"Very slick and solid"4.5 starson by zr0sight
Pros: Beautiful laptop, sturdy construction, come loaded.
Cons: Slight longer and non standard video out.
Summary: Lets start with this statement: "This is my first Apple computer and I like it."
The casing of the laptop is solid, I can rest both my palm on the case and type full speed on the keyboard without feeling like I am compressing components inside. This is very different than some Windows laptop I have used in the past.
The 15" non glossy wide screen is brilliant and clear, both text and pictures are very clear. I just wish the resolution is slightly higher, lets say 1920×1200 (WUXGA).
Firewire 800 is a brilliant feature on this laptop, it allow me to use WD MyBook as an external hard drive for video editing and backup with blazing speed.
The build in AirPort Extreme wireless card is very stable, haven't yet once dropped my wireless connection at office and at home. Wish I can say the same about my Thinkpad.
Decent battery life, roughly 4 hours if all you are doing is work processing. About 2~3 hours if you are watching DVD, doing presentation, or photo editing on the fly.
Couple features I really like to see on the MacBook Pro in the future, maybe now even.
1. A finger print scanner for log in, I got enough password need to remember already.
2. Higher resolution screen, current resolution is not bad. But, higher resolution never hurt for activity like coding or reading code.
Some nit picking.
1. The very bright LED light used to indicate the laptop is in sleep mode. If you have a habit of placing your laptop on the nightstand...
2. The single cyclop like mouse button sucks, would it kill Apple to finally admit that one button mouse is insufficient? I rather have a right-click mouse bottom than have to ctrl + click.
Overall, as a long time Windows laptop user and first time Apple user. I am very satisfied with this laptop.Updated
Forgot to mention this, extra 1 GB of memory is recommended. Especially if you are using Mac Office (memory hog), the system out of box consumed about 700MB of physical memory (slight high in my opinion). With couple of firefox browser windows, a PowerPoint/Keynote presentation, and an Eclipse IDE open you will find yourself in swapping land.
