Think Outside--well, the name says it all. When it comes to PDA keyboard design, the company's Stowaway Universal Bluetooth keyboard is a perfect example of thinking outside of the box, and with it, Think Outside has successfully delivered a fully functional input device in a sleek package. Compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled PDA running Windows Mobile 2003 or any smart phone with Windows Mobile 2003 or the Symbian OS (support for Palm handhelds will be added around December 2004), this $150 keyboard accessory is a perfect travel companion for the road warrior or anyone who wants to type on their mobile device.

Encased in an attractive silver and charcoal-gray package, the biggest advantage of the Stowaway is its thinness, unlike the Targus and Belkin keyboards, which are bulky and thick. At 5.5 by 3.9 by 0.5 inches when closed and weighing 5.6 ounces, the svelte Stowaway glides right into your bag for easy storage; better yet, you can use the included carrying case. To open the keyboard, you lift the PDA stand, which acts like a clasp, then press a release button on the left side. VoilĂ ! Unlike other accordion-style keyboards that fold out, the Stowaway utilizes a sliding mechanism--a smooth and innovative touch--and it locks into place so that you can even work with it on your lap. The detachable PDA stand lets you position your PDA in Portrait or Landscape mode, but it doesn't provide the most secure support. This is no matter, though, as you probably won't be moving the whole setup while in use. The bottom of the device has two rubber grips that prevent the keyboard from moving around when on a flat surface, and a release lever is located at the top right for when you're ready to pack up.

We paired the Stowaway with the high-end Dell Axim X30, and getting started was a breeze. Just insert the installation CD, and a wizard walks you through the setup process. After a hotsync operation, you'll find a Stowaway Keyboard utility that helps you connect the two devices; configure settings, such as key-repeat rate and caps-lock notification; and program up to 10 hot-hey functions. You'll also find the Stowaway listed under your input options, along with the standard Block Recognizer, Transcriber, Keyboard, and Letter Recognizer. To turn on the Stowaway, you have to simultaneously press the Ctrl, blue Fn, and green Fn buttons; a small green LED will blink to indicate activation.

The Stowaway's 18mm spacing made for a comfortable typing experience, as the buttons were well positioned and tactile. In fact, the keyboard was almost comparable to those found on most notebooks, but the company had to make some compromises to achieve that goal. There are no dedicated numeral or symbol keys; instead, they share space with the top row of letters. You can access them via the blue and green Fn keys. We appreciated the fact that you could open applications, such as Contacts, Word, Excel, and Tasks, and documents with the keyboard and not have to touch the PDA. As for battery life, the Stowaway operates on two included AAA batteries, and Think Outside says with intermittent operation, it can last four to six months; with heavy usage, expect three months. We've had the keyboard for the past three weeks, and it's still going strong.

great for iphone 4

Pros: small, portable, has a stand

Cons: poor number keys, loses bluetooth connectivity

Review: so i bought this for my palm pilot years ago, but resurrected it when i bought my old nokia e65. it worked great for long texts and emails. i then purchased an iphone 3g, which did not allow for bluetooth keyboards. now comes iphone 4 and voila! it's relavant again! it's great for again long emails and texts. i also use it on my htpc as well. if you don't like the pda stand, you can take it off.

the only drawbacks are that the number keys need to pressed with a FN key. yuck. they should have added another row of keys. i would have not minded the extra size and weight. the other is that it doesn't remember that i've paired with with the iphone many a times. so i have to go into the iphone, forget device, and reconnect device. a little bit of a pain.

but it makes up for it by making my iphone much more of a serious emailing device. if you can find it, get it!

Fantastic device for new iPad owners!

Pros: Small, fold-able, compact, light. The construction is rock solid, and the outer casing is made of aluminum!

Cons: No separate number keys (have to use Fn, and regular keys), but that is one way to keep the keyboard so small with relatively normal sized keys!

Had mine for years, love it

Pros: easy to use, but just got a new blackberry curve; my Q was synced, but it's now asking me for keyboard code?? Anyone know if that's just a standard four or five digit code?

Cons: Nothing, except pairing again to my new PDA

Review: I would not trade it for any other bluetooth keyboard.

WM6 driver solution found

Pros: Great keyboard

Cons: No easy instructions to get it to work on WM6 PPCs

Review: Do not bother to install any software for WM6. Use the default bluetooth option. search for keyboard, start a pair, when asked for a passcode, type 1234. Click next. Then on the keyboard, immediately type 1234 and press enter. It should pair and you're done. The shortcuts on the keyboard will not work but standard keyboard abilities are fine. Thank goodness! I didn't want to have to throw away my favourite foldaway keyboard.

