Setup took just 11 minutes--including a 2-minute preinstall scan--in our tests. The main reason for the speedy setup was that PC-cillin didn't run a postinstallation scan, which we ran manually. (Most antivirus programs also do a full-system scan immediately following installation, and we wish PC-cillin did also.) Including the manual scan, setup time totaled 30 minutes, still much shorter than with Norton AntiVirus 2005, each of which took more than an hour to install. McAfee VirusScan 9.0 installs without prescanning your system and took only 5 minutes in our tests.

The PC-cillin interface is intelligently organized and simple to browse. The main Summary screen provides a quick overview of your computer's protection level: green check-mark icons mean your antivirus, firewall, and other security settings are safe; red exclamation-point icons indicate trouble. A left-side column provides fast access to individual security components, including the e-mail scanner, firewall, and spyware detector. We do have one gripe, however. The spyware feature was turned off by default, forcing us delve into the settings to activate it. Furthermore, the Summary screen gave no indication that spyware detection was off; we discovered this for ourselves.
PC-cillin Internet Security 2005's core strengths include an aggressively low price, a generous assortment of security tools, and speedy, reliable virus scanning.
Spyware scans in PC-cillin operate two ways: either during virus scans or via a separate, spyware-only scan. PC-cillin wisely takes a cautious approach with spyware, a vague (if ominous) term used to describe everything from advertiser-supported software to malicious dialers that surreptitiously connect your PC to pay-per-call sites. When PC-cillin detects potential spyware, it gives you the option of deleting the program or going to Trend Micro's support site to learn more about it. We found that two of three "spyware" threats on our PC were, in fact, adware programs required to run free, ad-supported applications.
PC-cillin 2005 has added some new tools, including Home Network Control, a dialog box that lets you manage the security of all PCs on a home network via a single interface. This feature is easy to use but requires the $89.95 PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 Home Security Pack, which allows you to install PC-cillin on up to three PCs. The new Wi-Fi Intrusion Detection alerts you when a bandwidth thief (or other intruder) enters your wireless LAN and begins surfing your Internet access for free; you can lock out rogue surfers with the click of a button. And the new antiphishing software prevents naive users from surrendering personal and financial information to known rogue sites, by safeguarding personal data such as credit card and social security numbers.
In CNET Labs tests, Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 produced zero system performance drag, equaling EZ Antivirus 2005 in this regard. And PC-cillin also took much less time to scan our 1.3GB hard drive than did F-Secure, Norton, or McAfee. To measure F-Secure's impact on system performance, CNET Labs used BAPCo's SysMark 2002, an industry-standard benchmark. The Internet-content-creation portion of SysMark measures a desktop's performance running off-the-shelf applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. (We did not run the Office Productivity portion of the benchmark because it incorporates McAfee VirusScan 5.13.)
Our test system was a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Professional, with an Intel Pentium 4 1.9GHz processor and 256MB of RDRAM. With PC-cillin running, our test system scored a perfect 100, meaning there was a no reduction in overall system speed. Only one other antivirus product, EZ Antivirus 2005, also scored a perfect 100. By comparison, F-Secure Internet Security 2005 scored a 95, or a 5 percent reduction, while Norton AntiVirus 2005 and McAfee VirusScan 9.0 each scored a 94, or a 6 percent reduction. (An Internet-content-creation score of 100 represents the performance of our test system without any extraneous software running.) In a test of scanning speed, PC-cillin averaged a speedy 2.4 minutes, again rivaled in speed by only EZ Antivirus 2005.
|
In past VirusBulletin tests since November 2000, the Windows desktop version of PC-cillin has been tested 6 times and has passed 5. By comparison, over the same period, Norton AntiVirus has been West Coast Checkmark, ICSA Labs, and Checkvir.com.
In informal testing, PC-cillin's firewall received a thumbs-up from ShieldsUp, the Gibson Research Corporation site that tests a PC's protection against unwanted intrusions via the Net. PC-cillin protected our test computer's data during the test. In comparison, VirusScan no longer includes a firewall, and Norton AntiVirus, which never included a firewall, comes instead with a limited port-blocking technology that proved not as secure as a full-strength firewall in ShieldsUp testing.
Trend Micro delivers what the rest of the antivirus pack won't: free phone support. And since the company also provides a toll-free number for its U.S. customers, the call's on their dime, not yours. We found wait times to be very brief--a minute or less--during regular business hours, and the Trend Micro tech staff was polite and knowledgeable. Phone support hours are weekdays, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
Unlike McAfee, Trend Micro doesn't offer online chat, but its e-mail support is available 24/7. E-mail queries are addressed quickly; in one instance, we received a reply within 11 hours. The PC-cillin support site is well organized and contains the usual assortment of tech tips and virus alerts.

Horrible Customer Service
Pros: Decent Software
Cons: Have had horrible customer service with the rebate department
I have been very happy with Symantec Norton Internet Security in the past and I am going to go back to them. I have received great customer service with Symantec in the past and this being my first impression of trendmicro, I'm not impressed. Don't deal with this company, Symantec is better.

Not worth the aggravation
Pros: low cost and installed easily
Cons: ineffective anti-virus, poor customer support
You cannot then manually move the infected file to the quarantine folder.
You have to manually delete the file, if you can find it. It is not always where the software specifies.
The anti-spy ware never finds anything, so you have to run Ad-Aware or Spybot.
The firewall is nothing but trouble, if you need to access your home pc when away. Customer support is of little or no help.

