"Finally, a Netbook that fulfills expectations"
Pros: Lightweight, Wi-Fi, Windows XP, nice storage
Cons: No optical drive -- but that's why it's a netbook
Summary: This is my third attempt at finding a truly functional Netbook, and the third time was a charm. After purchasing the original Asus, then the Dell 2300, I tried the Asus 1000h.
First off, the computer is gorgeous. The high gloss finish gives it a very polished look -- much like the black MacBook.
The computer is extremely intuitive. Plug in the adapter, charge the battery and, if you've used a computer, you'll be up and running. The system automatically hunts down accessible Wi-Fi spots, and XP remains Windows most appealing operating system.
While the battery life is not the seven hours advertised (or even 5), it does clock in at about 4 1/2 hours -- plenty of juice for just about any domestic flight.
But the true value of the computer is in its featherweight class. Not only does it weigh in at three pounds, the adapter is about as small as you'll find for a computer (an often overlooked component when measuring weight and portability).
The 10-inch screen is plenty of viewing area and the keyboard measures about 95% of a standard laptop. Plenty, if you're not sporting sausages for fingers.
The speakers are a bit tinny and, of course, there's no optical drive. But for what it's meant for -- web browsing, document writing and editing and email -- you'd be hard pressed to find a better Netbook. Particularly for about $550.
