    "Worst. Installer. Ever."

by mcgmatt on November 26, 2007

    Pros: Ergonomic, Nice looking.

Cons: Two reboots, Mouse software for a keyboard? Loud space bar.

Summary: Let's start with the obvious. This is a keyboard. So I expect to have to install keyboard software. But could someone explain to me why Microsoft needs to forcibly uninstall my my Logitech Mouseware and install Microsoft Intellipoint? I do not and have never owned a Microsoft mouse. So why, during setup, are they asking me which Microsoft mouse I'm using?

Worst of all, the installer required TWO reboots. I think SP2 for Windows XP only asked me to reboot once. This is ridiculous.

And after all that, the function of the zoom controller in the middle of the keyboard can't be customized. Yes, you can change zoom speed, but I don't have vision problems, so zoom is generally useless to me. If they allowed me to use it for scrolling, I would believe that some real thought was actually put into the software.

Last but not least, the space bar sticks, then pops down hard, so as I'm typing, it's a few keystrokes - then POP - more keystrokes - POP - so annoying. If you share an office with someone, this is sure to make them hate you after a few hours. Left thumb's not as bad, but there's no way to use the space bar with my right thumb without it being loud. If it's not quiet within a few days, this thing's going back to the store.

I have a Microsoft Natural keyboard from around 2001, and after 6 years of heavy use, it's still quieter and more comfortable than this, so MS might want to re-think their "Advanced Ergonomic Design" and go back to basic ergonomics that worked. I only bought this because I needed a USB keyboard - the old one is PS2.