Great Stuff!
Pros: Not Available
Cons: Not Available
The anti-virus and anti-spam are great, but initial setup isn't as clean as I like it. However the directions are very clear on what to do. However, if you use the full Outlook client, there's no problem.
Like all the anti-spyware products out there, it's not 100% effective, but then none of them are. As I've used this new version over the past several months, it has been stopping more and more.
Overall, a great product!!!

You'll wish you had a virus - DO NOT BUY
Pros: fairly non-intrusive robust virus protection
Cons: updating the software the worst experience of your life
If you got a virus, there would be less pain in low-level formatting your drive, installing the OS and and all applications, cutting your hair, painting your car, and going into the witness protection program.
Example: I install and upgrade the software and the console shows the new version but the subscription is lapsed so you can't get new patterns or programs. But you just upgraded? What? Hmmmm. Call support. You deal with support to and you can count on dozens of emails. Honestly. I'll have a thread where I'll attach screen shots showing this incredibly simple situation and they'll ask for my serial number. Again. Even though it is in the thread 10+ times. You can't even start a thread w/o it and they ask for it. So you give and they say, "Your subscription is expired" and give a link to buy an upgrade. Which is what you already did. You give them screen shots of your order confirmation and the their own support website showing that you are a legit customer and they give you a link to buy the upgrade.
Think about that! That is the issue and after 12-15 emails the dip on the other end has completely missed the point. So you start again. I'm not kidding in that you can go on for months like this. They did this to me with 2003 and 2004 and both times I only got it working when they told me to uninstall and gave me a new product (as opposed to the upgrade). But this was a Hoover Dam type effort.
Just to be clear, I own everything. I have three computers running XP and run Linux on two others in this house am proficient in software and hardware. I have a Masters in EE and am a semiconductor designer.
Don't ever, ever, ever, ever buy this product. You will rue the day.

Way better than norton, but not as good as i would like
Pros: works wells, minimal bugs, much better than norton
Cons: cannot renew subscription, cannot setup security safe zones, a pain to install
i am a computer consultant so i work a lot with internet security packages. i moved to trend because i lost too many customers using norton product. norton used to be good a few years ago but now i think they put out bloated, buggy software. more specific, i ran into the following problem with norton products: 1) bog down system performance in a big way 2) all of a sudden stop updating themselves for no reason 3) removal can be a nightmare. sometimes removing norton would absolutely ruin a system to the point where i would have to rebuild the system from scratch. and these are just the problems that immediately come to mind. in my opinion, norton products are unacceptable (not just their security products).
so, i moved to trend micro. clearly much better then norton. i noticed very few bugs with trend micro, which is unusual for a security suite. but there are a few things i don't like: 1) you cannot setup a trusted zone like you can under zonelabs products or norton products. trusted zones are great because they allow you to define systems which you want minimal security (ie systems on your LAN that you want to share files and printers), but allow you to keep tight security for everyone else. 2) when trend comes out with a new version, you cannot renew your subscription on an older version. you must remove the old version and reinstall a new version. total pain in the ass, especially since their products take so long to install. this means you could end up removing and reinstalling the application every year. i cannot believe you cannot just renew. 3) installation takes a long time and is kind of a pain. you have to install, then reboot, then register, then download latest updates, then reboot again, then you have to customize the settings (i don't like their defaults. for instance by default the software does not update itself!). too much work. should be much easier/quicker to install. 4) trend micro doesn't have a good summary screen that tells you all you want to know on a single screen. you must go to one obscure area to find out when you subscription expires, another to find out if real time protection is on, etc. they should have one easy to read/access summary screen with all this information like norton (one of the few strengths that norton has).
so, alas, trend is not quite as good as i would like. way better than norton, but i still hope there is better. now i am looking at zonelabs AV suite. so far it looks really good. it is reasonably priced (their full security suite is expensive but i don't think it is necessary. i think the AV suite is adequete). and no question the zonelabs firewall is second to none. easy to setup, quite customizable, and nice and secure. i have a feeling that the zonelabs is the way to go but i need to try it out for a few weeks.

A revolving door for virii
Pros: Minimal packaging; low price
Cons: It does not work
The incident in question involves two stages - the first was the infection and the second was some of the worst technical support I have encountered.
The system in question is a Windows 2000 box that was fully patched (according to Windows Update) 3 hours before the infection. Trend Micro was patched fully 1 hour before the infection.
The infection itself happened through a Redirect (which TM logged but did not stop) while running IE. This redirect dropped pcs_0002.exe unto the system (pcimedia.com), which is a payload system. The payload in this case was a Klez varient. The damage was extensive. The best TM managed was to log the initial redirect - no stop or warn, just log.
After that we began the process of contacting TM for solutions. This proved to be worse than anything I could imagine. Our emails were met with returned form letters not even tailored to the actual body of our message - just a drop return with a name slapped at the bottom. However it was in phone support that lay the real mess.
The first 3 people we talked to could not carry on an English conversation. The 4th person we got could at least be understood, but could not even understand what her PC screen was telling her. She kept stammering over the terms and once she actually said bye in the middle of reading something off to my wife then disconnecting the call.
Over a week later and we have yet to find a single competent person in their tech support phone line or is answering emails. The best we have managed is to get a copy of HiJack This!

