Pros: Small profile, no searching for another power plug, good warranty, easy to set up for your situation

Cons: Takes up two USB ports, software is a bit lacking.

Summary: This is a set-and-forget type of product. The first time you need it you'll be glad you have it. It is geared more towards the novice, but an expert can take advantage of it's simplicity. Easy to navigate software, but could use more features. It's not really intended for a disk cloning device - use Maxblast for that. But if you have damaged files such as your Outlook Express mail files, or those dozens of office documents that your kid deleted because they took up too much space, it's a godsend.
I recently was confronted with a dead hard drive and before this event, I used the One Touch Mini 4 to perform a weekly backup. I got a new hard drive, loaded the OS, connected the One Touch Mini 4 - it automatically installed itself and I was able to copy/paste files to get my system Apps back to working order.
What would make it better is to provide a two stage restore solution:
    1. Recover the OS (XP, Vista, etc.)
    2. Recover the files your Apps need ( Outlook Express, Nero, docs, photos, etc.)
    and/or...
    3. Provide a full image restore.
Anyway... it's east to use, flexible, and when you need it - you'll be glad you had it.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini does provide solutions for 1, 2, and 3, above, in the form of 'Safety Drill' which restores the whole system to a previously saved state.

It can for example get everything back if a major crash occurs and the system stops working or the hard drive dies. It can only restore if the (new) hard drive has the same or higher capacity and the rest of the hardware is the same, but I have used it several times with no problems.

Included is the 'Safety Drill' boot disc, while the Manual and setup files for 'Maxtor Manager' are on the drive itself. Some of the problems reported elsewhere may be due to Manager becoming corrupt. Therefore the instructions recommend copying its setup files in case they get overwritten and you need to uninstall Manager and run them again.

You can use drag and drop etc. to copy files so auto backup is not really a limitation. If the drive fails you need to confirm with Seatools first, which also reports on the status of the 5 yr warranty.
