to my other system and installed it. Then I entered my user ID and password, and there was no record of my user ID. This went on for a couple of weeks, during which time their 'e-mail only' tech support mis-understood my progressively simpler explanations. The bad grammar Tech supports was using had me wondering what country they're in.

I finally fixed the problem when an unrelated Windows XP problem forced me to format and re-install on the first computer. I was able to re-register the first license, which somehow fixed the problem with the second license. ????? what's up with that, it's all on their web-site, nothing internal to the program.

I'm not even going to get into the rebate thing, they denied one and lost the other.
Updated
I bought the software in April or March. I just got the rebate check in the mail last week. They must be reading all the "rebate service sucks" reviews. Nothing to really add to the reveiw, no viruses. The download update screen is getting continually more anoing though. Nothing worse than being kicked out of a game by a pop-up telling you to update your virus software. I've had spyware like that before, wonder if that's where they got the idea.

Incompatible with Mozilla Firefox

Pros: Full loaded software but...

Cons: Doesn't work with Firefox browser!

Review: As a firewall, it's time consuming to add safe URLs to the list...and it turns out that it doesn't matter because I'm using Firefox anyways.

For those of you using IE,it would be a nice feature for there to be a rule maker pop up when you try to go to a website, like in Zone Alarm or Tiny Firewall, which creates your list for you depending on your response.

Cons: Costs money

Very good Security Bundle!

Pros: Affordable; Complete; Easy -to-use Interface

Cons: You have to manually enable features; slows down my busy a little bit

Review: A very good deal for $50! I also ordered the EDS just to be on the safe side. The pros far outweighs the cons. If you don't mind manually enabling features ONCE--after your installation (the only time you have to!), and a little slow down on your internet connection (won't really matter esp. with DSL and Cable), then this is the best Security Software just about for everyone! I recommend it!

No customer support

Pros: Easy install & use

Cons: When trouble occurred, no replies to queries.

Review: Installed PC cillin in July of 2004. It seemed to provide very good protection until a few months ago when I attempted to do a clean up of my hard disk. The program did not completely uninstall, leaving one file in the system which I could not remove. This prevented a re-install. I now had no firewall, no virus protection. Twice I e-mailed customer support - no reply.

It was good "while it was good!" But, when I needed them, Trend Micro let me down. I know they were really busy, what with that big screw up with the "upgrade", and getting 2005 out. But I can't out in the cold & wait. Downloaded Computer Associates one year freeby & seem to have started anothe "romance." Hope this one goes the distance.

best bang for the buck, excluding freeware.

Pros: a completely intergrated package that works well together

Cons: the 2005 version has no configuration button that says "in and out" when configuring a firewall port. That means two steps if you want to open both.

An Excellent Feature Rich Product

Pros: Security Check Feature, Quick Scans, Plenty of scan updates!

Cons: Some of the updates can take awhile on dial up.

Review: This is a well rounded product, with a customizable firewall, a security check, which will let you know if windows has available security patches and it even finds security flaws in MSN messenger. This also has a password protection feature, so that you can set a certain security level, and no one in your house hold, or a visitor can change the setting without the password. You can block undesirable web pages from being viewed, set up firewalls on wireless connections, and set security up to prevent your personal information from being accessed through e-mail phishing etc. I've used previous versions of PC-Cillin and Norton Anti-virus, but PC-Cillin Internet Security 2005 is far and away is the best!

This program crashed my computer! Beware!

Pros: Low CPU use, easy install

Cons: Virus Update crashed my computer; Expensive; Company doesn't test update files before releasing to public.

Review: I have NAV 2003 and downloaded trial to switch over. That was until April 22, when the auto update downloaded a new set of Virus files which crashed my computer. I had no idea what it was until I reformated my computer and visited the Trend Micro website and I saw this link:

http://www.trendmicro.com/en/support/pattern594/overview.htm

Consumers should not deal with a company that distributes update files without proper testing. I wasted an entire weekend trying to figure out what was wrong with my computer until I had to reformat. They didn't even email me to tell me that I may have downloaded a bad file.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!

Hey! Scans CAN be scheduled to run automatically after install!