PC-cillin 2005 should be taken off the market
Pros: Well photographed pictures on the box
Cons: too numerous to list
In my opinion, PC-cillin 2005 should be taken off the market.
I have owned PC-cillin 2005 for about two months and have experienced very annoying problems with different aspects of the program.
Because of rebates, I was able to aquire my copy of PC-cillin 2005 for free. Because of the problems I've experienced with PC-cillin, even though I didn't pay anything for it, I still think I spent too much money! It's really that bad.
What I want to know is how the reviewers at CNET could possibly give this program an excellent review.
The following was added December 6th, 2005:
In an almost desperate attempt to understand why the CNET Editors gave PC-cillin such high marks, I removed the program on one of my two computers which seemed to be conflicting with PC-cillin. That program is Ghost Surf by Tennebril. Another problem on this same computer was that almost anytime any other program would be either installed or uninstalled, Windows would stop recognizing that PC-cillin was installed and signs would post which read something to the effect of 'Windows does not find virus protection' and 'Windows does not find a firewall'. Oddly enough, even though Windows did not recognize an installed firewall, it did not activate the Windows firewall.
This same computer was new having never had any firewall (except Windows) or virus protection prior to PC-cillin.
On my other computer, PC-cillin was installed and has never been recognized by Windows. The PC-cillin Trend Micro Techs told me this is a problem with Windows in that sometimes Windows does not recognize PC-cillin is installed. I have a question: Why is that most of the time Windows recognizes PC-cillin is installed on one of my computers and yet, Windows does not recognize PC-cillin on my other computer? It would seem to me that if this situation were a "Windows problem", it would be consistant and act a certain way all the time. But, maybe I'm wrong about that. I don't know.
This second computer (the one where Windows does not recognize PC-cillin at all) had a long history with McAfee virus scan and firewall. Before the installation of PC-cillin, I cleared McAfee from everywhere I could think of including the registry. It is possible that the reason Windows does not recognize PC-cillin is installed is due to McAfee security having been installed on the computer previously. I spent a long time clearing McAfee from the computer and if any remnant of McAfee was left behind, I can't imagine where.
I wasn't particularly fond of McAfee either but one thing I will say in it's favor is that there was never any problem with Windows recognizing it was installed on the computer.
If, indeed, this problem of Windows not recognizing the existance of PC-cillin was only extant on the computer which formerly had McAfee security, I would blame the fact that McAfee was previously installed (and there must be some remnant of it left?)for this problem. However, this problem also exists intermittantly on the other computer which never had any other security system prior to PC-cillin.
The following are occassions when PC-cillin ceases to be recognized by Windows on the computer which was new when PC-cillin was installed:
The use of Tennebril Ghost Surf;
The installation of a program (not consistant, happens about 75% of the time);
The uninstallation of a program (not consistant, happens about 75% of the time);
The use of Yahoo Messenger (about 50% of the time).
In it's favor, I will say that the automatic PC-cillin updates work very well. They seem to be trying to keep the virus protection up to date. I try to give credit where it is due but I would still advise against the idea of installing PC-cillin on your computer, based on my experience with it.
I was finally able to "straighten out" the situation with PC-cillin to the extent that the 2005 version became more acceptable to me. For this reason, I decided to give the 2006 version a try because I was told the 2006 version was greatly improved as compared to the 2005 version. I found this to be true in both the 2006 as well as the 2007 versions and now would highly recommend PC-cillin.
In the final analysis, the 2005 version of PC-cillin eventually became more acceptable to me with the help of Trend Micro Techs. For this reason and because I was told the 2006 version was a vast improvement as compared to the 2005 version, I decided to try the 2006 version which I liked very much. As a matter of fact, I was so impressed with the 2006 version of PC-cillin that I decided to install the 2007 version.
My current opinion of the 2006 and 2007 versions of PC-cillin is completely different than the low opinion I had of the 2005 version, initially. Now, I give the 2006 and the 2007 versions my highest recommendation. It's a great program and the Trend Micro Tech customer service is excellent.

Resource hog? Dump your Commodore 64.
Pros: Excellent antivirus; plays well with others
Cons: I agree the spyware/spam isn't as good as it should be
I've been using PC-cillin for 4 years now. Tried (at various times) Norton and McAfee... lots of conflicts and hassles. PC-cillin has kept me and my small network totally virus-free, and has created no software conflicts (and I try out a lot of software.)
I know what Gibson Research says, but between Trend Micro's firewall, my router firewall, and PC-cillin, I've had 0 infections, and no intruders have come in on any of my computers. I think that says a lot. I do use a separate spyware program, but I think PC-cillin is still a good value.
Now if Trend can get the other aspects of their software to make the grade...

Buyer Beware
Pros: Solves some of the problems it should
Cons: Spyware scanning so poor it amounts to false advertising
My PC picked up the bogus "Spy Sherriff" virus and was almost crippled, so I downloaded PC-cillin on the basis of CNET's praise and the $25 rebate, which requires you send in evidence of a similar product already purchased by them or a couple of other software providers, and takes an absurdly long time to process, so the rebate process is certainly not straightforward.
First thing I noticed was that I had to also install freeware - spybot and ad aware - to remove Spy Sherriff, something PC-cillin should have been able to do on it's own.
Second, the software prompts you to upgrade ABSURDLY often, many times a DAY, even if you JUST FINISHED UPDATING, and the manual scans are lengthy and burdensome, BUT DO THEN NOT CLEAN MY MACHINE.
It seems beyond dispute to me that anyone who writes a piece of software that prompts to be upgraded several times an hour is criminally insane, but I digress.
Most of my time with my PC is spent dealing with this nonsense now instead of using the net or email.
I suppose more sophisticated PC users would benefit much more from PC-cillin (CNET didn't rate it highly for nothing, I'm sure), but I would suggest less savvy users investigate carefully before choosing this product.

