Microsoft's Wireless Optical Desktop Elite keyboard-and-mouse combo isn't nearly as awe inspiring as Logitech's DiNovo Media Desktop, but with tons of programmable options, a horizontal scrollwheel, and significant improvements in battery life, it's well suited for work and play. Plus, at $105, you could buy two Elite packages for every DiNovo.

Based on RF technology, the black-and-gray Desktop Elite is a cinch to set up: simply install the IntelliPoint software from the included disc, hook up the wireless receiver, and connect the mouse and keyboard. The simple software allows you to customize the mouse buttons and reassign the keyboard's multitude of specialty keys, which lie along the top of the keyboard. Alternatively, you can program these keys to open everything from apps to individual documents simply by holding the key down for several seconds over the page you want to assign them to.

Other specialized keys include ones for controlling music playback, pulling up the Windows calculator, logging off the current user, and putting your PC to sleep. On the keyboard's far left, you'll find a built-in scrollwheel and Back and Forward buttons for Internet surfing. Like the mouse's scrollwheel, this one can navigate pages both horizontally and vertically, an especially useful trick for ultrawide Excel spreadsheets.

The Elite's keyboard is far less shallow than the DiNovo's and offers an equally excellent (although very different) typing experience. In our tests, keys felt springy and made a satisfying clicking noise. The built-in wrist pad, covered with nice, fake-leather material, brings a bit of luxury to play. Our only complaint is that the keyboard seems to catch and reveal dust and grime more than competing models do.

As for the IntelliMouse Explorer, the device is formed to fit perfectly under your right hand, and it has the five buttons we require from a higher-end mouse; however, it's missing the DiNovo mouse's button for cycling through open programs, as well as buttons for quickly moving up and down pages. The horizontal- and vertical-scrolling wheel worked well, although we didn't appreciate its cushy, gelatinous feel.

The Optical Desktop Elite's biggest claim to fame is Microsoft's recent innovations in battery life. The company claims that the mouse and keyboard can last a whopping six months on just two standard, AA batteries and three months on just one battery. Although we haven't tested the devices for a full six-month cycle yet, they're still going strong after more than three months.

Can't turn it off No support No documentation

Pros: Just bought it, nice ergonometrics, reasonable price. Bought with a wireless mouse, run off the same usb. I am a touch typist and liked the feel. Liked the graphic key identification and the shortcut descriptions on the front of the keys.

Cons: This is a battery powered device, and not only is it not rechargeable, but there appears to be no way to TURN IT OFF!! Buried in the Hardward properties is the option to allow the computer to turn it off. DOESN"T WORK, greyed out.

Review: Most basic of all functions (on/off) not available (some of us would like to use another keyboard or, heaven forbid, conserve battery life.

Looks good, works good, at least at first. C+ or B-

Pros: I like wireless feature as well as the fake leather wrist rest. I also enjoy this product's programmable shortcut keys and the overall design and good feel when typing. The keys operate smoothly with minimal noise.

Cons: I dislike how the mouse completely stopped working after only two years of normal use. The next track/previous track keys on the keyboard only work sometimes. One of the hinged feet on the bottom of the keyboard simply broke off, with normal use.

Review: The good features are obviously that the keyboard/mouse combo are wireless and you can operate them up to a certain distance from the transceiver. The mouse is optical which is much better than the standard ball type mouse. The keyboard has programmable shortcut & function keys at the top & left that make the overall computing experience slightly more convenient. If you want, you can open as many as 10 programs & 4 folders "instantly," just by pushing the shortcut keys (one at a time) Additionally, the transceiver may be plugged in with either the attached USB cable or the attached keyboard-only connector (for older systems or systems that already have all the USB ports used).

