Hot on the heels of Logitech announcing its $79.99 Ultrathin Keyboard mini, Belkin has trotted out the very similar-looking FastFit Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard Case for iPad Mini. It, too, carries a list price of $79.99.
Like the Logitech, the relatively lightweight and very slim (7mm thick) aluminum case/keyboard acts as a screen cover for you iPad Mini and adheres magnetically like Apple's Smart Cover (the FastFit has the autowake feature). When you're ready to use it, you pull it off, prop up the iPad in the slot built into the keyboard, and pair it with your iPad via Bluetooth. The only problem with it is that it doesn't protect the back of your iPad, which can get scratched up fairly easily if you aren't careful.
The keyboard features Belkin’s TruType keyboard, which the company says provides "well-spaced keys for fast and accurate typing." It adds that "each key has a spring mechanism that provides tactile feedback when struck, enabling fast, intuitive, and comfortable typing." Battery life is rated at up to three months (there's a built-in rechargeable 200mAh battery that charges via USB).
I recently reviewed Belkin's Portable Keyboard Case for the iPad Mini, which appears to feature the same keyboard layout. I liked that keyboard case but thought it had some drawbacks, one of which was the lack of a dedicated apostrophe/quotes key (you have to hit the Function key to create an apostrophe). From the picture it appears the FastFit Keyboard Case is missing the same button
No word on exactly when the FastFit Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard Case for iPad Mini will ship, but Belkin says it's taking preorders soon. I'll let you know how it stacks up against the Logitech as soon as a review sample turns up.