Excellent Control over Virus and Firewall Components
Pros: Real Support - Best from Novice to IT Pro
Cons: Privacy Component
The Virus Real time Agent is updated many times per day and is lightening quick to act on a New Threat encountered via HTTP/S or IRC.
The Scan Facility is fully flexible offering the user an unlimited range of target files and frequency.
The Security Scan alerts you to new updates available from Microsoft but absent from you PC.
The Spyware Scan is effective and whilst is may not catch all threats ? severe threats are identified.
The predefined URL filter is accurate in its ability to guard again unwanted sites by category and can offer a degree of parental control.
By far the most impressive feature is the firewall component. There are 4 predefined profiles offering the basics of core protection for the type of environment from a direct connection to a wireless PC. Impressive control is offered at the file, application or global level, the direction of the source packet and includes ICMP as well as TCP/UDP/ANY targeting.
There is NO guesswork as to allow/disallow warnings unlike other popular firewalls and you don?t need a degree in comms to decide weather to all or disallow any firewall warning. The beauty of every warning is that the actual application requesting access is identified by program Icon, application AND file. A novice user can easily identify with the program Icon requesting access and does not really need to know anything about the associated file to make an informed decision. The firewall offers compatibility with SP2 for double protection and there is WI-FI warning to advise of any unwanted access by unauthorized wireless access.
The private data security is disappointing.
Support ranges from exceptional for UK/Asia based to just o.k for US based, however if you should be the victim of a New Virus, Trend Labs offers exception, non fee based analysis which a very welcome commitment to real product support and Multi user License packs are easy to purchase.
Conclusion: Once established, you wont spend your life looking after/guessing how to use the 2 most important components the Virus/ Firewall features and this offering from Trend Labs is the beginning of a vast range of small network to enterprise management tools.

Would say 9, but this is to partially negate that idiot who gave it a 2.
Pros: Fast, easy to use, eats less resources than Norton, and few problems, if any to report
Cons: Doesn't have any of those few extra system-cleaning/optimizing features Norton has, but can't complain!
My only complaint is that the firewall is too "automatic." Norton allowed its user to decide which applications could be blocked or allowed upon whim through simply manually accessing norton's worm protection settings.

Extremely Thorough, Best All Around So Far...
Pros: Very complete. Covers all your bases. Intuitive. Clean interface.
Cons: Slows computer (don't they all?), spware detection still in its infancy.
I've used Norton, Grisoft Free AVG antivirus, McAffee, and Trend Micro PC-Cillin and I have to say its the best out of all the above.
1. Intuitive
It's seems to be the most intuitive which is really important for me being the novice computer user. Confusion was half the battle with McAffee and Norton at the time.
However, its not perfect. When it comes to "Private Data Protection", "Wireless Network Protection and Detection".. I'm still lost. I'm not looking for a detailed tutorial. I just want something that will set itself up for me relatively easily. Otherwise, it does this very nicely.
2. Notifications.
The nice things is it lets you know what's going on all the time. This is crucial, mind you. You have to realize you can turn the nonessential notifications off.
Biggest annoyances to be turned off? "virus in wild alerts", "user detected on wireless network" when at starbucks, and MOST OF ALL "Check for updated components?"!!
High recommend turning last one on AUTOMATIC. HIGHLY.
3. Real time Scanning
This has saved me BIG TIME when it comes to viruses. If you are using peer to peer programs or downloading "themes" off websites, its catches the Trojans i'd say 99% of the time. I do download alot and have to say this is the most complete protection I had.
4. Speed
This is one of the more faster programs out there. HOWEVER, is there any antivirus or security program that doesn't SLOW down a computer? No.. if you find it, let me know. I run a Dell Inspiron 9300 2Ghz Pentium M and it can slow me down for sure with Real Time Scanning enabled, not alot but just letting you know its not invisible.
I shut if off when I don't feel at risk and it still scans emails that are scheduled for downloads every 5 minutes.
My Setup
This works well with me and keeps me essentially virus AND spyware free.
Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security, use the spyware option on it after everything else.
Microsoft Antispyware - best so far, can slow you down but very intuitive
Lavasoft Adaware - I run this once a week to cover my bases, catch someting once in awhile.