... And what about WM6???

Pros: This keyboard rocks for touchtyping!

Cons: This keyboard does not work with WM6!

Review: I have used this keyboard now for over a year, with my Samsung i830 and i730 (long story), and it works flawlessly. Fast, consistent. Sometimes drops connection, but workable. I moved to Europe, got an O2 XDA Orbit (oh yeah, let's talk about having GPS on a PDA Phone!) but the driver stack does not work with WM6, and iGo/ Stowaway has no plans for the correct driver. This is totally disappointing. I tried everything I could think of, and there are really no good alternatives to this on the market from what I can see.

Great design, bad software

Pros: Slim Profile, well put together keyboard device

Cons: Palm keyboard driver causes my Treo 650 to infinitly reboot

Review: I have a Cingular Treo 650 Running Treo650-1b17-cng Software (Hardware B). When I loaded the I Go Stowaway Keyboard Driver V4.1 for my Stowaway Universal Bluetooth Keyboard it caused my palm Treo 650 to go into an infinite looping reboot. I even went as far as upgrading to palm Treo 650 Updater 1.17, still the same problem. Great product, just not for Treo 650.

Great product, great support

Pros: very durable, portable, great battery life

Cons: PDA stand broke

Review: I use this keyboard with my Dell X51 and I love it. I use it to take notes during lectures and I always get looks from all my other classmates. Why lug around a heavy notebook to class when you can have this?

My only con is actually a pro. My pda stand broke but I called customer service and they sent me two in the mail for free. Didn't even charge for shipping. Im sure if anything else was to go wrong with my keyboard they would be just as helpful.

Product is a 10 and the customer support is a 10+! I highly recommend.

fantastic keyboard - a must-have for serious PDA users

Pros: great tactile feedback, so tiny once folded

Cons: no (dedicated) number keys

Review: This keyboard is amazing. It means I can leave my laptop behind when I go to meetings - this and my HTC Universal are enough to get me through a surprising amount of my day.

Not For Serious PDA Keyboard Users

Pros: Relatively Small; Wireless; Standard Batteries

Cons: Poorly Integrated Numeric Keys; PDA Stand; Only Wireless

Review: I purchased the Dell branded version of this keyboard to go with the Dell Axim x51v PDA. I like the PDA, but this keyboard falls short in a number of places. Maybe that's why Dell doesn't give you a large picture of it on their site. I've previously owned a non-wireless Palm Keyboard (the best), and a Viewsonic Pocket PC V37 keyboard (the worst). I have to believe that if the other CNET members that rated it high, experienced other keyboards, they might not have rated it so high. Dell engineers should have been forced to use it before choosing to rebrand it. First, the numeric keys are on the same row as the QWERTY row of letters, forcing you to use a special "shift" function key when you want to type numbers. It also has a numlock key. The problem with this is that if you buy a keyboard (instead of trying to use a silly thumbboard), you plan to do some REAL typing. Well, they should have put the numeric keys in a row of their own above the QWERTY line like the Palm keyboard. It's very annoying (and slow) to have to use the function key for numbers. I can understand it for characters you don't use that much, but come on, numbers? Secondly, the PDA stand works fine if you plan on orienting your PDA horizontally rather than vertically. (Most good PDAs now support shifting the screen image 90 degrees to provide a "wide-screen" mode.) But if you want to put the PDA in the stand vertically, it doesn't stay put with normal use. What I mean is, the typical way I use my PDA with a keyboard is to use the keys as much as possible, and use the stylus for a few things. With only slight pressure of the stylus on the PDA, it falls off the stand. It is evident that Dell understands this problem as they put a special sticker on the stand so that you don't insert a protruding blade of plastic from the stand in the sync slot on the bottom of the PDA because it could damage the PDA. Obviously, some people did this to steady the PDA and incurred damages--resulting in the warning sticker. Lastly, when pairing the keyboard to the PDA (pushing some buttons so the two devices can talk to each other), it's a little annoying to have to type a security code on both devices each time. When I'm in a business meeting, I would prefer not to have to take the time to do that. I'd prefer to turn on the keyboard and have it just work (securely). I'm not 100% sure that this last issue can't be resolved to work the way I would prefer, but then again, if I was designing the keyboard and software to use it, I would have made that more obvious.

It's awesome on the go!