While the product may seem friendly at first, there are also bad things to consider. I bought this product for under $100.00 from a store like Best Buy or Costco. Even if that is all you pay, it still is not worth it. Here's why: my mouse simply stopped working after only two years of normal use. So I had to throw that away. Both the keyboard & the mouse can only send their signals a certain distance (I would estimate up to 15 feet on full battery charge). Still, that's not really an issue since that is too far to reasonably see what you're doing on the monitor anyway. The next track/previous track keys only work sometimes, which can get frustrating while listening to music. The mouse had buttons that were extremely sensitive. They would go off when resting fingers with light-as-a-feather pressure. This was especially noticeable with the forward/back buttons mounted on the left side of the mouse. It got quite annoying. Finally, there is no provision for charging the batteries. You have to either use standard batteries or rechargeable batteries that you recharge in a completely separate device.

In conclusion, I am very careful with my electronics. I don't recall ever spilling liquid on - or otherwise mistreating - this particular keyboard/mouse combo. Hopefully this review provides a little insight as to what you can expect or beware of when using this product.

Updated on Aug 18, 2009

I upgrade the star rating from 2.5 to 3. The reason is because I just figured out the next track/previous track keys actually do work all the time. I just had a bug to work out with Winamp. I deselected the checkbox in the preferences for enabling multimedia key support. Then they worked just fine. Yes, it sounds weird because you would expect the program to ignore the keys altogether. But apparently they do the trick now, with or without said checkbox being checked.

My apologies, it appears I may have jumped the gun. This keyboard sucks. 2.5 stars. The multimedia keys work intermittently. I hate this piece of American commissioned Thai crap. As soon as I get a better keyboard, I am throwing this thing off a cliff.

Updated on Aug 19, 2009

OK my bad guys, it's back to 3 stars. I FINALLY figured out what was causing the intermittent function of the multimedia keys. Although the built in buttons on front of my laptop are not affected by this simple bug in Winamp, the Microsoft keyboard is. All I had to do was disable the pop up notifcations (that pop up in the lower right corner of the screen every time a new song begins). Now the buttons work like a charm, every time! The mouse definitely sucked though.

If you think my review sucks, I'm sorry. This is my first time.

Communication issues prompt lower rating

Pros: Includes USB Bluetooth dongle, decent battery life, scroll wheel on keyboard

Cons: No rechargeable battery, Bluetooth may require multiple pairings, occaisionally keys are repeatedly pressed

Review: This keyboard would be great, except that it is constantly dogged by communication issues. The biggest connection issue is that the keyboard and mouse will sometimes lose its pairing with my laptop. I will need to go through the pairing ritual at least twice each month. Other users in my building will often have to pair their devices once per week!

The other issue that I have yet to find solution for is that the keyboard will act as if a key is being held down, despite the fact that it is not. I have the latest drivers (IntelliType software) for the keyboard installed, but I will sometimes accidentally delete my entire inbox because the keyboard acts as if the delete key is being held down when I press it to delete a single message. As far as I can tell, it is an issue with the keyboard itself, as my mouse will continue to operate while messages in my inbox disappear, or while I get three lines of the same character in Word.

If you are looking for a reliable keyboard, pass on this one. The mouse isn't so bad, but it, too, loses the Bluetooth pairing now and then.

Overall-Poor

Pros: Can't Recall

Cons: Intermittent Performance, Battery Eater, Prematurely Failed

Review: This is an awful product. When new, it went to sleep randomly, had to be reconnected frequently, thus operation was not reliable.

These problems continued for a year-others also emerged, including prompts that the batteries were low (even though they were frea=shlt recharged), and diminishing range.

Today, it has failed. I will try the Belkin- no more Microsoft mess for me.

Avoid this product!!