Works great! Have it loaded on 4 computers at home.
Pros: Quick intrgrated soultion. No major system hogging. Easy updates.
Cons: Customer support ok. Updates take some time.
I have read almost of the reviews here by people and have not had any of the resource problems mentioned. The worst I had was it doing updated while playing World of Warcraft. The system got a bit choppy for a bout 10 seconds then it was fine. No crashes. No lock up. No problems.
I will admit I am using the firewall built into my Router but I am using the PC-C fire wall to protect the computers form each other as I have a non-techy girlfriend that sues them some times. They have work well. I caught one attack that got past my router and was stopped by PC-c.
The Virus protection has been great. I works well with Eudora (can't stand Outlook) and has caught a few viruses and take care of them.
I have not really played with the Spy-ware part but I am not seen any thing in my traffic logs that would tell me I got something in there. In previous versions I have used 3rd party Spy-ware blockers. and I am using one now because I'm too lazy to fiddle with it now.
Customer support was ok. I had some issue with updating form an old version and I took about 10 emails for them to figure out that I had and older version. (I did not tell them this in the beginning as I thought and believed from reading that the new registration code would upgrade the old version to the new one. It dose not. You must uninstall the old and then the new before it works.) The emails were a bit basic like "look here". They would send you to their FAQ pages which I had already read. Once I told them I could not find my answer then it became a bit more technical and they ask some better questions. But then that how most Tech support works. =)
I also used Norton and McAfee a work but I like the all in one package and ease of use form PC-C. They could make a few changes and better their support but over all I believe the rating is closer to CNets then the users.

Functional but a resource hog
Pros: easy and simple to use
Cons: takes way to much resources and settings are default to low
It runs 5 processes taking just normally 82MB of ram. This is more than Nortons 2005 and Mcaffee. The main offender is their process tmproxy.exe which takes initially 66MB of ram and can expand to take almost 80MB by itself when running outlook.
As well the default settings are not adequate and I mean that by saying the firewall settings are set to low. So you must go and adjust those to higher level settings. It is almost to simplistic if this could ever be an issue. Regardless I would overlook this if the suite wasn't eating my ram for lunch.
I would say this is an OK suite for the average non techie security savvy user. But at the same time if you are running one of those dell or gateway specials that come with 256MB or 512MB of ram you will find that this beast leaves you not much to run other programs with.
In the end I will not be renewing my subscription and will instead go to some other product.

Feels less secure than NIS, but unlike NIS I haven't been infected!!!!!!
Pros: Wi-Fi Detection, Firewall Profile Switching for Wi-Fi, Updates Almost Daily, Fast Scanning
Cons: Feels Less Secure than NIS (no warning pop ups), No Active X Blocker, Uses MORE RAM than NIS
The Wi-Fi tailored tools are great. No Wi-Fi detection in NIS. It's great that I can see if anyone is using my wi-fi connection for potentially ilicit activity or to hack me. Firewall profile switching is great. When traveling between my home network and public access networks it is nice to know that I can have specaially tailored more secure rules for public network. I like that I can turn off access points that I won't be using on a public networks.
All around I feel less secure, but, then again, I have been using PCC on a wireless laptop for a some months and I have not had a problem and a look into the firewall logs show an almost infinite list of attempts to access my system from outside. There are no blocked events listed in the logs AT ALL for any of the times where I use my laptop on my home network.
Wireless security is now an essential part of personal computing. The other major security suites need to get with the times.

Rebate Rip-Off
Pros: OK product, less of a resource hog than Norton
Cons: The company appears to systematically rip off its customers. Forget about ever receiving your promised rebate.
After submitting all required documentation for the rebate, including mulitple copies of receipts for prior purchases competitor's products, all I received from Trend Micro is a post card indicating they won't send the rebate because they're missing a UPC. Hey Trend Micro, I DOWNLOADED your software and followed your instuctions to a 'T'! There's no box so there's no UPC. Furthermore, no UPC was required for the downloaded product!
Based on multiple other reviews out there, this company makes a habit of ripping off its customers. I recommend avoiding anything from Trend Micro.

Inefficient resource hog
Pros: Easy installation
Cons: Hogs resources, simplistic configuration
I wasn't happy with the firewall, because it was difficult to tell which programs it was monitoring. Unlike even the free version of Zone Alarm, PC-c hides what it's doing. After digging in the configuration, I learned that PC-c lets anything go out, unless you specifically configure it otherwise. It's hard to figure out what it blocks from coming in. Eventually I got around to doing some research, and I learned that the PC-c firewall was causing a delay of 10-30 seconds when I first accessed other computers on my LAN. I decided to go back to Zone Alarm, starting with the free version (later I bought the pro version). It is much superior.
I stayed with the PC-c virus checker. Then my wife mentioned that her Outlook was loading very slowly, and I knew mine was, too. As a test, I timed loading Outlook with the PC-c virus checker installed and uninstalled. The results were astonishing - 3:03 with and 0:40 without PC-cillin. I checked boot times - 4:24 with and 3:17 without.
Then I discovered an even worse problem. I use a program called SECSIM which simulates Ethernet communications between a host computer and semiconductor processing equipment. I run SECSIM on my laptop, and it had been acting strangely. Although timing is critically important in the application, SECSIM responses were delayed by a factor of 3 to 5. That occurred even after I replaced the PC-c firewall. Then I uninstalled the PC-c virus checker and responses were normal again.
Prior to my tests, I'd had a problem with PC-c's email checking. It had intercepted and destroyed two emails from a trusted source, changing them to text. There is supposed to be a way to recover such messages, but I was unable to do so. I contacted PC-c support twice, and neither time did they address the issue - both responses were basically form letters suggesting basic procedures unrelated to my question.
Now I am using Zone Alarm Pro for my firewall and AntiVir Guard for my virus checker. Performance is excellent. I basically threw away the $80 or so it cost for the PC-cillin licenses, but it was well worth it. If you're thinking about your own use, the freeware version of Zone Alarm is excellent. AntiVir Guard is also free for personal use, and it is superior to any other virus checker I've used (Norton, McAfee, and PC-c).
Maybe the most disturbing thing about my experience is the cnet rating for PC-c. They said specifically that it is easy on system resources, but it really trashed performance on all 4 PCs that I installed it on. I guess I'll go elsewhere for my ratings.

