VirusScan Home Edition 7.0 (discontinued)

VirusScan Home Edition 7.0

Entered CNET Catalog: 08/14/2002

SKU: VSF70E001RAA

Manufacturer: McAfee

Manufacturer description

A growing number of home computers use a broadband connection, but half of them don't have updated antivirus software, and most have no firewall protection. Hackers know this… and they have more ways to attack your PC and your private data than viruses. With an open connection in place, your PC is just like leaving your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition. Protect your PC and safeguard your valuable data with McAfee VirusScan and the added security of McAfee Firewall protection.

Like its archrival Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2003, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 automatically downloads up-to-date virus definitions from the Internet; provides a cogent, lucid interface that's quick to navigate; squashes malicious scripts, worms, viruses, and other digital miscreants; and is reasonably priced at about $50. Unlike NAV 2003, VirusScan 7.0 has superior technical support and faster scanning times, and it comes with a firewall--essential for anyone with an always-on DSL or cable-modem Net connection. Although it's a tad less slick-looking than NAV 2003, VirusScan 7.0 is a fine first-time antivirus choice for any Windows user. Current VirusScan users who use Outlook Express or Eudora will want the new features for those apps and should take advantage of the $29.99 upgrade, while current Outlook users should pass for now. Choosing between NAV 2003 and VirusScan 7.0? No need to switch if you already run NAV, but if you're picking for the first time, go with VirusScan. Choosing between NAV 2003 and VirusScan 7.0? No need to switch if you already run NAV, but if you're picking for the first time, go with VirusScan.

Installation and interface
First-time installation is quick. Load the CD and click the Next button a few times; within minutes, you're done. But if you're upgrading from a previous version of VirusScan, you must uninstall your old copy before loading version 7.0, which is a major hassle. Plus, you'll need to reconfigure your customized settings--preset scan times, firewall configuration, and so on--because version 7.0 can't inherit them.

Like Norton AntiVirus 2003, VirusScan 7.0 fully automates its virus-definition downloads; you won't need to install these yourself. Version 7.0 also includes a complimentary one-year subscription to McAfee's virus-definition service, which costs $9.95 per year thereafter.

Unlike NAV 2003, which automatically deletes viruses once it intercepts them, VirusScan 7.0's default setting posts a warning dialog asking whether you'd like to delete, clean, or quarantine the infected file, which gives you more control over the process. However, VirusScan 7.0 users who prefer Norton's "don't bother the user" method can change this setting by entering the Advanced Options dialog and choosing either the Clean or Delete (infected files) menu item.

VirusScan 7.0's interface, with its browserlike Back, Forward, and Home buttons, is pretty much unchanged from version 6.0, with the exception of a new feature that allows you to schedule scans of individual folders. For example, you can schedule it to check your always-changing My Documents folder to provide you with a degree of control that version 6.0 didn't offer.

Feature set
Under the hood, McAfee's Hostile Activity Watch Kernel (HAWK) detects unfriendly viruses, such as mass-mailer worms. This time around, HAWK supports SMTP-based e-mail clients, such as Microsoft Outlook Express and Eudora, in addition to Outlook, so if your e-mail app tries to send a message to more than 60 percent of your address book, HAWK will alert you. However, like NAV 2003, VirusScan 7.0 offers only limited protection for America Online e-mail users, no thanks to AOL's proprietary e-mail format.

VirusScan's VShield in-memory scanner monitors active scripts for potential trouble from Visual Basic and JavaScript and also scans file transfers between your PDA and PC. And like NAV 2003, VirusScan 7.0 now examines file downloads from the popular instant-messenger applications of Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft.

But here's the clincher: version 7.0, like its predecessor, includes McAfee Firewall to prevent unauthorized access to Internet-connected PCs, which is especially important for those machines with always-on broadband connections. The firewall is unchanged since the last version, except that it now automatically allows desktop applications such as Internet Explorer, AOL, and Music Maker to access the Net.