Not good for laptop users; flimsy construction

Pros: Good mouse

Cons: Poor construction; f-lock must be set every time you plug in; bad home/end-del-pgup/dn layout

Review: This keyboard has really disappointed. After a few months of very light use it is now almost impossible to use for typing because the keys stick so much. Overall, drops my speed of touch typing by about 75%. Also, every time you unplug and re-plug the keyboard or restart your computer, the F-lock turns off. This means that suddenly the keys on the keyboard don't do what their supposed to do. The connecting USB cable is long and unwieldy especially for a laptop user - it's a cordless keyboard that requires you lay an unusually long cord across your desk. Finally, the keyboard has a VERY bad vertical home-end-delete-pgup/pgdn layout that forces the "Insert" key to be overloaded onto the PrtScn button - both of which I use frequently.

Don't buy this product!!

Pros: Looks great, feels great

Cons: Connectivity problems

Review: When I first started using this keyboard and mouse, I absolutely loved it! Great looks and feel to both devices. Easy to set-up and use! But after a couple of weeks the problems started. It started out with connectivity problems with the keyboard, even though the distance from the receiver was less than 2 foot away. The software said the batteries were strong, but I replaced them anyway - didn't help. Then the keyboard started transmitting keystrokes I was not hitting. Then more of them. Then even more, until the keyboard was TOTALLY USELESS. I evidently threw it away. Sad. The mouse was flawless though. Don't waste your money. Honest review. Looks Great, but just doesn't last. Also, the F keys default to non-F key settings, when you change them back to F key settings it gets reset back the non-F key settings at the next start-up - UGH!

keyboard great, mouse ok until it breaks

Pros: plenty of programmable shortcut buttons, long battery life

Cons: pretty weak range, mouse not sturdy

Review: I've had this for about a year and a half. After about a year the mouse stopped working. Didn't give up completely, just the right button. It was ok unless you had to right click anything. Anyway, I got the new logitech wireless laser mouse. It's higher quality than the microsoft anyway.

The keyboard is great, and I still use it. Doesn't have long range, probably 4 feet or so. But it's great to put in your lap while you sit back in your chair. It has plenty of shortcut buttons that you can assign to just about anything, even folders.

My opinion is logitech is better, but this was cheaper. Actually it was a gift, so I couldn't complain.

Looks great and useful functions that doesn't really work well

Pros: Nice key board layout and features.

Cons: Letters on key faded too easily, Buttons must be press at certain angle, Ctlr+ command rarely work.

Review: I've been a logitec user all my life, but this keyboard caught my eyes as well as its features. But after three years of using it, I find it more and more harder to use. Instead of becoming used to the keyboard and the keyboard becomes easier to use after the break-in period, it actually become a pain to type. Ctrl+C and +V which I use often in my writing rarely works. I sit only a feet or two away from the receiver and the keyboard does not response! Wish I did not purchased it!

All I can say is, ehh.

Pros: It's a blast, when it works.

Cons: The keyboard, often does not work.

Review: It was quite easy to install and works at a considerable distance. The keyboard also has many useful functions. But, the keyboard seldeom works and can't seen by the computer, despite what the battery signal strength says.

Atleast the mouse always works.

Control Cap-lock and shift keys have delay and signal strenth range is poor

Pros: Nice style, no wires to deal with.

Cons: slow response when suing shift lock and cap lock keys

Review: I have had terrible problems with the mouse and keyboard losing signal even with the transceiver only a few inches away from the mouse and keyboard with new batteries. When using the capital lock and shift or control keys, I have to push them 2 or 3 times to get the cap lock to turn on or off and to get capital letters at the beginning of sentences. It only lasted a year before the keyboard quite working all too together.

Great for a keyboard mouse combo in this price range...

Pros: Keyboard has a solid feel not flimsy like some, the mouse is very comfortable and accurate

Cons: The keyboard will skip from time to time which is a problem especially if you do a lot of typing, for gaming the mouse will suck a battery dry in a hurry especially with action FPS

Review: All in all this combo has lasted longer then any I've worn out in the past. With the big keys and larger mouse this board would be great for older folks with vision impairments or even diminished motor skills. I myself am a quadriplegic and have very little trouble using both mouse and keyboard.