Pros: Easy to set up, barely need the instruction booklet (but is helpful).

Cons: Anti-spam can be a pain (installation isn't recommended). You have to set up many options if you installed everything, but is easy to do.

Review: I read CNETs and the user reviews after I ordered the suite and I got scared because it was mentioned that there isn't a scheduler feature in the program. I got the program, set it up, and read the manual to make sure that I got everything and under "Safe Computing Practices" (p. 1-12) it states to Set scheduled scan tasks. I went to the Main Menu, clicked on System (on the side) and there it was, Scan Tasks. You can schedule a daily, weekly, or monthly scan. PC-cillin uses a military time format so, midnight scans will be "0:00". Plus it has a real-time scan option (a constant monitoring of the PC) with a "turbo scanning" option (where it only scans files that has been changed in some way since the last full scan, so the same unused files won't be scanned over and over again) so if you're not a "control freak" :), this is all you'll need.

There is a program called "Anti-Spam for Outlook" on the CD that is outdated (as of 12/31/04). I don't recommend installing this since Outlook will be S-L-O-W to load (and I have a GB of memory). Trend only offers a beta verson currenly so I just uninstalled the old program and left the beta alone.

Hope this helps.

All in one that goes easy on the resources.

Pros: Very comprehensive. Easy on your computer.

Cons: Firewall interface could use help, it isn't as user friendly as zone alarm.

Review: Now i can work on my computer while my computer is being checked for viruses, unlike norton. and plus i get an all-round protection. My only gripe is that the firewall isnt as easy to change around as you can in ZA, but maybe i am being biased to ZoneAlarm, but hey it gave me free protection for so long.
The Pc-cillin upgrade and subscription renewal prices are lot cheaper than Norton and McAfee Anti-virus. And keep in mind that Pc-cillin is an all-rounder.

Beware, for the moment at least

Pros: Relatively low cost w/current rebates

Cons: Issues out of the box, computer lock-up, slow-down etc.

Review: Have been on the phone for over an hour with tech support. They did not ask when program was installed, though I told them it was today, it wasn't until halfway through the process that he asked "when did your computer begin to slow down?" When I told him after installation today he said, "you installed it today?" It may be working better now by disabling the proxy service, but does this defeat the functionality of the program? Not sure yet, but I guess we'll see.

Missed a nasty trojan

Pros: didn't mess with my system

Cons: didn't keep out trojan

Not so sure anymore

Pros: Not a resource hog, appears to work well

Cons: Slows down login time, unreliable updates

Review: I have been using PC-cillin for about 3 months now, and have been relatively happy with it, especially when compared to Norton and Panda that I previously used.
It was an easy install and seems to not interfere with applications as much as some others. Scans quickly, doesn't noticeably affect mail or interent browser speeds. Does slow down login and logout slightly. Updates are convenient.
However; Apparently Friday night an update was pushed which caused my laptop to lock up upon login. After several hours of debugging, I relented and started reloading XP and applications. Last night I ran across a thread on a listserver indicating there was a bad file pushed by Trend that caused a problem for many users including me. Trend never notified the registered user base of the problem. I find this unacceptable for an antivirus software vendor. Not only did they disable my computer but they failed to tell me after they realized the problem, leaving the diagnosis and fix to chance. Yes, they published a fix on their support site Friday night but who would have figured an antivirus would cause a freeze on login? They have lost my trust.

Best Bang for the Buck!

Pros: Easy to load and Easy to use. AV is outstanding.

Cons: Very basic firewall and spam programs.

Review: I bought this after being initially dissappointed in Panda Platinun 2005 because of the latters heavy configuration needs. This Trend Micro product certainly doesn't have that as an issue. If anything, it's almost too easy to set up. It left me wondering exactly what the software was doing. The Firewall is so basic that I went to http://grc.com just to see if it was actually working. It was working great! I like the parental control features so I use this software on my daughters computer. It has replaced Norton Systemworks, Norton Internet Security AND Net Nanny. I tried to log on to some questionable sites and immediately recieved a hand slap and a notice from Trend that a no-no had occurred. This is a great product for a basic user who has kids in the house as well as anybody who appreciates a basic but solid product.