Performance
In CNET Labs' performance tests, VirusScan 7.0 beat NAV 2003 soundly in scanning speed, the amount of time it takes to search your PC for viruses, while both antivirus apps made a similarly minimal impact on overall PC performance. To measure VirusScan 7.0's impact on system performance, CNET Labs used BAPCo's SysMark2002, an industry-standard benchmark. The Internet Content Creation portion of SysMark measures a desktop's performance running off-the-shelf applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. (We did not run the Office Productivity portion of the benchmark because it incorporates McAfee VirusScan 5.13.)

Our test system was a Compaq Evo W4000, running Windows XP Professional, with an Intel P4 2.4GHz processor and 512MB of DDR RAM. With VirusScan 7.0 running, our test system scored a 97--a 3 percent reduction in overall system speed, which is reasonable and wouldn't be noticed by most users. In comparison, Norton AntiVirus 2003 scored a 95, or a 5 percent reduction in system speed. (An Internet Content Creation score of 100 represents the performance of our test system without any extraneous software running.) In a test of scanning speed, VirusScan 7.0 took an average of 1.7 minutes to scan a 1GB directory, beating NAV 2003, which averaged 3.1 minutes.

To determine whether VirusScan effectively blocks viruses, we examined its past performance in tests conducted by independent antivirus-testing laboratories. In the latest Virus Bulletin tests, VirusScan 6.0 earned the coveted VB 100 percent rating only once in the three most recent Windows tests, compared to Norton AntiVirus 2003, which won all of the last three Windows tests. However, VirusScan has performed as well as Norton in live virus tests conducted by AV-Test.org. Previous versions of VirusScan have also been certified by the independent antivirus-testing laboratories at West Coast Checkmark and ICSA Labs.

Technical support
VirusScan 7.0's interface includes links to a respectable collection of FAQs and troubleshooting tips on McAfee's
Web site. We were pleased with McAfee's Web-based technical 24/7 chat with a tech-support rep, too. In our tests, the reps were knowledgeable and helped us repair a scanning glitch. (Note: www.mcafee-at-home.com, not www.mcafee.com, is the site that offers the live technical support.) If you prefer phone support, however, you'll pay $39 per support incident or $2.95 per minute. McAfee's phones are staffed from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. PT.

If you're choosing an antivirus package for the first time, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 is a fine choice. It's a hard-working, virus-crushing crusader that's a solid value. Existing VirusScan users who run Outlook Express or Eudora should plunk down 30 bucks for the upgrade, but Outlook users will find the overall enhancements to be marginal.

It WAS good, now it is aweful

Pros: None with the new interface

Cons: No way to turn it off. Takes over the computer. Crumby support site. Crumby Tech support options. Need I go on?

Review: I have had the worst experience with McAfee after using their software for years. This latest edition makes you use their Security Center. There is NO WAY to turn this off from within the Security Center. You can supposedly disable options, but I couldn't even do a warm boot when this thing was running. Trying to close the software from Task Manager only made the software restart itself!

I have now removed it from my computer and to re-boot, I had to unplug power to the computer!

Their "Online Support" is a joke. There are about 5 questions answered otherwise you have to run their own "Virtual Technician". This installs another program which then turns everything back on and tells you all is well with the world.

This product takes over your computer with no way to stop it. AVOID this at all costs.

Good product - horrible customer service

Pros: Constantly updated

Cons: Customer service and support is the worst. Read the fine print on rebates.

Review: The software requires you to verify your subscription on a regular basis. Half the time the links used to subnit your verification do not work, leaving you unprotected. If you try to get support, you get an automated answer that tells you to read the FAQ's, and none of the FAQ's address the problem. They also offer phone support for a heafty fee. They say they have free support via a virtual technician, but those links often leave you high and dry. When it works, it works well, when it doesn't, you're screwed. You can do a lot better for your money. I gave it a 1 because I cannot go any lower.

Mcafee is the choice of the industry, period.