Pros: Small, portable, nice typing feel, longer range than other wireless keyboard due to bluetooth

Cons: battery comes out sometimes.

Review: This is a great PDA keyboard. I take my pda to class, and use this to take notes. It's great for just setting on my lap, while im taking notes. I do not suggest this for a permamnet keyboard. Use it for a pda, a treo, whatever it is, not for a notebook or desktop.
It's extremely small, and it's space saving, because you fold it back in and the keys get smushed together. And when you open it, the keys unfold. It fits in my purse, which is a great thing for a student.
It has a nice typing feel to it. The other wireless keyboards use IR, which is why they have a shorter range. Since it is small, though, the keys are put together, for instance, the number keys can only be accessed by pressing the blue function key as well as the top row of letters.
The only complaint I have about it is that when I leave it out in my purse without its case, the battery comes out. The cover is not all that secure, but I pop it right back in.
I suggest you buy this if you are looking for a bluetooth keyboard for your gadgets, it's the best one out there in my opinion.
Also, when you do use it, if you don't obstruct anything from its way, it has a longer range. I have my laptop across the room, and it still types, if it's obstructed and connects again, tho, it'll type whatever it is you left off.
Overall, a good buy. Very cool looking too, people ask me about it all the time.

Excellent design and feel -- for the size -- as a power Treo 650 user it is a blessing

Pros: slim design, great feel for such a compact keyboard

Cons: Documentation is incomplete and inaccurate. It took a while to get it in a "useable" state. There are bugs in the driver.

Review: As a power Treo 650 user and a "road warrior" it has been difficult to do a lot of e-mailing from the Treo 650. This keyboard, combined with the Treo 650, makes carrying around my laptop nearly obselete. The keyboard has an amazingly good feel for its slim and compact design. It is very ligt and easy to store.

The only down side is the documentation as it relates to the Treo 650. If half the effort that when into the mechanical design went into documentation, this would be an outstanding product. Although I have the unit functioning, it is not 100% and I eagerly await an updated driver that takes care of all the bugs in the system and I can actually use all the function keys on the keyboard. The price, given the driver probelm, is a bit pricey; nevertheless, I expect the software problems will be solved in time and that the keyboard will eventually be the best on the market for the Treo.

Good bye laptop

Pros: Compact, Sturdy, Great key layout, Battery life, Ease of connection

Cons: The blue and green function keys are hard to see, there is a very slight delay when speed typing, Price

Review: I have Dell Axim X50v that i connect through BT to my Moto V551 gprs connection when i am on the road. I have a laptop as well. I rairly use the Laptop anymore. The compact design is great. It took me less than 5 minutes to get connected at first. now i just open it up and it connects perfect every time. yes the price is more than i wanted to spend. but i am glad i got it. I use it with word and IE surfing is great. i did notice when i was typing fast there was a slight delay. I expected that so to me it isnt a huge deal.

A great tool for tedious tasks...

Pros: Thin, light, small footprint, great key feel, good pitch, actually useable!, good case included

Cons: A little on the flimsy side, uneven bottom (rocks), no rubber grip on PDA platform - may slip off, setup could be easier but good enough...

Review: This is was one of those purchases I didn't really want to make. I already blew my PDA accessories budget long ago but I could'nt resist. I could never really be really productive typing/tapping on the screen all day long anyway. Actually, my first keyboard was an IR keyboard from pocketop. While the fit/finish and quality was somewhat better, it was not as usable due to diminutive key size and IR beam aiming problems, In other words, too combersome. This keyboard, on the other hand is much much more useful. The keys are large enough for most hands, and you don't need to worry about line of site. Response time is great and overall, works pretty good. (Make sure you download the latest drivers though) On the downside, there was a problem with the keyboard rocking back and forth due to uneven rubber feet. I had to hack/mod this by removing the bottom plate and lifting one rubber foot and placing a sized piece of rubber band underneath. Worked perfectly and no visible modification shows. Also, the PDA platform was too slippery and would sometimes slide off. I had to cut away a small piece of rubber from the folding back stand and place it strategically where it was needed on the platform. WORKS PERFECTLY! Aside from this, I can tell I will get good mileage from this peripheral. I also use this KB for my Sony Laptop.

fragility and lack of response

Pros: very small and compact, takes advantage of bluetooth for those of us that bought a palm and rarely use it.

Cons: very fragile, this sliding mechanism can be a bit catchy at times and the keys don't always respond, so u end up typing a sentence that would look like this... "montay policy is best usd in demanpullinflation..." and that's really a line from my economics