Ok, I admit it! I was WRONG. This program beats Panda Platinum 2005 and eTrust Internet Security 2005 hands down. I LOVE this firewall. I don't have to waste time doing configurations like the Zone Alarm in eTrust or the Sygate in Panda. It is practically effortless in all respects. And yes, it can be configured just about any way you want. The interface is easy to understand, the additional SPAM software works as it should, the URL filter is way better than Net Nanny. The e-mail filter and Spyware software works great. The Anti-Virus is "fast" in Turbo mode! I just can't think of anything bad to say about this product. And oh yes, it cost much less than the others which doesn't hurt a bit!

Will be the best of 2006 and 2007 and so on

Pros: Destroy any virus, Fast scanning, very configurable

Cons: spyware scan it's a bit weak. but no problem

Review: This antivirus which is updated everyday, sometimes twice a day, is the best i've tested.
It consumes little system resources, very fast at the scans, and we can configure first and second action to take when a virus is found. That's what i like in antivirus, the ability to choose the actions. Imagine you have an antivirus that founds some kind of virus, and then it displays the following "The virus was not desinfected" and the "OK" button. What's the point? is this an antivirus? yes i'm talking about Norton.
But Pc-cillin removes all the infections, whatever they are. It's firewall passes all the tests, and it's very very easy to create rules! the spyware scan cannot be compared with ad-aware or something like that, but that's ok, it destroys the major spyware.
Trend micro will always win the championship, and norton will always get down..down.. untill they realize that we don't have 5 GB of ram, nor 5 GZ processor

Best on the market

Pros: Fixed the registry

Cons: Spyware search is done separately

Review: I bought Pc-cillin for two reasons. First, they have live support. Second, according to cnet, this product does the best job cleaning the registry. They were right.

Prior to the installation I was running Norton Utilities. I had another week left on that subscription. I was frustrated because my homepage got hijacked. Norton wasn't able to get it back. Spybot didn't work. I made the switch and had an easy time installing Pc-cillin. The first scan picked up the problem and fixed the registry editor.

Best Security Package On The Market!!

Pros: Excellent scanning, small system footprint, WiFi Intrusion detection.

Cons: Firewall could be a little more user friendly

Review: This is by far the best security package on the market. I'm replacing Norton system works with this. Norton drove me cazy trying to install on a new computer, I finally gave up. Also, Norton uses so much system resource it drags the whole system down. PC-Cillian has a much smaller footprint. For the price you can't go wrong with this package.

By far the best!!

Pros: Updates every 3 hours, no viruses since install, unlike Norton

Cons: Do not know of any

Review: This is the best home security suite on the market. Norton and McAfee, look out. This new kid on the block is kicking your butts!!!!

Finally, say goodbye to Norton and McAfee!

Pros: Speedy virus scans, great price, full featured for the most part.

Cons: Lacks feature-set of Norton's AntiSpam/Firewall...

Review: Excellent software, I'm very impressed.

Very very basic

Pros: Fast scanning AV with lots of small add ons

Cons: A complicated and pesty firewall, basic Antispam tools, cruddy AntiSpam

Review: I downloaded a trial version of this product that I wasn't very pleased with, but found it decent enough to pass. To put it blunt, it was so average. Very basic.

The AntiVirus on-demand scan has a few minor features about it that make it what it is and not junk. Such as an option to automaticaly shut down the computer after finishing checking the system for viruses. (Very good for an on the run type user) The scanning speed was also impressive, although NOD32 remains the fastest in the wild west. However, it missed a virus that was dated back to 2004. (After uninstalling the product I reinstalled MIS 2005 and while during an on-demand scan, VirusScan found the year-old virus PC Cillin aparently missed during my week of it's usage.)

The firewall was similar to that of Norton Personal Firewall 2004 but with a differnt look and design and fewer features. It also did not seem to block as much traffic for me as ZA and MPF did for me. And when set on the option for higher security, it seemingly pestered me more than any firewall I've ever used, even compared to other firewalls set on tighter security. It also was a bit more confusing and ''geeked out'' than other firewalls. Although after taking some time and paying attention I got it figured out with relative ease.