Pros: The best on the market. All the people complaining here are people who had serious issues before they installed mcafee, and obviously do not know anything about repairing/maintaining pc's. If you cannot maintain your box, eventually nothing will work. The

Cons: None, although I wish the un-desirable scanner would concentrate more on spyware/adware dummy creation after cleaning.

Cons: Can't remember any stability problems, so none.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After attempting to install this software for a customer I have to ask why this was given such high reviews by CNET. The system (Windows 98) that I attempted to install VirusScan 7.0 on only had 32MB of RAM but this is listed as OK on the box. The system slowed down to a crawl, the VirusScan scanner gave up half the time and didn't start, the updater screwed up and appeared to have trouble remembering where it put temporary files. Looking for the Real Scoop on McAfee?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This release is a great set of new features but it may not be the right one for you. Keep in mind that McAfee actually makes several versions of the AntiVirus Software. If you are a true techie, unlike the so called Pc Techs that have left comments here, then the VirusScan 7.0 Professional is for you. If you are a novice then the VirusScan 7.0 Home Edition has your name all over it. Just remember that you are buying the AntiVirus software and the remaining software is a bonus. I haven't personally run the other software components and generally don't install extra utilities. The final option which is what I use for my in-laws computer is the VirusScan Online. It's a software version that updates automatically from the internet and you don't have anything to ever do again. The other two products update automatically if you want them to when your online. Despite what anyone has posted here, if you have half a brain and can read a manual you can set any of these versions of McAfee up and never have to touch them again. McAfee has the best scan engine available and that's why if you read comments here people find viruses with McAfee even when they ran Norton. If setup correctly you can keep your system Virus Free. Keep in mind that McAfee has the largest installation base in the enterprise beating out Norton and all the other vendors. Do you think that the US Armed services, Federal Government and 60% of the Fortune 500 buy software for every one of the computers with out testing it? Follow the directions and prove all the chumps who are posting on here wrong. By the way, what kind of crack is the guy on thats posting that McAfee writes their own viruses.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: These guys are the best. They will help you like no others. I tried their on line help where a person will help you get rid of your virus. With Norton it is a long process where you have to pay 39.99 for help, there is no free on line help option. I can not under stand how Norton can make it when McAfee has such good support. Now for people that do not need support I guess Norton will work.

Found viruses that Nortnon missed!

Pros:

Cons:

I installed Mcafee and it messed up the boot file for Win2k. I booted from a floppy and everything was fine. THIS NEW XP/PRO USER IS PLEASED!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Installed 7.02 on a new A31 Thinkpad w/XP_Pro, using cable access to internet. Overall installation configuration was a no brainer. The most impressive feature is the speed of the scan, aprox. 55000 files scanned on 2 hard drives in under 6 minutes! No performance degradation observed over the last two weeks of heavy use. Also impressed with the customization of blocking/allowing local apps from communicating out to the network gives you an idea of what is going on. Initial setup requires understanding what should be allowed and what should be blocked but safer to be more paranoid starting out on a new machine that took me 2 weeks to get customized. Overall very pleased just hope I remain virus FREE!

Works nicely after fixes

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After getting socked with a slew of viruses recently I wanted to get this or NAV and read the reviews and ended up getting the OEM version of Anti-Virus7 because it was very cheap. I installed on a W98SE machine and immediately had the sound stuttering problem that others have mentioned here. I went to tech support (free by way of IM) and it took three tries to fix. First tech sent something which did not fix it. Second got disconnected. Third sent something which fixed it spot on. It runs great now and I can hardly tell its there other than the initial splash screen and taskbar icon. Other than the one disconnected tech support experience, I was quite pleased with the process they use for support.

Doesn't work well with Windows XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've had McAfee with Windows 98 for 2 years. It caught alot of virus' and got rid of them. My son purchased a new computer, and we got his old one (1 year old.)My son didn't need virus protection because he was online at his college which had virus protection. This computer we aquired has Windows xp. I attempted to update and install McAfee. The download went great. But.... when it tried to scan for virus', all kinds of errors would come up. I spent alot of time on a chat line with their techs. Everything they said to try did not work to fix. I told them I had heard that McAfee was not 100% compatible with XP. They told nonsense! I called (2) different local computer tech shops and both told me to get rid of McAfee and purchase Norton Internet Security 2003. And no, they don't get a kickback form Norton! Both said that McAfee is the most overrated virus product on the market. Most computers will come with that in them because it is cheap to buy and sell. I am going with Norton!

