"Great Laptop, had a few minor issues, but they are resolvable (Read Review)"

    by PAUL_PARADIGM on February 18, 2006

Pros: Super fast, cool camera, great multi-media

Cons: Acer tech support couldn't solve NIC problem, I had to do a day of research. I should bill ACER for my TIME!

Summary: Looses one point for ACER Support being so bad that I had to threaten the support tech to get anywhere!!!

BUT. LAPTOP IS AWESOME. SUPER FAST, GREAT SCREEN. I HAVE POSTED THE NIC CARD FIX BELOW, SO EVEYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIX THEIR PROBLEM WITHOUT GOING THROUGHT THE HELL OF RETURNING THIS GREAT NOTEBOOK.

thought I'd post this since I've spent the better part of my day resolving
it. Very frustrating to pull a new laptop out of the box and not have it
    working.

Hardware: Acer 8204WLMi, Intel 945PM Chipset, Intel PRO/1000 PM Ethernet

Problem: Ethernet connection drops randomly and intermitently. The driver
constantly restarts itself (Event ID: 42 from source e1express). This means
that the network connection stalls, sometimes causing the entire system to
    stall.

Root Cause: Bad eeprom on the NIC from Intel

    Solution:

    1. Download intel_eeprom.zip from
    ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/travelmate_8200/driver/
    2. Extract into c:\windows\system32\drivers, start Command Prompt
    3. Run eeupdatew32 /BUS=3 /DEV=00 /DATA TEKOA_A3.txt
    4. Reboot
    5. Enjoy and be happy

I have been searching for this eeprom update (intel_eeprom.zip) for days now without any luck. Could you please help? This NIC problem is driving me crazy ....

First of all, I would just like to thank you for the information. I have an Acer Travelmate 8100 and it has the same problem (network connection dropping) that you were experiencing.

However, I'm not very familiar with Command Prompt (I know, I'm a n00b). What exactly should I type after in Command Prompt after extracting the files into c:\windows\system32\drivers?

I returned the laptap to Acer for repair last week. I got it back today but Acer tech did not fix anything. They found no problem. I followed your instruction. LAN connection is now working well.
    Thank you!
