Apple iPod Classic accessories

Jasmine France Jasmine France, Senior Associate Editor November 17, 2009

So you've managed to get your hands on one of the world's most popular MP3 players, the Apple iPod Classic. This sleek and stylish device will keep you plenty entertained for sure, but you'll soon realize there's a lot more fun to be had if you move beyond the confines of what comes in the box. For one thing, those stock Apple earbuds aren't the best-sounding--or most comfortable--headphones to be had. The first step is to upgrade, and our top headphones list is an excellent place to start. Next, consider protecting your investment or even dressing it up a bit. GelaSkins are a great way to add personal style, especially when it comes to the iPod Classic, which is not available in an array of color options. Then, there's DLO's HipCase Leather Folio flip case, which retains an elegance while shielding the iPod from damage.

The iPod Classic's relatively large size and hard-drive memory aren't the best for jogging, but that doesn't mean you should ban it from the gym. Just keep it out of the way and clean of sweat with the Marware SportSuit Convertible, which combines a sweatproof case, belt clip, and armband. And this particular iPod is ideal for your travels, especially if you pair it with DLO's UrbanShell with Kickstand, which protects it from other loose items in your carry-on as well as props it up for hands-free video-viewing. Finally, there is no reason your music should be confined just to personal listening. Share tunes on the go with the Griffin Journi, which does double duty as a case during transport. Or create a living room sound system with the Altec Lansing Mix iMT800, which has a retro design befitting the Classic's name.

The iPod Classic is also ideal for tedious commutes. Pair it with a cassette adapter or an FM transmitter, such as the EzCube or the iRiver AFT-100, in order to port tunes to your car's stereo.

The Bottom Line GelaSkins are artistic stickers for your iPod that do double duty as scratch protectors. Stick one on to make your iPod unique again. For iPod owners who aren't superpicky about sound and want an ultracompact portable speaker system with a sweet design and a nice array of features, the Griffin Journi is a decent option. The design of Altec Lansing's Mix iMT800 may not appeal to everyone, but its winning combination of good performance, lots of oomph, and portability makes it one of the best iPod speaker options out there.
