Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.3 with Antivirus would seem like a powerful combination, given that McAfee, Norton, and Trend Micro all combine their antivirus and antispyware scans. And rather than build its own antivirus engine, Webroot has wisely partnered with top-rated U.K.-based Sophos Anti-Virus, which sells primarily to the enterprise market. But the antivirus scanner included within Spy Sweeper isn't fully implemented and doesn't extend protection to common virus vectors such as e-mail or IM. Webroot says that additional antivirus functionality will be added to later versions of Spy Sweeper, but for the moment, we're nervous about making Spy Sweeper our only antivirus protection. As for traditional antispyware protection, Spy Sweeper 5.3 did well at shielding our machine from new spyware and detecting spyware already established. However, it took the longest to complete its scan, it didn't do so well at removing all traces of found spyware, and not all of Spy Sweeper's defense shields are turned on by default. For now, we think Spy Sweeper 5.3 isn't ready for prime time. For the same $39, we think you're better off with a traditional antivirus product that also includes antispyware protection, such as our Editors' Choice, Kaspersky.

Setup
Spy Sweeper 5.3 is available for retail purchase or download, with or without antivirus enabled. We question why Webroot would make antivirus an option--shouldn't it be standard? In light of this, we recommend buying the antispyware version only at $29. Current Spy Sweeper customers' apps will be automatically upgraded to version 5.3 (with an option to enable antivirus for $10 more). We suggest all Spy Sweeper users wait and purchase the antivirus component in a future release. Note: the trial copy of Spy Sweeper will not remove any spyware it identifies unless you purchase the full product; we think this is wrong, and a crude way to force sales.

We experienced no difficulties installing Spy Sweeper 5.3 with Antivirus. After installation, we were asked to reboot our system.

Should you decide to uninstall Spy Sweeper, Webroot includes an uninstall icon on the All Programs list. After rebooting, we found no trace of Spy Sweeper in the Program Files directory or the system registry.

Interface
The Spy Sweeper 5.3 with Antivirus interface remains unchanged from that of Spy Sweeper 5, with the exception of a tiny upper-right corner panel informing you whether antivirus protection has been enabled. Webroot's integration of Sophos is invisible; for example, there's no separate configuration page for antivirus scans, which initially started us wondering just how much antivirus protection exists within Spy Sweeper.

The interface of Spy Sweeper 5.3 with Antivirus remains largely unchanged from that of Spy Sweeper 5.

To tweak antispyware scans for individual files or folders, simply use the various Spy Sweeper configuration screens; however, we could find no separate configuration options for the antivirus part of the product, such as protective settings to block incoming viruses from e-mail or IM, a setting found in many traditional antivirus products.

Spy Sweeper's interface is crisp and intuitive, the result of many hours of user-interface testing. For example, we like that during a scan, the color-coded tabs on the scan page mark your progress: Sweeping, Quarantine, and Summary.

Features
Aside from antivirus protection, Spy Sweeper continues to provide first-class antispyware protection and adds new antirootkit protection in SpySweeper 5.3. SpySweeper uses protective shields to protect your hard drive, blocking spyware and adware as it attempts to download. Within the Spy Sweeper Sweep section there are three options: Full Sweep scans all the files on your computer's attached drives; Quick Sweep offers a fast and light pass of your main drive system; and Custom Sweep allows you to select individual drives or folders or exclude extensions.

We installed Spy Sweeper 5.3 with Antivirus with ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite up and running on our laptop. In theory, we should have experienced trouble, since both Spy Sweeper and ZoneAlarm include competing antivirus protection. But we were able to run a full Spy Sweeper scan concurrent with a ZoneAlarm antivirus scan. How come? Webroot includes just the On Demand Sophos virus-inspection engine, using it to identify and remove file infections already on the hard drive. Missing is the Realtime Sophos virus engine that looks for active infections, and this includes active infections from e-mail, IM, and other vectors. Webroot tells us that SpySweeper triages all identified malware, letting most of the malware interact the spyware components within the Spy Sweeper engine and sending the viral components to the Sophos engine only when necessary.

Not all of the defense shields within Spy Sweeper 5.3 are active by default.