Not Ready For Prime-Time!
Pros: Low Price, Easy download and setup
Cons: Not competent in protection, user forced to register
Having purchased a new machine, I decided to purchase PC-Cillin's Internet Security for $9.99. The download and setup operation was smooth and I was prepared to ignore it, just as I had with ZoneAlarm. My mistake. Within 10 minutes of getting online with my LAN connection, an alarming note popped up indicating that an unknown number of computers were currently linking to mine. It then displayed a long list of IP addresses with the current status of the connection with my computer for each one. Needless to say it took me about 3 seconds to turn off the computer and wonder what the hell had just happened.
In the next 15 minutes I had checked my computer to make sure that no trojans or spyware had been loaded and had purchased another copy of ZoneAlarm. I'm now using only the anti-virus portion of PC-cillin.
Even that wasn't trouble-free, as I discovered -- to my annoynance -- that you have to register the software in order to receive updates. Most software packages like this allow you to full use once you've provided the correct serial #/unlock code. I hate going through the additional step of registering, so it was just one more thing I have against this software. Basically, I'm glad I only paid 10 bucks for it.
In conclusion, I'm not saying that this was the worst software I've ever purchased, but it certainly isn't ready for prime time. I would not recommend depending on this software to protect your computer.

An Excellent Program and a Great Value
Pros: Excellent anti-virus, good firewall, OK spyware detection and SPAM filter.
Cons: Private Data Protection feature cumbersome to over-ride.
Its anti-virus capabilities are second to none. Its firewall works well out of the box, and its default settings are perfect for users who just want to "set it and forget it". However, by changing the firewall security level to "High" from the default "Medium", users are given much more control as to how their programs access the internet, including the ability to specify ports, protocols, IP addresses and communication direction for each program.
PC-cillin is automatically set up to check for updates on a regular basis, ensuring that its virus definitions and ability to deal with other threats are up to date. However, these settings can also be customized, from having the user prompted for each update check to having the entire process run in the background without the user even knowing that it is taking place.
PC-cillin's spyware detection is adequate, but like most of its comptetitors, there are better stand-alone alternatives available (e.g., Spybot).
Likewise, its SPAM filtering capabilities are simmilar to those of competing products, which means that all SPAM messages are first downloaded to your computer prior to being parsed out to their various folders. Again, there are better stand-alone anti-SPAM programs that filter and delete SPAM emails at the server before they get downloaded (e.g., MailWasher).
The only glaring weakness in the progam is the Private Data Protection feature. If you come to a web site that requires you to enter your email address and your email is part of the data you chose to protect, you have to turn off the data privacy feature completely to finish this entry. While exceptions are made for secure web sites, this feature should be able to be over-ridden with a button in a dialog box and not require that it be shut off each time.
In summary, PC-cillin is an excellent program that can be customized to meet the needs of all types of users. And unlike some other competitors (think yellow box), it impace on system response times is negligible.
It is abolutely worthy of its Editors' Choice rating.

Pros: Low System Overhead, Fast Scanning, Streamlined Interface
Cons: A little laborious to configure for 1st use
It also has a lot more options and is much easier to configure in the user interface. There is a little time associated with configuring for first use, as many of the options didn't seem to be in the most logical configuration for most users, but not a big deal in comparison.
And, unlike most other "all-in-one" programs, all components seem to be best in class (anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam, wi-fi security)

Beats Norton by a long shot
Pros: pretty good program, quick scans, mostly stays in the background
Cons: rebate service sucks, big time. some proble with registration. program generated popups drive you nuts
Pretty good software. One point reduction for each of the problems listed below, pop up generation, registration issues, rebates.
Got this suite after buying Norton Internet Security 2005 (It appears that Norton has self destructed into a big pile of $*&^) So far I fairly impressed with the speed that this program scans. Much quicker than even the past versions of Norton that actually worked.
I can see future versions of this program getting progressively more annoying with pop up "please update for XXXXX virus." So far my only complaint with that is that half the time when I click ok update it pops up another message saying "your already up to date". Also the download screen is a huge pop up, instead of a little icon in the system tray. These may just be the default settings I still need to play with it a bit more.
The pop up thing seems to be a common theme among software makers right now. When are they going to get it, that we don't want to constantly hear from our virus software. We only want to know when there?s a problem. Also, they should know this since this suite comes with a fairly good pop up blocker.
My biggest problem with this suite was registering the multiple users licenses I got with it. I registered in their system when installing the first license, then went over to my other system and installed it. Then I entered my user ID and password, and there was no record of my user ID. This went on for a couple of weeks, during which time their 'e-mail only' tech support mis-understood my progressively simpler explanations. The bad grammar Tech supports was using had me wondering what country they're in.
I finally fixed the problem when an unrelated Windows XP problem forced me to format and re-install on the first computer. I was able to re-register the first license, which somehow fixed the problem with the second license. ????? what's up with that, it's all on their web-site, nothing internal to the program.
I'm not even going to get into the rebate thing, they denied one and lost the other.
I bought the software in April or March. I just got the rebate check in the mail last week. They must be reading all the "rebate service sucks" reviews. Nothing to really add to the reveiw, no viruses. The download update screen is getting continually more anoing though. Nothing worse than being kicked out of a game by a pop-up telling you to update your virus software. I've had spyware like that before, wonder if that's where they got the idea.

