With its clip-on design and multitouch screen, the sixth generation of the Apple iPod Nano is an impressive feat of design and engineering. But if all you're looking for is a functional music player to keep in your car or take to the gym, you can stretch your dollar further with an iPod alternative. In fact, a few of these MP3 players offer features you simply can't find on the latest iPod Nano, such as video playback, MicroSD memory expansion, or a built-in microphone for voice recording.

As the No. 2 leading seller of MP3 players, SanDisk's line of Sansa audio players offer an incredible value. Its Sansa Clip Zip is roughly the same size as the Nano, includes tactile controls, and can be picked up for around half the cost.

If you're considering the Nano as an exercise companion, check out the Sony W-Series Walkman. It cuts the cable clutter entirely by integrating an MP3 player directly into a lightweight pair of sweat-resistant headphones. There's also the Haier Trainer, which includes a built-in heart-rate monitor, pedometer, and a stopwatch.

The Bottom Line The SanDisk Sansa Clip+ is an excellent successor to the line, offering a fitness-friendly design with a built-in belt-clip, a simple interface, solid sound quality, and plenty of handy features--all for an ultralow price. It's an unbeatable value. SanDisk's tongue-twister of an MP3 player is a stupefying value and its practical clip-on design is perfect for the gym. If you're looking for a sweat-resistant, all-in-one solution for rocking out at the gym, the Sony W-Series Walkman will provide just that. The Haier America Trainer is a suitable option for fitness fanatics who want to kill multiple birds with one stone, as it's an MP3 player, a pedometer, a heart rate monitor, and has fitness-tracking software in one handy package. In the world of budget MP3 players, the Philips GoGear Spark is a diamond in the rough, offering an attractive balance of features, style, and usability.