The AntiSpam was very basic. One may find a better AntiSpam tool from Norton, McAfee or even one of those smaller companies based on AntiSpyware and AntiSpam.

The privacy options such as web content filtering was not turned on by default and was not tested during my trial period.

Aside from the drawbacks here and there, this was a very standard and basic like security suite. If one is looking for something basic than this would be a good choice.

It does too have automation past install, and a Turbo Scan to boot!

Pros: Finds viruses Norton doesn't 95% of the time! Best on the market.

Cons: Maybe the firewall could be more user friendly.

Review: Great product! This scanner has detected and cleaned viruses on client's computers that were using Norton time and again. The Turbo Scan feature is the best improvement since last edition (2004). Good spyware scanner included! Firewall has several presets that prove useful for newbies.

Something when awry when loaded with XP Home Edition

Pros: Right now I am too frustrated to give a pro

Cons: Too many Emergency Warnings that lock up usage of computer until one closes the pop up window with the warning

Review: Ever since I loaded it on my computer, I cannot shut down or have my computer go into hibernation -- it simply hangs up and the power on/off button on my computer no longer works either. The only way I can shut down at the moment is to turn off at the power/surge strip -- very inconvenient!!!

A Perfect Internet Security Software

Pros: User-friendly interface and lots of function at a afforable price

Cons: Not if I know-none

Review: Do not understand why would some of the users rate this wonderful program badly. I have been using this 2nd year in a row and found its interface to be more user-friendly than any antivirus program in the market. If only they will explore deeply and understand each of the tools well they would understand that this is indeed a very good and value for money program. I would strongly recommend Trend Micro Pc-Cillin Internet Security 2005 for those looking for a reliable All in One Antivirus program.

Worthless software as a security package

Pros: Fast antivirus scanning

Cons: Firewall, antispyware, spam, privacy, sections are worthless!

Review: I purchased this software after reading the favorable reviews of it. It installed with no problems. After the installation, I had to go to each section and then the subsection to set up each security section.

The antivirus works quickly, but with the downloads, it tends to use quite a bit of resources and slows the cpu down.

The spyware section is a joke. On the home page for it, the first sentence states that there is no quarantine for any spyware that you may delete. It states in bold print that whatever you delete, you will not be able to get back. It tells you to read up on the spyware completely before any deletion. What anti-spyware is worth anything, if you cannot fix what is deleted? The information is presented in a confusing manner.

The firewall is useless and fails many of the Gibson Research Tests. It also does not work with any Print Servers or Cable Modem setups. I spoke to their Tech Support ref this, and they were unable to give a good direct answer, besides "I do not know". The only way I could get the Print Server to work, was if I shut the firewall down. Worthless I would say.

The privacy section is also worthless. You are required to enter the personal info that you want kept privately. But whenever you are surfing the web, and there are any numeral matches or name matches, a Trend Micro warning box pops up and the screen freezes. The only way you can continue surfing the web is if you work your way through all the subsections to get back to the subsection of the privacy page and then shut down the privacy personal info section. Then you must work your way back to your prior web page and continue. But, remember, when you are done surfing that area, you must go back to the privacy section and turn it back on. What a pain. Why can they not have a shutdown button on the warning box, so you can temporarily shut it down and it can restart over. It was such a pain to use, I just left it off and used the Zone Alarm privacy section which was much more convenient.

The spam section was useless also. You would have to go to the Outlook Express area and set up another folder and make it the Spam folder. Then you would have to go through the motions to set up the spam from Trend Micro to be filtered to that folder. Otherwise if you do nothing, you get nothing for spam assistance from this software. When you receive any mail that Trend thinks is spam, it does nothing more that tag it with the letters SPAM on the heading and forward it to the spam folder that you set up earlier.

Overall, the antivirus was ok, but it does slow the computer down quite a bit. The rest of the suite was lousy.

I would also not use either Norton or McAfee. Both are leaders in having the stores stocked with their boxes, but read the rating from you, the customer. They are poor.

