"Great little machine that does everything I want." on by tonythedamb

Pros: Screen is marvelous, permitting web browsing with no real difficulty at all; runs all kinds of sofftware; has excellent accessory design with 3 USB, mike, earphones, speakers (minimal), lots more; works great on wireless networksl

Cons: Keyboard is good size but does not feel right (takes time to get used to); mouse-pad hard to control; must use a real mouse; MUST buy/install a 2Gb memory card to achieve acceptable processing speed (cost me $40, delivered). Played video just fine.

Summary: AOK is my summary in a nutshell. I have been determnined to write a review since I first got the machine, as I was irritated by ALL the professional reviews I saw being essentially negative, grudgingly saying some good things, but essentially writing this mnachine off as a poor choice.

I am not a gamer ... if I was, this machine would not be for me. What I want is to browse the Web; to send/receive emails; to operate using Windows XP; to run any and all of my programs, including old DOS ones, graphics sofftware, recording software, capture/play video.

I have done all the above except I've not recorded video. This machine seems to run everything I throw at it. Slow ... well, not fast, but fast enough for me. Here's a list of some programs I'm currently using:
    Firefox browser
    MSIE browser
    Corel 12 Graphics Suite
    Open Office (latest version) Suite
    Avira AntiVirus software
LapLink (an excellent synching program, over cable/wireless/you-name-it)
America Online (my ISP from home, where I've no high speed available)
Nero 7 Suite (I plug a CD/DVD in via USB)
And a plethora of support accessory programs that help me out.

I have had the Open Office Power Point fail (with the BSOD, sadly) when trying to do slide shows ... however, I've not used that option before with the latest OO version, and am not at all certain this is not an OO problem, rather than a computer-related one).

So, my suggestion ... If you're looking for a light, handsome, truly inexpensive, versatile, long-battery-life netbook, with a top-notch screen, then you can't go wrong with this one. I got it for $379 (delivered).

"Never Buy Acer" on by anujchandkapoor

Pros: None. I could not find any as whenever i try to work on it, it hangs. It hangs at least 10 times in one session. So i cannot work on it without loosing my working data.

Cons: Never works, keeps on hanging. I have seen bad customer service but Acer tops that too. It is probably the worst customer service that i have ever encountered in my entire life.

Summary: I gave this machine to the Singapore service center at least 10 times, the first time they replaced the RAM saying that it was not a compatible RAM, How did a non compatible RAM get into a sealed laptop ??? well they do not now. Anyways even after the RAM change it never ran. Since then the net book have had several visits to the service center every time they say that there is no problem with it. I don't understand their response. its like as if they are trying to fool me and eat up the warranty period. Now unfortunately they are successful in that as my warranty expires on the 12th September and even today my net book fails to run. If you have money to throw, then please throw it but DO NOT BUY A ACER PRODUCT.

"I spent more time rebooting the machine than using it." on by AHon_HK

    Pros: Light weight
    Excellent battery life
    Very affordable
    Beautiful display
Scrolling function is easy to use
Perfect machine for lecture/college use if it weren't for the serious cons

Cons: Highly unstable -- random freezes require hard boot

Summary: Purchased machine online and it started freezing randomly on day 2. I was running Safari when that happened. The problem kept reoccurring so I uninstalled Safari and just used IE. It didn't completely alleviate the problem though it seems to occur less often.
I then installed MS Office 2007. It would freeze up whenever I scroll up and down the document. Called Acer support and they recommended me to reinstall Windows.
Reinstalled Windows a COUPLE times but the problem still exists.
    Back to my Mac.

"Trim the fat, and it's a great laptop" on by nintendodude

    Pros: Very bright screen
    Great keyboard
    Fairly inexpensive
    Feels sturdy
    SD/MS reader, not just SD

    Cons: No bluetooth
No expansion slots - plenty of room for some!
    OEM install

Summary: I tinkered with this thing out of the box for a few moments and just got angry. SO much garbage comes pre loaded on this thing, no wonder why people complain about the speed. I fired up my USB CDROM drive and loaded up a base XP Pro install with just the most basic drivers. Much better! Acer has a great way to access drivers, similar to Dell, and it was very painless.

I found that the display liked to keep going back to a particular brightness - open up MSCONFIG, kill the "persistancethread.exe" entry and you are set!

I have it running somewhat light weight - disabled the themes service, all background services associated with Google, Java, etc. and various tweaks like a seperate partition for the page file. I also upgraded to 2 GB RAM. It plays Netflix full screen without a problem, but chokes on Hulu because flash does not utilize the GPU, CPU only and it makes for a problem.

The gesture based touchpad is pretty good, but nothing like Apple's multitouch - it's alright for a sub-$400 netbook

So there you have it - dump the OEM installation and do a fresh one, optomize it, and you'll be all set.

"What were they thinking?" on by JohnnyCalifornia

Pros: Its sleek...sexy...amazingly portable...The monitor is giant (For a netbook) The keys are full size, no more typing..Retyping. The moniter is High Def, and has a brilliant picture. Its ALMOST everything you would want in a netbook...Almost.

Cons: They gave you this giant 11.5 inch moniter @1366x768, yet they didn't include the Graphics processor to actually use it. It comes with a TON of bloatware that further serves to slow its already slow processor down. Wrong direction here Acer. PRICE!

Summary: This system kinda grows on you. It took me an hour to trim the windows XP home installation down to workable. The good news is, once you drop all the garbage Acer puts on it, the 1.33 GHz processor is reasonably adequate for your basic needs. If you use an external dvd drive, run DVD movies, the picture is simply stunning. Simple surfing, email and light games work wonderfully. The point is...I own this machine, and its the right machine, just the wrong processor. Rumors have it that they are going to revamp the 11.6" Aspire One, and give it a more beefier disposition. If they can do this, and lower the steep price tag, this will definately be the biggest selling netbook of all time. It simply feels right...Not to big, not to small. Mine is actually (well seemingly) as fast now as my 10.1 with the 1.6 GHz atom processor, now that I trimmed it down. Ive fallen in love with it. Although I am far to mature to carry on a overt affair with it...Im betting the next revision will steal many hearts.
