"Back light problems, but a work horse"
Pros: this model has everything i wanted and performs great when the monitor is working. this was the perfect replacement to my desktop, i thought. luckily it's still under warrenty.
Cons: the monitor has gone "dark" on me twice since i've owned it now in less than a full year. this is the exact problem i had about 9 months ago 3 months after i purchased it.
Summary: i would NOT recommend this product especailly if you need a reliable computer for business. it is a good thing i kept my old desktop monitor which is now hooked up to my laptop, allowing me to keep functioning. the customer service has been great, but this has been a REAL PAIN to have to send my computer in for service twice in the last year and costly down time. this is the first and last ACER product i will ever buy. the guy i talked to at customer service gave my no reason for why this would keep happening. so, i'll chalk it up to a poor quality product. once again, i would NEVER buy an acer product or recommend one again.

I have to agree with this review. I have an aspire 1310 and within 18months of owning from brand new, it had also been returned to acer for repair (faulty backlight x2, faulty motherboard, faulty cooler fan - you name it, it went wrong!) Finally, the keyboard has just started to disintegrate with the keys falling off and the plastic holders for them snapping and breaking away. Frankly not what you would expect for a computer that is just over 2 years old! Furthermore, my sister also has one of these of the same age, and hers has been returned for repair 3 times and when calling customer services was quoted" what do you expext? it is an acer!" Hmmmmm. somehow not very encouraging!
Not something I would ever buy again, or recommend to anyone! -
This 'thing' is powerful, yes, but it's noisier than a beefed up desktop and hotter than flowing lava.
The screen conveniently lasts 12 months. Mine went 'dark' (about 20% of its normal brightness) 2 months after the warranty expired.
In my opinion this product was created by an overly ambitious design team trying to give the consumer too much with non viable mobile technologies. Never again I will buy a notebook with a desktop CPU. Simply put, the heat generated by this monster cooks all the components to a crisp over a short period of time. I will not recommend the Acer Aspire 1710. -
I also bought the 1710 and loved it! The screen went dark 13 months later. Did it know I had a 12 month warranty?!? I hooked up a 17" LCD monitor and that works great with it, but it is no longer portable by any means. Buy an Acer again? Not without an extended warranty. The separate monitor was less expensive than the repair.