Pros: Full loaded software but...
Cons: Doesn't work with Firefox browser!

Hey! Scans CAN be scheduled to run automatically after install!
Pros: Easy to set up, barely need the instruction booklet (but is helpful).
Cons: Anti-spam can be a pain (installation isn't recommended). You have to set up many options if you installed everything, but is easy to do.
There is a program called "Anti-Spam for Outlook" on the CD that is outdated (as of 12/31/04). I don't recommend installing this since Outlook will be S-L-O-W to load (and I have a GB of memory). Trend only offers a beta verson currenly so I just uninstalled the old program and left the beta alone.
Hope this helps.

Pros: Not a resource hog, appears to work well
Cons: Slows down login time, unreliable updates
It was an easy install and seems to not interfere with applications as much as some others. Scans quickly, doesn't noticeably affect mail or interent browser speeds. Does slow down login and logout slightly. Updates are convenient.
However; Apparently Friday night an update was pushed which caused my laptop to lock up upon login. After several hours of debugging, I relented and started reloading XP and applications. Last night I ran across a thread on a listserver indicating there was a bad file pushed by Trend that caused a problem for many users including me. Trend never notified the registered user base of the problem. I find this unacceptable for an antivirus software vendor. Not only did they disable my computer but they failed to tell me after they realized the problem, leaving the diagnosis and fix to chance. Yes, they published a fix on their support site Friday night but who would have figured an antivirus would cause a freeze on login? They have lost my trust.

Best Bang for the Buck!
Pros: Easy to load and Easy to use. AV is outstanding.
Cons: Very basic firewall and spam programs.
Ok, I admit it! I was WRONG. This program beats Panda Platinum 2005 and eTrust Internet Security 2005 hands down. I LOVE this firewall. I don't have to waste time doing configurations like the Zone Alarm in eTrust or the Sygate in Panda. It is practically effortless in all respects. And yes, it can be configured just about any way you want. The interface is easy to understand, the additional SPAM software works as it should, the URL filter is way better than Net Nanny. The e-mail filter and Spyware software works great. The Anti-Virus is "fast" in Turbo mode! I just can't think of anything bad to say about this product. And oh yes, it cost much less than the others which doesn't hurt a bit!

Will be the best of 2006 and 2007 and so on
Pros: Destroy any virus, Fast scanning, very configurable
Cons: spyware scan it's a bit weak. but no problem
It consumes little system resources, very fast at the scans, and we can configure first and second action to take when a virus is found. That's what i like in antivirus, the ability to choose the actions. Imagine you have an antivirus that founds some kind of virus, and then it displays the following "The virus was not desinfected" and the "OK" button. What's the point? is this an antivirus? yes i'm talking about Norton.
But Pc-cillin removes all the infections, whatever they are. It's firewall passes all the tests, and it's very very easy to create rules! the spyware scan cannot be compared with ad-aware or something like that, but that's ok, it destroys the major spyware.
Trend micro will always win the championship, and norton will always get down..down.. untill they realize that we don't have 5 GB of ram, nor 5 GZ processor

Very very basic
Pros: Fast scanning AV with lots of small add ons
Cons: A complicated and pesty firewall, basic Antispam tools, cruddy AntiSpam
The AntiVirus on-demand scan has a few minor features about it that make it what it is and not junk. Such as an option to automaticaly shut down the computer after finishing checking the system for viruses. (Very good for an on the run type user) The scanning speed was also impressive, although NOD32 remains the fastest in the wild west. However, it missed a virus that was dated back to 2004. (After uninstalling the product I reinstalled MIS 2005 and while during an on-demand scan, VirusScan found the year-old virus PC Cillin aparently missed during my week of it's usage.)
The firewall was similar to that of Norton Personal Firewall 2004 but with a differnt look and design and fewer features. It also did not seem to block as much traffic for me as ZA and MPF did for me. And when set on the option for higher security, it seemingly pestered me more than any firewall I've ever used, even compared to other firewalls set on tighter security. It also was a bit more confusing and ''geeked out'' than other firewalls. Although after taking some time and paying attention I got it figured out with relative ease.
The AntiSpam was very basic. One may find a better AntiSpam tool from Norton, McAfee or even one of those smaller companies based on AntiSpyware and AntiSpam.
The privacy options such as web content filtering was not turned on by default and was not tested during my trial period.
Aside from the drawbacks here and there, this was a very standard and basic like security suite. If one is looking for something basic than this would be a good choice.

It does too have automation past install, and a Turbo Scan to boot!
Pros: Finds viruses Norton doesn't 95% of the time! Best on the market.
Cons: Maybe the firewall could be more user friendly.