Firewall Sucks!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have nothing against the VirusScan itself-works great, much better than NAV. However, their firewall is a pain in the neck. I am running Win2000 with broadband connection that has to be dialed-up. Firewall completely messed up all the settings and internet did not work at all. I just could not dial to it any more. The fact that settings customisation of the firewall is not really user-friendly makes the whole thing even worse. So after 10 min. installation and 2 hours of fighting I had to remove the firewall completely and spend another 2 hours restoring my internet connection. It still does not work 100% for all apps, by the way. I agree with CNET reviewers, stick with version 6 and if you need a firewall, get yourself a ZoneAlarm.

Whats wrong with you people??????????

Pros:

Cons:

Review: first, if a program is on sale, it means its been tested and it works. second, if its rated 8.0 or higher there is a reason for that. and third, fix your machine cause yes if its all messed up how do you expect a program to work on it. finally here is the ending: they all work its about what your needs are from an antivirus program. if you wanna light and effective one: get pc cillin. if you wanna one full with features get mcafee. and if you want good looking one get norton. its that easy. you can always go to housecall to scan online if you dont trust them :), but remember they work!!!. and whoever said it has problems with xp, i can keep laughing all night. hope that helps. oh and again, get to know you machine before complaining cause the easiest thing is to blame it on someone else. look yourself in the mirror and say it "I know **** about computers", feel better now? there are people actually working on it and trying to make it safer for us to browse the net and thats all you ahve to say? thats sad. you gotta give credit to all of them and be thankfull of that you are living in our times and are even able to surf the web. man whatever. get one and if you have problems look in your machine, dont blame it on the programs. bye

Does a good job

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been using McAfee VirusScan 7.01 for about a week now, and it works fine. No freeze ups or crashes. Unlike many people who complain about McAfee software screwing up their computers, this program (as well as earlier versions) works well on my PC. Version 7 looks fairly much like version 6, but has a few minor improvements.

WILL NOT INSTALL IN WIN XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I knew I should have listen to others. I installed XP over 98SE and of course McAfee 5.0 was incompatible. So, like a putz, I purchased McAfee 7.0 and can not get it to install. I am having to go through my registry. Stay awayf from McAfee XP users. Try Norton or RAV. I heard RAV is great, why didn't I listen????

Design and features

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This software has no design at all! Sure, it has a direct copy look from XP but thats about it. Easy to use? Not at all! It has no features (only the ones who sux) and they aint even that good either! A five year old could make a better "design" then the people at McAfee - Stay away from it!

better than Norton for Win XP

WORTH EVERY FARTHING

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Easy to use, upgrades regularly available, virus warnings with degree of threat, clear explanations of how viri work. By tweaking some features on my computer and installing some free stealthware, I find that I do not need the firewall, which made my OS (Winows XP) unstable. Go to https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 to test your machine for vulnerability on cable or DSL modem. I would recommend McAfee to novice and expert alike.

User Rating: 8/10

Much better than Norton

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After getting fed up with Norton's inability to help me with software that prematurely terminated my updates (2 mos. after purchase), I went out and purchased the McAfee product. What a huge difference! It works like a charm and the firewall and anti-popup features work great as well. My only complaint is with its initial stability -- slow performance, mouse problems, and freezups. However, this was easily fixed by loading McAfee's latest scan engine.