Using on a Mac

Pros: Buttons control iTunes and other shortcuts, tiltwheel, wireless

Cons: RF instead of native Mac OS X bluetooth support, runs on regular AA's

Review: I use this keyboard and mouse at home with my PowerBook and the set is great. I originally bought it for my PC but now use it on my Mac. The keyboard is very comfortable, as is the mouse. The tilt-wheel is a must for scrolling through long timelines in Final Cut and graphics and music editing applications. The buttons control iTunes (something the PowerBook itself is lacking big time- dedicated iTunes buttons), which makes controlling your music much easier.

The drivers were a snap to install from Microsoft's web page. The keyboard and mouse already worked plug n' play, but the extra buttons didn't work without the driver. Also the drivers have an option to assign the command key to the "normal" position on the keyboard. Well worth the money for a peripheral used on a day-to-day basis. It is pretty weak for CNET to put "scroll wheel feels spongy" as one of the major downsides. In fact, this would be preference of the user, and as far as I'm concerned I have experienced no problem with this.

The only problem I have is that it is RF. I understand there is a bluetooth model out there but I'm guessing it wouldn't have native Mac OS X support anyway. Understandable, since this is a Microsoft product, but occasionally a fan, cordless phone, wireless network, etc. will cause interference. Also wish it had a rechargeable battery system (like lithium-ion) instead of running off of AA's. Only have to replace them every few months but still an added expense.

At least we know Microsoft's good for something ;)

The keyboard is the only saving grace

Pros: One reciver instead of one for the mouse and one for the keyboard. Lots of features on the keyboard.

Cons: Mouse keeps on saying it is running low on bateries but is not. Cannot turn off the warning feature. Having problems getting the F1 F2 ect. keys working.

Review: This keyboard mouse duo was a great idea executed poorly. The setup looks cool and is kept clean by having only one reciver. However, I have had problems getting the F1 F2 F3 ect. buttons working. The most anoying problem is that when I am playing a game, the wireless mouse will stop the game and tell me that the battery is low. This is very frusterating when playing online. I have a Logitech wireless at home and I have never in the 4-5 years I have owned it had a problem. I wish I had gotten that one.

Excellent Choice

Pros: Wrist Pad, Tilt Wheel, Hot Keys, Quality and ergonomics

Cons: Inititial setup, mouse seems like it could be more accurate

Review: In my opinion this is a great duo. I am upgrading from a logitech wireless duo to this and it is like night and day. The scroll functions and tilt wheels on both the keyboard and mouse are excellent. the wrist pad makes typing very comfortable and the plastics and rubber materials seem like good quality. I appreciate hotkeys and media buttons which have a sturdy, not tacky feel to them. The keys are positioned well and I have had no issues with reach during normal typing. I have been able to get 8-9 feet away from the USB RF with the keyboard and still have coherent typing. When I first plugged it in it took a few trys to get the duo to connect with the RF, but after that it was smooth sailing and the driver interface was intuative. Also I felt like the mouse could have been a little more accurate for the price, but I like the fact that it does not "Jump" as some wireless mouses do when moving them fast (i.e. for games). I feel I definetly made a good choice.

Pros: great design. Good functionality. Many buttons to open programs and such. Very good for hooking up to tv and chillin in bed(not gaming in bed) I DON'T have any clue why people say it's bad for gaming. I play many games(ex: Unreal Tournament, WC3, Medal

Cons: Haven't found any yet. I do have to admit that all the companies could devise a better wireless range. Also, it would be great if they had the *option* to integrate with 802.11 networking

Great Keyboard - Unless you want to play

Pros: Solid performance for general use.

Cons: No to gaming. Serious issues with key repeats that cannot be overcome. I like the keyboard but if I want to game I need to change kyboard and software.

What's the RANGE?

Pros: Seems like a nice product

Cons: NO ONE will specify the range of the device. If it's "up to six feet" like all of the worthless wireless keyboards out there, then who wants it?