We also found that deep scans for rootkits--those pernicious little malware packages that hide deep within the system kernel--remain optional in this release. Webroot says that its advanced heuristic rootkit protection can be time- and possibly resource-intensive, so Spy Sweeper 5.3 makes it an optional feature. With traditional antivirus packages, full rootkit protection, when offered, is enabled by default. The average user may not ever think to tweak their configuration settings.

Performance
Webrot Spy Sweeper 5.3 is very slow at a scanning, requiring more than one hour to scan our Acer Travelmate 8200 laptop; other antispyware products completed their respective scans in around 20 minutes. That said, Spy Sweeper's remains one of the better antispyware apps we tested. In exclusive testing by CNET Labs, Spy Sweeper's active shields identified and blocked seven out of eight spyware samples we attempted to install, missing only one generic Trojan, Compare-prices.zip. For scanning and removing existing spyware samples, Spy Sweeper's caught six out of eight. As for the removal itself, in a majority of the cases Spy Sweeper left some spyware residue behind, removing only three of the eight samples, creating the possibility that some of the sample spyware could reinstall itself. This last criteria sunk Spy Sweeper's overall performance score. Webroot says Spy Sweeper removes only as much of the potential spyware as necessary to disable it, but we found competing antispyware apps removed all traces of some of the same samples that Webroot chose to leave behind, so that argument didn't wash.

Support
Webroot supports Spy Sweeper by providing online FAQs, a 24-7 e-mail trouble ticket, and toll-free live telephone support located within the country of the caller (Webroot is particularly proud of this fact). All technical support through Webroot is free for registered users.

Conclusion
While we applaud Webroot's decision to partner with the premier antivirus vendor Sophos, we question the decision to rush the Spy Sweeper 5.3 product to market without full its antivirus implementation. And we had trouble with the number of traces left behind by Spy Sweeper, traces that were easily removed by competing products. Finally, Spy Sweeper took the longest duration to scan more potential spyware than the faster, lighter competition. We look forward to version 6.0, which should hopefully remedy most if not all of these concerns.

Adequate protection, but a total resource hog.

Pros: Provides reasonably good protection from spyware and viruses.

Cons: Spy Sweeper has become larger and more sluggish. Only somewhat good at protecting the computer from infection in the first place.

Their auto-renew policy without explicit permission is horrible.

Review: Clearly, the most serious problem with Webroot is their new policy of auto-renewing customers without their explicit consent. Greed has replaced common sense. This policy will infuriate customers and alienate the public at large, as word spreads of this practice.

For me, I've switched to Norton Antivirus 2009. After a number of years of producing, bloated, sluggish, horrible (but somewhat effective) programs, they listened to peoples' complaints and did a complete rewrite of their software. Now it's a good product.

Takes Months to Get Support Issues Resolved

Pros: Removes some spyware

Cons: Really really bad customer support. Bug fixes take months, Resource Hog, Catches "spyware" that is not spyware. No way to set false positives to ignore.

Review: If a product is well written, who needs support. Unfortunately, it's not and I've needed Webroot Support way too many times over the last couple of years. They auto-close your case with every response, each response take a week or more, your case drags on forever. Forget about calling for support. Every call has resulted in a tier 1 tech who puts me on hold for hours while awaiting next tier. They seem to treat every software bug as user error, despite providing logs, screen prints, etc to prove otherwise, and you've got to really hammer on them to get them to admit that the problem is with the product and forward the case to the developer. Every time I've had a problem, it's taken 3-4 months for a software fix, most of the time is spent arguing with support. This product is pure misery.

A product is only as good as it's service.

Pros: For me- there are none.

Cons: You have NO customer service!!!

Review: I have been trying to reach this company for way to long and still can't make any headway.  The web site gets you nowhere nor the computerized phone and they have got me stuck on an auto-renewal  plan for Spysweeper software on  a computer that I don't even have  anymore!  There are laws against this.  I will do all I can to damage your reputation.

good but vista compatable frustration

Pros: did the job

Cons: just too many vista frustrations

Review: i finally gave up but I am not sure if it was Webroot or a Vista problem

I did not appreciate an autmatic renewal.
I then became irritated at the process to refund the fee
I read this site review but decided to call Webroot one more time.
I was pleased to speak with a real person and receive a no nonsense refund.