VirusScan 6.0 with XP Home.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I installed VirusScan 6.0 Pro on a PC with Win 2K, AMD XP1800 and had problems. The McAfee Firewall (included)would hang up frequently while online (cable modem). Finally upgraded my PC to Win XP home, and VirusScan 6.0 Pro runs great (I reformated and did a clean install). I think most of the trouble I had was my AMD system was was not that compatible with Win 2K. If you have an AMD XP+ you should defintely be running XP Home, then try VirusScan 6.0 or 7.0. Since upgrading to XP Home, VirusScan 6.0 runs flawlessly. I've heard there's not that much difference in 7.0. I still don't use McAfee's firewall I'm relying on XP Home's firewall, but intend to get a hardware firewall later. Supposedly my isp provides some hardware firewall protection but not sure about this. Anyway, I recommend VirusScan 6.0 (or 7.0) with XP Home. If this doesn't work for you then I believe you have other problems in your system, not with VirusScan. I work as an Electrical Engineer so I ahve a lot of experience with PC systems and software.

Just Perfect!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I can only recommend this program! I had one problem with the install process (mcafee told me that I could ot install when zone alarm pro whas installed on my omputer) but after a little (free of charge!!) chat with the guys from mcafee, that problem was solved in about 5 minutes. Now the program is up and running and it works lika a charm! Way better than norton!

Poor technical support

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I upgraded my computer from a Windows 98 system to a WindowsXP system. McAfee said it's Antivirus 6.0 suppose to be compatable with XP but so far no luck. I'm still waiting for a response from McAffe as to what needs to be done for it to work on XP.

"Superior Technical Support"? - rubbish

Pros:

Cons:

Review: One of the reasons I bought this product was the integrated firewall. But it seems that McAfee do not say too loudly that this is restricted to US and Canada. So world beware. Then try to get support for Safe and Sound - McAfee do not even seem to be aware of this part of the product, and world beware again - it is not supported on non-English OS (I have Greek Windows ME). Try and find this restriction listed by McAfee. Read the McAfee forum - the answer to many problems is to mess with the registry. nice and easy advice? Beware

Much better than Norton Antivirus 2003

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is much better than Norton Antivirus 2003. Norton slows down the system a lot and scanning is too slow. I like the firewall as it protects my computer from hackers. Mcafee scans faster and catches all viruses. It even caught viruses that Norton COULD NOT! Mcafee VirusScan 7.0 includes Instant Updater which updates dat files and it's other parts effeciently, Mcafee Emergency Disk provides virus scan in emergency situations, and Visual Trace to see where the hackers are attacking from! With features Norton does not provide and features better than Norton's. This is a product that blows Norton and Zona Alarm away.

User Rating: 10/10

Better than Norton 2003

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally, the only antivirus that deserves full rating. It's a product which bundles every thing a PC needs, including microsoft software integration, stops script base viruses and the ultimate firewall protection for your PC. McAfee rules

User Rating: 8/10

hassle free compared to Norton

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If this utility scanned email in Outlook Express I'd give it a ten, much better than NAV2003 which thoroughly thrashed my system. From what I'm reading Mcafee causes problems on XP, but if you're running millennium, it's the definite choice over Norton, as NAV2003 thrashes Windows Millennium like a paper shredder! They need to take care of that email scanning problem though. Outlook Express is a common email client.

Glitches galore

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The on access scanner (v shiels) glitches with windows XP and it damaged my new computer. It also gets in your way alot instead of ingegrating. Go buy norton, it is soooooooooo much better.

Great antivirus

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had gotten the KLEZ virus and didnt know hot to get rid of it, I go to the McAfee web site and they have a tool that gets rid of it, i thought that was a great thing to have and they dont charge for it either. im sure if I was using Norton I would have to pay for cleaning my files of viruses....HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. forget about Norton.....they stink.

User Rating: 1/10

I've had worse but not many

Pros:

Cons:

Review: VirusScan has given me more headaches than most programs. Virus constantly crashes the system upon startup at the point the splashscreen appears. Mcafee splashscreens have caused me problems with both Win 98 and Me. This was fixed after removing it from the Startup. However the installation also did some minor damage to the registry. Which can be a real pain to fix without resorting to reformating and reinstalling everything. Better back up everything and then some before installing this one.

