ZoneAlarm is known for its award-winning personal firewalls, but it also makes a killer antispyware application. After starting from scratch a few years ago, ZoneAlarm has steadily improved its scanning and detection capabilities so that the latest version of ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware now provides top-notch antispyware protection and as an added bonus also includes its award-winning personal firewall protection. We also like its automatic updates and gaming option, allowing you to temporarily turn off those nettlesome alerts while in the middle of gameplay. In short, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware delivers the most features for the least cost. But we recommend spending a little bit more and getting our Editors' Choice ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0, which also includes the award-winning Kaspersky antivirus engine and real-world identity theft protection as well.

Setup
We downloaded ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware's 15MB file and, after opening the file, let the program wizard step us through the installation. We then rebooted. Within 10 minutes, we were up and running. Upon reboot, ZoneAlarm invited us to view a Flash-based tutorial--none of the other antispyware products we tested were this user-friendly. And at $19, ZoneAlarm is a steal, roughly 10 dollars less than its paid competition.

Should you want to remove ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware, there's an uninstall icon provided in the All Programs list. After our program uninstall, we found no traces of ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware remaining on our system. Most of the antispyware apps we tested had clean uninstalls.

Information design at its best, ZoneAlarm is user-friendly and informative without being overcrowded.

Interface
Other vendors could learn a thing or two about information design from ZoneAlarm. In general, its clean interface packs in a lot of valuable information, yet never feels overcrowded. Left-hand navigation provides access to features, while tabs across the top reveal more advanced configuration options. The design is consistent and modular across all the products within the ZoneAlarm family, so if you've ever used one product, you'll be familiar with the interface in another.

Features
ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware is not only the most user-friendly but perhaps the most feature-packed antispyware application we reviewed this year. ZoneAlarm is the only standalone antispyware application to include a personal firewall. It does not, however, feature an antivirus app, but that doesn't seem to hurt its test results. In fact, by providing personal firewall protection at the perimeter, on the desktop, and in the system kernel, ZoneAlarm does a better job than most antivirus apps at preventing infection.

We like ZoneAlarm's game mode feature, which temporarily suppresses most security alerts and prevents them from interrupting your play. That doesn't mean you aren't protected, you are; it's just that you don't have to swat away pop-up messages in addition to playing your game. And we like the firewall's ability to automatically change security settings from a protected LAN network to a wireless and alert you whenever your wireless network changes. None of the other standalone antispyware applications we tested had these features.

We also like ZoneAlarm's automatic update process; some of the other products we tested asked that we remember to update the product, or displayed notices that the signature files were out of date. ZoneAlarm updates include new signature-file definitions and additions to its spy site blocking lists. The latter means ZoneAlarm will prevent your browser from accidentally visiting sites known to host spyware, further limiting your chances of exposure.

Even the spyware results screen is clean and well-informed; no need to open a browser to get the latest information on any potential spyware identified by ZoneAlarm.

Performance
ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware is very fast, scanning our entire laptop within several minutes as compared to Webroot Spy Sweeper with Antivirus, which required more than one hour to complete. To achieve that result, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware at times used up to fifty percent of our system's resources, but did so for a significantly shorter amount of time than other products we tested. But speed doesn't always ensure accuracy. In this case, it does. For the second year in a row, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware remains one of our top two antispyware apps.

In exclusive testing by CNET Labs, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware's active shields identified and blocked six out of eight spyware samples we attempted to install, missing only Clickpix and When U Save Now. For scanning and removing existing spyware samples, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware caught seven out of eight, missing only Clickpix. As for the removal itself, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware removed spyware residue in six out of eight cases, placing it among the highest for removal.

And, for the record, we were able to run ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware alongside other antispyware packages, including Spy Sweeper with Antivirus, with no trouble.

Support
Included within the setup for ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware is a Flash-based tutorial, something that none of the other antispyware apps provided. The built-in Help file is also excellent, thorough, and very specific, effectively balancing detail and clarity. And the ZoneAlarm online forums are active, with users worldwide eager and willing to answer your questions--something that none of the other antispyware vendors offer. Unfortunately, support by phone from Check Point is only available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday (excluding major holidays), and costs a hefty $2.95 per minute--about the same as what McAfee and Symantec charge for their phone support.

Conclusion
At $20, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware is the least expensive of the paid antispyware apps we tested, and still one of the best. ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware includes an award-winning personal firewall that makes up for its lack of antivirus protection. But why stop with just antispyware and firewall protection? We recommend getting our Editors' Choice ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0, which includes everything here plus the Kaspersky antivirus engine and identity theft protection as well.