Webroot has worst customer service

Pros: Spy sweeper works

Cons: It slows your computer down quite a bit

Review: Here are the reasons why webroot scamming people:

1. The Webroot ISE made my XP SP3 very slow, when I shut down webroot, computer performance increases right away ( I tried disabling shields with no luck).
2. I tried on-line knowledgebase to resolve the issue, with no luck
3. I e-mailed support to see if someone can help, all I got was an automatic response of recommending the knowledge base
4. I tried to contact the basic support team, and was on-hold for two hours before I hung up.
5. The is the worst software support I have countered in a long time
6. Only way to get refund is to eamil at refund@webroot.com with no response. This is a terrible way to support customers

webroot spy sweeper 'support' incompetent

Pros: The program actually worked for six months. I even purchased another copy for my second laptop.

Cons: Unqualified, ineffective support personnel and procedures

Review: I began to get an error message 'program damaged- contact webroot support'. After four Webroot-assisted uninstalls and reinstalls (with no improvement), I requested a refund. Three days later they still could not even locate my registrations in their 'database'.
In order to receive my refund, I am currently being required to ship back both copies of the software, copies of the store receipts, and a letter explaining my request
(estimated time for refund: 3-6 weeks!).
All of this on top of a week of wasted time sending emails and trying to follow their useless instructions. BUYERS BEWARE!

Lies to get you to buy it.

Pros: Probably a decent program - didn't get that far because...

Cons: Free Trial version finds trojan that IS NOT THERE.

Review: I researched the trojan it found and discovered there was no part of it in my files or Registry. Any trial program that invents a threat so you will buy the full version has no business on my PC. Also, when I went to Control Panel and hit Uninstall, before it would do that it opened a browser web page with more pressuring to get me to buy the product. Not cool - no sale. Spread the word.

Spy Sweeper with AntiVirus Works Great

Pros: Easy one step sweep, great shields

Cons: None that I can find

Review: We've used SpySweeper for several year on our machines without a single infection. The latest version (5.5)with AntiVirus protection has just added an integrated firewall that takes the place of the XP firewall. Combined they work as well as Norton or McAfee, but much, much, faster. We also appreciate the feedback the programs provide about the health of our computers.

Waste Of Time Downloading

Pros: Good malware detection and lots of shields

Cons: Slow performace, Not good at removing malware.

Review: Pros:Spysweeper has an easy to use interface.Good detection of both spyware and virus.Dozens of shields to prevent most spyware from installing.Good configurable options.

Cons:Slows the system performance.Takes a long time scan the entire computer.Trial version won't remove anything, but since I've the full version, I was able to test the removal and it wasn't as effective as scanning. Some tricky malware can bypass the realtime protection.Unexperienced technical support, all they recommend is to run a cleanup tool.

Conclusion:Spysweeper maybe popular, but standalone antivirus programs like:Kaspersky, Norton, Panda and Mcafee do a better job at detecting and removing spyware than Spysweeper.Webroot went downhill very fast and I don't recommend anything from them.

Latest version is unusable

Pros: Previous versions worked fine

Cons: Latest version freezes system (XP)

Review: I have been using Spy Sweeper for about 6 months. When I upgraded to the latest version the program started freezing my computer. I emailed back and forth a few times and followed their suggestions. However nothing seemed to work. They have admitted that they are having a problem with one of the modules but instead of coming up with an emergency fix they keep trying to get me to experiment with all sorts of settings. I finally gave up on the program and purchased another.

This Program Does Not Protect Against Trojan Horses

Pros: The Price Was Right

Cons: Please Don't Buy! If You Value Your Computer!!!

Review: My Norton AV subscription ran out, and I am buying an Apple computer in the near future. I decided not to pay for another year of Norton AV, and I already had Webroot Spy Sweeper installed into my computer. I made the mistake of upgrading to the anti-virus detection software. A month later, 4 different card credit/debt cards fraudulently used, I found out that I had a Trojan horse installed on my computer. I found out by using free Avast anti-virus. Even before I quarantine the Trojan horse, I ran the Webroot Anti-Virus, and it didn’t found the Trojan horse. I even upgraded to the newest Webroot AV software, and it still didn’t find it. I am running NOD32 and Zone Alarm, and I haven’t any more problems.

