ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6 is the latest stand-alone application from venerable Zone Labs, long respected for its excellent free firewall software. Here, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6 uses this firewall technology to specifically address spyware, providing a deep level of protection; unfortunately, it also requires a significant amount of user intervention until it learns your system. In testing done by CNET Download.com, ZoneAlarm did very well, finishing near the top of the list for removing known spyware, and it finished second only to Lavasoft Ad-aware for overall performance. ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6 costs $29.95 for one year of updates and is also included in ZoneAlarm Pro and in the ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

Installation and setup are pretty straightforward, though after accepting the license terms and clicking Install, you'll still be faced with some annoying optional survey questions that you must either answer or bypass before you can proceed. When you start the program for the first time, a configuration wizard walks you through the initial security settings and provides a quick tutorial. The interface is intuitive, so new users will find it very easy to use, and the interface will be familiar to past ZoneAlarm users.

Not surprisingly, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6 uses a firewall approach to dealing with spyware and adware, and it actually includes three layers of firewall protection to cover the network perimeter, each program you've installed, and your computer's operating system--including the registry and the file system--from attack by spyware. This approach catches and stops much of the malware out there.

ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware's default protections are pretty aggressive. Immediately after installation, it was necessary to click through two warning dialog boxes just to get a browser window open to view the contents of a link from ZoneAlarm's own interface. The documentation warns that there's a required training period for the software as it learns what programs you use to access the Internet, and this requires responding to a lot of warning dialog boxes--some more easy to understand than others. In our informal tests, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6 had to be trained to allow things such as browser and e-mail access to the Internet, iTunes wireless streaming to a home stereo, and even the operation of screenshot-capturing software.

Besides watching network traffic for spyware, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6 can also quarantine suspicious e-mail attachments and block outbound messages that are identified as containing potential malware. Along the top of the main interface is a dashboard that provides constant access to some basic security indicators and functions and shows the active programs and networks. Network traffic is also indicated in the ZoneAlarm system tray icon, which turns into a real-time bar graph showing incoming and outgoing traffic.

In testing performed by CNET Download.com, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware finished its scan in a lightning-fast 3 minutes, 4 seconds. ZoneAlarm includes a Quick Scan button, but to find a deep-scan option, you'll need to dig into the Advanced Settings section. With that said, ZoneAlarm's product performed admirably, finding all of the spyware programs we threw at it and leaving behind only a few trace elements after removal.

ZoneAlarm's integrated help system is fairly thorough, but if you find yourself needing more technical support, there are forums maintained online. You can also pay $2.95 per minute for telephone help during daytime weekday hours (a modest fee compared with pricier phone support from McAfee and Computer Associates) or try your luck with the ZoneAlarm "virtual technical support agent," a program that attempts to field your questions and offer up relevant sections of the documentation.

ok product, not as good as it used to be.

Pros: firewall, antispyware

Cons: added 2 minutes to startup

Review: i really liked zone alarm a year ago, but today it isnt the case. it adds 2 minutes to my startup, then it has to update which makes your computer unusable till it finishes. the antispyware is ok, it catches some stuff adaware and spybot dont, but they also catch some stuff it doesnt. just found out that if you shutdown zone alarm, the firewall still is still on, and blockes everything you havent said you trusted.

Don't buy anything from Zone Alarm

Pros: Good Product

Cons: Lousy Support

Review: Tried the demo and had some problems - emailed for help, got no response. Bought 10 users, still had a problem, still got no help from the company. Switched to Fsecure as they provide telephone support in with their charge. I would STRONGLY not recommend anything to do with Zone Alarm. PC PRO should not recommend products where you cannot get help.

Not a antispyware but a firewall with antispyware capability.

Pros: kernal level monitering system prevents installtion of spyware.

Cons: Does not have extensive spyware signature database.

Review: First of all it cannot be considered a antispyware but a firewall with antispyware capability. It is same as zonealarm firewall but minus privacy and identity theft protection.

Needs more work to bring it up to the high Zone Alarm standard

Pros: Packaged wih ZA

Cons: Seems to miss a lot

Review: I am a big fan of ZA but on first test it missed over 17 items (2 serious) that Ad-Aware found. I am currently looking to change Ad-Aware as it also missed items found by other scans so no real faith in the Zone Alarm version ... AS YET

ZoneLabs never had a good rep

Pros: None that I know of

Cons: ZL's former rep, now not even same company

Review: ZoneLabs has been dead in the water ever since XP came out. Why people believed that this company knew anything about firewalls is beyond me, as their product turned out to be the cause of more problems than solutions. Now, people are supposed to trust this same company with antispyware? I wouldn't trust it with the care of a dead dog.

I have it installed on four machines and still prefer it to the other products

Pros: Integration with other security functions (AV/Firewall)

Cons: Like other packages it fails to detect some threats.

Review: Very good product all in all. I do find myself in agreement with some of the commentary about the change of ownership but of late they seem to be regaining some of the quality of Zone Labs.

Supporting a complex product that was not created within your own organization is a bear. As one who as often been in the position of doing so, I will state that success is highly dependent on many factors such as the quality and quantity of the internal documentation and training provided by the orginators and whether the business arrangement between the companies facilitated the retention of key staff members from the originators organization.

ZA rep in the dumper

Pros: used to be good stuff

Cons: now junk software

Review: I was not aware that ZA had been purchased by Checkpoint. That probably explains why the ZA Security Suite is now garbage. Upgrades blasted my email access through Outlook. Even the recommended "clean install" did not work. When I finally gave up and removed the software, I had to go through a laborious remnant removal since the unistall left detritus all over my hard drive.

My recommendation is to stick with the free stuff. Always sad when the original developers sell out and the new owners run the business into the ground.

What positive reputation, Zone labs has not existed for over a year but in name only.

Pros: Zone Labs used to produce a fine firewall

Cons: Zone Labs since the purchase by Checkpoint is a disaster

Review: How long will Checkpoint software be able to rely on the reputation established by Zone Labs prior to their purchase. Since the purchase paid users have been beta testers, and the software releases have been bug riddden, code bloated messses. Zone Labs acquired a reputation that is no longer deserved since the purchase by Checkpoint. Don't let the name fool you.