I am currently using Zone Alarm with antivirus. It works quickly, scan quickly and Etrust has favorable reviews from the customers. Being combined with Zone Alarm makes it a good 1 - 2 punch.
Updated
After installing and using this software, the only thing I noticed that this software did for my computer system, was to slow it down so much, that it almost stands still. It also does not allow the firewall to be used on my home network or with my print server. I had to eliminate it from the software and use another software, so the network was accessible.

Tech support is a joke. I called 2 times to speak to someone and the person I was given to, obviously was very new to computers. They appeared to be reading the answers from a book and when I stated I had did what they said to do already, they became confused. It seemed like I threw a wrench into the gears of their machine and everything stopped. After countless attempts to get someone with a little knowledge, I did the only thing I was able to do, to save my sanity. I uninstalled this junk and put it where it needed to go, THE TRASH!

Good for low-end PCs

Pros: Runs in a Light Mode

Cons: Not as thorough or powerful as a Symantec Product

Review: This is a good package for a low end PC or a computer that has low processing power and smaller components. It runs light and boots faster, good spam protection. However, it doesn't have a very good pop-up blocker, doesn't protect from sites that have scripts that open a webpage, change main homepage or email scripts that opens a series browsers. Micro is a good product but I think it would work well for a home user with a low end PC and it definitely works well on a larger network with low to mid range workstation PC's (5 to 20) However, it doesnt have the thoroughness or stability of a Symantec Product, I purchased this item based on CNET's thumbs up. I noticed differences, for one Norton Antivirus is a more complete and stable app and Norton Firewall protection is stronger, has more control. Spam protection is a built-in default with my MS Office programs. I'm used Micro on a Dual Xeon Processor IBM Tower, Microsoft Small Business Server 2003, XP Office Professional. I'll continue use Micro on some of the older and slower machines and keep using Norton for my main systems.

A great software at a great price

Pros: Powerful, lots of user customization, reasonably priced; very frequent updates

Cons: Control panel settings confusing and not adequately documented for the average user

Review: This is my second year with PC-Cillin Internet Security and I've been quite impressed with the product's performance to date. It is loaded with features, and this year's version includes spyware scanning -- an invaluable defense for any internet surfer. Notification pop-ups appear on my screen at least a couple of times a day advising that updates are available (this feature can be turned off or set to auto-update) which leads me to believe the people at Trend Micro are doing their job in supporting this product. The user set-up/control panel on the 2005 version has many improvements and addresses many of the things I found irritating about the 2004 product; however, it still seems to me that much of the user interface is too technical for the average PC owner. If you are challenged to find the on/off switch on your computer, plan on buying your best tekkie friend a really nice lunch in exchange for helping you set up this software. Overall, though, I'm very satisfied with this product. PS: I cannot figure out why the CNET reviewer indicates that this software does not offer automated scanning, because it does offer both a real-time (continuous) scanning option and a fairly elaborate menu of settings for regularly scheduled scans.

missing full feature functionality of some other suites

Pros: good virus program, easy installation and live updating

Cons: lack of info on spyware/coookies it finds so you can't decide whether or not to delete them; no ad blocker; no pop-up blocker; no info on what is being updated when it gets new modules from servers

Review: I switched from Symantec NIS 2004 to PC-cillin IS 2005.

Its difficult to tell how effective the system is. Although no viruses have gotten through, there is little or no information given when it detects an intrusion or outgoing connection attempt, this makes it very difficult to tell whether or not it is a legitmate communication you are trying to make or something someone is trying to make for you. The same is true with the spyware scan, no info on the what it finds (cookies on my computer, but since some are legit I can't delete any of them becuase there's no info associated with them...). The lack of an ad-blocker and pop-up blocker is quite disappointing. I read the Cnet reviews and decided to purcahse and I half regret it.
Updated
Plain and simple, don't waste your time/money on this product.

If you don't mind having to manually intervene multiple times a day to complete "auto" updates, if you don't mind receiving duplicate copies of email tagged as SPAM, if you don't mind having emails that you've reported multiple times for falsely being reported as spam continue to show up (in multiple copies) as spam, if you don't mind having completely useless/blind/unhelpful/unproductive support, then this IS the product for you.

Otherwise, skip it. I wish I had.