Buyer Be Aware

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this product with the upgrade rebate offer and it turns out that after sending in all the required material I got a letter back asking me to send in the same material that I had already mailed. So my advice is not to fall for the rebate offer that you will never get. After installing the software it was very unstable and crashed my WinXp Pro system or it would lock the system down so I had to reboot all the time. I have uninstalled the product and bought Norton 2003 and it runs very stable with no crashes. For my Firewall I bought ZoneAlarm Pro. Now my system runs just like it should crash free.

VAST IMPROVEMENT OVER NORTON 2003 & v6

Pros:

Cons:

Review: McAfee is simply the best. With an attractive look very much similar to Windows XP's explorer and the greatest innovation of all time that any Antivirus have ever had i.e. The HAWK, With a complete support for XP theme and Microsoft software integration, Scan times faster than, and virus detection rate over than any of its competitor have... McAfee simply knocks out every antivirus around. McAfee RULES

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For those who paid this much you're crazy, and for those who took a weekend to rebuild your machine, you must have been milking it, it takes me less than 3 hours to rebuild mine, and that was after Norton ripped my machine up and told me I had a virus and couldn't delete it. I'm sticking with McAfee, all the way, good sturdy product.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Over a last few years I have always had neg comments on the editors choice. But as I moved to McAfee my mouths shut.. Its a great AV but I was not pulled by its firewall, I took it bcoz it is much better than any AVS around. No matter whatever Cnet's editor choice maybe next time I am always to stick with McAfee

Pros:

Cons:

Doesn't work with Outlook Express

Pros:

Cons:

Forget it if you have XP Pro . . .

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Downloaded the trial version of this product and after installation, I rebooted. The software tried to download the updated .dat file from the net and it froze up the system. I manually restarted. After logging into my account in XP, it would not let me proceed when the Macafee splash screen came up. Completely frozen, it even crashed the System Configuration Utility.

User Rating: 2/10

It's good and I like it!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don't know why, but there seems to be one group of people that have problems with the software running on their system and the other group which have no problems and are totally satisfied with the software. I belong to the last one. I use both 6.0 and 7.0 (one at home, the other in the company) and they both work very fine. I upgrade my anti-virus def. manually because I don't want to register. Version 6.0 needed a patch to be more user-friendly, but even before there was no problem except you were a dummy that didn't know how to use his pc. I can only recommend Mcafee Anti-Virus.

Ruined My Weekend

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The install was fine, but as the other reviews indicated, it ate a bunch of registry entries and some windows system files (Windows 98). Worse yet, it did something to my directories; deleting some and replicating others. I spent my weekend reformatting my hard drive and reloading all my programs. When I reloaded McAfee, the firewall wouldn't install, which is just as good since I'll be looking for another product. You've been warned!

User Rating: 5/10

Customer service poor

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Last year they sent renewal notices every few days starting three months before the subscription expired. This time they auto renewed without my permission. Program seemed decent enough but the problems with customer service made me decide to try another program.

User Rating: 5/10

Terrible service.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got McAfee antivirus bundled with my computer and I bought the susbcription afterwards I have used it for about 3 years. Later I added the personal Firewall and they work OK. The Update process regularly freezes the computer but I came to expect that since it seems to be a feature of the Internet Explorer, which is required by the update process. So I can say I was content if not delighted. Recently, however(about 1 1/2 months ago), I decided to buy their CD backup for the product. They happily took my order on line and immediately charged my credit card. Unfortunately, delivering the product is not one of their priorities. I have not received the CD and, even worse, I have been unable to communicate with any customer representative. They process all their email automatically and send you a crappy answer based on keywords. I guess they assume that $9.95 is not something to complain about. I will let my subscription expire (why should I waste my money, right?) and never will do business with this company again.

Version 7 does not support Eudora

Pros:

Cons:

Good and Cheap

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I needed a good antivirus. So it was either McAfee or Norton. The decision was easy Mcafee is cheaper and comes with a firewall ,and mine came bundled with Quickclean (full version). But I love these products and havent experienced any problems. I usually dont say anything but everyone is saying they are having problems with this software. I just wanted everyone to know theres at least one guy out there who hasnt had any problems or had to reformat.

