"For $3000 AUD - the ultimate "You get what you pay for""4.5 starson by Ampersam
Pros: - Typical Apple outstanding build quality (very "shiny")
- Surprising light and thin frame for the hardware beneath
- Delicious high-resolution display
- Gutsy enough to withstand intense processing/ rendering
- Pretty good battery life
Cons: - Usual windows-user gripes about OSX
- Expensive accessories
- Expensive machine, for that matter
- Shiny screen will attract marks
Summary: Firstly, let me get this over with. I've always been a windows girl - so it was difficult to concede to buying a Macbook to begin with.
But seriously, this thing is wonderful. (Apart from the gaping, smoking hole it left in my wallet, *sob* )
Once I'd covered every inch of the thing in protection (and for what it's worth, I recommend investing in a screen protector at the very least) - I got to admire it properly, and as usual, Apple are genii (I think that's right) at their product design, and this is no different.
The resolution on this thing is mouth-watering, everything looks great, that's for sure. And that dedicated graphics card certainly doesn't hurt, either. Everything I've done on this, performance wise - including gaming, rendering, movies and surfing - has been flawlessly smooth and simple.
My only complaints are meagre - I still don't like OSX much (but I can boot windows so never mind), I'm terrified of scratching the thing (screen protectors, cases and taking off one's watch will help there), and the complaint that Apple is not content with vacuuming all your money out with one purchase; a keyboard, mouse and an extra charger will set you back another AUD $200 at the least.
While this is a wonderful laptop, I am still happy with my custom-built PC too, for a myriad of quirky reasons (and for this I am sort of relieved)
It's expensive, yes - but boy is it worth it.
If you can afford the mortgage, and you want the best all-round laptop you can buy - this is still the best contender.
And as a windows person... that's quite an admission.