Think Twice

Pros: anti-virus = good

Cons: firewall = below average

Review: CNET rating=8.3, CNET users= 7,3. Believe us. I bought this on the hand of the CNET and (eh!!) ZDnet review. Virus count, seems to be good. Pretty much top marks. BUT the firewall is a minimal attempt at something good. John Doe won't ever harden this. The medium security setting is not good enough at all for any broadband/ DSL users. I'm still playing the tightening game here. My advice is that of PC magazine (feb 22nd, 2005)ZoneAlarm Security suite 5.5 score 4.5out of 5, while PC-cillin gets 2.5 out of 5)

Too many pieces not fully finished

Pros: Easy to install and start

Cons: Documentation, flexibility, tech support

Review: Documentation is adequate for a five year old. The web site is adequate for a mentally challenged five year old. I wish their tech support worked with tech products. I wasted my money -- I could have bought a couple of beers.

User Rating: 5/10

No, it doesn't break the bank but it is a resource hog.

Pros: free tech support, reasonable price

Cons: resource hog, large footprint

Review: Based upon a major PC magazine's recommendation, I purchased Trend Micro's PC-Cillin Internet Security Suite 2005 but have come to regret it.

To the point, it's been my experience that even after uninstalling all but the basic antivirus component, the program is a resource hog. In fact, simply loading the antivirus component by itself slowed my system to a crawl. Granted, I run a rather ancient system (PIII 450, 224 MB RAM with Win98), but it did meet all of the requirements as mentioned on Trend Micro's web site and because I've maintained it meticulously, up until installing Trend Micro's product, it's handled every program thrown at it.

Apparently, the notion that multi-function hardware devices are no longer regarded as inferior to individual components does not also apply with respect to all-in-one Internet Security suites. After speaking with a Trend Micro support rep regarding program issues, he even admitted as much: PC-Cillin IS 2005 is mainly an antivirus program and the other components were basically "thrown in" to have it labeled a suite. Essentially, the components aside from antivirus just aren't that good.

Instead, I should've stayed with the apps I already had and have since returned to: Grisoft's AVG 7 (antivirus), Zonelab's Zone Alarm (firewall), Lavasoft's Ad-aware SE, Spybot's Search & Destroy and Javacool Software's SpywareBlaster (anti-spyware), and Python Software Foundation's Spambayes (anti-spam). Best feature of all of these is that they're free.

love it! love it!

Pros: doesn't take an hour to load like NAV.

Cons: seems to have "new updates" 4-7 times/week...and they are NOT small/fast downloads...then again, i have dialup.

Review: Haven't had a virus come through yet...then again, I've used OE 6.0 since it came out and have a rule set up to only allow those in my address book. Haven't had a problem with it yet. CNET states the CON is that it doesn't automatically scan after install...BIG DEAL!!! Must be rough getting paid big bucks to review things and only have one PETTY CON....

thorough protection, great price

Pros: all-in-one internet security, low resource overhead, great price with rebate!

Cons: no ad washing feature

Review: A great product offering full protection (pc passed 6 internet security test with full colours) without drag on resources (unlike Norton!) Easy to install, automatic updates, scans files quickly in background. Works Incredimail. Rebate offered if changing from Norten.

User Rating: 9/10

Great program for every type of user at a spectacular price!

Pros: Very Capable, No Performance Drag, Very Cheap

Cons: No pop-up blocker, Poorly thought out default settings

Review: I thought the CNet review pretty much covered everything accurately. They ought to have a full scan execute automatically after installation, and I can't fathom why they set the spyware blocker off by default. Everything is easy enough to fix, it's really just an inconvenience. Once the program is set up, it works flawlessly, without any false positive alerts as things try to get through the firewall. During installation, the program apparently looks for programs that access the internet either coming in or out. In the menus, there is a simple check box system of allowing you to determine what is allowed and what isn't. This is much different from other systems like ZoneAlarm, which force you to decide if random programs and applets you've never heard of but are nonetheless harmless parts of your browser are allowed to go through the firewall. I noticed absolutely no performance drag using the system, which is different from any other software I've ever used. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this program. If you buy it, don't forget about the $25 rebate if you have other virus software or are upgrading. Off of newegg.com's download, this would allow you to get the software for about $7!
