"Best computer for the money"5.0 starson by Jim Morris
Pros: I bought this exact computer refurbished for $1699 a month or two back, to replace a 1 year old Macbook Pro 13" that I handed off to my wife. I find performance and quality to be second to none.
Cons: None so far.
Summary: I am a PCB designer and software developer, and find that this runs my board design tools (Altium Designer and Altera Quartus II) under VMWare Fusion better than my desktop PC - a Dell quad-core Xeon - does under native 64-bit Windows. For cross platform software development under Linux and Windows, running one or more virtual machines for those platform tools is a snap. Daily work using either iWork, Adobe Creative Suite CS3 or Office 2008. All in all I find this to be an excellent desktop replacement that you can take with you, and the Core i5 processor has done everything I throw at it.
For those sitting on the fence, I highly recommend considering a Mac notebook - even if its just the lowest cost Macbook. I was looking to spend $2000 of my own money on a notebook computer in 2002, and had it down to a Sony Vaio running Windows XP or an Apple iBook G3. I ended up going with the iBook for $100 more at the time, as it could run Mac, Windows and Linux software as needed using Virtual PC. The native iLife apps that come with all Mac's outdo any video editing or photo management software software that comes with the PC. I've spend hundreds on video editing tools for Windows and nothing comes close to iMovie for casual video editing.
The iBook G3 I bought in 2002 was replaced (under Applecare warranty) in late 2003 by an iBook G4 due to a defect in the motherboard. Apple then cut me a check for $180 as a refund on the unused portion of the 3 year extended warranty! So I got a new computer and money back! And that replacement from December 2003 is still working, although showing its age, and is in use as a family web surfing laptop.
For what its worth, my buddy who bought the Vaio in 2002 has been through 3 or 4 laptops since then, and is now finally switched to a Macbook Pro himself!
All in all, you get high reliability and ease of use with the Apple hardware, and in my experience they outlast equivalent Windows computers.
