"I'd love it if it worked"
Pros: Value for the $
Cons: Battery life; MAJOR OVERHEATING
Summary: Got a great deal at Circuit City and was thrilled with the Acer Aspire 3000 for about six months. A RAM upgrade to 1GB made it super-fast, and it does everything I need it to. But the battery life went to maybe 30 minutes in that time, and now, not quite a year after purchase, it's developed an overheating issue which SUCKS. I got a CoolPad external fan setup, but running more than a couple programs or using the CD/DVD player/burner will heat it to 90C or more in minutes, and cause instant shutdown--save often! Finally downloaded a PowerNow! Dashboard Program and automatic voltage adjuster from the AMD Sempron website, which mostly keeps the temp below shut-down point--but it's still awful hot, which probably means a short chip life expectancy--and having to slow the machine down just to run it is counterproductive. AMD should not have released this unit without fixing this issue.

I quickly learned not to put this "lap"top on my lap. I have actually been burned by this thing. I bought a cooling pad, which helps some, and I've also had to purchase a new battery. If I had to do it again, I would've gone with the Averatec I was looking at. It was smaller, and would've been much easier on my back when going to my classes. And it probably wouldn't have physically injured me, either.

I have this model too-upgraded to 768ram and it flies but it overheats. I think it is a hazard.

Ya, same problem with my two year old. Just had it cleaned (but not with the heat sinks removed and grease replenished). I wonder about stepping down the voltage as a work-around, or disabling fat 32 and using nfts (?) instead. I cannot burn a bootable CD or DVD as it overheats just swapping files. Next step, do the greasing?
just wondering, this is a major pain in the axe.

My daughter purchased the same machine from Circuit City and has had the exact same problem as you had. Machine has been sent back to Acer 3 times to be fixed and still is corrected. The second time they wiped out everything on the computer and installed a new harddrive for no reason because it didn't correct any problems, just lost all her work for nothing. At this point wouldn't buy another one.