This Is Elite Software

Pros: Active Spyware and Anti-Virus Shields. Updates It's Software Often. Updates It's Definitions Multiple Times A Day. Protects From More Threats Than Any Other Software.

Cons: None None None

Review: This is Elite Software. Their in a league of their own far and above the rest. Active Shields in both spyware and anti-virus. It blocks and catches threats before it gets to your system. Interface is user friendly and easy to use. Does not "hog" your computer resources. Scan takes longer than most, but with it blocking much more threats than the rest, this makes sense. Does it really matter how long it takes?? It shouldn't cause its doing its job of protecting your computer. After the 1st initial scan, you don't really need to scan your computer again because of the active shields protecting you. I still recommend scanning atleast once a week anyways because you should never let your guard down no matter how good the software is. It also updates the definitions multiple times a day, seems almost on a hourly basis though. This software hasn't let me down in the past 6 years and the last 6 months or so for the anti-virus part. I can not find anything wrong with this software. I highly recommend because this software keeps getting better and better day by day.

Use Spysweeper for Antispyware NOT antivirus

Pros: GREAT job of removing spyware

Cons: Bit of a resource hog, buy more RAM if it's an issue.

Review: I've been cleaning spyware from computers for 7 years now since Gator first showed up. Spysweeper is the product of choice for our company and the only product we carry of it's kind as it saves our client's money over the long run. It has an early file removal that nothing else has which is what's been needed to remove the worst of worst spyware programs, the ones that load in safe mode, normal mode and the moment you push the power button on your PC.

Fo bets protection, buy a Router, buy the plain vanilla SpySweeper product and a decent Antivirus WITHOUT the worm blocking firewalls (like McAfee and Norton) especially if you network a couple computers together at your home or office.

Viruses are a thing of the past but Spyware is is the top infector right now (Why would someone write a virus for free when they can get paid to write one "legally"?!)

No Spyware in 1 1/2 years

Pros: It maintains a clean system

Cons: Faster full sweeps would be nice (but not really a con)

Review: I've used the program for 1 1/2 years without a single problem. Added the anti-virus when it came out. It works great. It's not obtrusive unless your about to take an action you'll seriously regret (ie. install a file with a trojan attached). I've found it to be much better than what Zone Alarm includes for spyware and anti-virus. Who ever claimed it to be a resource hog, had better recheck their task manager and processes because it has a small footprint and is fairly efficient compared to your alternatives.
And by all means turn on all the shields, they work great. I guess the reviewer was more concerned with having to change his settings than having a great working product. Look elsewhere for a good review because this one isn't it.

Resource Hog!

Pros: Webroot products are generally good.

Cons: I would not run Spysweeper constantly because of its hogging of resources.

Review: I haven't used the combo of Spysweeper with antivirus, but have had Spysweeper alone for years. It's a good program, but a resource hog. You would have to keep an antivirus program running all the time, I would think, so how could that possibly work out?

It amazes me that Spysweeper is like this, as Webroot also has a neat, small program called Window Washer which is great, does what it's supposed to and keeps out of the way of other programs - so I know they can do it!

CNET Underrated this Program

Pros: Fast, Efficient, You can set the CPU to either scan faster or slower

Cons: Pops up now and then with alerts or other messages, not bad unless ur in the middle of Battlefield 2142

Review: I Love this program. It's been the only security program I've used on my new PC for the past four months. I recently installed AVG and Ad-Aware just to make sure nothing slipped past, and both scans turned up nothing. Under items blocked its at 200,000!!!CNET exaggerated how long it takes to do a scan because it only takes 30mins to do a full scan with rootkit enabled. However I am using a powerful machine. If you have a decently new computer and are looking for a great program to keep all that nasty stuff off your computer, I really recommend this. Oh yea and you can install it on up to three computers if you buy it at a store. Not sure about online