Worthless software as a security package
Pros: Fast antivirus scanning
Cons: Firewall, antispyware, spam, privacy, sections are worthless!
The antivirus works quickly, but with the downloads, it tends to use quite a bit of resources and slows the cpu down.
The spyware section is a joke. On the home page for it, the first sentence states that there is no quarantine for any spyware that you may delete. It states in bold print that whatever you delete, you will not be able to get back. It tells you to read up on the spyware completely before any deletion. What anti-spyware is worth anything, if you cannot fix what is deleted? The information is presented in a confusing manner.
The firewall is useless and fails many of the Gibson Research Tests. It also does not work with any Print Servers or Cable Modem setups. I spoke to their Tech Support ref this, and they were unable to give a good direct answer, besides "I do not know". The only way I could get the Print Server to work, was if I shut the firewall down. Worthless I would say.
The privacy section is also worthless. You are required to enter the personal info that you want kept privately. But whenever you are surfing the web, and there are any numeral matches or name matches, a Trend Micro warning box pops up and the screen freezes. The only way you can continue surfing the web is if you work your way through all the subsections to get back to the subsection of the privacy page and then shut down the privacy personal info section. Then you must work your way back to your prior web page and continue. But, remember, when you are done surfing that area, you must go back to the privacy section and turn it back on. What a pain. Why can they not have a shutdown button on the warning box, so you can temporarily shut it down and it can restart over. It was such a pain to use, I just left it off and used the Zone Alarm privacy section which was much more convenient.
The spam section was useless also. You would have to go to the Outlook Express area and set up another folder and make it the Spam folder. Then you would have to go through the motions to set up the spam from Trend Micro to be filtered to that folder. Otherwise if you do nothing, you get nothing for spam assistance from this software. When you receive any mail that Trend thinks is spam, it does nothing more that tag it with the letters SPAM on the heading and forward it to the spam folder that you set up earlier.
Overall, the antivirus was ok, but it does slow the computer down quite a bit. The rest of the suite was lousy.
I would also not use either Norton or McAfee. Both are leaders in having the stores stocked with their boxes, but read the rating from you, the customer. They are poor.
I am currently using Zone Alarm with antivirus. It works quickly, scan quickly and Etrust has favorable reviews from the customers. Being combined with Zone Alarm makes it a good 1 - 2 punch.
After installing and using this software, the only thing I noticed that this software did for my computer system, was to slow it down so much, that it almost stands still. It also does not allow the firewall to be used on my home network or with my print server. I had to eliminate it from the software and use another software, so the network was accessible.
Tech support is a joke. I called 2 times to speak to someone and the person I was given to, obviously was very new to computers. They appeared to be reading the answers from a book and when I stated I had did what they said to do already, they became confused. It seemed like I threw a wrench into the gears of their machine and everything stopped. After countless attempts to get someone with a little knowledge, I did the only thing I was able to do, to save my sanity. I uninstalled this junk and put it where it needed to go, THE TRASH!

A great software at a great price
Pros: Powerful, lots of user customization, reasonably priced; very frequent updates
Cons: Control panel settings confusing and not adequately documented for the average user

missing full feature functionality of some other suites
Pros: good virus program, easy installation and live updating
Cons: lack of info on spyware/coookies it finds so you can't decide whether or not to delete them; no ad blocker; no pop-up blocker; no info on what is being updated when it gets new modules from servers
Its difficult to tell how effective the system is. Although no viruses have gotten through, there is little or no information given when it detects an intrusion or outgoing connection attempt, this makes it very difficult to tell whether or not it is a legitmate communication you are trying to make or something someone is trying to make for you. The same is true with the spyware scan, no info on the what it finds (cookies on my computer, but since some are legit I can't delete any of them becuase there's no info associated with them...). The lack of an ad-blocker and pop-up blocker is quite disappointing. I read the Cnet reviews and decided to purcahse and I half regret it.
Plain and simple, don't waste your time/money on this product.
If you don't mind having to manually intervene multiple times a day to complete "auto" updates, if you don't mind receiving duplicate copies of email tagged as SPAM, if you don't mind having emails that you've reported multiple times for falsely being reported as spam continue to show up (in multiple copies) as spam, if you don't mind having completely useless/blind/unhelpful/unproductive support, then this IS the product for you.
Otherwise, skip it. I wish I had.

No, it doesn't break the bank but it is a resource hog.
Pros: free tech support, reasonable price
Cons: resource hog, large footprint
To the point, it's been my experience that even after uninstalling all but the basic antivirus component, the program is a resource hog. In fact, simply loading the antivirus component by itself slowed my system to a crawl. Granted, I run a rather ancient system (PIII 450, 224 MB RAM with Win98), but it did meet all of the requirements as mentioned on Trend Micro's web site and because I've maintained it meticulously, up until installing Trend Micro's product, it's handled every program thrown at it.
Apparently, the notion that multi-function hardware devices are no longer regarded as inferior to individual components does not also apply with respect to all-in-one Internet Security suites. After speaking with a Trend Micro support rep regarding program issues, he even admitted as much: PC-Cillin IS 2005 is mainly an antivirus program and the other components were basically "thrown in" to have it labeled a suite. Essentially, the components aside from antivirus just aren't that good.
Instead, I should've stayed with the apps I already had and have since returned to: Grisoft's AVG 7 (antivirus), Zonelab's Zone Alarm (firewall), Lavasoft's Ad-aware SE, Spybot's Search & Destroy and Javacool Software's SpywareBlaster (anti-spyware), and Python Software Foundation's Spambayes (anti-spam). Best feature of all of these is that they're free.