Stay away!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: McAfee software should absolutely not go on your computer. It does more harm than good causing all kinds of compatibility problems. Usually when people tell me they got McAfee anti virus, I recommend uninstalling it and buying NortonAV instead.

User Rating: 1/10

$$$$$

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have to agree. This product in no way should be on anyones computer. McAfee dropped the ball long ago when it came to antivirus. They got greedy, Norton seized the opportunity, and that was the end of that. If you want to deal with confusing upgrade policies, a product that is more likely to bring down your system than any virus, from a company that amazes me to still BE in business...then go Mcafee. If you want an antivirus product that does what it is supposed to do from a company that knows what it is doing, go Norton. Not to mention that any compatibility issues you run into will be handled if you use Norton, since more other people use Norton. If you ever run into issues with Mcafee, you are SOL unless Mcafee themselves fix the problem.

User Rating: 6/10

Good, but be Careful.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Installed this software with XP Pro and everything worked well until I used the Shredder utility. It shredded a chunk of my registry and reduced my hard drive to a shivering, wimpering wreck. I had to get a new drive (covered by warranty)! Now, it works perfectly--though I won't use the shredder.

Lucky I didn't pay for it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have always dislike McAfee softwares but I never really know why. Guessed it was just the feeling. Anyway, I don't know what got into me once and I dicided to download a copy for trial. Well what can I say about it? NOT A LOT coz I didn't get to use it. I am pretty convinced that McAfee produce Virus or similar. I installed the software only to find that it won't work and (this is why I think they produce virus) it completly screwed up my Windows. So after ONE hour of installing it, I had to Format my Hard Drive and reinstall everything. I will NEVER EVER touch McAfee again especially their "Anti" Virus.

I personally have seen the lastest version wreak havoc on the Windows XP registry durng install, and have had all kinds of problems after the install BECAUSE of vital registry keys deleted by McAfee during the install. I would NEVER professionally recommend McAfee's Antivirus program to anyone

Industry standard product with easy of use for a novice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Mcafee is industry standard in Virus Scanning.Take it from a system admin with a decade of experience. Version 7.0 has vastly improved on the scanning speed versus version 6.0 & norton scanner. It does not seem to slow down any programs or emails. The updating process when set automatic on my Cable Modem works very nicely. The biggest advantage is that it comes with a firewall (usa canada version)packaged. So for the price of one you get two things. The firewall is also very strong and effective. out of the box it works well ,however if you are seriously into firewalls and want to tweak it,you will fall short of documentation. Remember you bought an Antivirus in the first place. Look out for deals. I bought mine from amazon.com. 30$ & 20$ mailin rebate & free shipping.

good protection with major flaws

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This program is very good at detecting and eliminating viruses, but it can wreak havoc on your machine. As a consultant I can't tell you how many times I've been called to troubleshoot very weird problems I've never seen before. When I disabled Norton the problems disappeared. It's become a first strike when troubleshooting for me. I can't believe that CNET and everybody else in the universe recommmends this program and doesn't alert people to the fact it can cause really strange problems.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: MA's VirusScan has been on my cable-connected system for 2 years and I have been virus-free. I'm notified whenever my system needs updates to protect it from a new virus--and I get to choose when that update takes place. The new goodies: such as my account profile, which tells me what products I have and when I will have to renew, is a great one-stop review. Their redesigned Web site just makes MA more attractive and easier to use.

Crappy upgrade policy requires online buyers to mail-in coupon for rebate off retail price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Mcafee has lost my interest in continuing to use their products since instituting an upgrade (from Viruscan 6 or other version) policy that requires you to physically mail in a rebate coupon rather than giving you the rebate based on your registration with their site. This seems to me like a deliberate attempt to take advantage of customers who might not be likely to take the time to mail in the coupon. Why don't they take care of their loyal customers and give you an on the spot rebate?