The Best Currently Available

Pros: Zone Alarm scanned my C/drive in three minutes

Cons: None. I have Security Suit

Review: I prefer Zone Alarm to both Norton & McAfee. Over the years Norton has screwed up my software programs many times, and McAfee is a joke. Zone Alarm puts both of them to shame in performance and price.

Gets the job done.

Pros: Scans thoroughly and updates signatures hourly.

Cons: Scan time for a deep scan can take a long time.

Review: I have run the ZoneAlarm security suite for three years now and this product is included in it. It offers quite a few options for scanning and actions. I have never had a problem with the operation of my computer and it did not slow the computer down like others stated. Norton/Symantec on the other hand caused the boot time to go through the roof! While I do agree with one other review stating "buy a router" software firewalls do alert you to what programs are doing. So if malware tries to connect to the Internet you will know it. A hardware firewall keeps the hackers out, not malware.

Cluttered my desktop with one-by-one alerts

Pros: It probably stops spyware

Cons: More trouble than it's worth

Review: There appears to be no usable support for this program. I would get an announcement every few seconds that some intruder was trying to send e-mail from my account. It required me to deny these attempts, one-by-one. I could do nothing else but hit the deny button. Why bother?

How could CNET recommend this???

Pros: Appears to work???

Cons: SLOWS DOWN my computer! Not user friendly!

Review: This program may work against some spyware, although I probably not computer-savvy enough to really know. What I do know is that it slows down everything. It takes the computer a long time to start up. When I open up firefox I literally sit there for 3-4 minutes before I can access anything on the web. This is not acceptable.
Also... it is always giving me a little pop-up box asking if I want to allow some process I don't know, to do something I don't understand. And it give NO criteria to judge whether I should answer YES or NO! Am I messing up the operation of a legitimate program, or allowing spyware??? No way to know!!! This is less than useless!

Killed internet access

Pros: None that I could find

Cons: Disconnected from internet - had to uninstall to regain access

Review: Killed my internet connection upon installation. That's one way to make sure you don't get spyware! (Running XP with all new hardware.) Quick check of Zone Alarm forums revealed this as a common problem that wasn't necessarily fixable by taking recommended steps. I uninstalled it and my connection came right back. Sorry, but I can't endorse Zone Alarm with these kind of bugs.

TERRIBLE! So buggy!

Pros: Good firewall, good detection

Cons: Extremely buggy and unstable

Review: Despite it's good detection and aggressive firewall, Zonealarm AS is too buggy to be effective. I like that it's aggressive but not when it causes me to have to reboot my PC 2 or 3 times so that it can load up properly. Also i was tipped off that it was dodgy when it changed my google home page icon (the icon in the address bar of internet explorer) to the "Z" icon assocciated with ZoneAlarm instead of the normal G google icon. I decided to uninstall it - lucky i googled that before i did. SO many people having trouble uninstalling it! They weren't able to connect to the net after rebooting, etc etc. Thankfully, there are instructions for proper uninstallation at http://www.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html
Obviously it's dodgy if it has two pages of uninstall instructions! Make sure you check it out. I'm going to uninstall before it does any more damage I've read about...
Updated
Just to let you know - those uninstallation instructions were good. Zonealarm is GONE and my system performance is BACK! Woo. The Google icon is still gone (its a generic internet explorer icon now, instead of a Zonealarm one), but I can live with that! No more hangs or reboots! Hurray!
Updated
The google icons are back up :) Stupid ZoneAlarm

Will not work on 64bit machines

Pros: Don't know

Cons: Will not run on XP64bit

Review: I'm using SpyBot,SpywareBlaster & Windows Defender on clean install. ALL these apps work on 64bit machines and are FREE. I pass all the other scans I have run (using apps that WILL run on 64bit) so why pay for one??

Spysweeper is still the best and software firewalls are useless.

Pros: None. Go buy a Router, Spysweeper and Kaspersky AV

Cons: Software firewall prevents basic sharing, printing and antispyware does not protect you

Review: For a firewall, go buy a Router.
For Antispyware go buy Spysweeper which is the only antispyware product out there that is able to use early file removal to remove offending spyware programs before they load up when Windows starts. Since most spyware programs that are REALLY hard to remove (Clickpix and When U Save Now are super easy to remove, wonder what ones this Anti-spyware program actually "stopped" were). Can it remove zlob properly or variants of Aurora-ABetterInternet or PestCapture. If it can't do that then don't buy it.

Argh! Not Compatible w/NIS 2007

Pros: Might be a good software

Cons: Disabled NIS upon installation

Review: So, I downloaded a trial version of Zone Alarm Anti-Spyware 7.0 and found that it immediately caused a conflict with my Norton Internet Security 2007 and disabled my NIS firewall as well as various other features. Norton is new to the Anti-spyware arena and I'm hesitant to trust it alone without an added software package but I guess I can't use Zone Alarm. Heads up!
