"It's a lemon, don't get it - cooling mechanism doomed" on by majanillo

    Pros: Price. That's about it.

    Cons: Overheating
Died one day after 1 year of purchase (overheating)
    Ran the original vista
    Slow memory performance

Summary: It worked okay (not great) while it was still working. And then literally on day 366 of my owning it (ie literally one day after the warranty expired), it died on me, never to return again.

Running multiple programs was sometimes cumbersome - i thought about adding memory, but it took me a while to motivate on that, and by the time i did, it had died.

And of course, it was doomed by the fact that it was running the original Windows Vista - that did wonders for its performance.

I now believe the reason it eventually died was bc of overheating - it got REALLY, REALLY hot (like, it would burn you if you touched it after it had been on for a while) if you left it on for more than a day. Toward the end of its life, the amount of time you could leave it on for without it overheating became shorter and shorter (and I never put it on any soft/clothy surfaces -- I always had some sort of solid thing I was putting it on so I wouldnt contribute to the overheating). It had either a poor cooling mechanism, or the mechanism that actually generates heat in a computer (i cant remember if it's the processor, the drives, or whatever) generated way, way too much. It if it was the latter, tHis could have been the fault (of course) of the maker of that individual part (eg the drive, if that's the source of the overheating), as you know, most computers (no matter what their outside label says), get the majority of their internal components from all kinds of different companies.

"Good hardware for the price." on by ushphys

Pros: All of the hardware works and seems to be reliable.

Cons: Too slow for Windows Vista

Summary: I rated it an 8 for the hardware only.
This is a nice machine for the money. I've had it a few months and everything works.
However, this computer is too slow for Windows Vista. 3D games are choppy and DVD's do not play smoothly under Windows Vista. "Optimizing" didn't improve anything.

Before reading the following, understand that I am an experienced Linux user.
I formatted the hard drive and installed openSUSE 10.3 Linux. Now, 3D games run smoothly and DVD playback is clear and smooth. The only problem I encountered during the openSUSE install was that I had to use the legacy ATI graphic card drivers. The ATI drivers included with the distro didn't support the Radeon XPress 1100 chips. openSUSE runs smoothly with the legacy ATI drivers on this laptop.
This is a good machine without Vista.

"Not bad for under $400" on by Robert Drake

Pros: It works and hasn't blown up on me yet.

Cons: If it were over $400, then maybe I could think of something

Summary: What I have isn't the exact model listed. I get the feeling Acer doesn't produce more than one of each model ;). Mine has a x1300 dedicated video in it, even though the case says its a xpress 1100 integrated video. I got mine for $350cdn from Walmart, due to a pricing error (or so the manager lead me to believe). Had it nearly a month, haven't put it under much stress as it just sits here on my desk. It all seems to function properly. The screen is really too large for the resolution and the colours are a bit washed out. That's about the worst I can say. Oh, and don't try changing the video drivers, its doesn't work well for some odd reason. Had a Macbook before this, and it was way better, but hey, this costs what the Applecare would have cost. It will hold me over till Apple decides to release something interesting and reflect the change in the Canadian dollar. If you can find one of these for $400 or less, go for it.
